  1. TAKI

IMG_9892.jpg

First up was this glorious, immaculately-plated Shokado-bento from TAKI. The bento is a treasure trove of classic Japanese dishes such as tamago, yakitori skewers, and thick slices of sashimi. The chawanmushi that came with the set was silky smooth, bouncy, and had a melt-in-your-mouth texture that we couldn’t get enough of.

At TAKI, diners can get acquainted with a one-of-a-kind dining experience. Called “Kuzushi-Kappo”, this new branch of Japanese cuisine involves adding a modern and casual twist to traditional Japanese dining, using fresh and premium ingredients. Originating in Kyoto, it is fast gaining worldwide popularity.

  1. Osaka Kitchen

1.gif

Next, our taste buds were treated with this simple yet absolutely delectable stuffed egg omelette at Osaka Kitchen. With the head outlet in Tokyo recognized as a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant in 2016, you know you’re in good hands here. Sit at the counter and watch the chefs whip up your meal, while you dig into teppanyaki dishes fresh off the flat iron top.

gif2.gif

Called Tonpei Yaki, this dish features a crepe-like omelette that is stuffed with chopped pork belly strips and rolled into a fluffy egg pillow. Prior to serving, the chef adds generous amounts of mayo and okonomiyaki sauce. We absolutely loved this – the saltiness of the okonomiyaki sauce perfectly balanced the sweetness and creaminess of the mayo, and together with the fluffy egg omelette, it was an explosion of tastes and textures.

  1. Nabe Seizan

IMG_9993.jpg

Beef takes centre stage at Japanese hot pot restaurant Nabe Seizan, opened by the same chef behind 2-Michelin starred restaurant Seizan in Tokyo. What differentiates them from other hot pot restaurants is their soup stock. Made with 100% premium bottled water, the soup is prepared with a unique blend of kelp, kombu, bonito, and tuna, with absolutely no added MSG.

IMG_0002.jpg

With a stock so pristine, there’s no need for dips and sauces – all you need is a good couple of swirls of the beef in the boiling stock and consider yourself sorted! The natural essence of the beef is meaty and tender, coming through beautifully as it cooks. The broth also imparts a slight umami to the beef, adding new dimensions of flavour that you wouldn’t have thought possible. Simple, yet oh-so-amazing.

  1. Inaniwa Yosuke

2.jpg

At Inaniwa Yosuke, a restaurant specializing in handmade udon noodles, the beauty lies in the simplicity of its dishes. We tried two versions of the noodles: one chilled and the other in hot broth. The noodles in the Kake Udon were steeped in a steaming vinegary broth, while the Zaru Udon came chilled, with 2 dipping sauces.

gif7.gif

To prepare the chilled udon, the chef boils the noodles for 2-3 minutes, rinses them twice in cold water to stop the noodles from cooking further, before skillfully pulling it into a neat bundle. The udon is then served with a smooth sesame dip and a soy sauce that has hints of wasabi. Soft, chewy, and silky, the noodles were truly remarkable, with the wasabi adding a punch to every bite.

  1. Yakiniku Heijoen

1 12.53.24 AM.jpg

Yakiniku beef lovers will rejoice at the sight of the premium meats served at Yakiniku Heijoen. Here, they treat their beef like fine wine, only procuring top quality Wagyu beef varieties from all over Japan.

4.jpg

We had the Deluxe Heijoen Kalbi which features Japanese beef carefully sourced from black-haired cattle. Thin, beautifully sliced beef are presented to you at the table, which a waiter later proceeds to help you cook them to perfection. Buttery with an almost mellow milky flavour, the beef is moist, tender, and has an astoundingly melt-in-your-mouth quality that you won’t soon forget. The marbling of the beef fat adds a level of complexity to the otherwise plain meat. Despite the simplicity of having it gently cooked over a hot grill, the nuances of flavours is anything but simple.

Beef buffs will also be able to sample top-notch Nozaki beef from Japan at Yakiniku Heijoen. Nozaki beef is an A-5 grade meat, the highest out of 5 levels, and is sourced from cows which are taken care of under a thorough fattening management. This gives the meat an excellent flavour, while not being overly rich.

