written by Kenneth Fong September 17, 2018November 2, 2018

Fancy an afternoon of indulgence? How does tea, scones, pastries, and finger sandwiches sound? Jolly good, we say! From heritage-themed offerings to authentic Peranakan flavours, we’ve put together a list of 10 places offering the best in town.

1. 10 Scotts

Occupying the space of the original Clifford Pier, afternoon tea at the Fullerton Bay Hotel is a leisurely affair that is informed by the venue’s historic past as well as the kitchen’s meticulous recreation of heritage favourites.

The Singapore Heritage Afternoon Tea ($48++) contains a selection of 8 savoury and 8 sweet items to reflect Singapore’s culinary past and present. Think Nonya-style Chicken Curry wrapped in freshly made Roti Jala, Kurobuta Pork Kong Bak Bao, fried Mantou stuffed with iconic Chilli Crab and Bika Ambon. Shiok (awesome).

5. National Kitchen by Violet Oon (National Gallery)

Violet Oon

We’re big fans of Violet Oon, and consider her to be the Julia Child of Peranakan food in Singapore. With such a title, you can expect the afternoon tea at National Kitchen by Violet Oon to be an exquisite presentation of traditional Peranakan flavours.

The Singapore High Tea ($56++ for two persons) is served with your choice of coffee or tea. The latter is specially hand-blended by The Singapore Tea Company to showcase the best teas of the season. The menu features beloved Peranakan classics like Kueh Pie Tee and Kueh Dah Dah.

You’ll probably be quite stuffed, but we highly recommend topping up the additional $14++ (also for 2 persons) for the dry laksa.

Apart from a seasonal array of delicate savouries and sweets that will be circulated throughout, you’ll also be served pastries like pistachio éclairs, fresh fruit tarts, and yuzu lemon cupcakes. The focus of the tea set is on beautifully executed sweets like Coconut Lemon Cake and Sticky Date Pudding, but also offers a savoury option in the form of the Chicken Pinche Petit Sandwich (smoked chicken breast with jalapeño mayo and corn).

Kenneth is a firm believer that when it comes to food, everything should be tried at least once. That is why he has tasted and survived surströmming, hongeo, and witchetty grub. Like Tolkien, he also believes that if more of us valued food, cheer, and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.
