Uncle Kiisu takes Omakase to a whole new level

Many of us are know what Omakase is, but Uncle Kiisu brings it to a whole new level, offering Japanese dishes infused with Peranakan flavours. Oh my god, say what? Uncle Kiisu is offering a 1-for-1 special on their #OhMyGutsSay 8-course omakase menu this month. Every course is an element of surprise, yet evokes a sense of familiarity with its local twist. This Chope Exclusives special is only available in August, so start booking away with the promo code CE8UK!

Chicken Rice Musubi & Nasi Lemak Musubi

Chicken Rice Musubi & Nasi Lemak Musubi 2

Just when you think you know sushi, think again: embrace your inner Singaporean with the Chicken Rice Musubi and Nasi Lemak Musubi, where Japanese favourites come grain-to-grain with locally-inspired flavours. They may look like your usual sushi but one bite is enough to convince you that these babies are local, through and through. The flavours of the chicken rice with chilli sauce and the taste of sambal, otah, and Nasi Lemak are unmistakable and, dare we say it, endearing.

Mentaiko Cheese Bruschetta

Mentaiko Cheese Bruschetta_2

If you’re familiar with bruschetta, you’ll know to expect a slice of grilled bread rubbed with garlic and topped with freshly chopped tomatoes and olive oil. At Uncle Kiisu, however, you’re treated to a localised take on the Italian favourite: their Mentaiko Cheese Bruschetta is served as a crispy you tiao or dough fritter that’s doused over with sharp mentaiko cheese and a dollop of gleaming ikura roe. Salty with a whole lotta crunch, this quirky creation is definitely worth a try.

Mythical Chawanmushi

Mythical Chawanmushi

Uncle Kiisu’s chawanmushi will have you forgetting the traditional ones in no time! Their version of the steamed egg custard is filled with hotate (scallop) chunks, and a truffle-infused jelly shaped like a magical unicorn sits atop an overflowing pile of ikura roe. Talk about indulgence! It’s almost too beautiful to dig into but trust us: the best way to enjoy this thing is to mix everything together and have it one bite at a time.

Sambal Kuro Ribs

Sambal Kuro Ribs.jpg

Love something with a kick? You can’t go wrong with the Sambal Kuro Ribs. Making this bad boy goes a little something like this: take a slab of Iberico pork ribs and steam-bake it overnight in a sambal marinade. Right before serving, buah keluak is lathered all over and torched to give it that nice, aburi char. Juicy and robust, this massive platter is enough to satisfy your fiery cravings, that’s for sure!

MTK by Aunty M

MTK by Aunty M_2

Wok hei, wok hei, and more wok hei! We can’t praise Uncle Kiisu enough for the MTK by Aunty M, a plate of mousetail noodles that’s wok-fried to perfection in their secret concoction of spices. Every mouthful gives you an explosion of flavours – the savoury century egg chunks, fresh minced prawn bits, and tender pork slices – and they tempt you to dive in for more.

Kiisu Muah Chee

Kiisu Muah Chee

Expect to be served with local-realness as their dessert on the menu hits a little closer to home. The Kiisu Muah Chee is given a Japanese treatment, flavoured with matcha powder, black sesame, and peanut powder. We were lucky enough to try the yuzu-flavoured one and it’s definitely something we’ve not had anywhere else! Pillowy and simple, this dish is just what you need to end a flavour-packed meal.

Just a heads-up, the menu varies each day according to the chef’s preference. However, we can assure you that the dishes will not disappoint you! Located at Square2 Novena, it is within walkable distance from Novena MRT station, so no excuse to go and visit Uncle Kiisu! Remember the deal is only valid throughout August.

5 Tips to Become a Savvy Diner

Imagine this: a special occasion is coming up. Maybe it’s your anniversary or your mother’s birthday. Or you’ve had a bad month and really need a treat. So you go to your favourite restaurant, but there’s a long line and you’re starving before you can get seats. Then, at the end of dinner, the bill comes, and you realise you’ll have to go on a diet for the next couple of weeks to make up for the dent in your wallet.

Kick those unpleasant surprises to the curb and have all your dinner plans go smoothly! Just follow these 5 tips to become a more money-saving and savvy diner.

