This September, we’ve added a whole new range of restaurants on Chope. Fancy a change to your usual haunts for food? Here are 5 new restaurants that we have gathered for you. Discover these fresh spots and book your seats!

1. Crystal Jade Pavilion

We love a good classic Chinese feast at Crystal Jade’s chain of restaurants, and the new Crystal Jade Pavilion is sure to elevate your dining experience. Located in Crowne Plaza Changi Airport, the brand-new restaurant serves up your familiar dim sums, as well as modern interpretations of classic dishes. Some of our recommended must-tries include the Crab Steamed with Egg White that will remind you of chawanmushi and Sautéed Beef Cubes with Foie Gras Sauce & Garlic.

The elegant and contemporary décor of the restaurant is a perfect place for your family gatherings and celebrations, with a wide-range of choices on its menu that are suitable for sharing.

Find it at 75 Airport Boulevard, #01-02 Crowne Plaza Changi Airport, Singapore 819664

2. The Garden Club

It’s all about healthy and wholesome foods at The Garden Club. A rare find in the busy CBD, The Garden Club at the 5th floor of OUE Downtown Gallery houses an indoor seating area, as well as a rooftop al fresco bar.

In the day, customise your quick serve protein bowls that you could enjoy for lunch. At nightfall, see the space transform into a hang-out spot serving up yummy plates, from meats to a variety of vegetables, healthy grains and all-vegan desserts!

With the belief for affordable and conscious-eating, the extensive range of vegan options caught our eye. We’re talking Garden Ragu Fettuccine made from a house-made specialty Beyond Meat™ ragu sauce, Barley Mushroom Risotto, and more!

Find it at 6A Shenton Way, #05-01OUE Downtown Gallery, Singapore 068815

3. Grand Cru at South Courtyard

Fine wines paired with cheeses, asian dishes, and western favourites. Does that sound like a perfect night out for you?

The new Grand Cru at the South Courtyard of The Fullerton Hotel Singapore boasts a wide range of wines and food options. Need recommendations for a bottle? Or are you looking for a particular bottle? Grand Cru’s dedicated sommelier will be sure to give you a personal recommendation, depending on your preference or occasion!

The must-tries at Grand Cru include the Roasted Duck in Chef’s Special Sauce from Jade restaurant, Asian favourites like Char Kway Teow, and western signatures like the Fullerton Burger and Truffle fries.

Find it at 1 Fullerton Square, Lobby – Level 1, South Courtyard The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, Singapore 049178

4. Beurre

One of the newest restaurants along Bukit Pasoh Road, Beurre is helmed by head chef Darwin Wong, who built a modern and innovative French menu for the restaurant. Much thought was put into the menu, and the best part? Beautifully plated dishes at affordable prices!

Beurre is butter in French, and it is an important ingredient in the kitchen at this restaurant. The highlights in its menu includes the 10-day Butter-aged Angus Ribeye, and the Portebello Mushroom Tart with leek cream and poached eggs.

At lunch, you can find their signature rice bowls and sharing plates, perfect for your lunch date, or a satisfying meal with your company.

Find it at  23 Bukit Pasoh Road, Singapore 089837

5. Tiffany Cafe & Restaurant

Here’s a new buffet spot on Chope! Located in Furama City Centre, the halal-certified kitchen at Tiffany Cafe & Restaurant presents a buffet line with an array of international cuisine. The highlights of this buffet? The local flavours of course. You must not miss the Hainanese Chicken Rice, Authentic Laksa, and the Durian Pengat (a dessert made from coconut milk, sugar, and durians)!

Have some of your food served at live cooking stations too, as you see your favourite dishes being prepared right in front of you. The cosy ambience at Tiffany Cafe & Restaurant is perfect for a gathering and celebration with your loved ones and friends.

6 Healthy Yet Tasty Restaurants for Guilt-Free Dining

It’s been almost six months since we promised to hit the gym, lose a few kilos, or lead a healthier lifestyle. We round up a list of healthy restaurants that don’t compromise on flavour — equally useful whether you’ve kind of slacked off in that regard, or just need an idea for where to take the not-yet-converted to eat.

1. Original Sin

Mediterranean WrapPasta

This Lorong Mambong staple — it’s more than 20 years old — consistently serves up delish Mediterranean dishes with an Italian vibe. The best part? It’s vegetarian, and some recipes can even be vegan or gluten-free. The Moussaka (eggplant-meat casserole) is a classic, but if you are craving something rich (but waistline-friendly), try the Zucca Fettuccine, or zucchini pasta. Don’t forget to check out the lunch deals, which make a trip here hard to resist.

