Chope Diners’ Choice 2020: Restaurant of the Year – The Top 5

Answering the perennial question of “where can we find good food?”, Chope Diners’ Choice 2020 presents the Top 5 Restaurants of the Year, as voted by our city’s foodies. Ready to ‘eat till you drop’? Drumroll please ~

1: THE LINE

Buffet Spread at Shangri-La Hotel, The Line.

Stealing the show with its extensive menu of global cuisines is Shangri-La Hotel’s flagship restaurant, The Line. From seafood on ice, to sushi, to naan baked in a tandoor oven, its 88 delectable made-to-order dishes are simply to die for. We can see why this buffet restaurant is a winner for diners, with it clinching awards for two consecutive years in a row, bagging both ‘Restaurant Of The Year’ in 2020 and ‘Best Bountiful Buffet’ in 2019.

2: FAT COW

As the first runner-up for the Restaurant of the Year category, Fat Cow never fails to keep diners coming back for more of their extensive handpicked selection of the finest Wagyu from reputable farms in Japan. There’s no wonder here why they have been clinching awards at Chope’s Diners’ Choice year after year. Everything from their signature Japanese Wagyu beef, to the appetizing Whisky Fat Sour, complemented by the contemporary interior design Japanese “Wabi-Sabi” concept, this unique fusion of a shabu, open-kitchen dining experience is not one to be missed.

3: JUMBO SEAFOOD

It’s never too early to start planning ahead for CNY reunion dinners! Singapore has long been a seafood haven but in recent years we’ve seen many new seafood establishments come up all across the island. But it seems, for most of Singapore’s foodies, nothing beats the familiar and well-loved Chilli Crab from one of Singapore’s oldest and most recognised home-grown brands, JUMBO Seafood. Seeing how locals and tourists alike flock to this popular seafood spot during the festive season, we’d suggest you book a table early!

4: IO ITALIAN OSTERIA SINGAPORE

This hidden gem within the sleepy neighbourhood of Hillview presents an authentic Italian experience with its signature pastas, as well as their fragrant freshly-baked bread speckled with delicious tomatoes or mushrooms. During peak hours, diners transform this warm, cosy space into a buzzing diner, filled with chatter and a lively atmosphere.

5: CANDLENUT

At Candlenut, the beloved and traditional Peranakan cuisine is getting its time in the limelight thanks to chef-owner Malcolm Lee’s deft work and skill that garnered him a Michelin star two years in a row. Be prepared to fall head over heels for standouts such as the Blue Swimmer Crab Curry.

Bali’s top 30 for the holiday season!

Eng | Bahasa

It’s that time of the year again! Like they say, “A little bit of summer is what the whole year’s all about”, and this time, summer coincides with the Muslim religious holiday, Eid-al-Fitr. Since this is a festival that most of Indonesia celebrate, holiday-hotspot Bali will surely be buzzing with tourists from all over — expect some places to be packed like sardines! To prepare yourself, book the best restaurants beforehand so you won’t go home on an empty stomach. Here are some great places to celebrate the holiday season!

Ubud

Kemiri Restaurant (COMO Uma Ubud)

Welcome to the land of yoga and wellness. Take a stroll through Campuhan Ridge Walk, enjoy the lush scenery, and unplug for a bit. Afterwards, you can have an authentic Indonesian lunch at Hujan Locale, Kemiri, Nomad, or The Restaurant at the Chedi Club Tanah Gajah.

It’s time for some Bali-exploration! Be captivated by a kecak dance performance or visit the cheeky Ubud Monkey Forest for the ultimate Bali experience! After that, drop by the Habitat Cafe for a healthy and refreshing meal. But, if you feel like lazing the day away, sink into cool waters and watch the time fly by at Folk, or better yet! Enjoy stunning Ubud alongside Bali’s acclaimed sunset at Sayan House. Reservations are essential but fret not, we’ve got your back. Book your dinner at the best of Ubud — BLANCO par Mandif, Kubu at Mandapa, Pica, and bridges will be your best bets.

