If you’re feeling adventurous, amp up the heat factor with the Chili Fried Iberico Pork Sichuan Style. This plate of fiery indulgence is something of a staple in Sichuan, where a generous handful of dried chillies are stir-fried with the meat of your choice. The deep-fried Iberico pork is satisfyingly crispy and juicy with a healthy amount of fat to cut through the heat, giving it a rounded and more balanced flavour profile.

00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180719191741394_COVER
Need a break from the heat? This Sugar Glazed Ginger and Scallion Beef is a welcoming respite. The sugar-coated Angus beef is pan-fried to give it a nice texture and a satisfying, caramelised crunch. Stir-fried with ginger to impart warmth and scallions to add a touch of sweetness, this dish is easily a family favourite!

SG_Qi-SiChuan_Braised Garoupa Fish Fillet in Chili Oil Soup
Upon recommendation, we end our meal with the much-raved-about Braised Grouper Fish Fillet in Chilli Oil. The sheer size of the dish may seem intimidating but believe us – it’s well worth the wait. While traditional versions of this dish are too oily, Qi tweaked theirs so that diners can enjoy the goodness of the broth sans oil. The fish fillets are mild and tender which pairs well with the bright, savoury broth.

Savour Authentic Beijing Flavours with a Twist at Forbidden Duck

Forbidden-Duck-1
Cr: Shout.sg

Across Qi – House of Sichuan sits Forbidden Duck, a modern restaurant by world-renowned ‘Demon Chef’ Alvin Leung offering contemporary Cantonese cuisine with a twist. Forbidden Duck amps up the wow factor with dishes that showcase creativity and impeccable flavours. On top of the popular dishes from its Hong Kong establishment, the Singapore outlet carries locally-inspired specials as well.

SG_Forbidden Duck_Marinated Duck Tongue and Jelly Fish with Sichuan Green Sauce
Those familiar with Chef Alvin will know to expect dishes that are no less than innovative, like the Marinated Duck Tongue and Jellyfish with Sichuan Green Sauce. This chilled starter whets the appetite, with the tangy Sichuan green sauce and snappy jellyfish adding extra texture and brightness to the dish.

Iberico_Pork_Char_Siew_1
The exceptionally succulent Spanish Iberico Pork Char Siu comes gleaming with a layer of savoury sweet char siew sauce. The restaurant uses quality, imported Spanish Iberico that impart a mellow yet unforgettable flavour that’s pleasing and comforting at the same time. We’re not exaggerating when we say that this melt-in-your-mouth goodness will leave you craving more!

SG_Forbidden Duck_Slow Roasted Whole Duck
A visit to Forbidden Duck is never complete without their pièce de résistance – the Signature Slow Roasted Duck. The duck, with its crispy skin and tender meat, arrives with a basket of Calamansi mantou and condiments. The Calamansi-infused buns are a delightful touch, adding a refreshing component to this otherwise flavourful dish. You can also customise your own dish by adding scallions, salt, or garlic paste into the buns with your slices of juicy duck meat.

SG_Forbidden Duck_Seafood Rice in Aromatic Duck Soup
Seemingly simple, the Seafood Rice in Aromatic Duck Soup is one dish you mustn’t miss! The presentation for this is something of a spectacle too. Crispy rice is poured into a clay pot of boiling hot duck broth before your eyes, creating an exciting sizzle and aroma. Additionally, the seafood adds a sweet touch to the extremely flavourful deep duck soup.

SG_Forbidden Duck_Giant Egg Tart
Go big or go home, as they say; in this case, we went all the way with their Giant Egg Tart. Unlike egg tarts we’ve had anywhere else, this classic Hong Kong favourite gets an upsized makeover. A buttery crust cup encases wobbly, golden egg custard with sweet marmalade filling. With a dessert this satisfying, we can’t think of a better way to end the meal!

Luxuriate in Quality Chinese fare at Golden Peony

Chinese cuisines are a dime a dozen here in Singapore, which explains why locals are exceptionally particular when it comes to quality. One such restaurant that lives up to these expectations is Golden Peony, a beautiful establishment serving up decadent Chinese fare.

Golden Peony1
You’ll feel right at home when you first step into the modernly vast space, located on the 3rd level of the swanky Conrad Centennial Hotel. The warmly lit ambience and contemporary interiors ooze chic without being ostentatious, making it a perfect spot for friendly gatherings and intimate occasions. Classic Chinese dishes adorn the menu so you can expect the upgraded favourites including Sweet & Sour Pork and Stir-Fried French Bean.

