KAUM at Potato Head

Tucked away in a largely nondescript Third Street outpost in Sai Ying Pun, KAUM makes its Hong Kong debut marrying multiple Indonesian flavours. What’s unique about KAUM is its showcasing of almost-forgotten Indonesian cooking techniques. Their most famous dish has to be the Timbungan Babi: pork belly marinated with Balinese spices and cooked inside a bamboo shoot! At Taste, the eclectic menu combines classic Indonesian dishes with modern twists. Take their Braised Wagyu Beef Shank in a Black Nut and Chayote, Sweet Soy Sauce & Coconut Milk Broth – iconic yet modern. Don’t also miss out the Scallops & Barramundi Cooked in a Spicy & Sour Turmeric Sauce.

7 Things about Botanico at The Garage that We Can’t Get Enough of

A new gem has just opened its doors at Singapore Botanic Gardens, and it’s one that we can’t stop talking about! From impeccable eats to tantalising drinks, there’s more to Botanico at The Garage than meets the eye – here are 7 good reasons why this charming restaurant has stolen our hearts.

botanico-bistrobotanico-garden-bar

1. Dining in the heart of nature

Expect your dining experience at Botanico to be both calming and reviving. Located at the renowned Singapore Botanic Gardens, we couldn’t help but immediately unwind once we settled at our tables.

The main dining hall is simple but comforting, with large windows that allow ample light to brighten up the ambience during the day. Botanico’s hidden bar, also Singapore’s very first air-conditioned al-fresco bar, is located at the outdoor terrace that overlooks the foliage of the Gardens, making it the perfect spot to rendezvous with friends and bond over great drinks and even better conversations.

chef-antonio-oviedomixologist-ruzaini-hashim

2. The culinary geniuses at Botanico

Behind every dish is an impeccable culinary team. Helmed by Chef Antonio Oviedo, who has cut his teeth at many Michelin-starred restaurants, the team at Botanico understands the importance of natural, seasonal ingredients drawn from the best-quality sources – and this is evident in each of Botanico’s exceptional dishes that draws balance between sweet and savoury.

With a heritage from both the North and South of Spain, and years of experience under his belt, Chef Antonio’s seasonality-driven cuisine is characterised by a casual yet refined approach. Mixologist Ruzaini Hashim also draws upon nature to create tasty tipples that are refreshing and pair well with the dishes from the kitchen.

lamb-tartare

3. A Lamb Tartare you won’t soon forget

The Lamb Tartare came highly recommended, and we can see why: instead of the traditional beef, lamb is the star of this dish and it’s given a French treatment that does wonders in enhancing its fresh, mellow flavours.

The mustard sorbet and pickled onions in this rendition give it a touch of brightness. For added creaminess, Chef Antonio introduced egg yolk cream instead of the traditional raw yolk. Nasturtiums, flown in from Spain, aren’t merely plating decorations; it imparts a hint of spiciness when eaten with the lamb.

With such an impressive starter, it was difficult not to let it set the bar for our expectations towards Chef Antonio’s other courses.

4. Freshen up with a tasty line-up of cocktails

As a feast is made for laughter, drinks make life merry. Botanico’s resident mixologist Ruzaini Hashim serves up a tantalising, botanical-inspired selection, such as the Garage Gin’Onic, Blackberry Lychee Mojito, and Thyme Lemonade.

Botanico’s Blackberry Lychee Mojito makes for a refreshing start. The blend of blackberry and lychee creates a balance between sweet and sour, easing us into the kick from the rum. On the other hand, the crowd-favourite Thyme Lemonade combines vodka with fresh lemonade for an inviting weather refresher, and a sprig of thyme that adds a mild flavour profile.

Who wouldn’t love a tasty tipple at a hidden garden bar located on a spacious outdoor terrace? We simply couldn’t resist!

roasted-pigeon

5. Chef Antonio’s memorable Roasted Pigeon

This dish was introduced to us as Roasted Pigeon done two ways: the breast is pan-seared and the leg, confit.

While roasted pigeon sounds like a relatively simple dish, the nuances of textures and tastes are anything but. The pigeon is slightly crispy on the outside while maintaining a tender and moist inside. The parsnips are crisp and slightly sweet, while the Conte cheese and balsamic vinegar lend piquancy to the dish. The purple sorrel petals are fragrant and gives the dish a bright and citrusy undertone.

Pro-tip: Have it with the Thyme Lemonade for a match made in heaven.

chargrilled-spanish-mackerel

6. Chargrilled Spanish Mackerel – a dish that comes alive

We were intrigued by how Chef Antonio is able to take this simple dish and give it a whole new dimension of flavours by introducing humble ingredients that work extremely well together.