Seminyak

Mrs. Sippy Bali

Oh my, we seriously don’t know where to start. Seminyak is such a fun area to explore! Experience the largest saltwater pool at Mrs. Sippy, grab a quick bite at Bo & Bun, or put on your sunnies and sip on a cold rosé while enjoying a delightful meal at Ijen, whereby zero wastage is promoted to lower carbon footprint. Wander around Jl. Kayu Aya and pick your favourites from a treasure trove — from traditional handmade souvenirs to designer boutiques, you name it, this street has it. You won’t be lacking dinner options here in Seminyak with Mamasan, Sarong, Da Maria, and Barbacoa being definite favourites. When you’ve had your fill, dance the night away at La Favela, but don’t forget to snap some shots at the cute photobox on the second floor!

Canggu

From_the_Land_Tongseng_Kambing_1554128131
SVÁ Indonesian Tapas & Bar

If Seminyak and Ubud were to have a child, Canggu would be their baby. Start your day right by joining a barre class or relax through sunrise flow yoga at Fitspot Bali. Then, move on to indulge in great food at all-time favourite cafe Milk & Madu at Jl. Pantai Berawa, or enjoy a caffeine boost amidst ravishing rice fields at Cinta Cafe. Another must do is renting a motorbike and visiting the bustling local flea market around Batu Bolong area — like they say, reuse and recycle! Spend the rest of your afternoon lounging and watching the sunset from the beautiful La Brisa, surf at Echo Beach, or lay back and relax at the sophisticated COMO beach club. Spoil your taste buds with an exotic twist on traditional Indonesian flavour at SVÁ Indonesian Tapas & Bar. If Japanese is your thing, modern restaurants Musubi and Ji are some of the eateries we take delight in.

Kuta

When hunger strikes, pay a visit to our favourite Italian places — Il Tempio and Jamie’s Italian Bali are just around the corner. Waterbom Bali is a One-of-a-Kind experience you just have to try in the city, and we believe you deserve a medal for completing the thrilling 5GX Reverse Bungy without throwing up. Treat yourself to a delicious meal of juicy, tender dry-aged meat at Henry’s Grill and Bar, or stuff your face at Feast Restaurant, located in Bali Kuta Resort. We hope you brought your dancing shoes, because LXXY is a glamorous nightclub not to be missed.

ChopePerks: What can you do with 10,000 Chope-Dollars?

Ok, so you’re no newbie; you’re on your way to making Chope reservations like a pro, there’s a list of favourite restaurants you’ve dined at parked away in your brain, and your account is filling nicely with Chope-Dollars. Now what? It’s time to get spending, my friend. Multiply your Chope-Dollars, multiply your experiences with ChopePerks!

Let’s imagine you have 10,000 C$ – what could you do? (If you already passed that amount ages ago – teach us your ways, shifu.)

1. Fulfil your wanderlust

image.png

Cr: myotonic.org

At 1,000 KrisFlyer miles for every 1,200 C$ redeemed, this is seriously one of the best ways to get miles. Chope reservations are free, and with earnings starting at 100 Chope-Dollars per booking, swapping them out for miles will take no time at all. With 10,000 C$, you can redeem a whopping 8,000 Krisflyer miles, then use the remaining 400C$ to enjoy a 7% discount on Agoda hotel bookings. Pack your bags, you’re ready to go!

2. Dig in without wallet worries

unspecified.jpg

Using vouchers to pay for a meal can be totally fine. Of course, don’t pull them out at key events like the first date or a very important business meeting with higher-ups, but at other times? They could make an already unforgettable experience even better. Redeem 10,000 C$ for $300 worth of cash vouchers that you can use to offset the bill at restaurants. Italian to Japanese, fine dining to casual cafes, your C$ can be used to make your tummy – and friends – happy without hurting your wallet.

