Bali’s top 30 for the holiday season!

Eng | Bahasa

It’s that time of the year again! Like they say, “A little bit of summer is what the whole year’s all about”, and this time, summer coincides with the Muslim religious holiday, Eid-al-Fitr. Since this is a festival that most of Indonesia celebrate, holiday-hotspot Bali will surely be buzzing with tourists from all over — expect some places to be packed like sardines! To prepare yourself, book the best restaurants beforehand so you won’t go home on an empty stomach. Here are some great places to celebrate the holiday season!

Ubud

Kemiri Restaurant (COMO Uma Ubud)

Welcome to the land of yoga and wellness. Take a stroll through Campuhan Ridge Walk, enjoy the lush scenery, and unplug for a bit. Afterwards, you can have an authentic Indonesian lunch at Hujan Locale, Kemiri, Nomad, or The Restaurant at the Chedi Club Tanah Gajah.

It’s time for some Bali-exploration! Be captivated by a kecak dance performance or visit the cheeky Ubud Monkey Forest for the ultimate Bali experience! After that, drop by the Habitat Cafe for a healthy and refreshing meal. But, if you feel like lazing the day away, sink into cool waters and watch the time fly by at Folk, or better yet! Enjoy stunning Ubud alongside Bali’s acclaimed sunset at Sayan House. Reservations are essential but fret not, we’ve got your back. Book your dinner at the best of Ubud — BLANCO par Mandif, Kubu at Mandapa, Pica, and bridges will be your best bets.

Seminyak

Mrs. Sippy Bali

Oh my, we seriously don’t know where to start. Seminyak is such a fun area to explore! Experience the largest saltwater pool at Mrs. Sippy, grab a quick bite at Bo & Bun, or put on your sunnies and sip on a cold rosé while enjoying a delightful meal at Ijen, whereby zero wastage is promoted to lower carbon footprint. Wander around Jl. Kayu Aya and pick your favourites from a treasure trove — from traditional handmade souvenirs to designer boutiques, you name it, this street has it. You won’t be lacking dinner options here in Seminyak with Mamasan, Sarong, Da Maria, and Barbacoa being definite favourites. When you’ve had your fill, dance the night away at La Favela, but don’t forget to snap some shots at the cute photobox on the second floor!

Canggu

From_the_Land_Tongseng_Kambing_1554128131
SVÁ Indonesian Tapas & Bar

If Seminyak and Ubud were to have a child, Canggu would be their baby. Start your day right by joining a barre class or relax through sunrise flow yoga at Fitspot Bali. Then, move on to indulge in great food at all-time favourite cafe Milk & Madu at Jl. Pantai Berawa, or enjoy a caffeine boost amidst ravishing rice fields at Cinta Cafe. Another must do is renting a motorbike and visiting the bustling local flea market around Batu Bolong area — like they say, reuse and recycle! Spend the rest of your afternoon lounging and watching the sunset from the beautiful La Brisa, surf at Echo Beach, or lay back and relax at the sophisticated COMO beach club. Spoil your taste buds with an exotic twist on traditional Indonesian flavour at SVÁ Indonesian Tapas & Bar. If Japanese is your thing, modern restaurants Musubi and Ji are some of the eateries we take delight in.

Chill at Common Man Stan over satisfying nosh and brilliant drinks

Need to catch a mid-day break or a place to recuperate after the daily grind? Head down to Common Man Stan for a comfortable respite in the CBD. Decked out in minimalistic modern-chic interiors with a clean and inviting vibe, stepping into this cafe strips away your worries almost instantaneously.

The dishes at Common Man Stan isn’t complicated either: while their breakfast and lunch menus see the usual cafe selections, the dinner menu delves into a more gratifying lineup. If you didn’t know about Common Man Stan’s dinner offerings, here’s a sneak peek to let you in on the 411.

The Shining Starter: Tofu Sisig

00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180717194751819_COVER
Traditionally made with chopped up pork bits, crisp from the sizzling hot plate it’s served in, sisig is a popular pork-based dish from the Philippines. However, Common Man Stan serves Tofu Sisig instead. The fried tofu is perfect for soaking up all that tangy dressing, while the tortilla chips make for the best vessel to transport those tasty morsels of tofu into your mouth. Appetising and packed with flavour, we can’t think of a better way to kickstart a meal.

