FRESH EATS: July’s 7 new spots will take you to foodie heaven!

We’ve finally reached the mid-year mark! The first half of the year has seen a flurry of new openings and revamps, so we’re bringing you seven new spots to boost your dining game for the next half of the year.

1. Godmama

New Spot Godmama
New Spot Godmama

If you haven’t already been, the newly revamped Funan Mall is THE HOTSPOT after Jewel at Changi. No kidding, this mall has a maze-like layout, and is filled to the brim with innovative retail stalls. That’s why it’s no doubt that Funan is home to one-of-a-kind dining spots like Godmama!

This Peranakan restaurant offers both indoor and alfresco seats, with the latter allowing you to have a great view of Funan’s rooftop garden. Godmama infuses modern elements into its traditional Peranakan plates—their All-Star Egg Skin Popiah is a hit with both the young and the old! Chock-full of comforting stewed veggie fillings, fresh prawns, and loaded with crispy garlic bits (the more crunch the better), their hearty popiah sure hits the spot after a day of exploring Funan’s facade.

We know, you’ve probably been to Joo Chiat for an #OOTD session or two along its pastel-hued shophouses, but here’s another reason to visit the hipster enclave. If you’re pacing around the East, wondering what to have for dinner, head to Jimoto Dining, a quaint Omakase restaurant nestled amongst the other stylish cafes and bars. Helmed by Chef Takahiro Sato, the restaurant serves affordable, quality Japanese fare.

As sushi lovers ourselves, we too were intrigued by how Chef Sato uses Akazu—Red Vinegar—to make the sushi rice. The Red Vinegar adds a touch of acidity, and gives an umami flavour to the sushi rice—oishi! Sake-lovers, we haven’t forgotten about you! With their extensive sake list, you’re sure to find the perfect drink for every course! All omakase courses at Jimoto Dining consist of an appetiser, sushi, and dish of the day from the hot-kitchen. If you’re looking for a quick-fix post work, take up the five-course Toki ($55+), served only from 6—7pm. On the other hand, their Introductory Sanpuru ($68+), innovative Kakushin ($98+) and the premium Zeitaku ($128+) are perfect choices if you’re looking to impress a date.

Find it at 325 Joo Chiat Road, Singapore 427582

To start off your night, try their Three-Tier Bar Food. Served in a tower reminiscent of high-tea dates with your aunties, this option consists of a mish-mash of their best bar bites, making sure you won’t have to fight over what dish to order!

This spot infuses elements from its Japanese outlets, offering creative options like the Tokyo Style Lasagna.

Unlike most Italian restaurants, goo Italiano shines the spotlight on Foccia Di Recco, a lighter version of Pizza. Their Foccia Di Recco comes in flavours like Parma Harm and Mushroom, great if you’re a traditionalist. But for those looking to try something different, we suggest the ‘Cacio e Pepe’, a version that infuses Baked Mash Potato and Cheese into the dough. 2. Farangse

Farangse Beef Cheek (fresh eats)
Farangse Interior (fresh eats)

Sweet, spicy and robust flavours are what comes to our minds when we think of Thai cuisine. French flavours on the other hand, are more subdued and sophisticated. But why choose between the two when you can have both? Farangse infuses elements of French and Issan (part of Thailand) cuisine into a one-of-a-kind gastro-medley!

Are you in need of a pick me up? Start off your meal with juicy oysters topped with refreshing Ikura. The kicker? Their oysters are served with Thai chili sauce—talk about a burst of flavor! If you aren’t a seafood-ie, give the Thai salads a go before moving on to the mains. Its perfect balance of sweet and sour is sure to whet your appetite! For the mains, tuck into the tender Beef Cheek, braised in red wine and nestled on a bed of mashed potatoes.

3. IZY Fook

Cr: IZY FOOK

We’re sure you’re a little confused by the wacky name. Meaning ‘一起福’ (together we prosper), this no-frills Japanese kitchen is inspired by old school Singaporean Cantonese restaurants. Step into IZY FOOK, and bask in the electric energy reminiscent of 70s Chinatown watering holes.

