Fiery delights at Qi – House of Sichuan & Forbidden Duck’s familiar favourites at Marina Bay Financial Centre

Despite being an office and residential hub, Marina Bay Financial Centre is also home to many reputable restaurants. This week, we take you through highlights of Chinese gastronomy, starting with Sichuan hot plates and finishing off with the familiar flavours of Beijing.

Think You Can Handle the Heat? Head down to Qi – House of Sichuan

SG_Qi-SiChuan_Interior 4
As a Michelin star awardee in the Michelin guide Hong Kong Macau, Qi – House of Sichuan offers a spectrum of flavours to tease your taste buds. This casual-chic restaurant exudes a laid-back ambience that lets its dishes do the talking.

IMG_20180719_190754
Start easy with the Bang Bang Wantons, where juicy parcels of meat in a silky skin are served in a smooth peanut sauce and a dash of chilli oil. The sweet and salty peanut sauce eases you into the spice while the chilli oil provides the soft hit of heat.

00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180719191105047_COVER
If you’re feeling adventurous, amp up the heat factor with the Chili Fried Iberico Pork Sichuan Style. This plate of fiery indulgence is something of a staple in Sichuan, where a generous handful of dried chillies are stir-fried with the meat of your choice. The deep-fried Iberico pork is satisfyingly crispy and juicy with a healthy amount of fat to cut through the heat, giving it a rounded and more balanced flavour profile.

00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180719191741394_COVER
Need a break from the heat? This Sugar Glazed Ginger and Scallion Beef is a welcoming respite. The sugar-coated Angus beef is pan-fried to give it a nice texture and a satisfying, caramelised crunch. Stir-fried with ginger to impart warmth and scallions to add a touch of sweetness, this dish is easily a family favourite!

SG_Qi-SiChuan_Braised Garoupa Fish Fillet in Chili Oil Soup
Upon recommendation, we end our meal with the much-raved-about Braised Grouper Fish Fillet in Chilli Oil. The sheer size of the dish may seem intimidating but believe us – it’s well worth the wait. While traditional versions of this dish are too oily, Qi tweaked theirs so that diners can enjoy the goodness of the broth sans oil. The fish fillets are mild and tender which pairs well with the bright, savoury broth.

Savour Authentic Beijing Flavours with a Twist at Forbidden Duck

Forbidden-Duck-1
Cr: Shout.sg

Across Qi – House of Sichuan sits Forbidden Duck, a modern restaurant by world-renowned ‘Demon Chef’ Alvin Leung offering contemporary Cantonese cuisine with a twist. Forbidden Duck amps up the wow factor with dishes that showcase creativity and impeccable flavours. On top of the popular dishes from its Hong Kong establishment, the Singapore outlet carries locally-inspired specials as well.

SG_Forbidden Duck_Marinated Duck Tongue and Jelly Fish with Sichuan Green Sauce
Those familiar with Chef Alvin will know to expect dishes that are no less than innovative, like the Marinated Duck Tongue and Jellyfish with Sichuan Green Sauce. This chilled starter whets the appetite, with the tangy Sichuan green sauce and snappy jellyfish adding extra texture and brightness to the dish.

Iberico_Pork_Char_Siew_1
The exceptionally succulent Spanish Iberico Pork Char Siu comes gleaming with a layer of savoury sweet char siew sauce. The restaurant uses quality, imported Spanish Iberico that impart a mellow yet unforgettable flavour that’s pleasing and comforting at the same time. We’re not exaggerating when we say that this melt-in-your-mouth goodness will leave you craving more!

SG_Forbidden Duck_Slow Roasted Whole Duck
A visit to Forbidden Duck is never complete without their pièce de résistance – the Signature Slow Roasted Duck. The duck, with its crispy skin and tender meat, arrives with a basket of Calamansi mantou and condiments. The Calamansi-infused buns are a delightful touch, adding a refreshing component to this otherwise flavourful dish. You can also customise your own dish by adding scallions, salt, or garlic paste into the buns with your slices of juicy duck meat.

SG_Forbidden Duck_Seafood Rice in Aromatic Duck Soup
Seemingly simple, the Seafood Rice in Aromatic Duck Soup is one dish you mustn’t miss! The presentation for this is something of a spectacle too. Crispy rice is poured into a clay pot of boiling hot duck broth before your eyes, creating an exciting sizzle and aroma. Additionally, the seafood adds a sweet touch to the extremely flavourful deep duck soup.

SG_Forbidden Duck_Giant Egg Tart
Go big or go home, as they say; in this case, we went all the way with their Giant Egg Tart. Unlike egg tarts we’ve had anywhere else, this classic Hong Kong favourite gets an upsized makeover. A buttery crust cup encases wobbly, golden egg custard with sweet marmalade filling. With a dessert this satisfying, we can’t think of a better way to end the meal!