1. Make a reservation

Make a reservation
Cr: theartistandhismodel.com

Are you a diner if you don’t get to dine in the first place? Philosophy aside, the first step of your dinner going to plan is making sure you’ll have dinner. All you have to do is call up the restaurant. For an even easier option, book your seats via Chope – it’ll all be done with a push of a button, and you’ll get to make special requests like asking for a window seat as well.

2. Keep track of promos

And no, we don’t mean bringing your younger siblings out to eat so you can use their student card for discounts. The easiest trick to becoming a savvy diner is keeping your eyes peeled, because loads of restaurants are having amazing deals right under your nose.

Cr: giphy.com

We’re talking 1-for-1 mains, 50% off the 2nd diner’s meal, and free sides. If you haven’t been checking in on our Chope Exclusives offers, you’re missing out on loads of delicious dining deals that are just begging to be gobbled up. Credit card holders are even more spoiled for choice with Chope’s credit card deals. You aren’t taking full advantage of those bank cards until you use them for more 1-for-1s and 50% discounts on your meal.

We change up the participating restaurants every month too, so make sure you check back regularly!

3. Buy lots of vouchers

Tip number 3 of being a savvy diner is to always be prepared. By that, we mean to have your vouchers on standby, so you can whip them out and use them whenever you need to. They’re a lifesaver – perfect for when you didn’t plan to dine out.

Be Prepared.jpg
Cr: memegenerator.net

We know it sounds painfully kiasu, but always having some vouchers for your favourite restaurant in your wallet ensures you never miss out on any savings. When you consider that some of the vouchers on the Chope Shop can get you up to 50% off, that doesn’t sound like such a bad idea anymore.

4. Loyalty points are your best friend

Life is full of simple pleasures, like dining out and knowing that every meal is bringing you one step closer to a reward. Taste that sweet satisfaction when you make a reservation using Chope, which gets you 100 Chope-Dollars for each booking.

Soon, you’ll have enough to redeem a dining voucher worth $30! Frequent flyer? Make those Chope-Dollars go the distance and use them to claim 1000 Krisflyer miles. Keep eating, and you’ll be bumped up to business class in no time.

5. Celebrate with Chope!

Chope Birthday

Speaking of Chope-Dollars, how would you like to earn enough to redeem a free meal? Just head over to celebrate.chope.co and get your unique promo code. Use the code whenever you’re making a booking to get 400 Chope-Dollars for your next 7 reservations. That’s 2,800 Chope-Dollars in total – enough to get you $80 worth of dining vouchers!

9 Eateries in Serangoon Gardens Perfect for Any Occasion

When in doubt, go to Serangoon Gardens. Whether you’re with a huge, boisterous group or looking for a quiet weekend brunch, there’s probably a restaurant here that fits the bill. Home to the famous Chomp Chomp and a growing number of delicious, affordable restaurants, this quiet neighbourhood hangout is now a foodie heaven. With options suitable for family days, large gatherings, cafe treats, supper, and sweets, Serangoon Gardens truly is the perfect choice for any occasion.

Family Friendly

Sun Ray Cafe

Sun Ray Cafe

The perfect picture of a neighbourhood cafe, Sun Ray Cafe is quaint and understated. However, what the cafe lacks in fancy interior design it more than makes up for in substance. It may not look it, but behind the unassuming facade, you can find premium hand-brewed, hand-roasted coffees, meticulously-brewed teas, and even homemade bread and spreads. Each bite and sip is dripping with love and care to give you warm and fuzzy feelings all morning long.

Besides being a great place for true connoisseurs of coffee and tea, Sun Ray Cafe is also a great go-to for furkids and pet parents to spend some quality time together. There’s even a section of their menu dedicated to foods safe for your furry friends so they can enjoy a meal with you for once.

Find it at 79 Brighton Crescent, Singapore 559218.

Homestyle Korean comfort foods reign supreme at this bustling family restaurant, with favourites like Korean pancakes, spicy tofu stew, and kimchi hotpot. While everything here tastes amazing, the soups and stews steal the show with their homemade broths, which are made from scratch every morning. Steam Box

Steam Box
Cr: sgfoodonfoot.com

If there’s one type of food made for sharing with the gang, it’s steamboat. And unlike the traditional steamboat we know and love with its oily soup and overcooked ingredients, Steambox makes sure you can stick to your diet plans as well. That’s because, as the name suggests, you steam your food rather than boil it, so all the food retains all its delicious flavours and nutrients

Of course, the best part of any steamboat is the broth at the end – where’s that amazing broth? It’s in the congee they prepare at the start of the meal. All the drippings from the steaming rack above it go down into the rice. You can imagine how delicious the porridge must be once you’re done with all that seafood, meats, and veggies.

