Here’s what you missed from Chope’s food photography workshop with Dishtag

If there’s someone we trust to take a drool-worthy photo, it’s got to be the folks at Dishtag. A search and social platform dedicated to food, Dishtag busted out their best photographers to coach over 20 lucky participants in a joint workshop, ‘Learn How to Take the Perfect Food Photo’.

Eng |

Tickets sold out in just a few hours, and it’s not surprising why. Budding food photographers picked up tips and tricks on food styling, lighting and composition, making sure they had all the right tools in their arsenal for an amazing portfolio. A complimentary Porterhouse brunch buffet spread was prepared, giving them the opportunity to test out the new skills they’ve learned.

Capturing moments and memories on Instagram, a photo contest encouraged participants to take a shot (pun intended) at impressing judges and their fellow attendees. Winners walked away with a teapot set from Franc Franc. On top of that, a free Francfranc PUTON Cup Cover Hat was also gifted to all participants.

Check out the excellent work from the winners users:

Located in Crowne Plaza Changi Airport, the brand-new restaurant serves up your familiar dim sums, as well as modern interpretations of classic dishes. Some of our recommended must-tries include the Crab Steamed with Egg White that will remind you of chawanmushi and Sautéed Beef Cubes with Foie Gras Sauce & Garlic.

The elegant and contemporary décor of the restaurant is a perfect place for your family gatherings and celebrations, with a wide-range of choices on its menu that are suitable for sharing.

It’s all about healthy and wholesome foods at The Garden Club. A rare find in the busy CBD, The Garden Club at the 5th floor of OUE Downtown Gallery houses an indoor seating area, as well as a rooftop al fresco bar.

In the day, customise your quick serve protein bowls that you could enjoy for lunch. At nightfall, see the space transform into a hang-out spot serving up yummy plates, from meats to a variety of vegetables, healthy grains and all-vegan desserts!

With the belief for affordable and conscious-eating, the extensive range of vegan options caught our eye. We’re talking Garden Ragu Fettuccine made from a house-made specialty Beyond Meat™ ragu sauce, Barley Mushroom Risotto, and more!

Find it at 6A Shenton Way, #05-01OUE Downtown Gallery, Singapore 068815

3. Grand Cru at South Courtyard

Fine wines paired with cheeses, asian dishes, and western favourites. Does that sound like a perfect night out for you?

One of the newest restaurants along Bukit Pasoh Road, Beurre is helmed by head chef Darwin Wong, who built a modern and innovative French menu for the restaurant. Much thought was put into the menu, and the best part? Beautifully plated dishes at affordable prices!

Beurre is butter in French, and it is an important ingredient in the kitchen at this restaurant. The highlights in its menu includes the 10-day Butter-aged Angus Ribeye, and the Portebello Mushroom Tart with leek cream and poached eggs.

At lunch, you can find their signature rice bowls and sharing plates, perfect for your lunch date, or a satisfying meal with your company.

Bali’s top 30 for the holiday season!

Eng | Bahasa

It’s that time of the year again! Like they say, “A little bit of summer is what the whole year’s all about”, and this time, summer coincides with the Muslim religious holiday, Eid-al-Fitr. Since this is a festival that most of Indonesia celebrate, holiday-hotspot Bali will surely be buzzing with tourists from all over — expect some places to be packed like sardines! To prepare yourself, book the best restaurants beforehand so you won’t go home on an empty stomach. Here are some great places to celebrate the holiday season!

Ubud

Kemiri Restaurant (COMO Uma Ubud)

Welcome to the land of yoga and wellness. Take a stroll through Campuhan Ridge Walk, enjoy the lush scenery, and unplug for a bit. Afterwards, you can have an authentic Indonesian lunch at Hujan Locale, Kemiri, Nomad, or The Restaurant at the Chedi Club Tanah Gajah.

It’s time for some Bali-exploration! Be captivated by a kecak dance performance or visit the cheeky Ubud Monkey Forest for the ultimate Bali experience! After that, drop by the Habitat Cafe for a healthy and refreshing meal. But, if you feel like lazing the day away, sink into cool waters and watch the time fly by at Folk, or better yet! Enjoy stunning Ubud alongside Bali’s acclaimed sunset at Sayan House. Reservations are essential but fret not, we’ve got your back. Book your dinner at the best of Ubud — BLANCO par Mandif, Kubu at Mandapa, Pica, and bridges will be your best bets.

