In the day, customise your quick serve protein bowls that you could enjoy for lunch. At nightfall, see the space transform into a hang-out spot serving up yummy plates, from meats to a variety of vegetables, healthy grains and all-vegan desserts!

With the belief for affordable and conscious-eating, the extensive range of vegan options caught our eye. We’re talking Garden Ragu Fettuccine made from a house-made specialty Beyond Meat™ ragu sauce, Barley Mushroom Risotto, and more!

One of the newest restaurants along Bukit Pasoh Road, Beurre is helmed by head chef Darwin Wong, who built a modern and innovative French menu for the restaurant. Much thought was put into the menu, and the best part? Beautifully plated dishes at affordable prices!

Beurre is butter in French, and it is an important ingredient in the kitchen at this restaurant. The highlights in its menu includes the 10-day Butter-aged Angus Ribeye, and the Portebello Mushroom Tart with leek cream and poached eggs.

Sundays with Les Bouchons’ New Brunch Menu

Rise and shine, folks. It’s time for some Sunday brunching! Come with your family or friends for the new Bouchons Riviera Brunch, the perfect perk-me-up on a lazy Sunday.

Les Bouchons was established in 2002, with its first opening at Ann Siang Hill. The Robertson Quay outlet boasts a similar French bistro vibe and with the added charm of the French Riviera, comes the name Les Bouchons Rive Gauche. Helmed by French Chef Mickael Cornac, guests can expect a truly authentic dining experience that’s rooted in Parisian culture and flavour. Bubbly and amicable, Chef Mickael spoke with such gusto for every dish, throwing in nibbles of fun facts, for a little behind-the-scenes look at the concoction of the beautiful plates before our eyes.

Launched last April, Bouchons Rivera Brunch is served only at its Robertson Quay outlet. The menu, creatively-inspired by the French Riviera, is the brand’s first-ever attempt at brunch. And dare we say, it was a pretty, darn good brunch!

For starters, give a shot at the Eggs Mimosa and Escargot de Bourgogne. The former is more commonly known as Devil’s Eggs — a creamy mousse of eggs accompanied by garlic-sauteed asparagus for an extra bite. With the clever addition of dashes of mustard and lemon juice, the eggy rendition is flavourful and a rightfully delightful starter.

Eggs Mimosa $14++

Another great way to ease yourselves into the mains would be Les Bouchons’ signature escargots. The French delicacy is served with warm, toasted breads from French bakery Paul, great for moping up the deliciously addictive garlic-parsley butter. Psst, Chef Mickael is pretty generous with seconds too!

Escargot de Bourgogne $16++

Moving on to the mains, you’ll be glad you came in groups! The serving is exceptionally generous, great for sharing. From nutritious bowls to hearty roasts, there’s definitely something for everyone!

Starting off with the health-conscious, this one’s for you. The Wellness Bowl is the perfect blend of textures and flavours — crunchy granola, honey yoghurt, tea-soaked goji berries, fresh bananas, chia seeds, and get this, balsamic-infused strawberries! The infusion lends a surprisingly tangy twist to the sweet fruit that refreshes your palate.

Riviera Wellness Bowl $18++

For a savoury healthy option, go for the Guele de Bois. Quipped as Bouchons Hangover Cure, this is another great bowl of goodness. Colourful and decadent, the dish boasts the highly raved ‘Impossible’ meatballs, strong scents of truffle oil with creamy scrambled eggs, and sides of juicy roasted cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, and asparagus. The meatballs exude a slightly sweet undertone, bringing out the truffled eggs really well in a nice pairing.

Gueule de Bois (Bouchons Hangover Cure) $24++

For carnivores, fret not! Meet the meats. Bouchons Sunday Roast will have you drooling at the sight of the glorious meaty delight. For the roast, there is a weekly rotation between meats like quail and slow-cooked short ribs. For our visit, we were treated to the amazing 10-hour slow-cooked short ribs. Unbelievably fragrant, the beef was infused beautifully with rosemary, garlic, and thyme — simply melt-in-your-mouth umaminess. Meltingly-tender, the roast is gastronomically worth every single calorie and penny.

Remember to call in advance to see if your favourite is available for the coming Sunday brunch!