Find it at 68 Serangoon Garden Way, Singapore 555962.

Hipster Cafe Food

Arbite

Arbite
Cr: jacqsowhat.com

Local or Western breakfast? Sometimes, it’s impossible to decide. At Arbite, you can get the best of both worlds on one delicious plate. With a touch of creativity and lots of spices, Arbite gives typical Western cafe items a Singaporean upgrade. The result is an indulgent meal that’s as heartwarming as a classic brunch, punctuated with all the punchy local flavours we all adore.

Apart from the usual fries with tom yum or salted egg dip (calm yourself, they have that too), more adventurous dishes include a Beef Rendang Mac & Cheese, the Arbite Breakfast featuring kaya toast and pandan-infused Ngoh Hiang, and Breaded Mushrooms that come with curry and lime mayo. Essentially, they combine everyone’s favourite comfort foods from the two cuisines – in other words, the perfect start to the weekend.

Find it at 66 A Serangoon Garden Way, Singapore 555962.

Artease

Cr: artease.sg

If you need a break from the daily grind, Artease is a sanctuary that would be perfect for you. They specialise in teas and grilled cheese, which is probably the most calming and comforting combo we know. Tea and grilled cheese sound simple, but they’ve come up with so many variations that these two timeless classics become exciting and new.

As if grilled cheese wasn’t already good enough, Artease also has options for different fillings – including a very tempting Extra Cheesy, as well as Chicken, Tuna, and Pesto. As for teas, they’ve got an absolutely delicious Salted Caramel Milk Tea – touted by fans as the best they’ve ever tasted.

Find it at 3 Phillip Street, #01-01, Singapore 048693.

Plonk on Maju

Plonk Main DishPlonk Dessert

Get wine, cocktails, and fantastic food without the hefty price tag and uppity fuss. Plonk, aptly named after the Australian slang for affordable wine, is a friendly and casual spot that’s open from morning until past midnight, making it perfect for anything from breakfast to late night suppers. It’s also great for an impromptu drink, so you and your pals can grab some tipples and not worry about the dress code and the cost.

Have a full-bodied Argentinian Malbec, or be a little whimsical and try their Serangoon Sling. As for food, they’ve got an extensive menu of Mediterranean-inspired bites to go with their equally impressive alcohol selection. We especially love their creamy, tangy, and savoury Seared Halloumi, and the rich and piquant Dukkah Spiced Beer Battered Barramundi. For sharing, the pizzas range from classics like Margherita to curious dishes you can’t help but want to try, like Kalamata Olives & Irish Goat Cheese.

Cr: singaporebestfoods.com

What’s Serangoon Gardens without Chomp Chomp? It’s the obvious choice for those craving some good old hawker fare like satay, carrot cake, and barbecued seafood. Affordable hawker centre prices don’t hurt either, making it great for supper on a budget.

Everyone familiar with Chomp Chomp will already have a favourite stall, but if you don’t frequent the north, here are some things you could start off with. Get your barbecue fix with a healthy serving of satay from Hong Sha Li Satay, chicken wings from Chong Pang Chicken Wings, and seafood from Hai Wei Yuan BBQ. Wash all that down with an impressively tall sugar cane tower from Ding Hao that just begs a spot on your Instagram.

Find it at 20 Kensington Park Rd, Singapore 557269.

A must-try here is the Durian Mousse. This signature dessert is what gives Dessert Bowl a bustling full house every night. It’s exactly what you need to satisfy your durian cravings, no matter what time of the year it is.

6. Chicken Up

Korean fried chicken has cemented its place in the Hallyu revolution, and fans of the crispy treat have had good cause to rejoice since the introduction of Chicken Up. Moist, tender, and coated with that addictive thin, crunchy, less greasy coating, Chicken Up’s exact technique is a closely guarded secret.

While the classic version holds a special place in our hearts (and stomachs), those who enjoy a little spice should head straight for their signature Spicy Up and the milder, sweeter YangNyum style. Fried chicken in Korea is often accompanied by alcohol beverages but those not looking to take advantage of the restaurant’s beer and soju offerings can easily content themselves with a traditional bingsu dessert instead.