Fresh Spanish Mackerel is chargrilled to perfection, imparting light smoky flavours and a firm bite. The sweetness from dehydrated seasonal fruits and the slight bitterness from the lightly stir-fried brussel sprouts create a balance that complements the umami from the mackerel. For a touch of indulgence, black garlic paste is used to round up the flavours and provide a robust finish.

botanist

7. End your meal with a bang with the Botanist

With such a charming name, it was difficult not to order this dessert right off the bat! Resembling the luscious foliage in which Botanico is situated, the Botanist is a dish that is both impressive in smell and flavour.

The fragrance of the makrut lime zest immediately drew us in. Each component of the dish offer a stark contrast of tastes against one another – the sharp lime jam with the refreshing cucumber sorbet, the luscious coconut cream with the tart granny smiths – but when they come together, it creates an explosion of flavours with every mouthful.

Refreshing and decadent, this dessert was the perfect way for us to round off the night.

Located in peaceful Taikoo Shing, Eiffel Bistro is quickly positioning itself as the place for either an upscale business lunch or a more chill family soirée. We love Eiffel’s Parisian-style bistro, open kitchen, and wide, people-watching windows and artwork, inspired by the iconic Eiffel tower.

Eiffel’s menu is a bit more diverse than other classic French bistros on our list. Inclusive of additions such as fishes, meats and sharing platters, Eiffel Bistro’s a la carte offerings are definitely fit for anyone’s taste. We love Eiffel’s Homemade Duck Foie Gras, which include two generous pieces of perfectly cooked liver coupled with seasonal chutney and crispy toast. Bistronomique (Kennedy Town)

Head over to Bistronomique’s Kennedy Town outpost for great flavours and striking minimalism. With its high ceilings, Bistronomique’s dining room decor touts Scandinavian chic meets country rustic. We love the warm cream tones , providing a soothing ambiance overall. Tables are a bit too close for our liking, but hey, what’s not to like in being close to your fellow comrades? Maybe you can try a bit of their Roasted Goose if you ask nicely.

Led by local chef David Lai, Bistronomique combines the best of local Hong Kong flavour with the techniques and culinary concoctions of the kitchens of illustrious restaurants such as Alain Ducasse’s Le Louis XV in Monaco. Even though we know that The Continental isn’t a pure play French restaurant, we love the restaurant’s contemporary design, inspired by Europe’s grand cafés.  The best way to describe The Continental is French elegance meets British gastronomy.

What’s more, their Valentine’s Day Set Menu is sure one not to miss. We can’t get enough of their Butter Poached Alaskan Halibut & Caviar, featuring crushed russet potatoes, with tangy lemon butter and luxurious bits of caviar. Les Fils à Maman

Named after four childhood friends who decided to bring back the good old recipes they enjoyed so much during their childhood, Les Fils à Maman serves up simple homemade classics their French mothers used to cook them everyday.

We love the Obelix & Asterix references, and the adorable childhood pictures of the co-founders of the restaurant, found in Les Fils’ rustic menu. It’s certainly something unique, and different vis-à-vis other restaurants that we had the pleasure of visiting.  We love the outrageous value found within Les Fils’ lunch menu, including dishes such as Fried Spices Babybel Croquettes, Raw & Smoked Salmon Rilletes as well as Fish of the Day and Seasonal Pot. What’s more, most French degustations at Les Fils are under $200! As an added bonus, we dig their tastefully designed interior; it’s reminiscent of the rustic chateaus off in France’s Burgundy region and costs waaaay less than a plane ticket to France.

7 Unusual Meat Eats and Where to Find Them

From tongue and hearts to stomach and everything in between, these seven meat eats may be unusual, but our taste buds aren’t complaining. Challenge your food fears, relinquish those culinary inhibitions, and take a look at how restaurants prepare, flavour, and serve up these crazy animal parts.

salt-n-pepper-tripe

1. Kangaroo Tartare and Tripe at Salted & Hung

Tripe is the stomach lining of a farm animal, but don’t worry, not only is it totally edible, but also tastes heavenly to those who can…stomach it. Seasoned lightly with salt and pepper before frying, Salted & Hung’s Salt ‘N’ Pepper Tripe will definitely leave you scratching your head wondering why it tastes so good.

kangaroo-tar-tar-beets-juniper-1

And if you think eating stomach is weird, how about having a go at raw kangaroo meat? Not a dish that comes by easily in Singapore, Salted & Hung’s Kangaroo Tartare is a definite must-try. Here are some of the best reasons why: it makes for a great conversation-starter ( “do you want to hear about that time I tasted raw kangaroo meat??”), and it’s also a dish you’ll be dreaming about for days. Dressed up with pickled beetroot, juniper crumbs, and blood orange creme, this elevated cuisine will surprise your senses with every bite.

2. Duck Hearts on Toast at Dehesa

At this nose-to-tail dining experience, the philosophy is clear: every part of the animal that can be eaten shall be savoured. From Pig Head, Duck Heart, Bone Marrow, Oxtail, and to the more familiar Suckling Pig, it’s time to put aside your misgivings and dive right in! The firm duck hearts are slathered in a dark sweet sauce for a perfect texture combo with the crunchy toast – the ultimate solution to satisfy both your curiosity and appetite.

