Bali’s top 30 for the holiday season!

Eng | Bahasa

It’s that time of the year again! Like they say, “A little bit of summer is what the whole year’s all about”, and this time, summer coincides with the Muslim religious holiday, Eid-al-Fitr. Since this is a festival that most of Indonesia celebrate, holiday-hotspot Bali will surely be buzzing with tourists from all over — expect some places to be packed like sardines! To prepare yourself, book the best restaurants beforehand so you won’t go home on an empty stomach. Here are some great places to celebrate the holiday season!

Ubud

Kemiri Restaurant (COMO Uma Ubud)

Welcome to the land of yoga and wellness. Take a stroll through Campuhan Ridge Walk, enjoy the lush scenery, and unplug for a bit. Afterwards, you can have an authentic Indonesian lunch at Hujan Locale, Kemiri, Nomad, or The Restaurant at the Chedi Club Tanah Gajah.

It’s time for some Bali-exploration! Be captivated by a kecak dance performance or visit the cheeky Ubud Monkey Forest for the ultimate Bali experience! After that, drop by the Habitat Cafe for a healthy and refreshing meal. But, if you feel like lazing the day away, sink into cool waters and watch the time fly by at Folk, or better yet! Enjoy stunning Ubud alongside Bali’s acclaimed sunset at Sayan House. Reservations are essential but fret not, we’ve got your back. Book your dinner at the best of Ubud — BLANCO par Mandif, Kubu at Mandapa, Pica, and bridges will be your best bets.

Seminyak

Mrs. Sippy Bali

Oh my, we seriously don’t know where to start. Seminyak is such a fun area to explore! Experience the largest saltwater pool at Mrs. Sippy, grab a quick bite at Bo & Bun, or put on your sunnies and sip on a cold rosé while enjoying a delightful meal at Ijen, whereby zero wastage is promoted to lower carbon footprint. Wander around Jl. Kayu Aya and pick your favourites from a treasure trove — from traditional handmade souvenirs to designer boutiques, you name it, this street has it. You won’t be lacking dinner options here in Seminyak with Mamasan, Sarong, Da Maria, and Barbacoa being definite favourites. When you’ve had your fill, dance the night away at La Favela, but don’t forget to snap some shots at the cute photobox on the second floor!

Canggu

From_the_Land_Tongseng_Kambing_1554128131
SVÁ Indonesian Tapas & Bar

If Seminyak and Ubud were to have a child, Canggu would be their baby. Start your day right by joining a barre class or relax through sunrise flow yoga at Fitspot Bali. Then, move on to indulge in great food at all-time favourite cafe Milk & Madu at Jl. Pantai Berawa, or enjoy a caffeine boost amidst ravishing rice fields at Cinta Cafe. Another must do is renting a motorbike and visiting the bustling local flea market around Batu Bolong area — like they say, reuse and recycle! Spend the rest of your afternoon lounging and watching the sunset from the beautiful La Brisa, surf at Echo Beach, or lay back and relax at the sophisticated COMO beach club. Spoil your taste buds with an exotic twist on traditional Indonesian flavour at SVÁ Indonesian Tapas & Bar. If Japanese is your thing, modern restaurants Musubi and Ji are some of the eateries we take delight in.

Taste the King of all Lobsters at Rech by Alan Ducasse

Eng |

The blue lobster is perhaps the king of all lobsters, fresher and sweeter than the rest. Get a bite of these sensational crustaceans at Rech by Alain Ducasse, which has series of new menus featuring the seasonal French blue lobsters. You can taste the fruits of the sea from southern France without having to leave Hong Kong!

We love the Crazy Blue Lobster Menu (available now till 31 August). How could you resist the Decadent Lobster Soufflé for two? The traditional French dish has generous chunks of lobster meat and a rich lobster broth, made with fresh blue lobsters shipped daily from Brittany. It’s not every day you see this dish in Hong Kong, much less one of such fantastic quality, so make sure you don’t miss it!

DSCF0723_1

Before starting on the Soufflé, create a hole in the centre and pour in the lobster broth, which fills the souffle with a rich, creamy flavour. You’ll also find plenty of delicious lobster meat at the bottom of the dish.

Another great dish is the Blue Lobster and Courgette Flowers-Taggiasca Olives from the signature menu. A generous serving of grilled blue lobster sits on a bed of mashed zucchini.