Find it at Blk 43 #01-62 Jalan Merah Saga, Chip Bee Gardens, Singapore 278115.

2. Verde Kitchen

Verde Kitchen Vietnamese PhoVerde Kitchen Avocado Composition.jpg

#SupportLocal by dining in this latest offering from the Hilton, where the half the menu features local and sustainably sourced ingredients. Eat salads, soups and mains packed with superfoods like kale and pomegranate. We like the Avocado Composition, which shines the spotlight on a hearty avocado dressing over tangy grapefruit, heirloom tomatoes and couscous. On cheat days, we’d opt for the Super Food Grilled Haloumi, reassured that even then, it’s not that bad for our calorie intake.

Find it at 581 Orchard Road, Level 2, Hilton Singapore, Singapore 238883.

Want to eat clean and in a gorgeous setting? Look no further. Boasting raw, dairy-free, nut-rich foods, The Living Cafe shows us how to eat healthily without compromising on taste. The menu is comprehensive, running the gamut from appetisers to desserts. The TLC ‘Cheese’ Burger is a work of art, getting the taste and texture of a hearty beef burger without using meat or cheese. Other recommended dishes: the Guacamole Flax Seed Chips, Honey Glazed Chicken Whole Wheat Wraps, and the dozens of healthy desserts on offer.

Find it at 779 Bukit Timah Rd, Singapore 269758.

4. Plentyfull

Hand-rolled PastaFrench Toast

Plentyfull not only gives you another gorgeous setting to embrace your new healthy lifestyle but nudges you to commit to it with a range of tasty dishes. Whether you’re craving something like Lemongrass and Assam Grilled Chicken or Granola at 5pm, this place has you covered. 5. Lingzhi Vegetarian

Sautéed Fresh Cordyceps Huai Shan and Winged BeansPoached Mixed Rice with Vegetables
Say ‘vegetarian’, and Westernised salads and cold cuts come to mind. But there are days when we just want warm and hearty food, the kind that reminds us of our grandmother hovering over stoves, making our favourite dishes. Lingzhi does just that: the meat might be fake but the tastiness is real. The best part is that the recently revamped restaurant doesn’t rely on additives or gluten to give us texture; the chefs now emphasise organic, fresh ingredients to pack in that flavour. If you don’t believe us, try the Peking Duck or Lasagna and see for yourself!

6. Santap

Beef Rice BowlSantap Flatlay

This hip, halal and health-conscious joint in Little India offers rice bowls with a South Asian spin. Having an Instaworthy cafe with its semi-industrial vibe doesn’t hurt either. There are fewer worries about losing the war on diabetes here — the ‘rice’ is either wholegrain brown rice or cauliflower florets, and the accompaniments flavourful, whether its fresh salmon, lean beef or tender lamb. For those with smaller appetites, sandwiches are on offer, as is an array of freshly squeezed juices.

Find it at 16 Madras Street, Singapore 208413.

Dining with Children: Family-Friendly Restaurants

Parenthood is tough enough as it is without having to worry about where to go. We scoured our sunny island to find the best restaurants that will give you a chance to unwind, and your kid space to run around or things to do (yes, something other than an iPhone). The best part? These joints can all be booked on Chope! We know you don’t have time to call to make a reservation when you have a screaming toddler on your hands.

Open-Farm-Community-Crispy-Jurong-Frog-Legs_preview.jpeg
Open Farm Community

Healthy and fresh food that tastes great, and available in kid-sized portions? A pretty, air-conditioned interior for you to catch a breather? A playground featuring a larger-than-life cow for your kid to climb on? Check, check, and check. It’s hard for a restaurant to have it all, but Open Farm Community somehow manages. You can also make the trip an educational one by taking your kid around the herb garden and putting him in touch with nature.

Find it at 130 Minden Road, Singapore 248819

HRC-Java-Lava-Burger_preview.jpeg
Hard Rock Cafe

This rock and roll hall of fame may not sound like an instinctive place to take your child, but it is one of the few restaurants that have always treated its younger customers like, well, rock stars. Kids are entertained with balloons and colouring activities, and it helps that their delicious burgers and fajitas will go down well (no worries about picky children there). Another plus point: you expose your kids to music greats like David Bowie and Michael Jackson.

Find it at 50 Cuscaden Road, #05-01, Singapore 249724

NK-Kueh-Dah-Dah_preview.jpeg
National Kitchen by Violet Oon

This gorgeous, 1920s colonial style dining space is a sight for sore eyes and great for family-style meals. While Peranakan dishes can be polarising – fussy kids may find some of them pungent or too spicy – it makes for a good discussion of a culture not many know about at the dinner table. In true Singaporean style, the education can continue after the meal at the rest of the National Gallery, which often has children-friendly exhibitions running.