3. Stewed Crocodile Palm at Summer Palace

Who would have thought this vicious predator would be served on a plate? Summer Palace’s Stewed Crocodile Palm in Claypot has left us with no choice but to leave all our prejudices at the door – that’s how good it tastes. Chef Liu uses only the freshest and highest grade quality ingredients to create authentic yet innovative dishes there; in fact, the crocodile meat at Summer Palace is locally sourced. In some parts of the world (including Hong Kong), crocodile meat is considered a delicacy. This surprisingly tender meat is low in cholesterol, high in protein and has close to zero fat. Not to mention it’s a great addition to your growing list of impressive ‘I-bet-you’ve-never tried…[insert crazy food item]’!

4. Crispy Pig Ears at Naughty Nuri’s

Don’t be surprised to hear that pig ears are both fatty and delicious, especially when the restaurant serving them knows how to dish out fabulously unusual meat eats. The team at Naughty Nuri’s prepares the ears with a simple combination of spicy curry powder and lime, resulting in an initial crunch that is flavourful and tangy, followed by some melt-in-your-mouth meaty goodness. Perfect for nibbling on while enjoying a few of their famous martinis.

5. Beef Tongue Quesadillas at Señor Taco

There’s really nothing unusual about how sinfully good these Beef Tongue Quesadillas are when you consider that they’re cooked up by the expert chefs at this genuine Tex-Mex joint. Señor Taco serves these bad boys in 6-inch flour tortillas with shredded beef tongue barbacoa and layers of melty cheese. Beef tongue is quite high in fat but is actually relatively delicate given its rich flavour, similar to a brisket or deli-style roast beef. Following the cooking styles of Northern Mexico or barbacoa norteña, the beef tongue is slow cooked for 8 hours with only a few ingredients, rendering it fork tender while retaining all its beefy goodness. Don’t overthink this one: just top it with green sauce and drops of lime, and dig into this tasty delicacy worthy of your culinary appreciation!

6. Salmon Ovaries at Ginza Sushi-ichi

So it may not be meat technically, but it comes close enough! In case you didn’t already know, salmon roe is essentially the fully ripe internal egg masses in a salmon’s ovaries, but we doubt you’ll stop eating it anytime soon. With a smooth texture and delicate flavour, this is a ubiquitous cuisine in all Japanese restaurants. For an artisanal take on this beloved dish though, head to Ginza Sushi-ichi, and let their Michelin-starred sushi blow your mind.

7. Raw Beef at The Disgruntled Chef

Yes folks, beef can be eaten raw, and for those who don’t know it goes by the elegant name of “steak tartare”. Featuring finely chopped or minced raw beef, steak tartare is often served with onions and seasoning. Some restaurants, like The Disgruntled Chef here, even top it off with a raw egg. While the steak tartare isn’t extremely common in Singapore, it’s no stranger to Europeans, and can be found at almost every restaurant on the streets of Paris. Try it once, and you’ll be hard pressed to order your steak well-done ever again.

birds-of-a-feather-1birds-of-a-feather-2

Birds of a Feather

In case you didn’t know, hipster Sichuan is kind of a thing now. Unsurprisingly located among other trendy Amoy Street joints, Birds of a Feather has flown slightly under the radar since its opening in November.

The team dishes out contemporary fusion cuisine with a decidedly Sichuan flare, apparent on dishes like the Tofu Burger with Mapo Meat Sauce, and the Crispy Pork Trotter in a Bag filled with numbing Sichuan spices. Other inspiring plates like the Crispy Gyoza with Truffle Soy Vinaigrette, and Oriental Bolognaise with Onsen Tamago, Mizuna, and Ebi Sakura delve even deeper into fusion territory, and play with flavours in irresistibly delicious ways. Add in a gorgeous ambiance with lush greenery, an extensive cocktail list, house-made desserts (mmm that Poached Pear!), and we’ve got an absolute must-try for 2017.

For better or worse, just don’t expect quite the same level of mala you’d find in Chengdu.

Monti

“I believe that dining should not only focus on food; it should be an extension of the atmosphere and the company. All the different elements—food, drink and entertainment—should work together to create a well-rounded, holistic, and, most importantly, fun night out.” – Chef Luigi Calcagno

Taking over the former home of Catalunya in the glass dome at Fullerton Pavillion, Monti promises to be a complete ‘lifestyle destination’ along Marina Bay offering up more than just dinner and drinks, though those are reason enough to visit. Italian chef Luigi Calcagno, co-owner of the famous Zibiru in Bali, is the mastermind behind the slew of fresh pastas, meats, & seafood, and we cannot stop thinking about his heavenly handmade Invertiti Ravioli stuffed with braised veal in a cream of bone marrow sauce. Topped with parmesan and lemon zest, it’s a true standout on an already impressive menu.