Bouchons Sunday Roast $32++

If it’s your first time at Les Bouchons, then you’ve got to try the Grilled Black Angus Rib Eye Steak. A Les Bouchons mainstay, be prepared to fall in love with the succulent yet still delicately-tender cut, complete with free-flow house-made fries! The vigneron (shallot and mustard) butter is slathered all over the meat, giving the 300g steak an added richness. It’s no wonder that the juicy cut remains a best-selling crowd favourite till this day.

Grilled Black Angus Rib Eye Steak $39.80++

As brunch winds down, end off your Sunday outing on a sweet note. Chef Mickael has whipped up desserts with just as much passion as the City of Love. Bite into the decadent Chocolate Brownie, served warm and contrasted against the cool vanilla ice-cream atop. Made with 66% dark chocolates, rest assured that the fudgy dessert won’t be cloyingly sweet.

Chocolate Brownie “Fait Maison” $10++

Another Les Bouchons favourite, the Creme Brulee will steal the hearts of sweet-lovers. Velvety-smooth without the eggy custard taste, the rendition here is invigorated with a slight citrusy hint, courtesy of the creative Chef Mickael. Scoop a spoonful of that smokey, caramelised brown sugar coating and you’ll soon be in French heaven. Other dessert options include the Crepe, with choices of Nutella, fine sugar, banana, or honey — great for the little ones.

Creme Brulee “Fait Maison” $12++
Crepes $8++

If you woke up feeling hungry, head down to Les Bouchons Rive Gauche for a Riviera brunch that won’t disappoint. Sunday brunching starts from 11.30am – 3.30pm in the afternoon.

Find it at 60 Robertson Quay, #01-02, Singapore 238252

Taste the King of all Lobsters at Rech by Alan Ducasse

Eng |

The blue lobster is perhaps the king of all lobsters, fresher and sweeter than the rest. Get a bite of these sensational crustaceans at Rech by Alain Ducasse, which has series of new menus featuring the seasonal French blue lobsters. You can taste the fruits of the sea from southern France without having to leave Hong Kong!

We love the Crazy Blue Lobster Menu (available now till 31 August). How could you resist the Decadent Lobster Soufflé for two? The traditional French dish has generous chunks of lobster meat and a rich lobster broth, made with fresh blue lobsters shipped daily from Brittany. It’s not every day you see this dish in Hong Kong, much less one of such fantastic quality, so make sure you don’t miss it!

DSCF0723_1

Before starting on the Soufflé, create a hole in the centre and pour in the lobster broth, which fills the souffle with a rich, creamy flavour. You’ll also find plenty of delicious lobster meat at the bottom of the dish.

Another great dish is the Blue Lobster and Courgette Flowers-Taggiasca Olives from the signature menu. A generous serving of grilled blue lobster sits on a bed of mashed zucchini.

DSCF0700_1

The grilled blue lobster is served with grilled and mashed Violin Zucchini, a special French variety which grows only in Provence during the summer. The zucchini skins are stuffed with the lobster and mashed zucchini, along with olives, ginger, basil, and deep-fried zucchini flowers. Finally, a dash of olive powder enhance the flavours and brings the dish together.

【米芝蓮餐廳夏日限定  來自法國南部的藍龍蝦盛宴】

Eng |

The Japanese restaurant with a contemporary French twist in Causeway Bay

Eng |

 Located at the heart of bustling Causeway Bay, La Bombance is famous for its sumptuous kaiseki experience that melds a variety of cuisines together. The original Tokyo restaurant has been awarded a Michelin star for a whopping nine consecutive years and this standard carries through to the Hong Kong outpost.

Like any good kaiseki meal, you can bet on a series of beautiful dishes created using fresh seasonal produce. But if you’re expecting the old-school version, think again! La Bombance’s menu features traditional classics with a subtle French twist and each mini work of art is elegant without being too pretentious.

