Bali’s top 30 for the holiday season!

Eng | Bahasa

It’s that time of the year again! Like they say, “A little bit of summer is what the whole year’s all about”, and this time, summer coincides with the Muslim religious holiday, Eid-al-Fitr. Since this is a festival that most of Indonesia celebrate, holiday-hotspot Bali will surely be buzzing with tourists from all over — expect some places to be packed like sardines! To prepare yourself, book the best restaurants beforehand so you won’t go home on an empty stomach. Here are some great places to celebrate the holiday season!

Ubud

Kemiri Restaurant (COMO Uma Ubud)

Welcome to the land of yoga and wellness. Take a stroll through Campuhan Ridge Walk, enjoy the lush scenery, and unplug for a bit. Afterwards, you can have an authentic Indonesian lunch at Hujan Locale, Kemiri, Nomad, or The Restaurant at the Chedi Club Tanah Gajah.

It’s time for some Bali-exploration! Be captivated by a kecak dance performance or visit the cheeky Ubud Monkey Forest for the ultimate Bali experience! After that, drop by the Habitat Cafe for a healthy and refreshing meal. But, if you feel like lazing the day away, sink into cool waters and watch the time fly by at Folk, or better yet! Enjoy stunning Ubud alongside Bali’s acclaimed sunset at Sayan House. Reservations are essential but fret not, we’ve got your back. Book your dinner at the best of Ubud — BLANCO par Mandif, Kubu at Mandapa, Pica, and bridges will be your best bets.

Seminyak

Mrs. Sippy Bali

Oh my, we seriously don’t know where to start. Seminyak is such a fun area to explore! Experience the largest saltwater pool at Mrs. Sippy, grab a quick bite at Bo & Bun, or put on your sunnies and sip on a cold rosé while enjoying a delightful meal at Ijen, whereby zero wastage is promoted to lower carbon footprint. Wander around Jl. Kayu Aya and pick your favourites from a treasure trove — from traditional handmade souvenirs to designer boutiques, you name it, this street has it. You won’t be lacking dinner options here in Seminyak with Mamasan, Sarong, Da Maria, and Barbacoa being definite favourites. When you’ve had your fill, dance the night away at La Favela, but don’t forget to snap some shots at the cute photobox on the second floor!

Canggu

From_the_Land_Tongseng_Kambing_1554128131
SVÁ Indonesian Tapas & Bar

Then, move on to indulge in great food at all-time favourite cafe Milk & Madu at Jl. Pantai Berawa, or enjoy a caffeine boost amidst ravishing rice fields at Cinta Cafe. Another must do is renting a motorbike and visiting the bustling local flea market around Batu Bolong area — like they say, reuse and recycle! Spend the rest of your afternoon lounging and watching the sunset from the beautiful La Brisa, surf at Echo Beach, or lay back and relax at the sophisticated COMO beach club. Spoil your taste buds with an exotic twist on traditional Indonesian flavour at SVÁ Indonesian Tapas & Bar. If Japanese is your thing, modern restaurants Musubi and Ji are some of the eateries we take delight in.

Three Buns Quayside: Bring on the Buns

Grill’s on! When Three Buns invited us to try some of their succulent burgers, we knew we had to say yes. For the uninitiated, Three Buns started off churning out juicy burgers and succulent dawgs at Potato Head Singapore, one of the hippest hangouts in town. Their popularity grew, and now this well-loved burger joint has set up shop along Robertson Quay to cater to the growing demands and appetites of their loyal customers.

IMG_0249.jpg

First thing we noticed is that they don’t serve utensils. That’s because they strongly believe in sustainability, hence the recycled wood walls and minimal use of utensils. Also, Chef Adam Penney recommends you to chow down these bad boys with your bare hands. So don’t hesitate to get your hands dirty like how we did!

Fun fact: The chef loves hip hop so if you’re a fan, you’ll love the old school hip hop music playing in the background. You can probably also relate to burger names like Redman and Bun DMC, and their personalised stickers are adorable too!

Sly Stallone

IMG_0245 2.jpg

Every bite of the Sly Stallone is refreshing and satisfying. The burger is packed with pesto flavour, but not so overpowering and you can still taste the layer of flavours from the Australian Dorper lamb patty, Quader de Cavra cheese, juicy heritage tomato slices, and crunchy lettuce. The lamb patty is tender and fragrant so it’s easy on the taste buds. Sandwiched between two thick toasted demi brioche bun, be prepared to get messy with this one.