Enjoy expertly mixed drinks (try the Mr. Monti with its basil, Bacardi Carta Blanca, freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, and East Imperial Grapefruit tonic) to jazz up a romantic and/or cosy dinner with waterfront views, or go all out and wine, dine and dance until dawn as Monti transforms into a hotspot for late-night cocktails with live DJs at night!

Thirteen Duxton Hill

Tucked away in a quiet corner of 13 Duxton Hill sits the aptly-named Thirteen Duxton Hill, the brainchild of Melbourne chef John-Paul Fiechtner (JP) and sommelier-cum-manager Sally Humble. The feeling we get when we first visited Thirteen is something akin to stepping into someone’s home. The warmly-lit ambience and Chef JP and Sally’s laid-back hospitality allow diners to immediately feel at ease. Everything about Thirteen embodies their handiwork: from the interior décor of the restaurant, which was designed and renovated by the owners themselves, down to the intricate menu, done omakase, that changes and are handwritten daily.

Despite being a newcomer in Singapore’s competitive restaurant scene, we are blown away with Thirteen’s exemplary dishes. Chef JP’s vast experience cooking in international kitchens translates beautifully into his creations. We are mildly obsessed with his Summertime Campfire Marshmallow – baked white chocolate topped with fresh cherries, nestled in a helping of gently burnt smoking Swiss meringue – which Sally describes as evoking the nostalgia of having toasted marshmallows with fresh picked berries on a camping trip.

If you fancy fine dining but hate the pretension, a visit to Thirteen Duxton Hill is definitely a must!

Upper Place

Nestled on the rooftop of WANGZ Hotel, Upper Place is an elegant yet unpretentious new joint with a menu of Eurocentric small plates infused with occasional Asian influences.

The Reconstructed Laksa Risotto ($27++) is an immediate hit, made with Boston lobster, Hokkaido scallop, market catch, coconut foam, and sambal. We’re pretty confident in saying that we’ve never tasted anything quite like this before – the deep flavours of the laksa married with coconut and lobster in the form of a savoury risotto, it’s a bold dish indeed! Another surprise comes in the form of a scrumptious slice of Carrot Cake ($8++) served with cinnamon sorbet. It’s an inspiring dessert and sweet complement to the other dishes.

Set lunches will only set you back $19.90++ for 2 courses or $24++ for three, and with some fabulous views of Tiong Bahru to boot, Upper Place is a new addition to the Singapore dining scene that we’re excited to visit again.

Find it at 231 Outram Road (rooftop of WANGZ Hotel)

5. Sinfonia Ristorante

This 128-seat Italian showstopper opened in mid-December at The Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall, a new addition to the restaurant-in-restored-heritage-building trend (not that we’re complaining). Davide Oldani, chef-owner of one Michelin-starred D’O Restaurant in Milan who has also cooked for A-listers like Giorgio Armani, is a proponent of accessible and ‘democratic’ fine dining that can please all tastes while not totally breaking the bank.

At FOO’D you can expect an exquisite atmosphere alongside modern Italian dishes like the hearty Beef Cheek with red wine reduction & trout pearls, or for a true standout try the 65 degree Soft Foie-Gras with salted biscuit, roasted Williams pear, and grapefruit sorbet. Lunch is priced at S$45++ for three courses and S$52++ for four courses, while the dinner damage is S$138++ for five courses and S$168++ for seven courses.

Reservations at his Milan joint are hard to come by, so you should definitely give FOO’D a taste before the crowds catch on!

po_food_communal-1

Po Restaurant

As The Warehouse Hotel’s flagship restaurant, Po celebrates the richness of Singaporean dishes with a contemporary touch. Its name pays homage to the phrase popo, which means grandmother in mandarin.

Sourcing only the finest Asian ingredients, almost every element of Po’s dishes is made from scratch. We recommend Po’s Kurobuta Char Siew ($19), a 24-hour sous-vide barbecued pork collar, for an indulgent start. For something slightly closer to home, try the Squid Ink Calamari ($16), where rings of fresh squid are dipped in squid ink batter and deep fried, served with a traditional salted duck egg sauce. We find Po’s Lobster Somen ($49) incredibly tempting with its collagen-rich shark bone & pig trotter broth, fresh fish maw, and Maine lobster tail.

PORTA Fine Food & Import Company

We can’t help but be drawn to PORTA at Park Hotel Clarke Quay, and it isn’t difficult to see why: its homey feel is inspired by the honesty and beauty of Clarke Quay’s old colonial days.

Just 31, Chef Michael Suyanto of PORTA has amassed 12 years worth of culinary experience, where much of his career was spent honing his skills in international luxury 5-star hotels and the Les Amis Group. Expect dishes that masterfully combine fresh produce and seasonal flavours such as the Ravioles de Royans ($22), a comforting vegetarian dish consisting of two-cheese filling ravioles served in a creamy and tangy sauce, topped with Emmental cheese sprinkles. On the other hand, we’re sure that meat-lovers will love the highly-marbled Iberian Pork Secreto ($26), a pork shoulder blade done sous-vide for four hours and roasted to perfection. This tender piece of meat is then glazed with a glistening of Pommery mustard and served with a creamy, tangy honey mustard mash. If these two dishes alone aren’t enough to whet your appetite, then we don’t know what will!