  1. Sabar Singapore

6.jpg

Sushi takes a creative spin at SABAR, a restaurant specializing in all things mackerel. Using top-quality mackerel from Aomori, the Assorted Saba Sushi comes with saba cooked in 3 ways – Aburi, Vinegar, and Grilled. Rolled into a compact oval shape, the rice grains used are from Yamagata prefecture and have a texture reminiscent of those used in Chinese rice dumplings.

All of us couldn’t stop raving about the Shime Saba which had a slight tang imparted by the vinegar and salt marinade used. If there’s anything I would come back for, it would be for the vinegar mackerel sushi, hands down.

  1. Tsukiji Sushi Takewaka

gif4.gif

Takewaka opened his first shop over 3 decades ago in Tsukiji, the biggest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world. Here, every piece of sushi is handcrafted by experienced and skilled chefs, using the freshest catch of the day.

IMG_0042.jpg

The interior of Tsukiji Sushi Takewaka is simple and understated with two kinds of seatings – floor and counter. Upon entering the restaurant, we promptly plopped ourselves onto the high stools and watched in amazement as the sushi chef nimbly assembled our sushi platter. We had the Tsukiji, a platter of authentic Edomae-style sushi that came with a variety of nigiri sushi. Fresh and clean-tasting, it didn’t take long for us to wipe the plate clean.

  1. Bonta Bonta

IMG_9950.jpg

Rice is usually thought of as the supporting role in a meal, or as a mere accompaniment to meats and vegetables. However, a meal at Bonta Bonta will change your mind about the humble rice grain. Here, the rice is selected by a rice sommelier and processed to the highest standards to qualify as Kinmemai. It is moist, fluffy, and has a slight buttery taste, making it an excellent base for rice bowls such as the Salmon Oyako Don that we had.

The Salmon Oyako Don was a stunning sea of orange – think thick cuts of salmon sashimi, aburi salmon, and beads of fish roe crowning a bed of warm Kinmemai rice. The chewy rice grains balanced out the richness of the fatty salmon while the fish roe added a pop of umami to each bite; this was truly a bowl of decadence.

Carousel’s Upcoming High Tea Buffet Will Transport You To The Streets of Taiwan!

Public service notice: Do not read this post when hungry. If you find yourself drooling over your phone or computer while reading, immediately head to Chope to make a reservation at Carousel for what could possibly be the tastiest High Tea Buffet in Singapore…and here’s what to expect!

‘Gurgle, gurgle’.

Your stomach growls as you take a step into the brightly lit interior of the restaurant, seduced by the scent of food wafting through the air.

“Mmmm, that smells sooo good,” you think to yourself.

Without hesitation, you head towards the buffet line, ready to dig in. Platters of tantalising food greet you – Mediterranean, Asian, Japanese, Seafood, Dim Sum, and not one, but THREE dazzling dessert stations.

Carousel, Royal Plaza on Scotts.jpg

Your gaze drifts over the four uniquely themed dining spaces. You have the requisite Japanese selections of sashimi, sushi, and teppanyaki – they may not grab your attention immediately like the three dessert bars (we can’t get over this), but they are highly underrated. At the Rotisserie section (yep, that’s where that amazing smell is coming from), you’ll find a Chicken Kebab (Shovaslaki) live station where meat is carved straight from the roasting spit onto a pita bread or tortilla, packed with fresh greens, and then drizzled with creamy mayonnaise before serving. There’s also a Nasi Lemak station with a large variety of sides and mains to accompany the fragrant coconut rice, such as Baked Chicken with a Sambal Peanut Sauce and Sambal Prawns with Beancurd and Quail Eggs.

If that wasn’t enough, there’s also a live Popiah station, Waffle station, Deli corner, Seafood on Ice, and so much more, you’ll be spoilt for choice!

Hungry yet?

There will also be a variety of braised dishes at the Taiwan Stew Station such as braised chicken wings and beancurd tofu, served with assorted sauces and condiments.