Still not sure where you’re going yet? Then you might find it more useful to redeem your C$ for discount codes that entitle you to future restaurant voucher purchases on shop.chope.co.

3. Shop til you drop

image.png

Cr: mandalaybay.com

Let’s start with a little something for the makeup junkies, whether that’s you or someone you know. How does $5 off your Sephora online purchase sound? We did the math: your 10,000 C$ can be exchanged for $400 worth of Sephora makeup products (note: each user can only redeem a $5 voucher per transaction on Sephora). We know — we’ve already put this to good use. If you don’t fancy makeup, however, there are other lifestyle options from HipVan and CapitaStar vouchers to satisfy the shopaholic in you.

Krisflyer and Agoda rewards are available across all cities on Chope. For those who are in Bangkok, Jakarta, Hong Kong, and Singapore, get up and moving because you can redeem your C$ for GuavaPass reward. Ready to shop till you drop? Shopee rewards are yours to keep if you’re in Bangkok, Jakarta, and Bali. To our Thai friends in Bangkok, Happy Fresh and Starbucks perks are waiting for you! Also, our Hong Kong friends can redeem 4,000 or 8,000 Reward-U points with C$!

C$_blog_SG

Here’s a tip: if you want to earn C$ faster, keep making reservations on Chope to hit the higher tiers. As you Chope your way up tiers with ChopePerks, the amount of C$ you earn will speed up as well.

Members and Bronze Members get 1X Chope-Dollars for every completed booking while Silver and Gold Members receive 1.25X and 1.5X Chope-Dollars respectively. Be the best of the best, a Platinum member, to boast 1.75X C$ for each booking.

The more C$ you have, the more rewards you can redeem! And after all that glorious eating, ChopePerks is here to give you the rewards you rightly deserve. Remember: only reservations made through www.chope.co and the Chope app are counted, so download the app today!

Fuel up at one of these 7 restaurants near enough to beat the F1 crowd

We get it. It’s that time of the year where it feels like a mini nation or two descends upon the Marina Bay area — the F1 Grand Prix. Whether you’re there for Martin Garrix or Lewis Hamilton, we’ve highlighted a few Chope restaurants that you can book so you can beat the crowds and get your grub.

1. Salted and Hung

unspecified-4.jpeg

Nearest MRT: Esplanade

What better way to pregame the F1 with this contemporary Australian restaurant’s boozy brunch extended to 6pm on 15 and 16 September! For $58++, eat charcuterie, smoked halibut, yogurt et cetera to your heart’s content. Another $35++ nets you wine, beer, and cocktails. Don’t forget to taste some of chef Drew Nocente’s housemade salami, salsicca, lardo and coppa — his skill in traditional curing methods show, and you’ll be heading back for more, F1 or not.

Find it at 12 Purvis St, Singapore 188591

2. Folklore

unspecified-5.jpeg

Nearest MRT: Nicoll Highway

This Peranakan restaurant at one of Singapore’s newest hotels gets the cuisine right. We love the fish head curry, chap chye, and the buah keluak fried rice especially. They cook the food with love (read: a little on the slow side), but we believe that the F1 is as good as any other opportunity to make a meal out of it. Our tip: have an early dinner, fill yourselves up and saunter over to the circuit in time to catch your favourite racer take his place on the podium.

Find it at 700 Beach Road, Level 2, Destination Singapore Beach Road, Singapore 199598

3. Paulaner Brauhaus Millenia Walk

unspecified-6.jpeg

Nearest MRT: Promenade

If you don’t want anything too stuffy — whether you mean straight-laced or a lack of ventilation — Paulaner Brauhaus is perfect. This three-storey microbrewery is 100 percent casual, offering authentic German beer (the bronze boiler that sits at the centre of the bar is a must-see) that is particularly refreshing on a hot day. Can’t go wrong with the food either. We’re fans of the Beef Beer Goulash and the Pork Escalope. This place is also good for big groups, capable of seating up to 250 people in total — great if you are heading to the race with your entire department.