DSCF0700_1

The grilled blue lobster is served with grilled and mashed Violin Zucchini, a special French variety which grows only in Provence during the summer. The zucchini skins are stuffed with the lobster and mashed zucchini, along with olives, ginger, basil, and deep-fried zucchini flowers. Finally, a dash of olive powder enhance the flavours and brings the dish together.

【米芝蓮餐廳夏日限定  來自法國南部的藍龍蝦盛宴】

Eng |

8 Local-Inspired Meals to Feed the Singaporean in You!

Celebrate National Day in a truly Singaporean way: by eating! There’s nothing that brings the country together like our unique food, so loosen your belt and showcase your Singaporean appetite with these meals that capture what we love most about Singapore.

1. Urbana Rooftop Bar

Urbana Rooftop Bar ViewUrbana Rooftop Bar Cocktails

Have a bit of fun this National Day and treat yourself to some tipples and bar bites at Urbana Rooftop Bar. Boasting fine wines, signature cocktails, and a beautiful view that stretches all the way to Marina Bay, it’s a great place for a patriotic party. Your favourite hawker center supper of satay and Milo gets a boozy, classy upgrade here too!

The signature Pork and Pineapple Satay is everything we look for in a satay and more. Chunks of tender, juicy pork melt satisfyingly away from the stick, carrying hints of smoky char, while the pineapple provides bursts of sweetness. It also goes perfectly with the Chocoloco, a smooth, creamy, chocolatey cocktail. Made with Baileys, chocolate syrup, and vodka then topped with Milo powder, it’s inspired by none other than our childhood favourite Milo Dinosaur.

2. Sky22Sky22 Tiger Prawn Laksa LemakSky22 Singapore Chilli Crab Pizza

Well, maybe satay and cocktails aren’t quite enough for a properly filling dinner. In that case, you can always count on Sky22, with its menu of Singaporean foods made indulgent with premium ingredients, for a hearty meal of local favourites. It’s in the same building as Urbana Rooftop Bar too, so you can always head upstairs for post-dinner drinks and a spot of supper!

Make sure you’re prepared for some heat, because both their signature items pack quite a punch! Slurp up a generous bowl of Tiger Prawn Laksa Lemak, topped with quail eggs, fishcakes, and huge, sweet tiger prawns. The coconut gravy is a masterpiece, balancing the spiciness with its creamy texture and fragrance. And of course, the Chilli Crab Pizza, with generous chunks of crab and lots of chilli, is far too tempting to resist.

The Atlantic Lobster & Prawn Ravioli, with its laksa leaf and chilli, looks a lot like an Italian rendition of laksa. As for meats, there’s a Beef Short Rib Rendang to quell those curry cravings. Finally, dessert comes in the form of Kaya Toast, featuring kaya-flavoured panna cotta, toasted brioche, and pandan cream. Are you drooling yet? We sure are!

Conrad Lobby Lounge’s 1-for-1 Weekend High Tea is a seafood lover’s heaven

Buffet high teas are somewhat of a common ritual here in Singapore but when we heard of Conrad Lobby Lounge‘s new 4-course Weekend High Tea offering, we can’t help but pop by to experience it ourselves.

background_LLbar
Tear away from the hustle and bustle of the city and feel your worries melt away as you step into the lounge. The warm wood panellings and comfortable lounge chairs beckon you to relax and unwind, while the waiting staff tend to your needs. A typical high tea starts off light and simple but at Conrad, you know you’ll be pampered through and through.

28122518-SeafoodPlatter_resized_2000x1500
An indulgent beginning comes in the form of a refreshing Seafood Platter that features a trio of lobster, prawns, and oysters. A squirt of lime and a dash of hot sauce add a touch of brightness to the fresh ocean catch, whetting your appetite for more. While tucking into poached Boston lobster with brilliantly plump prawns, and slurping down luscious Irish oysters, we thought: can it get any better than this?

Oh yes, yes it can.

262_ Conrad june 2018
The second course presented itself as a myriad of savoury delights and sweet treats. From House Cured Salmon to Orange Curd, Fresh Thyme Flower and Ivory Chocolate Mousse, tiers upon tiers of high tea selections were brought to the table. Feast your eyes on the lobby lounge’s extensive catalogue of Ronnefeldt teas as well, where you can take your pick from calming classics to unique concoctions such as the Orange Pekoe tea.