8 Local-Inspired Meals to Feed the Singaporean in You!

Celebrate National Day in a truly Singaporean way: by eating! There’s nothing that brings the country together like our unique food, so loosen your belt and showcase your Singaporean appetite with these meals that capture what we love most about Singapore.

1. Urbana Rooftop Bar

Urbana Rooftop Bar ViewUrbana Rooftop Bar Cocktails

Have a bit of fun this National Day and treat yourself to some tipples and bar bites at Urbana Rooftop Bar. Boasting fine wines, signature cocktails, and a beautiful view that stretches all the way to Marina Bay, it’s a great place for a patriotic party. Your favourite hawker center supper of satay and Milo gets a boozy, classy upgrade here too!

The signature Pork and Pineapple Satay is everything we look for in a satay and more. Chunks of tender, juicy pork melt satisfyingly away from the stick, carrying hints of smoky char, while the pineapple provides bursts of sweetness. It also goes perfectly with the Chocoloco, a smooth, creamy, chocolatey cocktail. Made with Baileys, chocolate syrup, and vodka then topped with Milo powder, it’s inspired by none other than our childhood favourite Milo Dinosaur.

It’s in the same building as Urbana Rooftop Bar too, so you can always head upstairs for post-dinner drinks and a spot of supper!

Make sure you’re prepared for some heat, because both their signature items pack quite a punch! Slurp up a generous bowl of Tiger Prawn Laksa Lemak, topped with quail eggs, fishcakes, and huge, sweet tiger prawns. The coconut gravy is a masterpiece, balancing the spiciness with its creamy texture and fragrance. Conrad Lobby Lounge’s 1-for-1 Weekend High Tea is a seafood lover’s heaven

Buffet high teas are somewhat of a common ritual here in Singapore but when we heard of Conrad Lobby Lounge‘s new 4-course Weekend High Tea offering, we can’t help but pop by to experience it ourselves.

background_LLbar
Tear away from the hustle and bustle of the city and feel your worries melt away as you step into the lounge. The warm wood panellings and comfortable lounge chairs beckon you to relax and unwind, while the waiting staff tend to your needs. A typical high tea starts off light and simple but at Conrad, you know you’ll be pampered through and through.

28122518-SeafoodPlatter_resized_2000x1500
An indulgent beginning comes in the form of a refreshing Seafood Platter that features a trio of lobster, prawns, and oysters. A squirt of lime and a dash of hot sauce add a touch of brightness to the fresh ocean catch, whetting your appetite for more. While tucking into poached Boston lobster with brilliantly plump prawns, and slurping down luscious Irish oysters, we thought: can it get any better than this?

Oh yes, yes it can.

262_ Conrad june 2018
The second course presented itself as a myriad of savoury delights and sweet treats. From House Cured Salmon to Orange Curd, Fresh Thyme Flower and Ivory Chocolate Mousse, tiers upon tiers of high tea selections were brought to the table. Feast your eyes on the lobby lounge’s extensive catalogue of Ronnefeldt teas as well, where you can take your pick from calming classics to unique concoctions such as the Orange Pekoe tea.

We delighted in their Baked Mango and Passionfruit Lava and wished we could devour endless servings of their Heirloom Tomato and Marinated Mozzarella TartletsEating your way down the tiers, greet the fresh strawberries and classic chantilly cream at the end to finish off on a sweet note.

Don’t just take our word for it – explore them yourselves and find your favourite out of the list of treats on the menu!

264_ Conrad june 2018
Wrap up the tiered treats with a serving of Conrad’s popular Warm Scones, served alongside mini pots of homemade fig, strawberry jam, and clotted cream. Smear clotted cream onto the warm scones, and have it together with your jam of choice. If there was a way to turn satisfaction into flavour, this comes really close.

On the other hand, get in touch with your swish side when you tuck into their Cheeseboard that offers Brie, Chaume, and Tomme de Savoie alongside a smorgasbord of crackers and dried fruits.

Still unconvinced? Here’s a Chope insider’s tip: Conrad’s throwing in a sweet deal this month with Chope Exclusives! Enjoy a 1-for-1 Weekend High Tea from $68++ at the Lobby Lounge when you make a reservation with the promo code CE8LL*.
