The 8 Best Brunches in Singapore

The 8 Best Brunches in Singapore

written by Rachel Ho March 26, 2018July 5, 2018

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but we can’t all wake up at 8am on weekends, which is exactly the reason why brunches were created. Sadly, they’ve also been labelled the basic b*tch equivalent of meals, associated with overpriced eggs, funky-smelling hollandaise sauce, and annoying micro-influencers trying to get that flat-lay for their Instagram.

We shortlist our favourite brunch places that capture a range of budgets, and most importantly, the way to your stomach.

The Populus Coffee & Food Co.

Populus InteriorPopulus-0023-2
This cafe makes hauling yourself to the Central Business District on a weekend worth it, with its top-notch breakfast servings and super tasty drinks. (We are partial to the Avocado Superfood Green Platter, their seasonal donburis and their made-on-the-spot smoothies.) Despite being around since late 2015, the queues still persist but the food is worth the wait. Thankfully, you can make a reservation here.

Atlas Coffeehouse

This middle-child cafe – its older and younger sisters are the now-defunct Assembly Coffee and Lunar Coffee Brewers in Shenton Way – located in Bukit Timah consistently serves great food and fantastic coffee. It’s the perfect pitstop, whether it’s after a walk through the Botanic Gardens or you need a place to wait for your kids/spouse/friend. In claustrophobic Singapore, the high ceilings provide a much-needed breather, and the staff never stop smiling despite the crowds.

A must-try: the Summer Chicken Stew, which is especially delicious on rainy days.

The Bakery by Woodlands Sourdough

We are reluctant to trumpet this place any more than necessary: seats are few and far between, and weekend crowds start to build up at 8.30am on the dot when it opens. But it is, arguably, the best place in Singapore to go for your sourdough fix.

We love their Sunday spin on Bialys, a Polish pastry they present with chopped onions, cheddar, and cracked eggs. Another favourite is the Rye Strawberry Balsamic Brownie, a sinful conclusion to a great breakfast. No meats served here, but that’s because these guys know that bread is their forte. Go early.

Yan Ting

Lobster Wok-fried Rice with Homemade XO SauceYan Ting Dim Sum Selection
This place isn’t cheap – prices range from $65++ to $188++, depending on whether they are set menus and you get alcohol – but the quality is assured. After all, haven’t we all braced the queue for a dim sum place that just didn’t live up to the hype? The char siew paus here melt in your mouth and don’t forget to check what special dishes are on offer.

Manhattan

Manhattan Chicken & WafflesManhattan Shrimp Ceviche Tacos
Brunching at one of the top 10 bars in the world means throwing out your arvo avo and eggs benedict cliches out of the window. Here we’re talking fresh oysters, ceviches, pastrami and cheese, foie gras. And we haven’t even started on the best part yet: free-flow cocktails, craft beers, and wine. It will certainly be several hours of indulgence. Bring your A-game!

Pacamara

This corner-occupying joint along Upper Thomson is perfect for those looking for something a little more substantial, like a juicy duck confit hash or a richly marinated pulled pork sandwich. Seats here are spread across long tables, canteen-style, so you don’t have to wait too long to dine here. We also love their extensive drinks menu, which features over 30 craft beers, in-house roasted coffee, and enough tea flavours to find something you like.

Fresh Fruits Lab

Brunch here is more affordable than most, with dishes ranging from $13 to $17. It’s also got the charming, laidback vibe that permeates the East Coast, which makes you feel you can relax and savour each bite. Our favourite part about the lab, though, are their delicious, cold-pressed juices.

Symmetry

We’ve been here for brunch, lunch, and dinner a few times and the guys running this place always manage to keep things fresh. Here there are starters (if you’re gunning for something new, why not try the Crab, Sweet Corn and Scallion Fritters), mains, AND desserts (we applaud the half-portion size they have for their berry-ful waffles). If that isn’t an all-rounded meal, we don’t know what is.