Not convinced? We’ll help you out:

Something Succulent: Roast ‘London’ Duck

Roast ‘London’ Duck with Parma ham, crispy beancurd skin and pineapple roll with homemade crepes
A testament to Chef Ku’s impeccable skills is the Roast ‘London’ Duck (特色伦敦鸭两味) – a dish akin to Peking Duck but with a twist. Here, the duck is served two ways: first in a homemade crepe, then as is alongside condiments to complement it with.

We recommend first going for the former, where a pristine slice of roast duck with parma ham, pineapple, and crispy beancurd skin are ready to be rolled in a homemade crepe for your dining pleasure. If you prefer savouring the duck as is, the juicy slices of roast duck on the side will delight you. Don’t forget the spice dip for a little flavour boost!

A Little Bit of Warmth: Golden Double-boiled Seafood Soup in Mini Golden Pumpkin

Double-boiled New Caledonia ‘Obsiblue’ Prawn with Bamboo Pith and Conpoy in a Mini Pumpkin
Savour the essence of the sea with the Golden Double-boiled Seafood Soup in Mini Golden Pumpkin (金瓜盅炖海鲜汤). We beamed when this cheerful bowl of goodness brimming with seafood and all things delicious arrived at our table.

Each spoonful of broth immediately exudes depth and warmth, making it almost impossible not to love. Tuck in further and discover plump, fresh prawns, tender conpoy and more hidden treasures within.

From Up North: Baked Canadian Sea Perch with Red Wine Sauce

Baked Canadian sea perch with red wine sauce
Love fish? Then this Baked Canadian Sea Perch with Red Wine Sauce (红酒焗鲈鱼) is definitely up your alley. Enjoy simplicity at its finest as you bite into the gorgeously baked sea perch with the sweet and savoury red wine sauce. Fleshy and fragrant, the sea perch has a very clean flavour that works beautifully with the red wine sauce.

A Bowl of Indulgence: Stewed Lobster

Stewed Lobster with ginger, spring onion and egg gravy served with crispy egg noodle ball
More seafood goodness awaits as Golden Peony dishes out the indulgent Stewed Lobster with Ginger, Spring Onion, and Egg Gravy served with Crispy Egg Noodle Ball (姜葱滑蛋开边龙虾脆面球).

Chef Ku gets a little creative with the presentation as the succulent lobster is shown playing with the noodle ball in the sea of ‘egg-gravy’. Spoon the hot gravy over the crisp noodle to soften it before you dig in, and savour every mouthful with a bit of the lobster and gravy. Fun has never tasted this good!

Whether it’s a family feast you seek or an indulgent meal for two, the fine Chinese fare at this exquisite restaurant is sure to satisfy.

Find the Perfect Restaurant for Your Dad this Father’s Day

What “type” of dad do you have? If you don’t know, it’s time to find out – especially since Father’s Day is just around the corner! We’re going to introduce the 6 most common types of Singaporean dads, how to identify them, and what restaurants they’ll love. Let’s get started.

The Traditionalist

The Traditionalist

Description:

Your dad’s the go-to man for lessons on table manners, folklore, and how to address all those relatives you only see once a year or at weddings. He’s always prepared for festive occasions and is a huge stickler for the rules when it comes to cultural rituals.

A Restaurant He’ll Love:

A lavish yet tasteful restaurant, Summer Pavilion has a menu and ambience fit for a king. Chinese dishes are cooked with finesse and served with impeccable elegance, nestled in intricate, beautiful china. Treat your dad to an extravagant meal featuring impressive dishes like Bird’s Nest Dumplings, African Abalone, and King Scallops.

The Man of Simple Tastes

Man of Simple Tastes

Description:

Your dad’s never wanted anything fancy, and he’s far from picky. Easily content with the little pleasures in life and perpetually shocked by the increasingly over-the-top hipster food culture, he’d much rather lim kopi than go cafe-hopping.

A Restaurant He’ll Love:

The problem: his favourite food is hawker food. The solution: bring him to The Clifford Pier for a buffet of local delights! All the classic Singaporean bites will be there so your father can pile his plate full of Ondeh Ondeh, Popiah, and Satay. Unlimited hawker favourites cooked to perfection, and a complimentary Father’s Day dinner for Dad to boot – what’s not to love?

The Music Lover

The Music Lover

Description:

Your dad’s pet peeve is a low-quality sound system, which is why your house has a huge CD rack and a high-end stereo (or if he’s hip enough, a vinyl player). He’s also a closet pop star but only shows it when that song plays. You know which one we’re talking about.

A Restaurant He’ll Love:

Treat your dad to a luxurious night of great music and delicious food at Monti. This swanky venue doubles as a restaurant and a jazz lounge, serving up a harmonious blend of gourmet Italian bites, mellow Jazz tunes, and an amazing view. If jazz isn’t your father’s jam, then take a look at our live music guide to see if anything suits his fancy.