Seminyak

Mrs. Sippy Bali

Oh my, we seriously don’t know where to start. Seminyak is such a fun area to explore! Experience the largest saltwater pool at Mrs. Sippy, grab a quick bite at Bo & Bun, or put on your sunnies and sip on a cold rosé while enjoying a delightful meal at Ijen, whereby zero wastage is promoted to lower carbon footprint. Wander around Jl. Kayu Aya and pick your favourites from a treasure trove — from traditional handmade souvenirs to designer boutiques, you name it, this street has it. You won’t be lacking dinner options here in Seminyak with Mamasan, Sarong, Da Maria, and Barbacoa being definite favourites. When you’ve had your fill, dance the night away at La Favela, but don’t forget to snap some shots at the cute photobox on the second floor!

Canggu

From_the_Land_Tongseng_Kambing_1554128131
SVÁ Indonesian Tapas & Bar

If Seminyak and Ubud were to have a child, Canggu would be their baby. Start your day right by joining a barre class or relax through sunrise flow yoga at Fitspot Bali. Then, move on to indulge in great food at all-time favourite cafe Milk & Madu at Jl. Pantai Berawa, or enjoy a caffeine boost amidst ravishing rice fields at Cinta Cafe. Another must do is renting a motorbike and visiting the bustling local flea market around Batu Bolong area — like they say, reuse and recycle! Spend the rest of your afternoon lounging and watching the sunset from the beautiful La Brisa, surf at Echo Beach, or lay back and relax at the sophisticated COMO beach club. Spoil your taste buds with an exotic twist on traditional Indonesian flavour at SVÁ Indonesian Tapas & Bar. If Japanese is your thing, modern restaurants Musubi and Ji are some of the eateries we take delight in.

Kuta

Screen_Shot_2018_06_29_at_11_5_1531913996
Il Tempio Bali

The jewel of Bali, the one that first brought the island to fame. Take a walk along the beach and splurge a little at the Beachwalk Shopping Mall *wink*. When hunger strikes, pay a visit to our favourite Italian places — Il Tempio and Jamie’s Italian Bali are just around the corner. Waterbom Bali is a One-of-a-Kind experience you just have to try in the city, and we believe you deserve a medal for completing the thrilling 5GX Reverse Bungy without throwing up. Treat yourself to a delicious meal of juicy, tender dry-aged meat at Henry’s Grill and Bar, or stuff your face at Feast Restaurant, located in Bali Kuta Resort. We hope you brought your dancing shoes, because LXXY is a glamorous nightclub not to be missed.

Southeast Asian Cuisines You Haven’t Tried Yet

We’re too busy fighting over whether Singapore or Malaysia has the best nasi lemak or checking out the latest pho offerings to see what other yummy dishes our neighbours boast. Ready to expand your geopolitical consciousness a little bit? Here are some of the best spots for where you can get lesser known Southeast Asian delicacies.

1. Filipino: Iskina Cebu

Iskina Cebu
Cr: eatbook.sg

Sink your teeth into the crispiest and juiciest national dish at Iskina Cebu. Here the lechon is spit-roasted for five hours over a charcoal fire — as close as you can get to authentic without flying over. The marinade packs a punch and makes the wait worthwhile. If pork’s not your thing, then check out the inasal na manok, or roasted chicken. Iskina Cebu does not offer a huge menu, but what they do, they do well.

Find it at 73 Ayer Rajah Crescent, #01-27, Singapore 139957.
Click here for more information on Iskinda Cebu.

2. Burmese: Inle Myanmar

Inle Myanmar
Cr: misstamchiak.com

Make sure you go with friends to this basement joint, because you’ll want to try everything. We love the flavourful Mohinga, a fish-based noodle soup filled with what seems like a thousand other flavours — assam, onion, banana blossom, ginger — that come together to do one thing: get you hooked. Then there’s the Pickled Tea Leaf Salad, which gives you that added punch you need for the day with its crisp peanuts, toasted sesame seeds and fried garlic. Check out the rest of the chef’s recommendations, and don’t forget to leave room for dessert.

Find it at 111 North Bridge Road, #B1-07, Peninsula Plaza, Singapore 179098.
Click here for more information on Inle Myanmar.

3. Cambodian: 51 F&B Cambodia Steamboat & Mookata

51F&B
Cr: facebook.com

We still haven’t found a place that serves our favourite Cambodian dish, fish amok, just yet, but if you don’t have the time for a weekend trip, why not try this standalone stall in the east? Run by a Cambodian lady, 51 serves up Khmer food with a Singaporean spin. Try their Loc Lak Khmer — wok-fried beef paired with a zesty, cilantro dipping sauce — or their fried white-spotted rabbitfish for a healthy(ish) but hearty family meal.