We delighted in their Baked Mango and Passionfruit Lava and wished we could devour endless servings of their Heirloom Tomato and Marinated Mozzarella TartletsEating your way down the tiers, greet the fresh strawberries and classic chantilly cream at the end to finish off on a sweet note.

Don’t just take our word for it – explore them yourselves and find your favourite out of the list of treats on the menu!

264_ Conrad june 2018
Wrap up the tiered treats with a serving of Conrad’s popular Warm Scones, served alongside mini pots of homemade fig, strawberry jam, and clotted cream. Smear clotted cream onto the warm scones, and have it together with your jam of choice. If there was a way to turn satisfaction into flavour, this comes really close.

On the other hand, get in touch with your swish side when you tuck into their Cheeseboard that offers Brie, Chaume, and Tomme de Savoie alongside a smorgasbord of crackers and dried fruits.

Still unconvinced? Here’s a Chope insider’s tip: Conrad’s throwing in a sweet deal this month with Chope Exclusives! Enjoy a 1-for-1 Weekend High Tea from $68++ at the Lobby Lounge when you make a reservation with the promo code CE8LL*.

And when we say American-style, we mean it in every possible way, right down to their portion sizes. For example, there’s nothing “little” about the enormous Empire Burger that stands at almost a head tall.

Little Diner’s Empire Burger ($55++) is a sandwich loaded with 3 beef patties, bacon, a good mix of swiss and cheddar cheese, caramelised onions, plenty of lettuce and tomatoes, pickles, and a fried egg, with a side of thick-cut fries and house salad. Whew, that was a mouthful. It’s good for a group of 3 to 4 people, but you can take up the Empire Burger Challenge. If you manage to finish the entire thing in 20 minutes, you’ll earn mad props and a free meal. If you can’t finish it within the time limit, you’ll have to pay for the burger. On the bright side, the good folks at Little Diner will throw in a free dessert. That is if you can still stomach dessert.

6. Peperoni Pizzeria

If you a-dough pizza as much as we do, how about ordering an XXL 21” pie from Peperoni Pizzeria? Enough to feed 4-6 people, it’s perfect for a small party or family get-together. Make sure you’ve got lots of space in your car though, because the pizza box is so huge that it doesn’t fit on a standard delivery man’s motorcycle, so you’ll have to pick it up yourself.

Choose from options like the tried and tested Classico flavours, or treat yourself to something more premium with the Speciale flavours. Can’t decide? Do the half-and-half or follow your stomach and order two serparate XXLs instead.

7. Roadhouse

Terminator Burger

Roadhouse is a casual diner that prides itself on serving all-American classics: milkshakes and customisable burgers. It’s also home to the 1 kg Terminator Burger Challenge that’s almost as intimidating as Arnold Schwarzenegger himself. The burger has 6 beef patties, grilled in a mighty Josper grill to seal in the juices and impart a nice, smoky sear. The stack also includes cheese, streaky bacon, jalapeños, and coleslaw, all between homemade sesame buns. Finish this tasty burger within 20 minutes – the sea of fries included – and it’s free. Plus, you’ll earn eternal glory on the Roadhouse Wall of Fame. Our recommendation: skip breakfast and wear stretchy pants.

Feel like you have little agency in your life? Have no fear, a list of customised food options is here! At these restaurants, you can use your imagination to create dishes that sit well with you. From alcohol to salad bowls to dessert, the motto here is: you do you.

1. Superfudo

The only thing better than a restaurant with healthy options is one that lets you customise your grain bowl down to a T. This Holland Village cafe boasts a range of sous vide meats, a whole bunch of sides, but more importantly, enough different sizes to cater to all. The Petite option ($9) is not only affordable by Singapore grain bowl standards but also filling and delicious.

2. Roadhouse

Pick one of Roadhouse’s 10 burger combis (sign me up for a Mac n’ Cheese burger!) or make your own. Choose a classic beef patty or upgrade to wagyu if you feel like treating yourself. Then pick your extras, like streaky bacon or avocado, next your cheeses, and finally your sauces. If you’re proud of your creation, top it off with an American milkshake. It’s hard not to feel good about something you (kind of) made.