The Bottomless Pit

The Bottomless Pit

Description:

Your dad’s got a big appetite and he’s proud of it. When he’s around, there’s no such thing as ordering too much. Dad’s more than happy to eat up anything you can’t finish, and once he’s done with that, he’ll ask for the dessert menu.

A Restaurant He’ll Love:

It’s time to feast like a beast! Your dad’s monstrous appetite might just meet its match at The Beast. Specialising in Southern food and hospitality, the portions here are nothing if not generous, and oh-so-indulgent as well. He’ll adore the immensely satisfying burgers sporting thick, juicy patties, and the crispy buttermilk chicken that’s fried to sinful perfection.

The “It’s not spicy, trust me!”

The Spice Lover

Description:

Your dad could probably chow down on an entire bowl of chillies and still not break a sweat. A lover of all things spicy, it’s best to take his assurance that something isn’t spicy with a pinch of salt… and a glass of milk.

A restaurant he’ll love:

This hip Indian restaurant is a curry connoisseur’s dream! Zaffron’s extensive selection of curries, marinated meats, and sauces has won the restaurant a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2017, and with their spot-on spices, it’s not hard to see why. Grab Dad and head down to one of their two outlets for a tongue-tingling experience you won’t forget.

The Carnivore

The Carnivore

Description:

Your dad won’t feel full or satisfied unless he’s gotten a serving (maybe more) of juicy, meaty goodness. All he needs to be happy with his dinner is a nice, generous slab of steak – no extra frills required.

A restaurant he’ll love:

If there’s one place that does steaks right, it’s Opus Bar & Grill. A range of succulent seafood and meats are grilled to perfection, with a smoky flavour and gorgeous sear while remaining moist and tender inside. Your dad will especially adore the marvellously marbled steaks that just melt in your mouth, while seafood lovers can feast on sweet, fresh whole lobsters.

7 Must-Try Dim Sum Dishes at No Signboard Seafood

When we say ‘dim sum’, there are probably only a number of tea houses and dim sum restaurants that come to mind. But what if we told you that you can now add No Signboard Seafood to that list?

The popular seafood joint now offers an indulgent dim sum lunch at their Vivocity outlet daily, between 11am and 5pm. But of course, true to No Signboard fashion, these aren’t just your average dim sum selections! From global favourites to upgraded classics, here are some of our favourites from the menu that you definitely shouldn’t miss.

1. Signature Poached Pork Dumpling with Spicy Vinegar Sauce

Signature Pork Dumplings

If you’re looking at this dish and thinking “wow, these look like little pockets of explosions just waiting to happen”, you’re probably right! These pork dumplings are the stars of the dim sum lunch menu, and it’s easy to see why: proper dumplings tossed in a piquant vinegar-and-chilli sauce, these babies are perfect to start a meal with.

You might think it unwise to start off with a spicy dish but don’t let the fiery red dressing fool you! It’s mild in heat but packs a tangy punch that jump starts your appetite like no other. When you get to the heart of the dumpling, the succulent pork filling helps to round out the flavours, preparing you for more to come.

2. Pan-fried Carrot Cake with Taro Shreds

Carrot Cake with Taro Shreds

If you think that you’re going to get a traditional carrot cake, think again. No Signboard Seafood takes this local favourite and elevates it in more ways than one. The first thing that draws you in is the contrast in textures, where a crisp upper layer of shaved taro sits upon a dense, pan-fried block. Take a bite, and experience the crunch followed by silky carrot cake that pretty much melts in your mouth.

Just when you think that that’s the most impressive part of the carrot cake, its robustness takes you by surprise. The generous helping of dried shrimp adds depth to the dish, giving it a flavour profile unlike any other you’ve had elsewhere. But don’t just take our word for it – try it for yourself!

3. Steamed Egg Yolk Custard Charcoal Bun

Custard Charcoal Bun

Nothing says ‘classy chic’ like these Custard Charcoal Buns! Even if you don’t usually order custard buns, these bad boys will have you tempted. Made with premium charcoal flour and adorned with a golden swirl on top, this is probably the sexiest looking custard buns we’ve ever come across.

Steamed to pillowy perfection, your next instinct is to probably bite into them but we strongly suggest to break them into half instead to avoid burning your mouth with its piping hot filling. Plus, it’s more gratifying to watch as the golden savoury liquid ooze out and coat the buns before tucking in. We assure you.

4. Seafood Crisp Rice

Seafood Crisp Rice

Feeling a little down in the dumps? Then this bowl of comfort is just what the doctor ordered. Heartwarming and delicious, it’s a nice respite between dim sum dishes as well. There’s just something soothing about the mellow broth made from chicken and seafood that goes well with the generous heap of prawns, scallops, and more.