The swanky restaurant bar is split into two sections: The ‘Living Room’ and ‘Dining Hall’. Step into the ‘Living Room’ and be greeted by illustrations from Hong Kong’s up and coming illustrator Jonathan Jay Lee. Truly embodying its namesake, the ‘Living Room’ is where you can find ultra-hip diners bopping to lively hip hop tracks while noshing on roasted and charred Cantonese meats (siew yok anyone?). If you’re looking for a pre-drink snack, get the Buta No Shogayaki. It’s pan-seared ginger stick rolled with pork belly, deglazed with soy sauce and sansho slices. Super juicy and charred to perfection, there’s really no better way to kickstart your night! Need something heartier? You can’t go wrong with their Wagyu Truffle Don!

Looking to gather with friends over a cocktail or two? Head over to the ‘Dining Hall’. Located at the back of the restaurant, this cosy enclave is able to accommodate 50 people comfortably, and is perfect for a private hurrah with your favourite people!

Find it at 27 Club St, Singapore 069413

4. Noka

Just like you, we’re suckers for a good view. So where better to enjoy the spectacular Singaporean skyline than at rooftop restaurant NOKA! Perched atop the newly revamped Funan Digital Life Mall, this Japanese restaurant is located right smack in the middle of Singapore’s Civic District. Opening on 28thJune, NOKA is the brainchild behind by Spa Esprit, and sister restaurant to Open Farm Community, which is why the same level of dedication to nature and the environment is upheld.

The well-loved farm-to-table concept at OFC is extended to NOKA. We recommend choosing a seat near the windows, where you can sit back and relish in the stunning view of the 5000 sq-ft urban garden that runs alongside the restaurant walls. What’s more: veggies from the edible garden are used in NOKA’s dishes. Their ECG Mushroom and Black Cod Saiko-Yaki both utilize the garden’s wide array of herbs and vegetables, making sure you get the ultimate farm-to-table experience!

Find it at 109 North Bridge Rd, Singapore 179097

Since this is a festival that most of Indonesia celebrate, holiday-hotspot Bali will surely be buzzing with tourists from all over — expect some places to be packed like sardines! To prepare yourself, book the best restaurants beforehand so you won’t go home on an empty stomach. Here are some great places to celebrate the holiday season!

It’s time for some Bali-exploration! Be captivated by a kecak dance performance or visit the cheeky Ubud Monkey Forest for the ultimate Bali experience! After that, drop by the Habitat Cafe for a healthy and refreshing meal. But, if you feel like lazing the day away, sink into cool waters and watch the time fly by at Folk, or better yet! Enjoy stunning Ubud alongside Bali’s acclaimed sunset at Sayan House. Reservations are essential but fret not, we’ve got your back. Book your dinner at the best of Ubud — BLANCO par Mandif, Kubu at Mandapa, Pica, and bridges will be your best bets.

Seminyak

Mrs. Sippy Bali

Wander around Jl. Kayu Aya and pick your favourites from a treasure trove — from traditional handmade souvenirs to designer boutiques, you name it, this street has it. You won’t be lacking dinner options here in Seminyak with Mamasan, Sarong, Da Maria, and Barbacoa being definite favourites. When you’ve had your fill, dance the night away at La Favela, but don’t forget to snap some shots at the cute photobox on the second floor!

Get Comfy with Korea’s Ultimate Comfort Food at SBCD Korean Tofu House

The obsession with Korean culture doesn’t seem to be dying down anytime soon. Whether it’s fried chicken or K-BBQ, Singaporeans are all head-over-heels for Korean food.

However, if you’re looking for a healthier and more authentic option, then head down to SBCD Korean Tofu House for a generous, steaming bowl of soondubu stew. It’s hearty, comforting, and full of soft, silky tofu that’s unlike any other tofu we’ve had before.

IMG_6551

Every morning, the head chef at SBCD makes the tofu from scratch – a lengthy process involving immense amounts of patience and care – to ensure we get that magical jiggly softness. The chef has to soak the soya beans overnight, then grind them into a fine powder. He then cooks the mixture over a gentle flame, stirring several times every hour. After the tofu cools and sets, it’s cooked in the stew and goes straight into your belly.

Soondubu translates to “soft tofu”, though the word “soft” doesn’t even begin to describe its unique texture. The delicate tofu is silky-smooth and almost custardy, melting and breaking apart once it goes into your mouth. You’ll have to slurp instead of chew the pillowy chunks because yes, they really are that soft.

IMG_6564

SBCD Korean Tofu House is the only Korean restaurant in Singapore specialising in soondubu stew. They’re dedicated to giving everyone what Koreans call a “complete meal”, which must include rice, soup, and several sides. You’ll get a bowl of hot stone rice and a couple of side dishes with every order of stew, a filling and heart-warming combo that guarantees satisfaction in every bite.

