If you haven’t already been, the newly revamped Funan Mall is THE HOTSPOT after Jewel at Changi. No kidding, this mall has a maze-like layout, and is filled to the brim with innovative retail stalls. That’s why it’s no doubt that Funan is home to one-of-a-kind dining spots like Godmama!

This Peranakan restaurant offers both indoor and alfresco seats, with the latter allowing you to have a great view of Funan’s rooftop garden. Godmama infuses modern elements into its traditional Peranakan plates—their All-Star Egg Skin Popiah is a hit with both the young and the old! We know, you’ve probably been to Joo Chiat for an #OOTD session or two along its pastel-hued shophouses, but here’s another reason to visit the hipster enclave. If you’re pacing around the East, wondering what to have for dinner, head to Jimoto Dining, a quaint Omakase restaurant nestled amongst the other stylish cafes and bars. Helmed by Chef Takahiro Sato, the restaurant serves affordable, quality Japanese fare.

As sushi lovers ourselves, we too were intrigued by how Chef Sato uses Akazu—Red Vinegar—to make the sushi rice. The Red Vinegar adds a touch of acidity, and gives an umami flavour to the sushi rice—oishi! Sake-lovers, we haven’t forgotten about you! With their extensive sake list, you’re sure to find the perfect drink for every course! All omakase courses at Jimoto Dining consist of an appetiser, sushi, and dish of the day from the hot-kitchen. If you’re looking for a quick-fix post work, take up the five-course Toki ($55+), served only from 6—7pm. On the other hand, their Introductory Sanpuru ($68+), innovative Kakushin ($98+) and the premium Zeitaku ($128+) are perfect choices if you’re looking to impress a date.

2. Farangse

Farangse Beef Cheek (fresh eats)
Farangse Interior (fresh eats)

Sweet, spicy and robust flavours are what comes to our minds when we think of Thai cuisine. French flavours on the other hand, are more subdued and sophisticated. But why choose between the two when you can have both? Farangse infuses elements of French and Issan (part of Thailand) cuisine into a one-of-a-kind gastro-medley!

Are you in need of a pick me up? Start off your meal with juicy oysters topped with refreshing Ikura. The kicker? Their oysters are served with Thai chili sauce—talk about a burst of flavor! If you aren’t a seafood-ie, give the Thai salads a go before moving on to the mains. Its perfect balance of sweet and sour is sure to whet your appetite! For the mains, tuck into the tender Beef Cheek, braised in red wine and nestled on a bed of mashed potatoes.

3. IZY Fook

IZY FOOK dishes (fresh eats)

Cr: IZY FOOK

We’re sure you’re a little confused by the wacky name. Meaning ‘一起福’ (together we prosper), this no-frills Japanese kitchen is inspired by old school Singaporean Cantonese restaurants. Step into IZY FOOK, and bask in the electric energy reminiscent of 70s Chinatown watering holes.

The swanky restaurant bar is split into two sections: The ‘Living Room’ and ‘Dining Hall’. Step into the ‘Living Room’ and be greeted by illustrations from Hong Kong’s up and coming illustrator Jonathan Jay Lee. Truly embodying its namesake, the ‘Living Room’ is where you can find ultra-hip diners bopping to lively hip hop tracks while noshing on roasted and charred Cantonese meats (siew yok anyone?). If you’re looking for a pre-drink snack, get the Buta No Shogayaki. It’s pan-seared ginger stick rolled with pork belly, deglazed with soy sauce and sansho slices. Super juicy and charred to perfection, there’s really no better way to kickstart your night! Need something heartier? You can’t go wrong with their Wagyu Truffle Don!

Looking to gather with friends over a cocktail or two? Head over to the ‘Dining Hall’. Located at the back of the restaurant, this cosy enclave is able to accommodate 50 people comfortably, and is perfect for a private hurrah with your favourite people!

Find it at 27 Club St, Singapore 069413

4. Noka

Fresh Eats Noka Singapore
Cr: NOKA Singapore

Just like you, we’re suckers for a good view. So where better to enjoy the spectacular Singaporean skyline than at rooftop restaurant NOKA! Perched atop the newly revamped Funan Digital Life Mall, this Japanese restaurant is located right smack in the middle of Singapore’s Civic District. Opening on 28thJune, NOKA is the brainchild behind by Spa Esprit, and sister restaurant to Open Farm Community, which is why the same level of dedication to nature and the environment is upheld.