Find it at 1 St. Andrew’s Road #02–01, National Gallery, Singapore 178957

LaBarca-7_preview.jpeg
La Barca Ristorante & Wine Bar

Maybe you need some tender loving care. Treat yourself to a glass of wine (or two) and some fancy Italian, and let your kids scream their heads off at the bouncy castle/water slide contraption outside. You can still keep an eye on them through the glass panels, and the restaurant also provides towels when they’ve tired themselves out. Go on, crack open that Cab Sav – you deserve it.

Find it at 90 Goodman Rd, #01-21 Block C, Goodman Arts Centre, Singapore 439053

Saint Pierre

Maybe your child is a budding Gordon Ramsay, or you want to introduce him to the world of fine dining early. At $85 a pop, chefs Emmanuel Stroobant and KimKevin de Dood have come up with a curated menu suited to taste buds of those 9 years and younger. It’s certainly not cheap, but it may help your child develop an early appreciation behind the art and science that is cooking.

Find it at 1 Fullerton Road, #02-02B One Fullerton, Singapore 049213

Citrus By The Pool_BIG Boss Burger.jpg
Citrus By The Pool

This comfy bistro may be tucked away in the quiet suburbs of Woodlands but don’t let its humble exterior fool you. They are the go-to for many families looking to get their fill of comforting cafe grub, and for a good reason. Their latest additions to the menu are a lineup of banging burgers that will give any global burger chain a run for their money! The portions here are ginormous to boot, which means that a little goes a long way when it comes to feeding the little ones. The best part? Citrus By The Pool is Halal-certified, giving Muslim families a peace of mind too.

Sip on a piña colada while your child gulps down a Peachy Beachy (a mocktail, don’t worry) at this laidback restaurant on Siloso Beach. There’s not much in the way of activities here but your child can entertain herself building sandcastles. The food is hearty and familiar, with fish and chips, pizzas, and pasta on the menu.

Scrumptious Hidden Gems in Singapore

With Singapore’s diverse variety of cuisines, classic or fusion, we’re a must-stop for culinary connoisseurs. As many famous restaurants as there are in Singapore, there will often be hidden gems. Some are simply local secrets, while others have taken a step beyond to actively hide with innocuous storefronts and clever camouflaging. Here are some of the more secluded spots that your even your Singaporean friend may not know of!

chin-lee-restaurant (1)

Chin Lee Restaurant

Founded in 1973, this family-run restaurant for families is located in the heartland of Singapore, Bedok. A considerably “ulu” (rural) area, the restaurant is mostly known to only locals living nearby. Chin Lee has been serving humble Teochew fare to Singaporeans for years, adhering to their promise of comfort, scrumptious food, and excellent service. Visitors and fellow Singaporeans alike, don’t miss out!

Find it at Blk 115 Bedok North Road #01-285, Singapore (460115)

Cafe Colbar

Trek through the bushes for a taste of Colonial Singapore. Cafe Colbar was established by a Mr and Mrs Lim in 1953, making it 64 years old this year. A former military canteen, this colonial bar was originally located on Jalan Hang Jebat. It was, however, moved to its current location due to the construction of a flyover, and hence is no longer the original bar but a recreation by both owners and fans. The rustic eatery hasn’t changed its menu much since establishment, with local eats and Hainanese-styled British food. So take a walk down Singapore’s heritage lane and check them out!

ENAQ Restaurant

What’s that? You have a craving for ab-so-lute-ly awesome Prata? Well, hold onto that hunger just a little longer to make the drive all the way to Jurong West for some Enaq Prata! As a self-proclaimed Prata Connoisseur, I profess to favour crispy prata over the softer prata. There’s just no comparison between the two. Between the regular chewy version and the crunchy one, crispy prata wins hands down. And this is one of the rare places to get said crispy prata! There’s another outlet in Ghim Moh now, which caters to the hipster crowd unlike the original mamak stall style, so if you want to get your #Instastories, hop on over there instead.

Find it at 303 Jurong East Street 32, Singapore (600303) or 21 Ghim Moh Rd, Singapore (270021)

Chong Wen Ge Cafe

Have I come to the wrong place? This is a temple…or is it? Chong Wen Ge is a Peranakan cafe hidden in plain sight! Sharing the same tiling as Thian Hock Keng Temple (just next door), it definitely blends in well with the traditional look. Blink, and you’ll miss it. Serving up piping hot local favourites like Nyonya laksa and Nyonya Mee Siam (Nyonya also referring to Peranakan), this camouflaged spot is certainly worth squinting for!