Pro tip: instead of eating it straight from the hot stone bowl, scoop most of it out into a separate bowl, leaving the bits that stick to the sides of the hot stone. Then pour some hot tea (provided for free at every table) into the hot stone bowl, and cover it up until you’re done eating. You’ll get a sort of tea-porridge to cleanse your palate, which is apparently also good for digestion.

IMG_6556

Most of their stews use the same rich soup base, but you can choose your toppings and spice level. The stews are done on the milder and sweeter side, even though they’re all a fiery shade of red. You can err on the side of spicy, especially if you’re looking for a little more kick. The soup’s substantial and comforting, just what the doctor ordered for a cold, rainy day.

If you’re a chilli-phobe like me, then go for the sesame soup base (which is also vegetarian) or their Italian-inspired soups. We were wary of the idea of tofu with pasta and tomato sauce at first, but the combination was, surprisingly, not bad at all. There’s no question that traditional stews are more up their alley though.

IMG_6558.JPG

Craving a bit of savoury, chewy meat in between your mouthfuls of soondubu? The side dishes at SBCD are great additions to your meal, providing some welcome variation in taste and texture. We especially loved their pancakes, which are made to pancake perfection: crisp outside and soft inside. Their LA Galbi Beef is great as well – delightfully chewy and full of sweet and smoky flavours.

Chope’s Food Horoscope 2018

As 2018 welcomes itself into our lives, we look towards the Decadent Deities in the Cosmic Universe to give our Chope fans a delicious forecast for the year ahead.

Aries

Aries (21 Mar – 20 Apr)

As the zodiac’s trailblazing Ram, Aries has never faced any problems getting by solely on charisma and natural skills. However, 2018 may kick off with some instability and turbulence but not without opportunities for growth, which isn’t all that bad for a sign that’s known for weathering even the fiercest of storms!

While the Forceful Mars, your power planet, turns retrograde, you may be faced with some irritating moments this year; just stay calm and play it cool. Coincidentally, auspicious Jupiter lands in Scorpio which highlights your house of merging and intimacy. It’s time to gather your closest mates and hit up amazing restaurants that are perfect for a catch-up sesh over amazing food and even better conversations.

Taurus
Taurus (21 Apr – 20 May)

As we move into 2018, the planets have aligned in your favour, headstrong Taurus – there’s nothing stopping you now! When the Sun bursts into your enduring sign at the end of April, you become more focused and driven.

Later part of the year, the rebellious Uranus turns retrograde in your sign until January 2019; by the time, you should be armed and ready to venture out of your comfort zone. There’s no doubting that you’re one of the most traditional signs of the zodiac, but there will come a time where you know you have to change with the times. Mix things up, try something new, and don’t be afraid of progress. Venture into Singapore’s ever-evolving foodscape and experience new eats that you’ve yet to discover – the world is your oyster.

Gemini

Gemini (21 May – 20 Jun)

Dear Gemini, my fickle-hearted friend, we know that nothing in the world can hold you down. While your penchant for freedom knows no bounds, 2018 may just be the year for you to start getting grounded.

While your sign is famous for biting off more than you can chew, you’ll find yourself craving simplicity as Jupiter orbits into Scorpio that rules health. Embrace a “less is more” mindset and focus on what matters most; switch up your diet to incorporate healthier eating or factor in regular workouts at the gym. Since Jupiter is also the planet of expansion, don’t be surprised to find yourself gaining a little bit of curviness during this cycle! Our advice: embrace it.

Cancer
Cancer (21 Jun – 20 Jul)

Oh Cancer, you wear your heart on your sleeve – and for a good reason too. In 2018, the theme of love looks persistent in both challenging and inspiring aspects. The ever expansive Jupiter will be paying your house a visit until November 8, giving you plenty of chances to shine creatively and romantically.

Whether it be love between couples, love for your family, or self-love (for you beautiful singles out there), look towards the kitchen for a home-cooked meal that nurtures the heart. If cooking isn’t your forte, why not check out some of Singapore’s most romantic dining spots? When it comes to love, have faith and all shall fall into place.

Leo
Leo (21 Jul – 20 Aug)

The limelight is where you feel most at home, fearless lion! While you have no problems showing the world what you’ve got, the challenge this year will be learning how to spice things up. Try not to let your tendency to overreact interfere with your poise and charm; hang in there a little while longer and the emergence of Leo moon in the middle of the year will allow you to unleash your full potential.