Find it at 9 Raffles Boulevard, #01-01, Millenia Walk, Singapore 039596

4. KURO Izakaya

unspecified-7.jpeg

Nearest MRT: Promenade

This contemporary izakaya stands out in greying Suntec City, not just because of its warm decor but also for its welcoming yakitori scents. Start off with an ice cold beer (or an orange calpis, if alcohol is not your thing) then better order away because the menu is long and you have cars to get back to. We’d recommend a few sticks of Grilled Kushiyaki, like Pork Belly or Tsukune (chicken meatball), and other comfort food like Curry Croquettes and Tonkotsu Udon. This laid-back restaurant is a good place to get your F1 vibe going.

Find it at 3 Temasek Boulevard, #01-604/605, Suntec City Tower 3, Singapore 038983

5. Qi – House of Sichuan Singapore

unspecified-8.jpeg

Nearest MRT: Bayfront

The newest branch of the eponymous Michelin starred restaurant in Macau is right here in Singapore. If you need to turn up the heat (in air-conditioned comfort, of course), head over to the Marina Bay Link Mall and fire away with the Chili Oil Wontons, Bang Bang Chicken, Angus Beef Short Ribs with Mala Sauce and so on. Qi opens till 10pm, so you can keep this as a late night option, too.

6. Caffe Fernet

unspecified-9.jpeg

Nearest MRT: Raffles Place

This gorgeous restaurant in the historic Customs House opens up to a view of the Singapore River — a perfect setting to catch glimpses of cars accelerating down our cityscape. Drinks here are particularly ‘grammable, and you can’t go wrong since it is by the same folks behind cocktail hot spots like Jigger & Pony and Gibson. Feeling peckish? Caffe Fernet puts its own spin on traditional Italian food, and serves up a delightful charred octopus with fried chickeas, as well as simple cacio e pepe that hits the spot. There’s plenty of finger food too, like tomato poppers or olives, if you need a breather from the race.

7. PS Cafe Raffles City

unspecified-10.jpg

Nearest MRT: City Hall

This household staple might be a common sight along the Orchard Road stretch, but here at its Raffles City branch, the high ceiling, greenhouse-esque shell in which the cafe sits may be a good place to get away from the crowds and revving engines. Dig into comforting soul foods like its Truffle Shoestring Fries, indulge in a juicy burger or Tiger Beer-Battered Fish and Chips, then wind down with a Sticky Date Steamed Pudding. Satiated? It’s time to make your way back to the circuit then.

Feast like a Beast with your loved ones this Hari Raya Haji

This Wednesday (Aug 22) marks Hari Raya Haji, an important day for Muslims who reflect on the story of Allah commanding Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ishmael. While this day is not about the big feasts and festivities we come to associate with Hari Raya Puasa, the end of Ramadan, family get-togethers are still embedded into its make-up. Chope rounds up a few restaurants perfect for fellowship and great conversations.

Mamanda Restaurant

Partake in Malay fine dining this holiday, set in a beautifully preserved Kampong Glam mansion once the home of the Bendahara, second only to the Sultan in rank. Mamanda serves up a mean nasi ambeng – a large platter featuring a huge mound of rice in the centre and surrounded by Malay classics like beef rendang, chicken curry, sambal prawns and fried fish. Perfect for a family get-together.

This halal British kitchen pays homage to all the classics, so don’t miss the bangers and mash or the cod fish and chips! And if you want to feel all Harry Potter with the kids, grab a mug or two of the non-alcoholic butter beer. Just like a London pub, this place is pretty chill – great if you’re looking for some quality time to let loose with your loved ones.

Sofra Turkish Restaurant

It’s hard not to love Sofra, especially their amazing doner kebabs (the special sauce is to die for), eggplant mussaka, and grape leaf rolls (if they haven’t sold out). This unassuming restaurant in the super chill Shaw Towers can hold large groups, and with its value-for-money options, what’s stopping you from booking a table?