The well-loved farm-to-table concept at OFC is extended to NOKA. We recommend choosing a seat near the windows, where you can sit back and relish in the stunning view of the 5000 sq-ft urban garden that runs alongside the restaurant walls. What’s more: veggies from the edible garden are used in NOKA’s dishes. Their ECG Mushroom and Black Cod Saiko-Yaki both utilize the garden’s wide array of herbs and vegetables, making sure you get the ultimate farm-to-table experience!

Sundays with Les Bouchons’ New Brunch Menu

Rise and shine, folks. It’s time for some Sunday brunching! Come with your family or friends for the new Bouchons Riviera Brunch, the perfect perk-me-up on a lazy Sunday.

Les Bouchons was established in 2002, with its first opening at Ann Siang Hill. The Robertson Quay outlet boasts a similar French bistro vibe and with the added charm of the French Riviera, comes the name Les Bouchons Rive Gauche. Helmed by French Chef Mickael Cornac, guests can expect a truly authentic dining experience that’s rooted in Parisian culture and flavour. Bubbly and amicable, Chef Mickael spoke with such gusto for every dish, throwing in nibbles of fun facts, for a little behind-the-scenes look at the concoction of the beautiful plates before our eyes.

Launched last April, Bouchons Rivera Brunch is served only at its Robertson Quay outlet. The menu, creatively-inspired by the French Riviera, is the brand’s first-ever attempt at brunch. And dare we say, it was a pretty, darn good brunch!

For starters, give a shot at the Eggs Mimosa and Escargot de Bourgogne. The former is more commonly known as Devil’s Eggs — a creamy mousse of eggs accompanied by garlic-sauteed asparagus for an extra bite. With the clever addition of dashes of mustard and lemon juice, the eggy rendition is flavourful and a rightfully delightful starter.

Eggs Mimosa $14++

Another great way to ease yourselves into the mains would be Les Bouchons’ signature escargots. The French delicacy is served with warm, toasted breads from French bakery Paul, great for moping up the deliciously addictive garlic-parsley butter. Psst, Chef Mickael is pretty generous with seconds too!

Escargot de Bourgogne $16++

Moving on to the mains, you’ll be glad you came in groups! The serving is exceptionally generous, great for sharing. From nutritious bowls to hearty roasts, there’s definitely something for everyone!

Starting off with the health-conscious, this one’s for you. The Wellness Bowl is the perfect blend of textures and flavours — crunchy granola, honey yoghurt, tea-soaked goji berries, fresh bananas, chia seeds, and get this, balsamic-infused strawberries! The infusion lends a surprisingly tangy twist to the sweet fruit that refreshes your palate.

Riviera Wellness Bowl $18++

For a savoury healthy option, go for the Guele de Bois. Quipped as Bouchons Hangover Cure, this is another great bowl of goodness. Colourful and decadent, the dish boasts the highly raved ‘Impossible’ meatballs, strong scents of truffle oil with creamy scrambled eggs, and sides of juicy roasted cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, and asparagus. The meatballs exude a slightly sweet undertone, bringing out the truffled eggs really well in a nice pairing.

Gueule de Bois (Bouchons Hangover Cure) $24++

For carnivores, fret not! Meet the meats. Bouchons Sunday Roast will have you drooling at the sight of the glorious meaty delight. For the roast, there is a weekly rotation between meats like quail and slow-cooked short ribs. For our visit, we were treated to the amazing 10-hour slow-cooked short ribs. Unbelievably fragrant, the beef was infused beautifully with rosemary, garlic, and thyme — simply melt-in-your-mouth umaminess. Meltingly-tender, the roast is gastronomically worth every single calorie and penny.

Remember to call in advance to see if your favourite is available for the coming Sunday brunch!

Bouchons Sunday Roast $32++

If it’s your first time at Les Bouchons, then you’ve got to try the Grilled Black Angus Rib Eye Steak. A Les Bouchons mainstay, be prepared to fall in love with the succulent yet still delicately-tender cut, complete with free-flow house-made fries! The vigneron (shallot and mustard) butter is slathered all over the meat, giving the 300g steak an added richness. It’s no wonder that the juicy cut remains a best-selling crowd favourite till this day.