DSCF0254_2500
Charcoal Grilled Dried Hokkaido Kinki Set

We recommend heading down during lunch if you’re pressed for time or lack the stomach space for 10 courses. Opt for the Charcoal Grilled Dried Hokkaido Kinki Set – gentle whiffs of this feast hit your nose as you exit the elevator to La Bombance – and savour a fish that’s delicately crispy on the outside with firm flesh within. Each order comes with a slew of the usual sides including Japanese rice, miso soup, and dessert. For a touch of luxury, indulge in the Steamed Egg Custard with Perigord Truffle; the contrast between the silky soft custard and the crunch bits of rice sprinkled on top is a real treat.

DSCF0214
Mini Kaiseiki Set (Reservation only): Sakizuke Deep-fried langoustine in Kadaif style /Grilled rice ball topped with Unagi in Kabayaki style / Sweet corn mousse

DSCF0220_2500
Mini Kaiseiki Set (Reservation only): Onmono Pan-seared foie gras served with Kamonasu, beef tartar, summer truffle and balsamic vinegar sauce

The Mini Kaiseiki Set is another crowd favourite. Designed to reflect the seasons, this is six courses that taste and look amazing. Keep an eye, or tastebud, out for the sauces. Chef Okamoto brings the French sensibility for perfectly-balanced, complex sauces to an otherwise traditional Japanese spread. It’s these nuances that take La Bombance to another level.

During the day, the restaurant is awash in light, streaming in from the full-height glass panels, all the better to bring warmth to the wooden touches and modern elements decorating the space. With both world-class kaiseki and breathtaking views of Victoria Harbour, La Bombance is nothing short of spectacular.

Raymond Blanc

Here’s an inspirational story for all our aspiring chefs: French culinary legend Raymond Blanc is completely self-taught! We’re serious – the man who’s won both an honourary Order of the British Empire and the insignia of Chevalier in the Ordre National de La Légion d’Honneur (the highest French decoration) for his prowess in the kitchen has never had an ounce of official training. Forget Wolverine, this guy’s origin story is the craziest we’ve ever heard.

Jumping forty-six years into the future, he’s now the most respected chef in the world, with several Michelin-starred restaurants under his belt. The jewel in his crown is undoubtedly Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, which has earned and kept 2 Michelin stars for three decades.

For the first time in twenty-two years, Chef Raymond Blanc is back for the World Gourmet Summit, where he’ll be hosting a masterclass and cooking up a storm of French delights you won’t want to miss.

5 Fancy Places to Spend Your Angpao Loot

Now that you’ve raked in some money from the red packets, it’s time to treat yo’ self! Here are five (non-Chinese, don’t worry) fancy places to splash that cash.

bg_jan13_01

1. Gunther’s

Any French food connoisseur will tell you that the ambience of a restaurant can make or break it. Gunther’s does not disappoint, with an elegant interior featuring luxury furniture and Art-Noveau decor. The highlight here, however, is the delicious food. Reviewers have raved about the award-winning Cold Angel Hair Pasta, and juicy Carpaccio of Wagyu Beef, and we know someone who comes here specifically for their delicious butter and bread. Nestled in a quaint shophouse and located conveniently between Bugis and City Hall, there’s simply nothing to dislike about Gunther’s fancy French done right!

Find it at 36 Purvis Street #01-03 Singapore (188613)

Shoukouwa-Jyunsai

2. Shoukouwa Sushi Restaurant

Arguably the jewel in the crown of One Fullerton, this two Michelin star eatery is an intimate, 14-seater sushi spot serving up authentic Japanese gems. Think minimal wood seats paired with subtle taupe tones and sublime eats and you’ve got the right picture. The cooked dishes are excellent, but the true superstars of the menu are the raw seafood. With ingredients flown in from Tsukiji Market daily, if you’re craving some great Edomae sushi omakase or looking for elegant Japanese fare, this is the place for you!

3. The Tavern Restaurant

We’re not saying this is the fanciest place out there, but what it lacks in grandiose flourishes, it makes up for in taste. This simple shophouse may not seem like much at first glance, but don’t let the unassuming exterior and rustic interior (we’re talking European cabin-style decor here) fool you – the service and food are top-notch. They’ve got plenty of European delights from land and sea, including Angel Hair Pasta With Lobster, plump escargots, that tough-to-find Raclette, and more. We’re pretty partial to their selection of wagyu ourselves. Located on a cosy stretch of River Valley Road, and with quick, unobtrusive service, this place will surprise you in all the best ways.