Bincho Chicken HeartsBincho Yakitori Don
Bincho

Despite its disguise as a heritage shop in Tiong Bahru, this classy gastrobar is no kopitiam stall. You’ll have to creep through the back lanes of Moh Guan Terrace alley, spot the entirely metallic door with the tiny Bincho lettering, and then watch as the world transforms around you as you walk through. Do try the custom cocktails and specialty yakitori, for they are sure to blow your mind.

Shrimp Garlic Noodles_LowMongolian Beef_Low
The Dragon Chamber

While speakeasies are not uncommon in Singapore, they’re not usually Chinese. A large group of them are admittedly Japanese or Western concoctions, so I have to say that there was a little me squealing in excitement when I learned of this secret “speakeasy dining experience” by Tunglok. Head to Lokkee, a restaurant also under the Tunglok group, and ask to enter the Dragon Chamber. You’ll be lead to a red door through which you’ll enter this secret bar. There’s a secret menu that boasts exotic dishes. I won’t ruin the surprise, but do check out the Dragon Claw dish there—it’s proof that Chinese do eat everything!

In keeping with the speakeasy style, The Dragon Chamber does not have an official page, so you’ll only be able to access its front restaurant, Lokkee’s, website.

Guac & Go

This trendily named restaurant doles out healthy and yummy salad/grain bowls in generous helpings. Started by two avocado lovers, it claims to serve the “best guacamole bowls in the CBD” and seems to be living up to this promise. Be sure to look hard for them, as they’re hidden behind Maxwell Chambers. This hipsterific place has seasonal menus that keep customers on their toes and absolutely instagrammable desserts. Lau Wang Claypot Delights

I navigated the narrow streets of Serangoon to this back-end alley corner coffee shop just to satiate my desire for clay pot. Perhaps we should remove “just”, for a craving is certainly no small deal! And I definitely got my wish at Lau Wang Claypot Delights, for a very reasonable price. This humble family-style kopitiam has been around since 1985, which only goes to show that they’ve been doing things right. So if you ever crave clay pot dishes, do take a short trip to Serangoon!

Green and Good: Vegetarian Eats

As a meatatarian, I’ve always wondered if the grass is greener on the other side. After all, avoiding an entire portion of the food pyramid has always seemed very much like limiting your choices. And indeed, when I undertook a mission to look for good, green food for Vegan Month, it definitely took some serious (soul) searching.

Perhaps meat and I are never meant to part, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for alternatives. The same goes for everyone, be it pure vegan, vegetarian, or even just a regular omnivore feeling peckish for some green food. The road to healthy greens is long, but those embarking on the journey can check out these nine vegetarian-friendly restaurants to get a good dose of healthy eating.

Restaurant Ards

This new Asian fine-dining establishment is located along Duxton Road and helmed by a mighty pair of chef-owners Ace Tan and David Lee with a mission to celebrate Asia’s rich variety of culinary cultures and exquisite techniques with the world. Their vision is to bring nature to the table, which means the freshest of ingredients. Of course, this includes all things green!

As a vegetarian-friendly restaurant, there is a special 15-course vegetarian dinner apart from their normal dishes which you have to book 2 days in advance for! (Trust me, it’s worth it.) With dishes named Touch of Asia and The Art of Roots, you’ll definitely be in for a treat.

Find it at 76 Duxton Road, Singapore (089535)

Cafe Salivation

If the name doesn’t make you drool, it just means you haven’t been there. This casual dining place has found the secret to drool-worthy healthy food that keeps customers coming back for more. The most amazing part? It is completely, 100% vegetarian.

With bright and bold aesthetics and an equally disarming mix of Mexican, Asian, and Italian cuisines available on the menu, Cafe Salivation does not disappoint. The Enchiladas Remo or Desi Sandwich will surely have you hooked!

Find it at 176 Race Course Road, Singapore (218607)

Open Farm Community

A unique combination of urban farmland, horticultural hub, and restaurant, this concept is a revolutionary collaboration between the Spa Espirit Group, celebrity chef Ryan Clift, and award-winning food garden specialists, Edible Garden City. The food here is a fresh as you can get, and you can admire the sprawling gardens as you tuck in. There’s a strict no-no policy towards processed ingredients, imported produced, and unsustainable farming practices which means that everything is locally-sourced and, I repeat, absolutely fresh!

While Open Farm Community isn’t 100% vegefied, there are more than enough vegetarian dishes to satisfy the most discerning of palates! (And if you’re like me and have lesser willpower, take a stab at some of the meat dishes too. Shhh.)