Grilled Black Angus Rib Eye Steak $39.80++

As brunch winds down, end off your Sunday outing on a sweet note. Chef Mickael has whipped up desserts with just as much passion as the City of Love. Bite into the decadent Chocolate Brownie, served warm and contrasted against the cool vanilla ice-cream atop. Made with 66% dark chocolates, rest assured that the fudgy dessert won’t be cloyingly sweet.

Chocolate Brownie “Fait Maison” $10++

Another Les Bouchons favourite, the Creme Brulee will steal the hearts of sweet-lovers. Velvety-smooth without the eggy custard taste, the rendition here is invigorated with a slight citrusy hint, courtesy of the creative Chef Mickael. Scoop a spoonful of that smokey, caramelised brown sugar coating and you’ll soon be in French heaven. Other dessert options include the Crepe, with choices of Nutella, fine sugar, banana, or honey — great for the little ones.

Creme Brulee “Fait Maison” $12++
Crepes $8++

If you woke up feeling hungry, head down to Les Bouchons Rive Gauche for a Riviera brunch that won’t disappoint. Sunday brunching starts from 11.30am – 3.30pm in the afternoon.

Rizu Modern Japanese Cuisine: Omakase Done Right

Just when we thought that we’ve tried all the Japanese spots in Singapore, more seem to pop up every month! If Telok Ayer is your usual haunt, it’s time to add another sushiya to your list. Cue Rizu Modern Japanese Cuisine, the latest addition to the slew of hangouts at Duxton Hill that is sure to give the other eateries a run for their money.

A Cosy Japanese Respite

If you’re looking for a quiet space to enjoy an exquisite Japanese spread, look no further than this quaint sushiya. The ambience is rather dim, which may not be ideal if you’re trying to take snapshots of the gorgeous interiors and dishes. However, rest assured that the experience here will make up for it! Choose a seat al fresco to soak in the ambiance along Duxton Hill, or take a table indoors and delight in the deep blue interiors of the restaurant.

The service is attentive but not ostentatious, and the waiting staff is always ready to answer any queries about the menu items. Attention to detail is impeccable here; from the food down to the tableware, small meaningful details are added to give Rizu that extra personal touch!

Simple Yet Impressive Japanese Creations

The best way to have a taste of Chef Noboru Shimohigashi’s culinary ingenuity is through Rizu’s Special Omakase, comprised of 11 specially-prepared dishes using the freshest ingredients of the day. Bringing diners through a journey of flavours, Chef Noboru brings diners on an experience to remember.

Some of our favourites include:

Live Lobster, Abalone, and Sashimi

When this massive platter hits the table, you’ll be mesmerised by the assortment of fresh sashimi on display. This spread features a worldly catch from some of the best fishing sites across the globe, from the cool waters of Boston and Norway to the Eastern seas of Japan and Korea. Need a testament to its freshness? Pay close attention to the ‘decorative’ lobster head – if you’re lucky enough, you’ll catch it moving from time to time!

Lobster Bisque

Unlike the creamy European version, the seafood bique at Rizu is a lighter version that’s pleasing to the palate and heartwarming at the same time. Packed with flavours of the ocean, the lobster bisque is extremely satisfying and the chunks of lobster meat add texture to the smooth, delicious broth.

Foie Gras Sauté with Plum Sauce

Chef Noboru’s ingenious way of pairing the buttery foie gras with the figs, plum sauce, and ume flesh makes this seemingly simple dish stand out on its own. The refreshing tartness of the fruits cut through the savoury foie gras – it’s undeniably a match made in heaven.

Wagyu Steak with Special Wasabi Sauce

Indulgence seems to be a recurring theme in Rizu’s omakase but we’re not complaining! One good example is Chef Noboru’s Wagyu Steak with Special Wasabi Sauce. Tender and beautifully marbled steak slices are seared to perfection, served with a side of seasonal vegetables. For those weary of wasabi, you can take comfort in knowing that the sauce tastes more like earthy sesame sauce dressing.

Sukiyaki Rice Bowl with Miso Soup

Fans of sukiyaki will adore this dish. Savoury and slightly sweet, the beef slices are cooked extremely tender with a melt-in-your-mouth consistency. The flavours lean towards the stronger side, but with the light miso soup, it comes together beautifully. The golden, runny onsen egg gives the rice extra depth that amps up the lux factor.