Teepee Bar & Restaurant

A typical scene at Teepee Bar & Restaurant goes a little something like this: tables of friends enjoying meals and conversations over tinkling of highballs while Reggaeton tracks play gently in the background.

Teepee combines comforting rice bowls and homey burgers with delicious drinks. The people behind the food are generous with the premium ingredients and spices as well; their gourmet burgers and rice bowls are packed with flavours that will thrill your taste buds. We’re excited to try their Spiced Kimchi Beef Burger ($19) – a tender beef patty with a Korean twist of kimchi and cheese – and the Teepee Wagyu Beef Bowl ($24) that’s complemented by a 63C egg, sautéed kale, and leek sauce. Likewise, the lineup for their drinks menu is not to be missed.

Aside from specialty coffees and signature cocktails, Teepee has a number of unique creations with enticing names such as the Chamomilla — a piquant blend of chamomile infused gin, Tougarashi Umeshu, notes of Jasmine and lemon. With a name like that, we’re sold even before we take a sip!

Akira Back

Here’s something that we’re sure everyone is excited about. With six internationally-renowned restaurants already under his belt, Korean-born celebrity chef Akira Back adds another with the debut of his signature restaurant at JW Marriott Singapore South Beach.

Showcasing modern Japanese cuisine with Korean accents and culinary influences from around the world, Akira Back serves up an array of innovative dishes centered on seasonal produce and artisanal ingredients. His rendition of a Tuna Pizza ($25) is a refreshing take from the usual. A light, crispy tortilla crust layered with thinly sliced raw tuna, it’s definitely something we would have again and again. Another dish that stood out for us is the Pop Rockin’ ($17), a signature roll made with spicy crab, asparagus, cucumber and – believe it or not – pop rocks. Those bad boys alone make it a standout dish in our eyes.

While celebrity chefs tend to take a more serious view of food, Chef Akira Back adds a dash of ‘cool’ to the word culinary. His unique and quirky creations are definitely something we can all get in on!

New Ubin Seafood

Well-loved by both locals and visitors alike, New Ubin Seafood definitely isn’t a new kid on the block but we wouldn’t miss giving their relocation to Bukit Timah a shoutout. Keeping to tradition, the usual suspects are still on the menu: Great Shovel Nose Ray, Chilli Crab and their (notorious) U.S. Angus Rib-eye Steak with Heart Attack Fried Rice.

Just in case you’ve been kept in the dark about their Heart Attack Fried Rice, just imagine a steaming plate of rice tossed in fat that’s rendered from the aforementioned steak – need we say more? Want. Some. Now.

Try the drool-worthy Half Farmer Chicken, marinated with a special house made sauce, drizzled with a gravy of your choice. Chow down on their equally impressive Tomahawk Australian Wagyu, prepared using Wagyu beef with a favorable marbling score of 5 which ensures absolute tenderness. the-bunker

Bunker

Wanna take refuge from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok? The cool concrete interiors of Bunker provide just that, along with an extremely hospitable staff to boot. Enjoy fabulous American cuisine dished out by Chef Arnold Marcella, who was a protege under two-Michelin-star Chef Paul Liebrandt and former head of The Elm in New York City. Expect occasional Asian flavours and influences in some of the dishes like the freshly cut Kampachi Sashimi, with sweet Hokkaido sea urchin and refreshing daikon slices as sides. For a more Western oriented palate try the Smoked Wagyu Beef Rib (for two), which is exceptionally tender and juicy thanks to a cooking process takes 24 hours. To complete the experience refresh yourself with a Paloma Cocktail (a tequila based cocktail with grapefruit soda, Campari, candied orange, and pineapple). Trust us: the bartenders at Bunker know what they’re doing.

Morimoto Bangkok

Expect no less than perfection from an Iron Chef! We aren’t sure if Chef Masaharu Morimoto rules the kitchen with an iron fist but with over 10 restaurants around the world he must be doing something right. This finely decorated restaurant offers an innovative mix of traditional Japanese and fusion dishes. Along with the multi-course omakase dinner offered at the sushi bar, diners can enjoy the drool-worthy Black Cod Braised in Thick Ginger Soy – a signature Morimoto dish. Or take your evening to the next level of extravagance with the Chawanmushi served with foie gras and oysters. East meets West and good food meets our tummies at Morimoto Bangkok!

suhringImage Source

Suhring

Housed in a beautiful two storey building, Suhring offers the kind of cosy environment that makes you feel immediately at home. Their homestyle German cooking also delivers some much needed kudos to an oft overlooked region of cuisine. Apart from obvious choices such as Roasted Knuckle of Pork, twin chefs Thomas and Mathias Suhring showcase other heritage-rich dishes like Schwäbische Käsespätzle, a German style pasta cooked with Belper Knolle (a rich and herby cheese made from cow’s milk). Pair their tasty dishes with wine curated by the restaurant’s in-house sommelier and step out into the Winter Garden to enjoy a starry Bangkok evening after a hearty meal.