Magnificent Mains: Pork Belly Cha Shu & Herb Crusted Chicken Schnitzel

Pork Belly Cha Siu
Once you’re done with your appetiser, say hello to the indulgent Pork Belly Cha Shu. Marvellously fatty (read: delicious) pork belly is cooked until it’s fork-tender and served with umami Tonkotsu sauce and a side of truffled kangkong . The flavours are robust and fulfilling, and the pumpkin puree helps to cut through the pork fat with its mellow sweetness.

Herb Crusted Chicken Schnitzel
Whether you’re packing an appetite or sharing a meal, the Herb Crusted Chicken Schnitzel is your go to. Crisp yet tender and overall satisfying, you can’t go wrong with this plate of comfort! The herbed crust help zhoosh up the cutlets, and a squirt of lemon brightens up the flavours too. To cleanse the palate, the celeriac & radish remoulade works wonders.

A Delightful Dessert: Churros with Caramel or Chocolate Sauce

00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180717210951945_COVER00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180717193310420_COVER
Where good coffee is abundant, one does not get simply end a meal without ordering a plate of Churros. These golden twiglets are dusted with cinnamon sugar and served with a side of caramel or chocolate sauce. Pair that with a side of warm coffee and you’re all set for the night! Need a little pick me up? We recommend swapping the java for the CMCR Hot Chocolate with Grounded Pleasures Artisanal Chocolate (trust us on this one).

From fulfilling cafe fare in the day to generous dinner selections to end the night, you can always count on trusty ol’ Common Man Stan to bring you the best of both meals.

Club Street Social’s Lunch Menu Gets Our Stamp of Approval

Club Street Social is known for being a great place to relax, soak up Singapore’s nightlife, and…have an excellent lunch? No really, how did we overlook the fact that this popular bar transforms from classy, glamorous joint at night to vintage cafe in the day. To remedy this error, we joined the crowds from Chinatown and Telok Ayer, and hopped on down to give their delicious and healthy lunch fare a go. (Spoiler: We liked it.)

IMG_0206

Appetiser: Beetroot and Burrata Salad

Even if you’re not a huge fan of salads, you have to try the Beetroot & Burrata Salad. All its elements are deliberately chosen to complement each other, making this much better than the usual bowl of assorted veggies, toppings, and a drizzle of dressing.

Chunks of beetroot, sweet slices of orange, and fragrant hazelnuts sit atop a bed of fluffy quinoa. The entire bowl is topped with a generous knob of creamy burrata cheese and given an addictive finish of nutty, browned butter, making it just sinful enough to be immensely satisfying. We had to force ourselves to stop eating to save space for other dishes (but I couldn’t stop nibbling on the burrata cheese!). Plus, don’t get us started on its visual appeal.

IMG_0212.jpg

Quinoa dyed beetroot pink, eye-catching orange slices, milky-white cheese, and a tinge of vibrant green coriander makes this a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. The whole salad is a gorgeous mix of colours, flavours, and textures that combine to make each bite even better than the last.

IMG_0208.jpg

Sharing Snacks: Saffron Risotto Balls

Fried to golden-brown perfection, the Saffron Risotto Balls are a decadent and tempting treat. When you bite into them, the initial satisfying crunch melts into a pillow-soft mouthful of rich, saffron-infused rice.

IMG_9582 (1).gif

But our favourite bit was the surprise in the middle: a core of stretchy, melty, delicious cheese. These nibbles are served with Club Street Social’s very own smoky tomato sauce; its charred, tangy flavours enhance the sweet and slightly pungent saffron.

IMG_0215.jpg

Sandwich: Chicken Panini

For those bemoaning the lack of grab-and-go or eat-at-my-desk options, don’t speak too soon! We ordered the Chicken Panini and it was hands down our favourite dish of the day. Slices of sous vide chicken breast, sweet Roma tomatoes, earthy coriander pesto are sandwiched between slices of crunchy, light, toasted ciabatta, creating a marvellously comforting panini that showcases the beauty of simplicity.

You can tell that the panini is carefully prepared to bring out the best in the each and every ingredient. Thanks to the sous vide cooking, the chicken breast is tender and moist. The fresh tomatoes are sweet and balanced by the mellow taste of the coriander pesto. We’re ashamed to say that we spent too much time taking photos and didn’t get around to eating the panini until much later, but amazingly the bread didn’t get soggy at all and still retained a hearty bite without being overly chewy.

Overall, the Chicken Panini is everything a sandwich should be. It’s simple and comforting, with fresh ingredients which all go perfectly together to give you mouthfuls of pure bliss.