Real Food

What does it mean to eat real food? This popular cafe-bistro demonstrates with plate after plate of juicy burgers, hearty stews, and rich pastas. Take the idea that vegetarian = salad and throw it out the window right now! This place turned my belief in the deliciousness of meat upside down. Turns out, you don’t need to eat meat to have a delicious and satisfying meal. Hands-down, this is now at the top of my list for luncheons. But don’t leave just yet! Take a sip at their wonderful selection of aromatic teas and tisanes. After such a heartening meal, a hot cup of Listen to Your Heart tea sounds heavenly.

Find it at 44,45 Pekin Street, #01-01, Far East Square, Singapore (189768)

It’s been here serving locals since 1997 – that’s 20 years of constantly perfecting an already exquisite menu right there! Mediterranean, Greek, Italian, and Middle Eastern tastes converge at this famous hot spot. There are both indoor and al fresco dining here. If you didn’t know, you an also save 10% at Original Sin when you purchase vouchers from the Chope Shop!

Afterglow

Since we’re talking about vegetarianism, why not push the boundaries a little and go vegan? And with the impressively innovative dishes at Afterglow, they’ll have you forgetting that you’re tucking into cuisines that are meat-free and void of any animal by-products. You really need to applaud their creativity, and boy do those efforts pay off. What to try: Raw Vegan Nut ‘Cheese’ Platter with Crackers and Afterglow Kimchi Nori Rolls (psst, the rice is not rice). Fans of desserts need not fret either because their Raw Chocolate Salted Caramel Fudge is 100% indulgence with 0% guilt.

While it may not be completely vegefied, there’s absolutely no reason for true blue vegetarians to avoid it. There are more than enough selections for you to choose from, and you’ll definitely have more than just a salad.

Oh, but grab their special Chope Exclusive lunch set now! For the entire month of October, you get a complimentary bowl with every lunch set purchase. Make a reservation with us and use promo code CE10KC to get it! (And yes, there’s a vegetarian bowl: the Coco Cashew Pomelo Quinoa grain bowl)

ODP is always looking to improve their menu to provide healthier meals to its guests, without sacrificing taste. From the taste of their Signature Fluffy Souffle (acai berry créme anglaise), it’s a definite rousing success.

Fresh Eats: Spying on Chope’s September Picks

How was your August? Probably busy. Busy shopping that is! With GSS coming together with National Day, many of us were definitely hoping to catch some last-last-minute discounts. Now that our recyclable bags are full (#savetheearth), we’ve tracked down some bars and cafes to kick back and chill!

Propeller.jpg

Propeller

Want to feel on top of the world? Re-energize yourself with a gorgeous evening view of Keppel Harbour and Sentosa. Propeller is the first rooftop bar at Harbourfront, and specialises in concocting creative cocktails. It’s tough to pick a favourite from their selection of delicious tipples, but if we had to choose, The Propeller Bay – a delicious mix of vodka, orange juice, raspberry syrup, and thyme – would be it. The homemade lime espuma topping can be torched for extra zest and is the perfect touch to propel our spirits to greater heights.

Of course, great drinks must be paired with great tapas! The bar offers a mighty combination of modern inventions, like the incredibly indulgent Pan-seared Scallops with Citrus Fennel Salad or the Seared Beef Cubes with Truffle Mayonnaise. Of course, that’s not all: if you’re lucky, you can watch the Sentosa Boardwalk fireworks from Propeller’s plush sofas. (Pro tip: it’s at 8pm.)

(Don’t we all wish that our family had heirloom recipe books too?!) With dishes like Lawar Salad, Lontong, and Lemak Noodles, we’re head over heels for the lineup of heritage eats on the menu! The restaurant is currently pending its Halal certification, post-MUIS audit, so all Muslim friends are welcome too!

There’s a whole range of healthy yet scrumptious food choices to choose from, such as towering burgers served with a side of fat chips, to HUGE (I’m not kidding here) bowls of fresh salads. We recommend opting for the Big Betelnut Salad, a bad**s that boasts a combination of four of their special salads – the best of both worlds, amirite?

Corner House

Located in a cozy, two-storey bungalow at the end of Jalan Kayu Aya in Seminyak, Corner House has the perfect environment to while away a lazy afternoon with delicious grub and quality brews. The menu at this all-day diner is quite comprehensive, featuring breakfast, lunch, dinner, and happy hour menus (plus a wide range of apéritifs).

Pssst, though the Corn Fritter Stack might not sound that appealing, it is to-die-for and it’s one dish we can’t stop raving about. Similar to vegetable fritters, these tasty delights are fried to perfection – crisp on the outside yet moist on the inside. The fritters are then layered with halloumi and stewed tomatoes before being topped with a perfectly poached egg. UH-may-zinggg.