Dishes We Love: Salt Meadow Lamb from Piet van den Berg, Schwäbische Käsespätzle, Himmel & Erde, Spiced Tomato Cracker, Frankfurter Grüne Soße

Based on the success of its other outlets around the globe, Jamie’s Italian (opening in December) is sure to be a hit. As expected from the Jamie brand, the Bangkok branch will only be using high quality ingredients that are not only fresh, but sustainably sourced as well. You can expect signature dishes such as the flavourful Tagliatelle Bolognese, served with slow cooked pork, beef, and red wine sauce. Try the Funghi Misti Pizza for the ultimate umami boost. Touché Hombre

Imagine teleporting yourself to the other side of the world into a cozy seat at a charming restaurant to enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine. Fortunately, Touché Hombre spares us the trouble with an accessible alternative right in the heart of Bangkok. House-made tortillas are the name of the game here, with a variety of fillings to satiate every culinary craving. You’ll also enjoy mean seafood dishes and the fan-favourite Elotes Callejeros, a superbly grilled corn cob with chipotle mayo and cotija cheese. Feeling thirsty? Sip some expertly crafted cocktails from their wide variety of agave spirits. This, folks, is a good hombre.

lady-brett-72-courtyardlady-brett-72-2

Lady Brett 72 Courtyard

Situated at the lower level of a two storey building, Lady Brett 72 Courtyard is a cozy joint serving up a variety of barbequed delights. The team here prepares all of their grilled fare in a Josper BBQ oven, fired up with binchotan hardwood charcoal and hickory wood chips; this advanced BBQ technology results in an incredible flavour you’ll be longing for long after you’ve finished your meal. (We personally can’t get enough of the absolutely delicious Dry Aged Tomahawk, served with creamy spinach and roasted garlic.) If you’re searching for a spot with a rustic and open concept that dishes out great food, then this is the place for you.

Dishes We Love: Grilled Chicken Burger, Dry aged Tomahawk, Baby Octopus, Phuket Pink Snapper, Banana Cream Pie

Click here for more info on Lady Brett Courtyard

il-fumo

Il Fumo Restaurant and Bar

Il Fumo is the Italian word for smoke, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to guess how they prepare the nosh here. They take their grilling seriously and have painstakingly perfected the process: different types of wood are used for different types of produce (cherry for meats, olive for fish, and almond for delicate seafood). Ingredients are sourced directly from Spain and Italy, and the execution is just as authentic. There’s much to say about the freshness and quality of the ingredients, but we advise you try it out yourself!

Dishes We Love: Paccheri Pasta, Rubia Gallega Beef, Canadian Lobster, Octopus, Frutta Grigliata

Book a table at Il Fumo Restaurant and Bar.

laemgate-infinite

laemgate.jpg

Laemgate Infinite

Strictly speaking, Laemgate is not exactly a new restaurant – it merely moved to a new nest this year. This gives us an excuse to mention them because they really are that good. Expect a huge spread of quality catches from Chonburi and to-die-for oysters from their partner farm as part of their à la carte seafood buffet. We highly recommend the Nam Prik Khai Pu, whose smooth crab roe is complemented with fragrant Thai chilli paste. For desserts, try the crispy roti served with either lime or Thai tea ice cream. Just be sure to come on an empty stomach.

Dishes We Love: Flavoured Grilled Pork, Oysters, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Roti, Nam Prik Khai Pu

10. Honey

If you happened to be strolling by Honey you would be hard-pressed to stop yourself from entering the gorgeous cafe. With a modern and crisp interior, Honey exhibits an exceptionally hospitable vibe that makes you want to spend your whole morning there. Other than the cafe usuals, the menu is finely tuned to reflect the name of the restaurant; honey is incorporated in many of the dishes. Notables include the sinful Honey-Glazed Chicken Wings, an innovative Honey Caesar Parmigiano Salad, and Chicken Waffles served with honey ginger sauce. Hungry yet? Consider yourself an exuberant Winnie the Pooh who’s just stumbled upon a treasure trove of honey!

Dishes We Love: Honey-Glazed Chicken Wings, Honey Butter Pancake, Parma Ham & White Peach Open Sandwich, Beef Ragout Rigatoni tossed with Thyme.

matcha-tenImage Source

Matcha Ten

It’s dessert time somewhere, is it not? Functioning as the dessert arm of Tenyuu Grand, Matcha Ten serves sweet treats guaranteed to put a spring in your step. Apart from the the plethora of matcha desserts, be sure to check out the luxuriant Fudge Lava (it’s guaranteed to bring you straight to chocolate nirvana). If you’re still hungry, tuck into a more substantial dish like the Egg Skillet, which is made with a plethora of goodness: duck eggs, chorizo, salami, mushrooms, and cherry tomatoes. Despite its reputation as a dessert cafe, we’re egg-static they serve savoury grub here.