Fans of the iconic Taiwanese street food, Oyster Omelette (蚵仔煎), can happily indulge at the Teppanyaki live station, which will also be serving up steaming hot, Pan-fried Crystal Buns (水煎包) .

Taiwan Spring Roll, Carousel, Royal Plaza on Scotts.jpg

Other highlights of the high tea include Braised Seafood in Bread Toast (台湾棺材板), also known as ‘Coffin Toast’, Taiwan Spring Roll (台湾润饼), Grilled Taiwan Sausages (台湾香肠), and Flaky Scallion Pancakes (葱油饼).

Taiwanese-style Shaved Ice with Condiments, Carousel, Royal Plaza on Scotts.jpg

Finally, to round out the meal, indulge your sweet tooth with signature Taiwanese desserts such as Shaved Ice (综合冰) with your choice of flavored toppings and condiments, Lemon Aiyu Jelly, and Taiwanese Pineapple Tarts (台湾凤梨酥). Or you could go to one of the three dessert bars. Just sayin’.

This promotion will be available from 3 – 13 July, during the high tea period from 3.30pm to 5.30pm at $42++ for adults and $27++ for children on weekdays. On weekends, it will be $48++ for adults and $32++ for children.

TEA-se Me with the Ultimate Springtime Indulgence: Hong Kong’s Best Afternoon Teas

Ladies, did you know that the origins of afternoon tea harkens back to Anna Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford? Back in those days, the Duchess was only served two meals each day—once in the morning for breakfast, and once in the evening for dinner. Overcome by never-ending hunger pangs, Anna decided to schedule a time each afternoon for a quick repast. Thus the afternoon tea was born, which rose to popularity first in London’s top hotels and was gradually embraced by Britain’s outposts worldwide.

Now you can enjoy this popular British pastime at an eclectic array of Hong Kong’s restaurants, from the posh digs of Clipper Lounge to the Nordic-inspired afternoon tea at FINDS. Pinkies at the ready? Let’s go!

Three. Two. One. Yep, there has to be three reasons why The Ritz-Carlton’s The Lounge & Bar is a must-go in our book. Firstly, talk about the view! Indulge yourself with a lavish and bountiful feast 420 meters above sea level with panoramic views of Victoria Harbour. You’ll see fab views of the Island, and on a clear day, Devil’s and Kowloon Peak. Second, the ambiance is unparalleled. A grand piano merrily plays Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons; it’s a classy retreat for those looking for a little pomp and indulgence. Finally, the high tea itself packs a serious punch. Savoury items—Ham & Cheese Brioche, Cheese Tart—are a combination of rich and intense flavours. Located just below Ozone, The Ritz-Carlton’s The Lounge & Bar packs a serious punch when it comes to a cosy pot of tea and some finger sandwiches—an excellent place to ‘Lounge’ and relax.

Clipper Lounge: Traditional Opulence

Mover or shaker? Clipper Lounge has historically been the rendezvous of choice for Hong Kong’s ‘it’ crowd. Here you’ll see the real jam: an eclectic mix of bankers hawking their pitchbooks, doting ‘ladies who lunch’, and the odd traveler or two. Expect legendary white-glove service and delicious British-inspired classics including Plain and Raisin Scones with clotted cream served with the Mandarin Oriental’s infamous rose petal jam on top. Be sure to smother that jam on literally every morsel, ‘cause it’s that good. Trust us. Post-indulgence, imbibe from their extensive tea menu, offering the highest quality of teas. If you’re a bit more of a health nut, then don’t miss out on their freshly pressed watermelon juice.

Above & Beyond: Asian Afternoon Tea

There’s more to the eye at Above & Beyond. Sure, the breathtaking views of Victoria Harbour 28 stories up are truly postcard-worthy. But what sets them ‘above & beyond’  amongst the inundation of afternoon tea choices in HK, has to be—cue the drumroll—dim sum. Yup! Sweet and savoury Cantonese plates are all present here: Sweetened Almond Cream with Lotus Seeds and Lily Bulbs, Pork Dumpling with Halibut and Black Mushroom, and Mushroom Dumpling with Pumpkin. Yum. So what’s better than dim sum? Desserts of course. Above & Beyond’s dessert selections are a bit of French-Asian fusion. Savour the Chilled Jelly with Lychee and Osmanthus (the lychee flavours are deliciously concentrated) as well as the Chestnut Crème Brûlée: a perfect dénouement, with its crunchy and custardy flavours melded to a buttery puff pastry base. Soar to new heights beyond our day-to-day afternoon tea haunts.