Redman

ef3c7b3c-54a4-406b-bfa9-b0c9d0740e73.jpg

Love beef rendang? This one’s right up your alley. Redman burger does an interesting spin on beef rendang. In one bite, you can taste the tender 24-hour cooked black Angus beef cheek rendang, pickle mooli (radish), and cucumber slices. The burger hits you with a subtle coconut flavour from the coconut mayo and toasted coconut demi brioche buns. This bad boy has a familiar yet unique local taste with a sweet and spicy kick.

Big Krabby Kane

719c3e1b-8a0b-441a-ad20-e0cd89eae452.jpg

Big Krabby Kane is our favourite. The blue swimmer crab patty covered in salted egg mayonnaise with a touch of chilli, lime, and coriander come together perfectly. We were pleasantly surprised by how thick and flavourful the patty is. The crisp lettuce adds a textural crunch to the burger. Shiok is the word to describe this dish.

9b44dc32-bba2-46ab-a9e0-ecd0fdd92dee.jpg

Besides the burgers, another must-have on the menu is the Miso Dirty Fries. Crispy potato slices  drenched in miso béarnaise sauce, smoked chicken sausage and floss, chives, scallions, and pickle chilli- this dish will whisk you away to sinful nirvana!

IMG_0256 2 2.jpg

What better way to pair your burger than a cold, creamy milkshake? We were thrilled to try 3 MONKEYS, Monkey Shoulder infused banana milkshake. The kick from the whisky perks you right up and the hint of banana and generous amount of whipped cream mellows out the taste from the whisky. Before you know it, you would have finished this thirst-quencher in no time.

If that isn’t enough to tempt you, we’ve got good news to share! Add Three Buns to your supper list as they are offering 1-for-1 burgers or dawgs from Tuesdays to Sundays, starting from 9.30pm. Wind down after work at this relaxing spot after 5pm every Tuesdays to Thursdays to enjoy cocktails and beers at a starting price of $8. The best part? Bring along your furry babies and they get to devour angus beef patties for free when you dine here!

One of Singapore’s iconic dishes, you can find chicken rice all over the country, and for good reason. Everybody from foreigners to local uncles and aunties adores this delicious dish. But how much do you love chicken rice? Could you maybe scarf down a 3kg serving in one sitting?

Prove your love at 289 Xiang Ji Roasted Delights. It hosts a Mega Chicken Rice challenge that gives you the massive plate, worth $28, for free if you can finish it all by yourself.  For those who would rather watch your friends attempt this, don’t forget to order some of the excellent char siew that has just the right amount of char so it remains crispy on the outside, while the fatty meat remains succulent.

2. The Beast

The Beast Burger

The Beast Burger ($125++) is a 7-pound monstrosity that contains (drumroll please):

  • 1.6 pounds of juicy beef patty
  • 1 pound of slow cooked pulled pork
  • 1 pound of Southern buttermilk fried chicken, topped with slaw, lettuce, and tomato

All sandwiched between a 9-inch sesame bun. And of course, what burger meal would be complete without a bucket of sweet potato fries on the side? Mere mortals can share the burger between 4 diners. But if you want to be immortalised on their Wall of Fame, feel free to take on The Beast Burger Challenge and manage to finish it within the time limit, your meal will be free and you’ll get your name added to the Wall of Fame.

If you and your hungry friends are still hungry, The Beast hosts All You Can Eat Chicken Tuesdays, where you get to enjoy juicy Southern Fried Chicken as well as unlimited cornbread, sides, and dessert too!

You’ve got flower crabs, fried goby, all sorts of shellfish, and tiger prawns – all meticulously prepared and assembled with vegetables. Top it all off with a delicious broth (you can choose between garlic soy, mala, tom yum, or curry) for maximum satisfaction. The restaurant prides itself on using the freshest seafood available, which explains why the resulting seafood broth is always so sweet.

4. T Bob’s Corner

T Bob's sharing platter
Cr: tbobscorner.com

Our voracious meat lovers and Muslim friends will be pleased to know that T Bob’s Corner is the place to be for Western fare that is Halal-friendly. And T Bob doesn’t play around when it comes to their “Sharing” options: from a 1 kg platter of lamb cutlets to a 1 kg T-bone steak served with their famous bone marrow, you and your friends will definitely be satisfied if you’re feeling carnivorous. For the particularly ravenous, the star of T Bob’s Corner is a massive 1.4 kg bone-in Angus Tomahawk that supposedly feeds 4 individuals, but no one’s stopping you from trying to finish it by yourself.

Find it at 527 Bedok North Street 3, #01-514, Singapore 460527.
Click here for more information about T Bob’s Corner.