4. Yhingthai Palace Restaurant

Lovers of jazzed up Thai food should put Yhingthai Palace on their lists. Just a couple of doors down from Gunther’s, this Bib Gourmand eatery serves up authentic and flavourful nosh in an ornate setting. The food here definitely comes with the signature ‘kick’ that Thai food fanatics are so fond of, and the sight of a table filled with these aromatic masterpieces will get your mouth watering for sure. For a wide array of Thai and Chinese dishes, this is place is ideal if you and your friends can’t settle on just one cuisine to have for dinner.

In The Pantry: Chef Harry Cummins of Paris Popup

Following our exceptional Parisian village experience at Open Farm Community last week, we managed to catch Chef Harry Cummins of Paris Popup for a quick chat as he lets us rummage through his pantry and discover the person behind the kitchen.

The one ingredient that’s always in your pantry is…
Fleur de sel de Camargue and Vinegar.

One food trend you think is underrated?
Steaming.

What’s your favourite kitchen tool and why?
Metal pique for testing when meats, vegetables, and fish are cooked.

That one unforgettable meal you still think about today is…
My first meal at Noma in 2010.

Chef Harry Cummins @ OFC
What’s one cooking myth you wish everyone would stop believing?
That being a chef is an easy, glamorous life – it’s not and it has never been. It’s a lot of hard work and back-breaking hours; if you’re not 100% passionate then it’s best to stick to your day job.

The best city or country for food is…
Paris, Montréal, and Japan.

Fine-dining or street food?
Definitely street food. I find that it is always the best way to get close to the folks on the ground and their cultures.

A dish you crave during days where you don’t feel like cooking?
Beef Stew

An interesting fact about yourself would be…?
My middle name is Ziggy and my parents were punks.

If you weren’t a chef, what would you be?
A painter.

Do you have a kitchen horror story to share?
Too many! I was once shouted at for leaving a piece of cling film on a foie gras terrine.

Catch Chef Harry and the award-winning culinary collective Paris Popup at their three-week takeover “Kampong French” at Open Farm Community from now until 3rd December 2017. Serving an all-day dining menu and “feed me” menu for lunch and dinner daily, diners can look forward to exclusively curated plates that bring out the best and brightest flavours of this season’s produce.

Bistro du Vin

Nestled in hip and quaint Kennedy Town, Bistro du Vin has been a convivial addition to the up-and-coming neighborhood. Located in peaceful Taikoo Shing, Eiffel Bistro is quickly positioning itself as the place for either an upscale business lunch or a more chill family soirée. We love Eiffel’s Parisian-style bistro, open kitchen, and wide, people-watching windows and artwork, inspired by the iconic Eiffel tower.

Eiffel’s menu is a bit more diverse than other classic French bistros on our list. Inclusive of additions such as fishes, meats and sharing platters, Eiffel Bistro’s a la carte offerings are definitely fit for anyone’s taste. We love Eiffel’s Homemade Duck Foie Gras, which include two generous pieces of perfectly cooked liver coupled with seasonal chutney and crispy toast. Eiffel’s Classic Lobster Bisque – creamy and buttery goodness with massive chunks of succulent lobster – is not to be missed. Be sure to try their Seared Tuna Steak (jet-fresh tuna perfectly charred coupled with crunchy bacon bites) and Eiffel’s signature Rib-eye Steak. Les Fils à Maman

Named after four childhood friends who decided to bring back the good old recipes they enjoyed so much during their childhood, Les Fils à Maman serves up simple homemade classics their French mothers used to cook them everyday.

We love the Obelix & Asterix references, and the adorable childhood pictures of the co-founders of the restaurant, found in Les Fils’ rustic menu. It’s certainly something unique, and different vis-à-vis other restaurants that we had the pleasure of visiting.  We love the outrageous value found within Les Fils’ lunch menu, including dishes such as Fried Spices Babybel Croquettes, Raw & Smoked Salmon Rilletes as well as Fish of the Day and Seasonal Pot. What’s more, most French degustations at Les Fils are under $200! As an added bonus, we dig their tastefully designed interior; it’s reminiscent of the rustic chateaus off in France’s Burgundy region and costs waaaay less than a plane ticket to France.