Plus, the crispy rice adds crunch with every mouthful that, over time, soaks up the broth and turns into an inviting bowl of porridge that you can just devour by the mouthful.

5. Steamed Shanghai Juicy “Xiao Long Bao”

Shanghai Xiao Long Bao

We all know that this hot number needs no introduction. Just imagining these delicate little pouches breaking apart and revealing its juicy, meaty treasures are making our mouths water!

While plain in appearance, the dumplings are noticeably larger than most. The savoury-sweet broth leaves you craving more too. Bursting with intensity, we guarantee that you won’t be forgetting these dumplings anytime soon. Another basket, please!

6. Steamed Royal Shrimps Dumpling with Celery

Shrimp Dumpling with Celery

Everyone loves a good ‘har gaw’, but have you ever had one that looks this good? Made to look like little gleaming gems in a basket, this is probably the best way to get your little ones to have their greens. By adding celery into the dumpling skin, it adds a quirky twist to this long-time favourite.

And don’t worry if you’re not a fan of celery; the vegetable only imparts its bright green hue to the skin and not its flavour. With its springy prawn filling, this fan-favourite is done exactly the same way you remembered it to be.

7. Chef’s Special Skewer Grill Pork “Siew Mai”

Siew Mai Skewers

Why serve siew mai in a bamboo steamer when you can have them in one go on a bamboo skewer? And these aren’t your average Siew Mai either: No Signboard puts them through a skewer and onto a grill, enhancing its flavours tenfold.

Lathered with a luscious sauce and topped with bonito flakes, it’s reminiscent of the Japanese takoyaki which we’re sure you’ll love. Each siew mai is packed with minced pork, prawn, and mushrooms, so you know you’re definitely getting an umami bomb every time. Oishii-desu!

If you didn’t already know, you can get up to 20% off your food bill when you purchase No Signboard Seafood time-based discounted vouchers to dine between 11am and 4pm daily!

1. Original Sin

Mediterranean WrapPasta

This Lorong Mambong staple — it’s more than 20 years old — consistently serves up delish Mediterranean dishes with an Italian vibe. The best part? It’s vegetarian, and some recipes can even be vegan or gluten-free. The Moussaka (eggplant-meat casserole) is a classic, but if you are craving something rich (but waistline-friendly), try the Zucca Fettuccine, or zucchini pasta. Don’t forget to check out the lunch deals, which make a trip here hard to resist.

#SupportLocal by dining in this latest offering from the Hilton, where the half the menu features local and sustainably sourced ingredients. Eat salads, soups and mains packed with superfoods like kale and pomegranate. We like the Avocado Composition, which shines the spotlight on a hearty avocado dressing over tangy grapefruit, heirloom tomatoes and couscous. On cheat days, we’d opt for the Super Food Grilled Haloumi, reassured that even then, it’s not that bad for our calorie intake.

Say ‘vegetarian’, and Westernised salads and cold cuts come to mind. But there are days when we just want warm and hearty food, the kind that reminds us of our grandmother hovering over stoves, making our favourite dishes. Lingzhi does just that: the meat might be fake but the tastiness is real. The best part is that the recently revamped restaurant doesn’t rely on additives or gluten to give us texture; the chefs now emphasise organic, fresh ingredients to pack in that flavour. If you don’t believe us, try the Peking Duck or Lasagna and see for yourself!

For the health-conscious mum

The Garden Interior.jpg
photo-2.jpg

Does your mum watch what she (and the rest of the family) eats? Does she wrap up your KFC in kitchen towels to absorb as much oil as possible before she lets you sink your teeth into a chicken thigh, or hound you to take your daily vitamins? If your mum is the sort who is game to try new things, why not take her to NOX, Singapore’s only dine-in-the-dark restaurant. Here you will rely on your remaining senses to savour the food in a pitch black room and spend some real quality time (without the distraction of handphones) with mum! The menu is a three-course mystery meal comprising 12 dishes, though there will also be a complimentary glass of sparkling wine – one less surprise there.

Each set is $88++, but mothers dine free with every three paying guests. The promotion is on 13 May, at 11.30am or 6pm.

For the no-nonsense mum

Maybe your mum’s a classic Asian tiger mum — curfews, few indulgences, and administering discipline (read: the cane) when it came to finishing homework. Hopefully, you’re a well-adjusted adult today, but chances are Mum is still her stoic, sensible self. Take her to Ryu’s, a sushi bar dedicated to delivering good food and great sake, for a solid, no-frills meal. The set is $128++ for two, with sake add-ons at $30++ per pax. Mum would approve.

Find it at 15 Stamford Road #01-87, Capitol Piazza, Singapore 178906.