Crumble, Pear Gelee and Pear with Vanilla Ice Cream

To cleanse the palate, treat yourself to the Crumble, Pear Gelee and Pear with Vanilla Ice Cream. For those watching your waistlines, this light dessert is the perfect way to round up a meal. It’s not extremely sweet, which makes it a perfect dishes for those who aren’t too fond sweetness.

Discover a hidden world of Japanese yakitori at Bincho

People looking for a unique dining experience should head to Bincho, which combines the contemporary and the traditional. Inspired by the yakitori-ya in Osaka, this hip bistro operates in an old-school kopitiam. In the day, you’ll find them hawking unassuming local favourites, such as mee pok and kopi roti. Come nightfall, the space transforms into a modern open-concept yakitori bar headed by Chef Asai Masashi, with the bar featuring progressive and playful Japanese-inspired cocktails, hard liquor, sake, and more. If your date’s a sucker for Japanese food, bring them here to indulge in some skewer-less meats that are full of smoky, meaty goodness!

Head down the Moh Guan Terrace alley and around the back of the unassuming Hua Bee stand to find a metal door with small Bincho lettering. Then down the rabbit hole you go, transitioning briskly from the traditional neighbourhood feel to a hipster atmosphere, complete with rough edges, shady lighting, and oxidized copper tones. Take a seat at the marbled bar for a front row seat to all the grilling action, or the domed booths to get your drink on, like the restaurant’s most notable fruit, herb and sake-centric cocktails from the resident barkeep. With both food and drink menus largely in-flux at the whim of the chef and bartender, it’s best to go with the daily recommendations.

Food-wise, skewer-less yakitori is just the smoky, meaty goodness you’re accustomed to. Chicken parts are especially tasty, while the Miyabi hot pot offers an alternative to the grill. As with most hyper-cool gastrobars, both portions and elbowroom are limited, while prices tend to be upmarket. However, with an underground vibe this cool, and a contrasting concept this daring, both the search and cost are certainly worth it!

When visiting the posh neighbourhood of Dempsey, you might be spoiled for choice. From decadent award-winning Peranakan cuisine to the heritage tempura dishes, we’ll give you the low down on the different eateries and which dishes stood out best.

Candlenut, A Taste of Peranakan Pleasure

CN - Interior 2018

When a restaurant serves rendang so tender that it melts in your mouth, you know it’s a winner. Their Wagyu Beef Rendang, with heartwarming spices and bursting with flavour, is a must-have.

CN---Blue-Swimmer-Crab-Curry---Chope
One of the highlights we can’t get enough of at Candlenut is the Blue Swimmer Crab Curry. Rest assured that this golden bowl of creamy, spicy goodness will leave your taste buds satisfied with its piquant Assam notes with hints of Kaffir lime. They don’t skimp on the ingredients either, as this appetising curry is made with loads of fresh crabs that lend it a soft, oceanic flavour.

Candlenut-Buah-Keluak-Ice-Cream.jpg
Staying true to its roots, Candlenut introduces desserts with a Peranakan flair as well. One such creation is their Buah Keluak Ice Cream. Experience Casual Japanese at Ippoh Tempura Bar by Ginza Ippoh

IP---Chef-Seki---Chope
If you didn’t already know, Osaka’s oldest premium tempura restaurant Ippoh sets up its first Southeast Asian outlet at COMO Dempsey.

The soft lighting and simple décor at this tiny tempura house will have you feeling right at home once you step in through the rather private entrance. The ambience here maintains cosy and minimalist, with only a few bar counter eats and a couple of tables. From its interiors down to the custom-made bowls and utensils, everything here is made with a personal touch. If you’re looking for an intimate moment either alone or with a significant other, this is the perfect spot.

IMG_9873
Ippoh Tempura Bar prides itself with their omakase menu, but lunch crowds hankering for a quick fix will be happy to know that they serve lunch sets as well. Starting with the house-made goma tofu, it’s a classic example of the chef’s impeccable skills. The tofu is made with ground sesame seeds, and its texture is unlike usual store-bought tofu: slightly firm with a gentle fragrance, every mouthful is invigorating.