IMG_0220.jpg

Main Course: Farro Risotto

The first thing we noticed about this dish was its unique presentation: rice coated in a vibrant green sauce and garnished with a sprinkle of fried spinach. If you’re a fan of goat’s cheese, you’ll go crazy for the Farro Risotto, which is topped with generous slices of seared goat’s cheese that’s just barely starting to melt. Made with farro instead of the usual Arborio rice, the risotto has a pleasant bite, somewhat like brown rice, that sets it apart from its softer cousins. Its beautiful green sauce is made from spinach; though it’s a little plain on its own, the goat’s cheese really lifts the sauce and brings out the veggie’s light fragrance.

Grab a lunch set!

Your appetite might love the sound of lunch at the fabulously chic Club Street, but we understand if your bank account is a tad hesitant. Never fear; you’ll be able to solve the age-old dilemma of wallet vs stomach with Club Street Social’s lunch set. Order any main you like, and top up just $5 to add on a soup or salad of the day, plus a dessert and cup of coffee or tea.

Ceviche

This dish of fish and citrus is popular throughout Latin America, but is best known as the national dish of Peru. Fresh, raw fish marinated in a mix of citrus and pepper, and served with corn and sweet potato makes this dish both refreshing and interesting. There aren’t a lot of places to get Peruvian cuisine in Singapore, so Tiger’s Milk [closed] is a notable spot. Named after the citrus, salt and fish sauce mix used to flavour Ceviche, this rooftop bar serves up three varieties of the dish using several types of seafood, a must-try if you’re starting on your Ceviche journey.

Top 10 Pocket-friendly Restaurants in Bali

Bali’s well-known for its stunning beaches and exotic cuisine, Indo dishes, and believe it or not, there are countless places to splurge on a hearty feast without shelling out a small fortune. We’ve taken the liberty of compiling a quick guide to 10 restaurants, so you can eat your way across this beach paradise on a budget. It includes a variety of cuisines, from authentic Indonesian to Western fusion—whatever your pick, we guarantee both your appetite and your wallet will leave satisfied.

cs1.jpgcs2.jpg

Spice by Chris Salans

If you’re looking for solid, unpretentious Indonesian food in a hip setting, Spice is the place to go. This gastro-bar, helmed by acclaimed chef Chris Salans, has three classy but comfortable locations spread across three destinations: Ubud, Sanur, and Seminyak. The menu is divvied up into sections like “Seafood”, “Raw”, and “Sliders”, and standouts include the indulgent Crispy Pork Belly given an update with turmeric dressing and dukkah spice or Tuna Tataki with sambal kecicang and tempe crackers. The cuisine here is infused with Western influences, so it’s no surprise that the affordable sliders (with ingredients like papaya, sambal hijau, and wakame bread) are absolutely scrumptious. Wash it all down with a milkshake or signature cocktail—Salans’ tipples only use fresh fruits and local spices. Pro-tip: give the Jackfruit Bourbon Cocktail a spin!

Find it at Jalan Raya Ubud No. 23, Ubud, Bali 80571; Jalan Danau Tamblingan No. 140, Sanur, Bali 80228; or Jalan Batu Belig No.7, Kerobokan, Seminyak, Bali 80361

Grain

Grain’s affordable menu belies the effort put into it: from locally-sourced produce, pies baked in-house, to a unique blend of 100% Arabica beans. You can find classic Indo dishes here too, but the All Day Breakfast and Western dishes are where it’s at. Go for a Bali Benedict or the luxurious Breakfast Board, which offers an assortment of components like marinated feta and sourdough rosti for a steal. For something heartier, you can’t go wrong with a Pulled Pork Burger showcasing slow-roasted pork with homemade apple sauce. Pair it with a cup of coffee and while away a lazy afternoon in Seminyak. The art-adorned walls, matching cushions, and industrial vibe make for a beautifully Instagrammable interior, too.

When an entire section of a restaurant’s menu is dedicated to comfort food, you know they’re serious about it. This casual eatery, with its homely interior and downright good food, is hidden away near Oberoi and Kerobokan streets. Scratch is devoted to serving up rustic pasta and meaty mains that are easy on the wallet—most dishes are priced below IDR 120,000! Each plate is an explosion of flavours, and we love the Scratchatouille, a roasted crispy skin chicken on a ratatouille comprising ten vegetables and five herbs, garnished with gorgonzola and toasted almond olive oil. Other favourites are the Philly Cheese Steak Poutine and slow-cooked Baby Back Pork Ribs in two styles, whether you’re craving eastern or western flavours. Salivating yet? The menu at this all-day diner is quite comprehensive, featuring breakfast, lunch, dinner, and happy hour menus (plus a wide range of apéritifs).