Luxuriate in Quality Chinese fare at Golden Peony

Chinese cuisines are a dime a dozen here in Singapore, which explains why locals are exceptionally particular when it comes to quality. One such restaurant that lives up to these expectations is Golden Peony, a beautiful establishment serving up decadent Chinese fare.

Golden Peony1
You’ll feel right at home when you first step into the modernly vast space, located on the 3rd level of the swanky Conrad Centennial Hotel. The warmly lit ambience and contemporary interiors ooze chic without being ostentatious, making it a perfect spot for friendly gatherings and intimate occasions. Classic Chinese dishes adorn the menu so you can expect the upgraded favourites including Sweet & Sour Pork and Stir-Fried French Bean.

Not convinced? We’ll help you out:

Something Succulent: Roast ‘London’ Duck

Roast ‘London’ Duck with Parma ham, crispy beancurd skin and pineapple roll with homemade crepes
A testament to Chef Ku’s impeccable skills is the Roast ‘London’ Duck (特色伦敦鸭两味) – a dish akin to Peking Duck but with a twist. Here, the duck is served two ways: first in a homemade crepe, then as is alongside condiments to complement it with.

We recommend first going for the former, where a pristine slice of roast duck with parma ham, pineapple, and crispy beancurd skin are ready to be rolled in a homemade crepe for your dining pleasure. If you prefer savouring the duck as is, the juicy slices of roast duck on the side will delight you. Don’t forget the spice dip for a little flavour boost!

A Little Bit of Warmth: Golden Double-boiled Seafood Soup in Mini Golden Pumpkin

Double-boiled New Caledonia ‘Obsiblue’ Prawn with Bamboo Pith and Conpoy in a Mini Pumpkin
Savour the essence of the sea with the Golden Double-boiled Seafood Soup in Mini Golden Pumpkin (金瓜盅炖海鲜汤). We beamed when this cheerful bowl of goodness brimming with seafood and all things delicious arrived at our table.

Each spoonful of broth immediately exudes depth and warmth, making it almost impossible not to love. Tuck in further and discover plump, fresh prawns, tender conpoy and more hidden treasures within.

From Up North: Baked Canadian Sea Perch with Red Wine Sauce

Baked Canadian sea perch with red wine sauce
Love fish? Then this Baked Canadian Sea Perch with Red Wine Sauce (红酒焗鲈鱼) is definitely up your alley. Enjoy simplicity at its finest as you bite into the gorgeously baked sea perch with the sweet and savoury red wine sauce. Fleshy and fragrant, the sea perch has a very clean flavour that works beautifully with the red wine sauce.

A Bowl of Indulgence: Stewed Lobster

Stewed Lobster with ginger, spring onion and egg gravy served with crispy egg noodle ball
More seafood goodness awaits as Golden Peony dishes out the indulgent Stewed Lobster with Ginger, Spring Onion, and Egg Gravy served with Crispy Egg Noodle Ball (姜葱滑蛋开边龙虾脆面球).

Chef Ku gets a little creative with the presentation as the succulent lobster is shown playing with the noodle ball in the sea of ‘egg-gravy’. Spoon the hot gravy over the crisp noodle to soften it before you dig in, and savour every mouthful with a bit of the lobster and gravy. Fun has never tasted this good!

Whether it’s a family feast you seek or an indulgent meal for two, the fine Chinese fare at this exquisite restaurant is sure to satisfy.

Chill at Common Man Stan over satisfying nosh and brilliant drinks

Need to catch a mid-day break or a place to recuperate after the daily grind? Head down to Common Man Stan for a comfortable respite in the CBD. Decked out in minimalistic modern-chic interiors with a clean and inviting vibe, stepping into this cafe strips away your worries almost instantaneously.

The dishes at Common Man Stan isn’t complicated either: while their breakfast and lunch menus see the usual cafe selections, the dinner menu delves into a more gratifying lineup. If you didn’t know about Common Man Stan’s dinner offerings, here’s a sneak peek to let you in on the 411.

The Shining Starter: Tofu Sisig

00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180717194751819_COVER
Traditionally made with chopped up pork bits, crisp from the sizzling hot plate it’s served in, sisig is a popular pork-based dish from the Philippines. However, Common Man Stan serves Tofu Sisig instead. The fried tofu is perfect for soaking up all that tangy dressing, while the tortilla chips make for the best vessel to transport those tasty morsels of tofu into your mouth. Appetising and packed with flavour, we can’t think of a better way to kickstart a meal.

Magnificent Mains: Pork Belly Cha Shu & Herb Crusted Chicken Schnitzel

Pork Belly Cha Siu
Once you’re done with your appetiser, say hello to the indulgent Pork Belly Cha Shu. Marvellously fatty (read: delicious) pork belly is cooked until it’s fork-tender and served with umami Tonkotsu sauce and a side of truffled kangkong . The flavours are robust and fulfilling, and the pumpkin puree helps to cut through the pork fat with its mellow sweetness.