There’s enough on the drinks list to keep you coming, but the bartenders can whip up something according to your palette. 10 View-tiful Places To Dine At Around Singapore

Tired of the same ol’ cafés and restaurants that you frequent? Think that the only best view of Singapore is from the Skypark at Marina Bay Sands? Well, think again. We’ve travelled around our sunny island to put together a list of 10 places to dine at, that all have beautiful views to boot. And to make it easier, we’ve categorised them according to their regions!

North

1. The Summerhouse

Processed with VSCO with c7 presetProcessed with VSCO with c8 preset

Many couples have gotten engaged or recited their vows on the premises of The Summerhouse, and it’s easy to see why. The property is essentially a countryside summer escape that’ll make you forget that you’re in Singapore. To really up the ante of your dining experience, ask for the charming Garden Domes, which provide a magical space for private dinner parties of up to eight diners, or a romantic dinner for two. These fully air-conditioned geodesic domes allow you to wine and dine, in the garden, under the stars, in absolute comfort.

The Summerhouse also has a strong focus on the farm to table experience, and sources ingredients from a farming collective of growers, producers, and kelongs. In fact, the garnishes and herbs that you see on your dinner plate might just be harvested from the in-house edible garden that surrounds the idyllic restaurant.

2. Whisk & Paddle

Whisk & Paddle_View
Cr: whiskandpaddle.com.sg

To be more precise, Whisk & Paddle is located in the North-Eastern part of Singapore, and is situated right next to the Punggol Waterway. It’s probably the closest thing we’ll ever get to a café by the river, but it’s no less scenic. Also, here’s good news for parents with kids or fur-kids: this establishment welcomes both humans and their furry friends.

Besides an all-day breakfast, Whisk & Paddle also offers a myriad of Western dishes like duck confit, fish & chips, pasta, as well as hand-stretched thin crust pizzas, so there’s definitely something here for everyone. If it’s not too hot out, we recommend sitting at the veranda; it’s the perfect place to relish in the tranquil ambience with a cuppa, and also the ideal chillout spot for an ice cold beer in the evenings.

Find it at 10 Tebing Lane, #01-01, Singapore 828836.

For those wondering if that’s the actual view you’ll be getting when you dine at Ocean Restaurant. Yes, it is. After all, Ocean Restaurant’s main attraction is that it is Singapore’s first aquarium dining experience.

As the perfect accompaniment to this experience, Ocean Restaurant serves Mediterranean-Californian cuisine, executed with an Asian flair, that is also informed by Chef Cat Cora’s belief in sustainable seafood. This means that the menu uses local, sustainable seafood produce as well as seafood caught via sustainable methods, which makes the dining experience that much more satisfying.

This entrant probably needs no introduction. One of Singapore’s most recognisable home-grown brands that is one of the must-go places for its famous Chilli Crab, Jumbo Seafood is also known for Fried Cereal Prawns, Crispy Baby Squid, and Golden Egg Salted Prawns. The East Coast outlet, which is the first restaurant of the Jumbo group, will always be a little special because that’s where most of us had our first “seafood by the sea” dining experience. It is the quintessential Singapore dining experience that is both loved by tourists and locals alike.

Think chunks of sweet crabmeat and al dente pasta, all coated in a smooth, tangy tomato cream sauce.

Equally stunning is the panoramic view from the establishment, where you can watch airliners make their final approach into Changi Airport. If you’re planning to make dinner reservations, ask for a window table and be there in time for the sunset.

Savour the best sea urchin dishes at Uni Gallery by Oosterbay

When it comes to the elusive uni (Japanese for sea urchin), you’ll probably find only two types of people: those who love them and those who don’t. If you belong to the latter, we won’t hold it against you since our writers felt the same — up until recently, that is.

Cue Uni Gallery by Oosterbay, a humble little spot tucked away in The Plaza that serves one of the best and most extensive selections of sea urchins you will ever find on the market. We put our (squirmiest) writers to the test and they came back as converts. We kid you not!

If you’re thinking of giving sea urchins a try, here are our top picks from Uni Gallery to get you acquainted.

1. Le Testuya

IMG_0494

Start your experience right with Le Tetsuya, where the chef takes shredded fresh Hokkaido crab meat and tosses it in a sweet, tart dressing, serving it with a dollop of sea urchin and Sturgeon caviar. The flavours come together in a wonderful balance, with just the right notes of sweetness and umami.