Dishes We Love: Waffle with Grilled Bacon and Eggs, Egg Skillet, Shaved Mineral Water Kakigori, Fudge Lava

Shugaa Dessert Bar

Our second dessert stop has been giving diners quite the rush in 2016. Fancy stepping into a dreamy and magical world? Find a seat at Shugaa and you might feel as if  you’ve floated into wonderland. The charming pastel colours and crystal theme complement the delicate desserts exceptionally well. Opt for the freshly baked Spinach Puffs for a savoury bite, or the Tomoko – an almond chocolate brownie smothered with a blend of hazelnut, caramel and miso mousse –  if you have a craving for chocolate. If that’s too much sugar, feel free to play with the cute wooden animal friends near the sugar-like spiral staircase. That should keep the Shugaa rush at bay.

Fresh Eats: 11 New Restaurants in Singapore You Need to Try this December

From themed cafés (hint: Gudetama & Friends) to some seriously indulgent bites, here are 11 spots that either just opened or are opening soon this December guaranteed to take you to culinary heaven and beyond.

new-rest-dec-gudetama

Gudetama Cafe

Just a few days ago the ever-popular lazy egg, Gudetama, finally manifested into a silly and delicious home in Suntec City! Local brands Joe & Dough and The Soup Spoon teamed up to bring this themed cafe to life, with a small but focused menu entirely inspired by the Gudetama character. See above: Gudetama whining ‘nua’ (Hokkien for lazy) atop chargrilled New Zealand grass-fed Angus Ribeye in the ‘Rib-”I” Don’t Care’ ($28.5++). This bad boy comes smothered in a wild mushroom sauce alongside grilled veggies and sweet potato mash. With some surprisingly innovative bites like the Gudetama Lobster Onsen ($16++), and the ‘Shoyu Ramen’ ($21.5++), which is actually chocolate mousse cake, don’t expect the food to be lazy like Gudetama. Oh, and be sure to  clear some memory on your phone, ‘cause the animated walls, egg-shaped booths, photogenic presentation, and ‘food playground’ (complete with a Gudetama water fountain) all provide ample opportunity for photos perfect for social sharing.

Find it at #01-361 Suntec City Mall, 3 Temasek Boulevard
Book a table at Gudetama Cafe.

plentyfull_french_toast_jpg_1479904206

Plentyfull

Okay so we cheated a bit – Plentyfull has been open since August, but it has only recently started to gain notoriety so check it out before the New Year brings new crowds! This all-day multi-concept restaurant, patisserie, and gourmet grocer tucked away in Millenia Walk provides honest homemade meals using seasonal produce sourced from both international and local farmers. The customizable lunch grain bowl options are plentiful, and dinner serves up more hearty plates like the Thai Roasted Chicken with Garlic & Cilantro and House-Smoked Mussels on Toast. You could also elect to swing by the retail section (which is managed by Little Farms) and snag some earthy nut milks, shakes, and healthy snacks to go. Just remember, whether you’re chowing down on cakes and coffee or a Quinoa Bowl, the preservative-free food is all made from scratch, and is quite the nourishing oasis amidst the frenzy of the city center.

Find it at 9 Raffles Boulevard, #01-79/80, Millenia Walk
Book a table at Plentyfull.

greyhound

Greyhound Café

With outlets already in Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, and Beijing, this famous Bangkok café is FINALLY setting up shop in The Lion City. The soft launch is scheduled for 5 December, boasting 100 seats in a modern first floor setting at Paragon Orchard and a casual fusion food concept aligned with the original Bangkok chain. You can expect Greyhound signatures like the oft-blogged-about Fried Chicken Wings, a scrumptious Fried Rice Noodle with Chicken & Dried Squid, and the totally uncomplicated ‘Complicated Noodle’ that requires a bit of self-assembly before you can enjoy its fresh palate of Southeast Asian flavours.

Find it at Paragon Shopping Mall, 290 Orchard Road, #01-25/25A
Click here for more info on Greyhound Cafe.

yellow-cab-2

Yellow Cab Pizza & Co.

Yellow Cab Pizza Co. first opened back in 2001 with a simple mission: ‘to share a slice of New York with the rest of the world’. With 130+ stores in six countries currently in operation and over 100 new outlets set to open in the near future (including our own spot here in S’pore opening on 9 December!) this is an American-Italian casual dining concept we can totally get behind. You might be inclined to expect inferior quality from such a rapidly expanding brand, but fear not. Yellow Cab uses only premium ingredients and knows how to spin up a truly authentic New York-style pie – crisp and slightly charred but dense and chewy in the middle with oozing layers of cheese and generous toppings. This is the real deal, folks. Expect a space that reinforces the gritty NYC feel, complete with an open kitchen, exposed pipes, and graffiti, all nestled in CityLink Mall at City Hall.