When that time comes, embrace all things Leo and immerse yourself in all the glitz and glamour that after hour parties have to offer! From late night eats to Singapore’s best bars, flourish in the night and soak up the festivities because you’re born to shine.

Virgo
Virgo (21 Aug – 20 Sept)

In every group dynamic, there’s always the perfectionist – and who better to play the role than our vigilant Virgo?

While you’re perfectly happy sticking to the familiar, 2018 may just be the year you step out of your comfort zone. The ever-expansive Jupiter finds its way into Scorpio and it’ll make itself comfortable there until November; variety becomes the main theme of the year, encouraging you to break away from the norm.

Used to taking the train home? Try taking the bus instead for a change of scenery. We all know your usual noodle spot for lunch but maybe you could try another cuisine instead – or better, go fusion! You might also like to venture around Singapore and discover a new part of town, or pop by neighbouring countries for a short getaway.

Libra
Libra (21 Sept – 20 Oct)

This year’s looking mighty fine for you, Libra! As Jupiter spends most of its time in Scorpio, stabilising your second House, nothing is going to faze you because your year is going to be UH-MAY-ZING (not that you need the planets to tell you that)!

The second House rules work, money, and security; with Jupiter finding solace here, things at work are going to be a breeze. Finances will grow in abundance, and as much as you prioritise balance, it’s about high time you give yourself a pat on the back and relish in something fancy once in a while.

Scorprio
Scorpio (21 Oct – 20 Nov)

Everyone’s secretive Scorpio, it doesn’t seem like things will change much as you continue keeping your guard up in 2018. And there’s no fault in that either — you can’t change your basic nature — but there comes a time when improvements have to be made!

When Mercury comes together with Pluto, your ruling planet, you will find that secrets have its way of unravelling themselves for you. It would be wise to use the information that you gain in a way that benefits yourself as well as others too.

Sagittarius
Sagittarius (21 Nov – 20 Dec)

Our ambitious and audacious Archer, life is just one big adventure after another. No matter what 2018 throws at you, you take those challenges and shoot ‘em right back!

It comes as no surprise that you have a penchant for travel; your urge to pull off something huge may be hindered by the Sun, moving against Jupiter, your ruling planet. Don’t let this stop you from satisfying your sense of wanderlust, though: you can still travel the world (via your taste buds!) at top restaurants that offer the best of global eats, all within our Little Red Dot!

Capricorn
Capricorn (21 Dec – 20 Jan)

People may think of you as an overachiever but we all know that you see the rewards in discipline and hard work, careful Capricorn. You know that hard work pays off, and 2018 continues to provide for you as long as you strive for what you want.

A “special someone” may be right above the fray when the solar eclipse in Cancer catapults you into your committed relationship house. This gives rise to unexpected developments with both love and business over the coming six months. Nurture those relationships by way of food — whether it be with yourself (#treatyoself), a loved one, or at work.

Aquarius
Aquarius (21 Jan – 20 Feb)

You know you’re larger than life, beloved Aquarius – with an attitude like that, nothing’s gonna get you down! As the radiant Sun settles in your House earlier in the year, this prompts you to be the most of ‘Aquarius’ (read: unpredictable) you can be.
Your happy-go-lucky demeanour may get you through anything life throws at you but take heed: 2018 calls for more attention on your personal connections, so don’t take your close ones for granted.

As you thrive on technology, use that to your advantage by documenting precious moments with your loved ones (put your social media skills to good use!). Spend quality time by taking a stroll in the park or dine in gorgeously lush greenery; however you choose to bond, remember to capture those moments so you’ll have something to remember them by.

Pisces
Pisces (21 Feb – 20 Mar)

As the final House in the zodiac, people tend to take advantage of your kindness and compassion, gentle Pisces. It’s about high time you move away from your self-sacrifice and focus on yourself this year! As the brilliant Sun finds solace in your sign, shift your focus towards activities that involve or are near bodies of water.

Plan a seaside vacation or go on a cruise; if finances are tight, why not go for something a little closer to home? Nothing says “surrounded by water” like dining on Sentosa island! This would be a good time to rejuvenate and focus on self-love before your ruling planet Neptune turns retrograde towards the second half of the year, throwing you more challenges that are almost impossible to escape from.