You don’t have to fly all the way to Bali to sink your teeth into some crispy duck. Gather your friends at this no-frills outlet in Lucky Plaza, and indulge yourself in the duck and a portion or two of the duck skin. Make sure you have a taste of the cabe ijo, a green chili sauce that packs a punch. Wash it all down with the sayur asam, a sour tamarind soup that cuts through the fat.

The Great Mischief

Cr: discoversg.com

Located in a hipster hotel that looks like it was transplanted from the set of a Wes Anderson movie, The Great Mischief will appeal to foodies galore as one of the few restaurants here offering Catalan dishes. The pollo al ajillo (fried chicken wings marinated in garlic, chili and oil) is addictive, while the solomillo con queso de cabra (sirloin and goat cheese) is wickedly indulgent. Take your Instagram-worthy pics around the hotel after that to immortalise a family dinner to remember.

Food on wheels: Wheelchair-friendly restaurants in Singapore

Entrances in the back alley, toilets used as storage spaces, steps everywhere – these are just some of the problems faced by wheelchair users in Singapore. From a food and watering den to a cosy 15-seater cafe, these wheelchair-friendly restaurants offer great food with the convenience of accessibility, making the enjoyment available for everyone.

1. Professor Brawn Cafe

Founded by a couple who wants to make a difference to the special needs community, Professor Brawn is a social enterprise that provides good, affordable food by an inclusive workforce. The namesake, Professor Brawn, was created by the founders’ child, who has a learning disability.

The cafe serves a selection of Western food. We love their signature Fish and Chips, which has just the right amount of crisp. Best of all, their generous servings are perfect for sharing between a parent and a child. There’s also a wide range of desserts on the menu, enough to satisfy the sweetest of teeth!

Accessibility

  • Alighting point from nearest mode of transportation
The route from Novena MRT takes around 5 minutes. The drop off point is also accessible.

Tucked away at a quiet residential area in Clementi, this cafe is easy to spot for many reasons. Its bright exterior – light blue doors with yellow tinted glass – greets you a mile away. Try their best-selling cake, Mister Chocolate, a hefty slice of chocolate sponge with chocolate chips, and covered in a shiny layer of – you guessed it – melted chocolate.

Don’t have a sweet tooth? Relish in their savoury offerings instead, which range from your usual brunch items like Eggs Benedict to local favourites like Mee Siam. Before you leave, don’t forget to catch a glimpse of W39’s other star attraction – Mimi, their resident cat, is often curled up in a warm corner of the bistro.

Accessibility

  • Alighting point from nearest mode of transportation
The route from the nearest bus stop (17069) along West Coast Road takes around 7 minutes. The drop off point is also accessible.

3. Food For Thought

unspecified
unspecified-1
Now located in the National Museum, Food For Thought is returning to their roots. The marble table tops, wall mosaic, and wooden chairs are a homage to the humble kopitiam. The food is also a mix of hearty brunch staples and bistro fare inspired by local flavours. Think Mee Siam linguine, Ma Ling spam fries and Ribena sponge cake (from the folks behind In The Brick Yard). Due to its museum locale, you can also find carefully curated items and exclusive Singaporean tales in the atrium. We say, come for the food, stay for the cultural experience!

4. Brawn & Brains

This cosy spot sits only 15 people at a time. It’s packed every weekend, filled with people who want to relive their Melbourne cafe experience. When the sunlight shines through the glass wall, you’ll find yourself thinking back to Flinders Lane. Like a true-blue Australian cafe, its showstopper is the coffee. Choose from Single Origin or House Blend Pen & Pencil depending on your mood. Priced at SGD$3.50 per cup, it’s also the most affordable latte around town. Grab a panini and spend your weekend leisurely in this quiet corner.
