5. Samy’s Curry Restaurant

Samys Curry.jpg
Cr: sg.asia-city.com

Located in a colonial building, Samy’s Curry Restaurant has been serving its famous fish head curry for more than 50 years. The décor looks a little like a canteen that’s stuck in time, but the diners that constantly pack this restaurant aren’t there to fill their Instagram feed with pictures (even though we won’t fault you if you snap a few photos). They keep coming back because Samy’s offers hearty Indian food at an affordable price.

Once you’re seated, you’ll get a banana leaf and some utensils. However, we suggest going sans spoon for the full experience. Next comes a scoop of rice you have a choice of white or briyani and a serving of vegetables and dhal, before you receive whatever sides and mains you have ordered. We recommend the Fish Head Curry, the Mysore Mutton, and the intriguingly tasty Fish Cutlet (think of it as a fish begedil).

Find it at 25 Dempsey Road, Singapore 249670.
Click here for more information about Samy’s Curry.

6. The Song of India

If you’d like to try their luxurious take on Indian cuisine, they’ve got options like Lobster Moily (whole lobster pan seared in lemon and marinated with a delicate coconut milk based sauce) and Star Spiced Foie Gras (pan seared foie gras spiced with star anise masala).

If you think that all curries are heavy and food coma-inducing, then Tandoor’s summery stews will be a huge eye-opener. It goes extremely well with a serving of steamed Basmati rice, and is also a perfect accompaniment to heavier dishes like the Bhatti Ka Murgh (Tandoori Chicken) or succulent Fish Goan Curry. Their open kitchen is also a nice touch. Watch the fascinating display of their chefs’ culinary prowess, as they prepare your food in gigantic tandoor ovens.

Find the Perfect Restaurant for Your Dad this Father’s Day

What “type” of dad do you have? If you don’t know, it’s time to find out – especially since Father’s Day is just around the corner! We’re going to introduce the 6 most common types of Singaporean dads, how to identify them, and what restaurants they’ll love. Let’s get started.

The Traditionalist

The Traditionalist

Description:

Your dad’s the go-to man for lessons on table manners, folklore, and how to address all those relatives you only see once a year or at weddings. He’s always prepared for festive occasions and is a huge stickler for the rules when it comes to cultural rituals.

A Restaurant He’ll Love:

A lavish yet tasteful restaurant, Summer Pavilion has a menu and ambience fit for a king. Chinese dishes are cooked with finesse and served with impeccable elegance, nestled in intricate, beautiful china. Treat your dad to an extravagant meal featuring impressive dishes like Bird’s Nest Dumplings, African Abalone, and King Scallops.

The Man of Simple Tastes

Man of Simple Tastes

Description:

Your dad’s never wanted anything fancy, and he’s far from picky. Easily content with the little pleasures in life and perpetually shocked by the increasingly over-the-top hipster food culture, he’d much rather lim kopi than go cafe-hopping.

A Restaurant He’ll Love:

The problem: his favourite food is hawker food. The solution: bring him to The Clifford Pier for a buffet of local delights! All the classic Singaporean bites will be there so your father can pile his plate full of Ondeh Ondeh, Popiah, and Satay. Unlimited hawker favourites cooked to perfection, and a complimentary Father’s Day dinner for Dad to boot – what’s not to love?

The Music Lover

The Music Lover

Description:

Your dad’s pet peeve is a low-quality sound system, which is why your house has a huge CD rack and a high-end stereo (or if he’s hip enough, a vinyl player). He’s also a closet pop star but only shows it when that song plays. You know which one we’re talking about.

A Restaurant He’ll Love:

Treat your dad to a luxurious night of great music and delicious food at Monti. This swanky venue doubles as a restaurant and a jazz lounge, serving up a harmonious blend of gourmet Italian bites, mellow Jazz tunes, and an amazing view. If jazz isn’t your father’s jam, then take a look at our live music guide to see if anything suits his fancy.

The Bottomless Pit

The Bottomless Pit

Description:

Your dad’s got a big appetite and he’s proud of it. When he’s around, there’s no such thing as ordering too much. Dad’s more than happy to eat up anything you can’t finish, and once he’s done with that, he’ll ask for the dessert menu.

A Restaurant He’ll Love:

It’s time to feast like a beast! Your dad’s monstrous appetite might just meet its match at The Beast. Specialising in Southern food and hospitality, the portions here are nothing if not generous, and oh-so-indulgent as well. He’ll adore the immensely satisfying burgers sporting thick, juicy patties, and the crispy buttermilk chicken that’s fried to sinful perfection.

The “It’s not spicy, trust me!”

The Spice Lover

Description:

Your dad could probably chow down on an entire bowl of chillies and still not break a sweat. A lover of all things spicy, it’s best to take his assurance that something isn’t spicy with a pinch of salt… and a glass of milk.

A restaurant he’ll love:

This hip Indian restaurant is a curry connoisseur’s dream! Zaffron’s extensive selection of curries, marinated meats, and sauces has won the restaurant a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2017, and with their spot-on spices, it’s not hard to see why. Grab Dad and head down to one of their two outlets for a tongue-tingling experience you won’t forget.

The Carnivore

The Carnivore

Description:

Your dad won’t feel full or satisfied unless he’s gotten a serving (maybe more) of juicy, meaty goodness. All he needs to be happy with his dinner is a nice, generous slab of steak – no extra frills required.