Herb Crusted Chicken Schnitzel
Whether you’re packing an appetite or sharing a meal, the Herb Crusted Chicken Schnitzel is your go to. Crisp yet tender and overall satisfying, you can’t go wrong with this plate of comfort! The herbed crust help zhoosh up the cutlets, and a squirt of lemon brightens up the flavours too. To cleanse the palate, the celeriac & radish remoulade works wonders.

A Delightful Dessert: Churros with Caramel or Chocolate Sauce

00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180717210951945_COVER00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180717193310420_COVER
Where good coffee is abundant, one does not get simply end a meal without ordering a plate of Churros. These golden twiglets are dusted with cinnamon sugar and served with a side of caramel or chocolate sauce. Pair that with a side of warm coffee and you’re all set for the night! Need a little pick me up? We recommend swapping the java for the CMCR Hot Chocolate with Grounded Pleasures Artisanal Chocolate (trust us on this one).

From fulfilling cafe fare in the day to generous dinner selections to end the night, you can always count on trusty ol’ Common Man Stan to bring you the best of both meals.

Uncle Kiisu takes Omakase to a whole new level

Many of us are know what Omakase is, but Uncle Kiisu brings it to a whole new level, offering Japanese dishes infused with Peranakan flavours. Oh my god, say what? Uncle Kiisu is offering a 1-for-1 special on their #OhMyGutsSay 8-course omakase menu this month. Every course is an element of surprise, yet evokes a sense of familiarity with its local twist. This Chope Exclusives special is only available in August, so start booking away with the promo code CE8UK!

Chicken Rice Musubi & Nasi Lemak Musubi

Chicken Rice Musubi & Nasi Lemak Musubi 2

Just when you think you know sushi, think again: embrace your inner Singaporean with the Chicken Rice Musubi and Nasi Lemak Musubi, where Japanese favourites come grain-to-grain with locally-inspired flavours. They may look like your usual sushi but one bite is enough to convince you that these babies are local, through and through. The flavours of the chicken rice with chilli sauce and the taste of sambal, otah, and Nasi Lemak are unmistakable and, dare we say it, endearing.

Mentaiko Cheese Bruschetta

Mentaiko Cheese Bruschetta_2

If you’re familiar with bruschetta, you’ll know to expect a slice of grilled bread rubbed with garlic and topped with freshly chopped tomatoes and olive oil. At Uncle Kiisu, however, you’re treated to a localised take on the Italian favourite: their Mentaiko Cheese Bruschetta is served as a crispy you tiao or dough fritter that’s doused over with sharp mentaiko cheese and a dollop of gleaming ikura roe. Salty with a whole lotta crunch, this quirky creation is definitely worth a try.

Mythical Chawanmushi

Mythical Chawanmushi

Uncle Kiisu’s chawanmushi will have you forgetting the traditional ones in no time! Their version of the steamed egg custard is filled with hotate (scallop) chunks, and a truffle-infused jelly shaped like a magical unicorn sits atop an overflowing pile of ikura roe. Talk about indulgence! It’s almost too beautiful to dig into but trust us: the best way to enjoy this thing is to mix everything together and have it one bite at a time.

Sambal Kuro Ribs

Sambal Kuro Ribs.jpg

Love something with a kick? You can’t go wrong with the Sambal Kuro Ribs. Making this bad boy goes a little something like this: take a slab of Iberico pork ribs and steam-bake it overnight in a sambal marinade. Right before serving, buah keluak is lathered all over and torched to give it that nice, aburi char. Juicy and robust, this massive platter is enough to satisfy your fiery cravings, that’s for sure!

MTK by Aunty M

MTK by Aunty M_2

Wok hei, wok hei, and more wok hei! We can’t praise Uncle Kiisu enough for the MTK by Aunty M, a plate of mousetail noodles that’s wok-fried to perfection in their secret concoction of spices. Every mouthful gives you an explosion of flavours – the savoury century egg chunks, fresh minced prawn bits, and tender pork slices – and they tempt you to dive in for more.

Kiisu Muah Chee

Kiisu Muah Chee

Expect to be served with local-realness as their dessert on the menu hits a little closer to home. The Kiisu Muah Chee is given a Japanese treatment, flavoured with matcha powder, black sesame, and peanut powder. We were lucky enough to try the yuzu-flavoured one and it’s definitely something we’ve not had anywhere else! Pillowy and simple, this dish is just what you need to end a flavour-packed meal.

Just a heads-up, the menu varies each day according to the chef’s preference. However, we can assure you that the dishes will not disappoint you! Located at Square2 Novena, it is within walkable distance from Novena MRT station, so no excuse to go and visit Uncle Kiisu! Remember the deal is only valid throughout August.