5. Little Diner

Empire Burger

Little Diner is a laid-back restaurant modelled after New York City’s Lower East Side, so expect generous American-style fare with urban-chic decor. And when we say American-style, we mean it in every possible way, right down to their portion sizes. For example, there’s nothing “little” about the enormous Empire Burger that stands at almost a head tall.

Little Diner’s Empire Burger ($55++) is a sandwich loaded with 3 beef patties, bacon, a good mix of swiss and cheddar cheese, caramelised onions, plenty of lettuce and tomatoes, pickles, and a fried egg, with a side of thick-cut fries and house salad. Whew, that was a mouthful. It’s good for a group of 3 to 4 people, but you can take up the Empire Burger Challenge. If you manage to finish the entire thing in 20 minutes, you’ll earn mad props and a free meal. If you can’t finish it within the time limit, you’ll have to pay for the burger. On the bright side, the good folks at Little Diner will throw in a free dessert. That is if you can still stomach dessert.

6. Peperoni Pizzeria

img_8128-copy
Cr: Tableforthree.wordpress.com

If you a-dough pizza as much as we do, how about ordering an XXL 21” pie from Peperoni Pizzeria? Enough to feed 4-6 people, it’s perfect for a small party or family get-together. Make sure you’ve got lots of space in your car though, because the pizza box is so huge that it doesn’t fit on a standard delivery man’s motorcycle, so you’ll have to pick it up yourself.

Choose from options like the tried and tested Classico flavours, or treat yourself to something more premium with the Speciale flavours. Can’t decide? Do the half-and-half or follow your stomach and order two serparate XXLs instead.

7. Roadhouse

Terminator Burger

Roadhouse is a casual diner that prides itself on serving all-American classics: milkshakes and customisable burgers. It’s also home to the 1 kg Terminator Burger Challenge that’s almost as intimidating as Arnold Schwarzenegger himself. The burger has 6 beef patties, grilled in a mighty Josper grill to seal in the juices and impart a nice, smoky sear. The stack also includes cheese, streaky bacon, jalapeños, and coleslaw, all between homemade sesame buns. Finish this tasty burger within 20 minutes – the sea of fries included – and it’s free. Plus, you’ll earn eternal glory on the Roadhouse Wall of Fame. Our recommendation: skip breakfast and wear stretchy pants.

Giant Chirashi DonCr: emporiumshokuhin.com.sg

If you’re always checking out our Japanese Restaurant Guide for the best places to satisfy your sushi or sashimi cravings, then you’re going to want to visit Senmi Sushi – especially if you love chirashi don. And by love, we mean so much that you’ll want to swim in one of them.

Senmi Sushi’s Giant Chirashi Don is brimming with salmon, tuna, swordfish, salmon roe, tamago, and plenty of cucumber for a nice crunch. And while they recommend sharing it between 2 to 3 diners, it is also perfectly sized for hungry individuals who always complain that the standard chirashi don serving is too small. [Egg Hunt Hint!] 9 Unique Burger and Pasta Dishes You Can’t Miss

Think you know your pasta and burgers? Well, think again. In this fast-paced, ever-evolving food scene, restaurateurs and chefs may feel the need to change things up, and give these classics a new lease on life. Sometimes they fall flat. The ones on our list don’t.

1. Tom Yum Seafood Pasta from 49 Seats

SG_49-Seats_Tom-Yam-Salted-Egg-Pasta-with-Chicken-Cutlet.jpg

One of Singapore’s worst kept secrets, 49 Seats was probably the first to make tom yum pasta before it became more ubiquitous. So how do you know they are OG? Request a spiciness level of 49, and see if you can take the heat. The pasta has the texture and creaminess of a carbonara, but the intensity is 100% Thai.

2. Zucca Fettucini or Broccolini Pesto from Original Sin

homepage

These pastas are good for your waistline — everything is vegetarian. (No worries, they are tasty.) We like the Zucchini Pasta, served with a creamy pumpkin sauce, carrots, baby spinach, walnuts and fragrant sage. But when we are feeling edgy, we get the Broccolini Pasta. Apart from the tangy sun-dried tomatoes-and-chilli combination, it is flamed with Absolut Vodka in a pink sauce. Sublime.

3. “Bak Chor Mee” from Labyrinth

Labyrinth Mee Pok Seafood Sambal

It sure looks like one of Singapore’s best noodle dishes but chef Li Guang conjures up an edible illusion to delight the senses. Thin slices of squid, infused with saffron, make up the egg noodles, while the fish cake slices are made from fresh Hokkaido scallops. Get the tasting menu and try guessing what the rest of the dishes are made of.