Find it at 51 Guillemard Road, Singapore 399705.
Click here for more information on 51 F&B Cambodia Steamboat & Mookata.

4. Laotian: IndoChine Chijmes

IndoChine
Cr: indochine-group.com

While Singapore does not have many Laotian restaurants just yet, IndoChine can be counted on to bring some of the best dishes to our shores. Its founder, Michael Ma, does hail from the “Land of a Million Elephants” after all. At this gorgeous outlet in Chijmes, order the Ping Xinh Nam Tok, or marinated beef rump, which also comes with a wagyu option. And while this landlocked country may not have much seafood naturally, you can still savour the Beer Battered Sea Bass Fillet with a Laotian-inspired tomato salsa. Delish.

Find it at 30 Victoria Street, #01-21/22, Singapore 187996.
Click here for more information on IndoChine Chijmes.

5. All in one stop: Colony

Colony LaksaColony Grilled Satay

Why do you have to choose which Southeast Asian dish you want to explore? Pick a top-notch buffet like the Ritz’ Colony, and you can go around Southeast Asia, and the rest of the world — if your stomach allows. With its seven kitchens and live cooking stations, you’ll indulge in Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, Malaysian and Western dishes — and other cuisines during special occasions.

6 Dining Spots that Mums will Love for Mother’s Day

Here’s your weekly Chope public service announcement: Mother’s Day is this Sunday, and we hope you’re planning a show of gratitude in some way. In true blue Singaporean fashion, we present a list of food-related deals and make your meal-planning sesh a little easier.

Need further curation? If your mum fits any of these descriptions, here are some places that might point you in the right direction.

For the health-conscious mum

The Garden Interior.jpg

Does your mum watch what she (and the rest of the family) eats? Does she wrap up your KFC in kitchen towels to absorb as much oil as possible before she lets you sink your teeth into a chicken thigh, or hound you to take your daily vitamins? Take her to The Garden at Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa, which promises healthy and hearty salads and mains in a tranquil restaurant filled with natural light and plenty of greens. For $60++, you get a three-course set (pumpkin kaffir lime soup, a choice between wasabi miso-glazed Chilean sea bass or sous vide Cajun spiced chicken breast, and chilled aloe vera and mint jelly), coffee or tea, and a glass of prosecco. A waistline-friendly meal to celebrate your mum. Promotion runs until 31 May.

Find it at Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort and Spa Hotel, 2 Bukit Manis Road, Sentosa, Singapore 099891.

If your mum raised you by scrimping on herself and scouring the best deals, make her feel like a queen on this Mother’s Day. What’s more, true to her values, these offers would put her at ease, since you’re getting more bang for your buck for these buffets. If your mum loves understated elegance, opt for the Four Seasons’ award-winning One Ninety Restaurant featuring live stations and a sashimi bar, starting from $138++. What’s more, you can treat mum to a handcrafted bouquet for just $30.

Maybe having children didn’t stop your mum from marching to the beat of her own drum. If your mum is the sort who is game to try new things, why not take her to NOX, Singapore’s only dine-in-the-dark restaurant. Here you will rely on your remaining senses to savour the food in a pitch black room and spend some real quality time (without the distraction of handphones) with mum! The menu is a three-course mystery meal comprising 12 dishes, though there will also be a complimentary glass of sparkling wine – one less surprise there.

Each set is $88++, but mothers dine free with every three paying guests. The promotion is on 13 May, at 11.30am or 6pm.

At 89 years old, it is one of Singapore’s oldest restaurants and has definitely stood the test of time. The family-run kitchen can be relied on for consistently good Chinese food and lots of reminiscing. Sets for 10 people are $668++ or $898++ depending on the menu, though either choice comes with a roasted suckling pig. Promotion is available till 13 May.

For the no-nonsense mum

Maybe your mum’s a classic Asian tiger mum — curfews, few indulgences, and administering discipline (read: the cane) when it came to finishing homework. Hopefully, you’re a well-adjusted adult today, but chances are Mum is still her stoic, sensible self. Take her to Ryu’s, a sushi bar dedicated to delivering good food and great sake, for a solid, no-frills meal. The set is $128++ for two, with sake add-ons at $30++ per pax. Mum would approve.