Fresh Eats: 9 New Restaurants To Check Out This August

It’s August, and we’re welcoming a brand new month with 9 new restaurants, hot off the press! From heritage cuisine reflecting Singapore’s multicultural heritage to bespoke cocktails infused with Asian herbs and spices, this month’s gonna be an egg-citing one!

COMO Cuisine Lamb Kofta.jpgCOMO Cuisine Our Big Raw Salad.jpg

COMO Cuisine

Part of the complex under Singapore luxury hotel group COMO Dempsey, COMO Cuisine is a new restaurant concept presenting signature cuisines from COMO Hotels and Resorts properties around the world. Boasting a clean, elegant, and relaxed ambience, the space is designed by world-renowned architect and designer, Paola Navone, and reflects the essence of COMO Cuisine’s offerings.

Here, you’ll get exposed to a myriad of contemporary flavours. The restaurant’s menu brings a light touch to the big flavours of the region, reflecting Singapore’s heritage as a culinary melting pot. Generous in flavour and quality, the refined and modern fare amalgamates ingredients and techniques from different regions to produce something new and unexpected.

After a hearty meal at COMO Cuisine, head over to the other stores located in the same compound – indulge in retail therapy at world-renowned retail concept store Dover Street Market or down some after meal tipples at The Dempsey Cookhouse & Bar, opened by acclaimed Michelin chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten.

provisions1.jpgbeef sirloin skewers.jpg

Provisions

Also located in the hip and trendy Dempsey enclave is Provisions, a 1,600 sq ft space serving up comfort food on skewers, claypot rice, and bespoke Asian-inspired cocktails. Set in an industrial-chic space with high metal chairs, wooden fixtures, and low-hanging warm fluorescent bulbs, the ambience here will remind you of the charms of yesteryear.

Provisions is an ideal dining destination for groups as communal dining is encouraged here; it was his love for bonding with family and friends over food that sparked Singaporean Chef/ Owner Justin Foo to open this place.

While they serve humble, local dishes, the chefs at Provisions are certainly not taking their craft lightly. A great amount of emphasis is placed on the origins and quality of the ingredients, with a majority hailing from the Southeast Asian region. Menu highlights include the Seafood Rice and a decadent Oyster & Uni Rice, which brings to the table two of the most amazing and rich flavours of the sea. Finally, finish your meal with tipples from their well-tended cocktail bar; the inventive cocktails are tailored to your tastes and preferences, and infuse a blend of Asian herbs and spices.

TEA-se Me with the Ultimate Springtime Indulgence: Hong Kong’s Best Afternoon Teas

Ladies, did you know that the origins of afternoon tea harkens back to Anna Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford? Back in those days, the Duchess was only served two meals each day—once in the morning for breakfast, and once in the evening for dinner. Overcome by never-ending hunger pangs, Anna decided to schedule a time each afternoon for a quick repast. Thus the afternoon tea was born, which rose to popularity first in London’s top hotels and was gradually embraced by Britain’s outposts worldwide.

Now you can enjoy this popular British pastime at an eclectic array of Hong Kong’s restaurants, from the posh digs of Clipper Lounge to the Nordic-inspired afternoon tea at FINDS. Pinkies at the ready? Let’s go!

Be sure to smother that jam on literally every morsel, ‘cause it’s that good. Trust us. Post-indulgence, imbibe from their extensive tea menu, offering the highest quality of teas. Above & Beyond: Asian Afternoon Tea

There’s more to the eye at Above & Beyond. Sure, the breathtaking views of Victoria Harbour 28 stories up are truly postcard-worthy. But what sets them ‘above & beyond’  amongst the inundation of afternoon tea choices in HK, has to be—cue the drumroll—dim sum. Yup! Sweet and savoury Cantonese plates are all present here: Sweetened Almond Cream with Lotus Seeds and Lily Bulbs, Pork Dumpling with Halibut and Black Mushroom, and Mushroom Dumpling with Pumpkin. Yum. So what’s better than dim sum? Desserts of course. Above & Beyond’s dessert selections are a bit of French-Asian fusion. Savour the Chilled Jelly with Lychee and Osmanthus (the lychee flavours are deliciously concentrated) as well as the Chestnut Crème Brûlée: a perfect dénouement, with its crunchy and custardy flavours melded to a buttery puff pastry base. Soar to new heights beyond our day-to-day afternoon tea haunts.