4. Buah Keluak Noodle by National Kitchen by Violet Oon

unusual-pastas-9
Cr: Eatbook.sg

The exotic lure of the buah keluak, a poisonous fruit that yields aromatic ‘black gold’ when prepared properly, takes centre stage in this dish. Each spaghetti strand is coated with a paste reminiscent of squid ink, but comprising chillis, prawns, and coconut milk, not to mention buah keluak itself. It’s a wonderful way to end a meal of Peranakan favourites.

5. Cereal Prawn Pasta from Atlas Coffeehouse

banner-home

This fusion dish is for the ‘zichar’ lovers up for an adventure, where a plump tiger prawn, coated in cereal batter, sits atop a mound of Aglio Olio-esque spaghetti. There’s enough garlic and chilli padi to convince you it’s a heartland favourite, but bite into a mouthful of cereal-coated pasta, and you know you’ve got something special before you.

6. Salmon Mentaiko Bao or Chilli Crab Bao from Bao Makers x Butler’s Steakbar

chili crabmentaiko
Cr: Marchh.com

Bao Makers takes the best part of the beloved Kong Bak Bao (braised pork belly bun) — the fresh, steamed bun that smells live heaven — and gives it a modern-day twist with a variety of flavours. The salmon mentaiko and chilli crab flavours are among their most popular: we love the indulgence of the former and the sweet kick from the latter.

7. Mac and Cheese Burger from The Beast

The Beast Interior

There’s plenty of heart — and calories — in this burger. The buns are made with the Southern classic that is mac and cheese, hand-shaped and fried with breadcrumbs till it turns a golden-brown. It’s a heart attack-inducing accompaniment for the juicy beef patty slathered in barbecue sauce, but it’s so good we’d do it all over again.

8. Swordfish Burger or Bleu Cheese Burger from The Market Grill

TMG Swordfish BurgerBlue Cheese Burger (1)

You might not think that fish could taste so hearty, but get the Swordfish Burger here and live in ecstasy for the next 20 minutes. The fillet is grilled and paired with herbed mayo, mango salsa, spices and served on a sesame bun. The thick slab of fish meat has heft, and you go away feeling you are indulging in the rich goodness befitting of an oily beef burger. We also like the Bleu Cheese Burger, where the beef patty comes with salty bleu cheese and a sweet burnt onion marmalade and bacon, served in between a walnut raisin bun.

Find it at 208 Telok Ayer Street, Singapore 068642

9. Pulled Pork Burger or Prime Beef Burger with Foie Gras from Two Blur Guys

IMG_0571

This unassuming joint might be called Two Blur Guys, but the chefs sure know what they are doing when it comes to burgers. The Pulled Pork Burger is a generous portion of shredded, slow-cooked pork between toasted buns, dripping with cheese. It’s a messy sight, but sure to be your tummy’s delight. They also do their Prime Beef Burgers well, but we’d up the ante and get the one with foie gras.

4. The Beast: Beast Burger

Behold, the daddy of all burgers has arrived. Featuring 1.6 pounds of juicy beef patty, 1 pound of slow-cooked pulled pork, 1 pound of southern buttermilk fried chicken, a good serving of slaw, lettuce and tomato wedged between a custom-made 9 inch bun and served with a bucket of fries, that sentence won’t be the only thing that’s a mouthful. 5. Two Blur Guys: Duck Rillette

You will find honest burgers here at Two Blur Guys and the Duck Rilette is the perfect example. Mmmm. If duck isn’t your thing though, we recommend their Grilled Chicken Burger. Marinated with Asian spices and topped with gruyere cheese and curry mayo, this burger will titillate your taste buds. And with an unbeatable price, there’s no need to resist anymore.

6. VeganBurg: Avocado Beetroot

Vegetarians – and vegans – rejoice. Finally, a veggie burger that stands up to its meatier competition. The Avocado Beetroot Burger is a hearty soybean patty slathered with beetroot pate and fresh avocado, then finished with crisp lettuce, onion, and tomato. 7. db Bistro & Oyster Bar: The Original db Burger

This is one burger that packs a punch: it’s a sirloin burger filled with generous heapings of tender braised short ribs and foie gras served on a delicious parmesan bun. It is a marvel to see, with a taste that can only be described as heavenly. But burger nirvana is not only achieved with indulgent ingredients. Every element of the dish from the construction to the condiments will make you a believer in intelligent design. No wonder it won the “Best Burger” title in our 2015 Diners’ Choice Awards.