SIN-ful-LEE Indulgent Meals @ Sin Lee Foods!

SLF-Exterior-Blinds

‘WE DO NOT SERVE AND WILL NOT SERVE LAME EGGS BENEDICTS WHATSOEVER, SO TAKE A LEAP OF FAITH AND HAVE A GO AT OUR FOOD & BEVERAGES,’ proclaims the menu of Sin Lee Foods. It’s cheeky and unabashed—an attitude that translates into some downright delicious cooking. We can attest that the aforementioned leap of faith will definitely pay off should you take it.

Sin Lee Foods is hardly an unfamiliar name to any seasoned café-hopper. When they first opened their shutters, the Bukit Ho Swee hangout made a name for itself by modernizing an old-school spot – they even preserved the original signboard! Boasting a retro logo, bold cuisine, and an Instagram-worthy space, they became instantly recognizable.

SLF Beef Bulgogi, Mantou & Cinema Cheese (2)

Recently, in the spirit of reinvention, they’ve launched a new menu and we just can’t get enough of it. One standout is the Beef Bulgogi, Mantou & Cinema Cheese ($23), which features tender chunks of meat, crunchy crackers, pillowy mantou—and the best part: flowy cinema-style cheese oozing over the bulgogi that’ll bring back youthful memories of sneaking steaming bites of nachos in the movie theater! And boy, has our childhood indulgence grown up.

Sin-Lee-Beef-&-Grains-(1)

Think Duck and Duck ($26) sounds simple? Think again. It’s smoked and roasted Japanese duck, paired with melt-in-your-mouth foie gras caramelized in a pan, served with accoutrements like steamed rice, housemade sesame sauce, and a runny fried egg. Deceptively simple, but ultimately delicious indeed!

Other notable dishes like Beef & Grains ($25) are equally luxurious: you’ll enjoy a solid 180 grams of deliciously marbled striploin served over wet orzo ‘rice’, a runny egg, ginger, and furikake & scallions for that extra umami touch. It’s undoubtedly creative fusion dishes like this that have kept us hooked and coming back for more.

Sin-Lee-Salted-Egg-Burger-(2)

Their weekday special menu is also a can’t-miss. Fast food chains got nothin’ on their burgers—Sin Lee hopped right onto the salted egg yolk bandwagon with this stunner of a dish. Whole chicken thigh, fried to crisp perfection, is slathered with creamy, umami salted egg sauce and served on a bun. The second burger offering will make you salivate too: tender catfish fillet, breaded and fried, then topped with mentaiko cream sauce and ebiko roe that positively pops in your mouth. It’s an ambitious blend of Southern cuisine and Japanese-influenced cooking, dished up in a single explosive fusion.

Calrose Rice Bowls are yet another addition to tantalise your tastebuds. With an inventive range of toppings from Salmon & Tuna Wasabi Poke to Korean Rubbed Chicken Thigh, these new bowls are a steal for under $15 each.

Sin-Lee-Aburi-Broccoli-Salad-(2)

But don’t fret, their crowd favourites are still around. Since its inception, Sin Lee’s Aburi Broccoli Salad ($13) has occupied a place in our hearts, and thankfully we can still indulge. Smoky torched broccoli florets drizzled with white balsamic, papadum, and red sugar may sound funky, but it’s a truly genius combination. Who said vegetables couldn’t be addictive?

Sin-Lee-Chicken-&-Waffles-(2)

And don’t forget the Fried Chicken & Waffles ($21.90) that catapulted them to foodie fame: marinated in har jiong and drizzled with melted maple butter and sesame gomae slaw, this fried chicken comes tenderly nestled upon crisp waffles straight from the iron cast.