2. Uni Sake Shot

IMG_2894

Need a little something to take the edge off? Here, have a sake shot! For the uninitiated, this Uni Sake Shot isn’t your average palate cleanser – with the addition of ponzu, the sake transforms into a sweet, crisp, and savoury number, with the uni rounding off the flavours beautifully.

3. Uni Oyster

IMG_3521.jpg

The Uni Oyster is one of the main dishes we anticipated: plump New Zealand oysters come served with gleaming globules of Ikura roe and a creamy serving of uni. Don’t even think about splitting this into two mouthfuls; have it in one shot and you’ll see why it’s called its unofficial name is called the “Umami Bomb”.

The first taste that hits your tongue is the oyster’s brininess, followed by the mini explosions of fatty Ikura roe, and the creaminess of the uni brings the flavours together. Bursting with flavour, these little morsels go ‘ka-boom’ in your mouth, leaving you altogether satisfied and craving more! Fair warning: one serving is never enough.

4. Uni Sampler

IMG_4833

As a restaurant specialising in uni, we can think of a better place than Uni Gallery to get uni straight from its shell. If you think all uni taste the same, wash yourself of expectations and give yourself a challenge by tucking into their Uni Sampler.

Comprising 5 types of uni – Shiro, Bafun, Canadian Aka, Santa Barbara Aka, and Kombu-marinated Uni – this is definitely an adventure on a plate for both newbies and epicureans alike. Some uni will taste sweet and mellow while others creamy and bright; you’ll even find robust ones with a hint of brine – whichever one you prefer, this platter will no doubt open your eyes to the wonderful world of this underrated delicacy.

If your friends aren’t fans, rest assured that other Japanese favourites such as a variety of fresh sashimi, succulently grilled wagyu, and more will keep them satisfied.

Whether you’re a novice or a connoisseur, Uni Gallery by Oosterbay is definitely one of the best places in Singapore to appreciate uni. Pop by this little hideout and indulge in a meal to remember!

6 Dining Spots that Mums will Love for Mother’s Day

Here’s your weekly Chope public service announcement: Mother’s Day is this Sunday, and we hope you’re planning a show of gratitude in some way. In true blue Singaporean fashion, we present a list of food-related deals and make your meal-planning sesh a little easier.

Does your mum watch what she (and the rest of the family) eats? Does she wrap up your KFC in kitchen towels to absorb as much oil as possible before she lets you sink your teeth into a chicken thigh, or hound you to take your daily vitamins? Take her to The Garden at Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa, which promises healthy and hearty salads and mains in a tranquil restaurant filled with natural light and plenty of greens. For $60++, you get a three-course set (pumpkin kaffir lime soup, a choice between wasabi miso-glazed Chilean sea bass or sous vide Cajun spiced chicken breast, and chilled aloe vera and mint jelly), coffee or tea, and a glass of prosecco. A waistline-friendly meal to celebrate your mum. Promotion runs until 31 May.

Here you will rely on your remaining senses to savour the food in a pitch black room and spend some real quality time (without the distraction of handphones) with mum! The menu is a three-course mystery meal comprising 12 dishes, though there will also be a complimentary glass of sparkling wine – one less surprise there.

For the no-nonsense mum

IMG_3424.JPGIMG_3438.JPG

Maybe your mum’s a classic Asian tiger mum — curfews, few indulgences, and administering discipline (read: the cane) when it came to finishing homework. Hopefully, you’re a well-adjusted adult today, but chances are Mum is still her stoic, sensible self. Take her to Ryu’s, a sushi bar dedicated to delivering good food and great sake, for a solid, no-frills meal. The set is $128++ for two, with sake add-ons at $30++ per pax. Mum would approve.

  1. Dancing Crab

Leave the formalities at the door because this homely establishment encourages you to get messy, staying true to its country-style Cajun roots. Dining at Dancing Crab can go a little something like this: choose any of the seafood combos in a bag (you can customise your own as well), the dish gets served to you on the table, and you dive in with your bare hands. If not, you could also go for their single plates such as Seafood Jambalaya, Gumbo, Pasta “Goreng” and other scrumptious selections.