With Chef Masaru Seki’s immaculate tempura skills, diners are able to sample the flavours of the fresh ingredients encased in the delicate, crispy batter. Enjoy them with a bowl of rice or opt for cold somen noodles for something more refreshing.

A Contemporary Dining Experience at The Dempsey Cookhouse & Bar

TDCB Interior
Looking for an upscale meal? The Dempsey Cookhouse & Bar is your best bet. Elegantly decorated with marble table tops and columns, aluminium furnishings, and lush greenery, we can’t help but be charmed by the friendly and relaxed ambience. Dishing out the effortlessly gorgeous creations, Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten introduces modern European dishes with local interpretations that represent the melting pot of cultures in Singapore.

A crowd favourite at Dempsey’s Cookhouse is the Crispy Salmon Sushi. The sushi rice is fried to a satisfying crisp, and carrot-orange salmon sashimi glazed with soy sauce is added on top of the crispy rice with a touch of chipotle mayo and mint leaf that tie all the flavours together. The delicate Egg Caviar, on the other hand, is addicting with its smooth egg whites rendered flavourful with a generous dollop of caviar.

When it comes to pizza, ultimate indulgence lies in the Black Truffle & Fontina Pizza. Carefully crafted and baked in a cherry wood oven, the pie is spread generously with French black truffle paste and cheese.

Savour global flavours at COMO Cuisine

COMO Cuisine Interior (2)
True to the personality of COMO hotels around the world, COMO Cuisine brings exciting international flavours to the table. They’ve recently introduced High Teas for Tuesdays and Fridays as well, so there’s more to look forward to with your besties!

Decked out in industrial chic furnishings and suspended greenery on the ceilings, the peaceful ambience at this establishment will enchant you.

IMG_0356
We were smitten by COMO’s Snapper Curry, served with fluffy saffron rice. The thick, decadent curry is made with coconut milk and generous servings of snapper that adds depth to the sauce. Vegan options for their dishes are also available, which makes it the perfect spot for any diner regardless of their dietary restrictions.

The star dish, however, is the Parfait that had us all in awe. Made with Butterfly Pea flowers, pineapple, and crushed lemongrass ice, this refreshing dessert is inspired by the local ice cream sandwich.

8 Most Unique Coffees in Singapore

Come October 1st, it’ll be International Coffee Day, the day where all coffee aficionados unite in celebrating the gorgeous creation that is coffee! We commemorate this day in honour of all the hard work that has been put in to produce every cuppa – from the farms to your local coffeehouse, and into your hands.

This year, as a tribute to all the men & women in the coffee chain, we have gathered a list of the most uniquely flavoured coffees in Singapore, and where you can find them! Don’t forget to share this article with your coffee-lovin’ friend or S/O, and make a date to have a sip!

1. Oriole Coffee + Bar

image.png

Situated in front of the bustling town crowd near Somerset, Oriole Coffee serves up a mean cup of coffee, especially when it comes to their robust hand-pours such as the Taisho White. The Taisho range is served in cute glass bottles and features their famous cold brew made using coffee beans that have been roasted locally.

The Taisho White is a cold brew that has been enriched with a shot of Oriole’s specialty M.A.D milk made using macadamias, almonds, and dates. The end result? A brew that’s crisp and creamy, with a light hint of sweetness sans dairy – suitable for our lactose intolerant and vegan friends!

2. The Coffee Academics

Sip on a spicy cup of latte with The Coffee Academics Pepper Agave, a latte made with natural raw agave nectar from Mexico and ground black pepper. It’s smooth, robust and creamy with sweet and spicy notes that’ll excite your taste buds. Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!

If you’re a fan of more local flavours, then check out Jawa, a Latte Macchiato infused with Gula Jawa from Indonesia, with hints of coconut and pandan.

Fancy a cup of cotton candy coffee? The Sweet Little Rain Coffee at Mellower Coffee features a ball of cotton candy placed strategically above a cup of hot Americano. The concept is that the steam from the coffee will melt the cotton candy, allowing the molten confectionery to drip into your Americano and sweeten it.

For those who love their booze and brew, Mellower also has a range of alcoholic coffees such as Guinnespresso (Whiskey with Espresso) and Gordon GF’s Temptation, featuring Gordon Gin with Ice Drip Yirgacheffe, a type of Ethiopian coffee.