Pair it with a Swedish craft cider ($15) or an adventurous Banana Horlicks Smoothie ($9), and you got yourself some good ol’ comfort vibes. See you there!

Wild Honey – Wonderful Anytime, Even Better During the Holidays!

DC2016 Main Logo_main logo

WH3_green_chair

A visit to Wild Honey is like a holiday retreat in itself: its homely rustic furnishings and large plush sofas (perfect for sinking right into) add to the cosy and comforting ambience of this ever-so-popular brunch spot. Serving up huge portions of different types of breakfast foods from all over the world, from savoury to sweet and everything in between, it’s really no wonder that it’s been voted Chope’s Best Restaurant 2016 and clinched the “Best Brunch Spot” for two consecutive years (2014 & 2015) in Chope’s Diners’ Choice Awards. It’s the perfect place for a lazy Sunday family brunch, a romantic first date, a celebratory meal, or high tea with someone special.

Sunday Roast002

The brunch experience is made even better this Easter weekend with something extra special: tender and juicy roasted Australian sirloin carved to perfection, served alongside Yorkshire pudding, roasted root vegetables, green peas & red wine gravy ($35++)!* They also have the perfect glass of wine to pair it with: St. Hallett Cabernet Sauvignon from Down Under ($9++ per glass), specially curated by the geniuses at Culine, no less. (Note: this special Easter roast is accessible by reservation only via Chope, so be sure to indicate it on the ‘select menu’ drop-down box when you book a table!)

Already have plans this Easter weekend? Fret not, Wild Honey’s doing us a massive favour by giving this stellar dish a permanent spot on their menu at Scotts Square every Sunday – carnivores rejoice! Places are limited as well, so be sure to make a Chope reservation to get your fix!

Savoy Omelette001

If you’re restricting yourself to fish this Easter, give the Savoy ($28++) a whirl – this delectable new dish combines the elegance of a souffléd omelette alongside softly poached smoked haddock & creamy cheese sauce with a hint of cayenne for a mild kick.

It’s made even better with a glass of fresh, fragrant Torres Viña Esmeralda DO Catalunya from Spain ($9++). I’m salivating just thinking about it!

norwegian_002 ilovenewyork

Alternatively, you could tuck into one of the classics that propelled them to cult-like status in the first place: the Norwegian. This bad boy is all sorts of delicious – it consists of creamy poached eggs wrapped in Norwegian smoked salmon, topped with Hollandaise sauce and a sprinkling of salmon roe. All this is placed atop avocado and grilled asparagus spears and served up on a crisp whole wheat brioche.

If you’re more of a scrambled eggs & bagel person, their I Love NY is bound to be one of your new favourites! Dig into a generous portion of fluffy, creamy scrambled eggs with smoked sturgeon, smoked salmon, and caramelized onions that you can stuff into a delicious hand rolled sesame bagel. YUM.

DSC_1953

Fancy a tea break? Pop by their Scott’s Square outlet any day from 3-6pm (or Fridays at their Mandarin Gallery spot) for their new special Afternoon Tea set ($15++) and treat yourself to an assortment of freshly baked, buttery scones served alongside homemade preserves, French butter and clotted cream, or dig into one of their delectable cakes of the day; perfect paired with your choice of TWG select teas, a mug of Common Man coffee, or an indulgent cup of Parisian hot chocolate! Prefer a boozy brunch? Go with a glass of Ruffino Italian Blanc Prosecco ($12++)  instead, or go all out with 90 minutes free flow prosecco for just $48++!

unnamedwild honey brownie

If you’re not all that into breakfast menus, Wild Honey’s still got you covered with a couple of exciting new additions to their extensive menu this April! Tuck into toothsome dinner items like Classic Steak Frites, Parisienne Gnocchi and Grilled Spring Chicken, alongside a range of exquisite desserts, like their brand new (and incredibly tantalizing) Chocolate Pot de Crème with Chocolate Brownie.

Kick back for a relaxed brunch or celebrate a special holiday with the people you call family – no matter what your choices are, there’s something for everyone at Wild Honey.