A restaurant he’ll love:

If there’s one place that does steaks right, it’s Opus Bar & Grill. A range of succulent seafood and meats are grilled to perfection, with a smoky flavour and gorgeous sear while remaining moist and tender inside. Your dad will especially adore the marvellously marbled steaks that just melt in your mouth, while seafood lovers can feast on sweet, fresh whole lobsters.

Mediterranean WrapPasta

This Lorong Mambong staple — it’s more than 20 years old — consistently serves up delish Mediterranean dishes with an Italian vibe. The best part? It’s vegetarian, and some recipes can even be vegan or gluten-free. The Moussaka (eggplant-meat casserole) is a classic, but if you are craving something rich (but waistline-friendly), try the Zucca Fettuccine, or zucchini pasta. Don’t forget to check out the lunch deals, which make a trip here hard to resist.

#SupportLocal by dining in this latest offering from the Hilton, where the half the menu features local and sustainably sourced ingredients. Eat salads, soups and mains packed with superfoods like kale and pomegranate. We like the Avocado Composition, which shines the spotlight on a hearty avocado dressing over tangy grapefruit, heirloom tomatoes and couscous. On cheat days, we’d opt for the Super Food Grilled Haloumi, reassured that even then, it’s not that bad for our calorie intake.

Say ‘vegetarian’, and Westernised salads and cold cuts come to mind. Lingzhi does just that: the meat might be fake but the tastiness is real. The best part is that the recently revamped restaurant doesn’t rely on additives or gluten to give us texture; the chefs now emphasise organic, fresh ingredients to pack in that flavour. If you don’t believe us, try the Peking Duck or Lasagna and see for yourself!

This hip, halal and health-conscious joint in Little India offers rice bowls with a South Asian spin. Having an Instaworthy cafe with its semi-industrial vibe doesn’t hurt either. Gunther’s does not disappoint, with an elegant interior featuring luxury furniture and Art-Noveau decor. The highlight here, however, is the delicious food. Reviewers have raved about the award-winning Cold Angel Hair Pasta, and juicy Carpaccio of Wagyu Beef, and we know someone who comes here specifically for their delicious butter and bread. Nestled in a quaint shophouse and located conveniently between Bugis and City Hall, there’s simply nothing to dislike about Gunther’s fancy French done right!

Arguably the jewel in the crown of One Fullerton, this two Michelin star eatery is an intimate, 14-seater sushi spot serving up authentic Japanese gems. Think minimal wood seats paired with subtle taupe tones and sublime eats and you’ve got the right picture. The cooked dishes are excellent, but the true superstars of the menu are the raw seafood. 3. The Tavern Restaurant

We’re not saying this is the fanciest place out there, but what it lacks in grandiose flourishes, it makes up for in taste. This simple shophouse may not seem like much at first glance, but don’t let the unassuming exterior and rustic interior (we’re talking European cabin-style decor here) fool you – the service and food are top-notch. They’ve got plenty of European delights from land and sea, including Angel Hair Pasta With Lobster, plump escargots, that tough-to-find Raclette, and more. We’re pretty partial to their selection of wagyu ourselves. Located on a cosy stretch of River Valley Road, and with quick, unobtrusive service, this place will surprise you in all the best ways.

This saucy spot in Tanjong Pagar offers a range of flavours – from Original for the faint-hearted to Hot and Spicy for the daredevils out there. If the flaming red colour of the dish isn’t enough to faze you, venture a bite and you’ll find yourself wanting to gulp down water by the gallons just seconds in. 4. LongQing – Ma La

Szechuan cuisine is known to be one of the spiciest cuisines in the orient. Famed for their liberal use of chilli and pepper, this cuisine is home to the Ma La hotpot. Made with numbing Szechuan pepper and lots of chilli, a whiff of this dish will have you reaching for the tissues. One of the spiciest Ma La hotpots in Singapore is located at LongQing, where MSG isn’t used to mask the spiciness of the soup base. The premium meat offerings such as Angus Beef and Pork Shoulder offer some respite from the heat, but if it’s a spicy soup you’re after, you might have just found it.

Dig deeper and you’ll be ambushed by a strings of sliced chilli and spicy sauce. The tavern has a “Spaghetti From Hell Challenge” which gets eaters to chow down the dish in less than 10 minutes without the aid of water or any other beverages. Think you’re brave enough? If you’re a fan of Mexican food, you’ll love Lower East Side Tacqueria’s menu. Spice lovers will enjoy their Spicy Taco challenge even more. Finish a taco of your choice with their searing Level 5 Hot Sauce drizzled on top, and it’s on the house. The staff say anything above Level 3 is dangerous, and unsurprisingly, the innocent-looking sauce packs a serious punch, comprising a mix of peppers and chilli. Every weekend, brave souls attempt this challenge, fuelled my tequila and horchata, but few succeed. Are you game enough to taco on the challenge?

Finish a plate of their wings and your meal is on the house – you can recruit up to two people to join in your suffering. Be warned, however, these wings have gained notoriety for being the “spiciest wings in Singapore” and are a force to be reckoned with. If scorching heat and “spice tears” are your thing, then this challenge is definitely for you.