Find it at CityLink Mall, B1-01/02
Book a table at Yellow Cab Pizza & Co.

alter-ego

Alter Ego (by A Poke Theory)

In other ‘new-restaurant-family-addition’ news, A Poke Theory has just given birth to a decadently sinful alter ego. Head over to Raffles Ave for a lavish dip into savoury grilled cheeses, ‘primal’ buffalo wings, short rib melts, craft beer, and more at Alter Ego. Despite its recent opening in early November it has already gained prominence for dishes like the Loaded Taters (above), and the Salted Yolk Pork Ribs. Even though the team still serves up healthy fare by day a la Poke Theory (think smoothies & poke bowls), come nighttime they’re going for all out indulgence: ‘forget clean eating’ is one of Alter Ego’s deliciously sinister mottos. If lunch is a salad, then dinner can be elbow deep in butter and cheese fries, followed by one craft beer after another because, hey, you deserve it! Sounds like cheat day is today.

Find it at 8 Raffles Avenue, #01-13D
Click here for more info on Alter Ego.

grignoter_steak_frites_jpg_1478177828

Grignoter by Chef Justin Quek

Local Celebrity Chef, Justin Quek, famed for his refined French cuisine, is the man behind Grignoter, a bistro-bar specializing in the fine wines of Bordeaux alongside a selection of elevated bar bites. For those stumbling over the name, ‘grignoter’ actually means ‘nibble’ in French, though the nibbles here come with a subtle touch of luxury. Think a yakitori-style grilled chicken liver, the deep gamey flavours offset by a tart glaze of Bordeaux reduction. More substantial bites find us in the Croque Monsieur and Steak Frites territory, comfort foods that pair well with the full-bodied wines on the list. So grab a bottle, order some bites, and put your feet up for that sunny Bordeaux experience without having to leave our little island.

Find it at 2 Teck Lim Road.

kams-roast

Kam’s Roast

In case you’ve been living under a foodless rock this November, we’re here to spread the tasty word – Hong Kong’s world-famous Michelin-starred Kam’s Roast has landed in Singapore, opened on 19 Nov. People have been queuing like it’s their job to get a taste of Kam’s signature meats – so what’s the verdict? Under careful supervision from the original HK chefs, the team here totally succeeds in replicating the same top-quality fare that earned the original its Michelin fame. Although there is no signature goose on the menu due to import restrictions, the other options are far from a letdown: the ‘Toro’ Char Siu ($22.80++) is an astounding display of tender & rich char siu fit for the gods, and the dizzying array of noodle dishes are of the highest quality and flavour … perhaps because the noodles are flown in daily by Singapore Airlines(!). That’s an A+ for dedication, and an equally impressive score for deliciousness.

Find it at 9 Scotts Road, #01-04/05/06/07, Pacific Plaza

central-perk-sg

Central Perk SG

The Lion City will be getting a touch friendlier this month when Central Perk Cafe, the real-life version of the coffee shop hangout in everyone’s favourite ‘90’s TV show Friends, opens in mid-December. It’s located in a rather nondescript location of Central Mall near Clarke Quay, and filled with over 300 square meters of guaranteed selfie ready paraphernalia (think a faux NYC al fresco patio, a replica of Monica’s apartment, an entire wall dedicated to Ross, and the iconic café couch).

On the F&B side of things, the team worked tirelessly to create 6 custom coffee blends, each based on a different main character to replicate personality traits in the flavour profiles. Try the Rachel, whose smooth sweetness is perfect for a latté, or the rich and robust Joey perfect for a long black wake up call. The Friends-themed nosh is a tad pricy (it is supposed to be NYC, after all), but at an unparalleled level of quality for a themed joint. Be sure to try ‘Joey’s 2 Pizzas’ – one features a guacamole base with Cajun prawns, the other comes loaded pumpkin puree & pepperoni. This is the only Central Perk Cafe licensed by Warner Brothers outside of the US, so expect extreme attention-to-detail, official merchandise on sale, delicious grub, and some serious coffee kicks.

Find it at Central Mall, 1 Magazine Road #01-01
Book a table at Central Perk.

mex_out_carne_asada_tacos

Barrio by Mex-Out (VivoCity)

Barrio by Mex-Out is not a new establishment per se, but their spankin’ new outlet opening in VivoCity has us all kinds of excited. You can expect casual but quality (and often messy) American-Mexican eats, like the yummy Pulled Pork Tacos, to a variety of burritos, bowls, quesadillas, and more. Can’t decide? You should definitely opt for the absurdly scrumptious Buttermilk Fried Chicken Burger deep fried in beer batter and served on a brioche bun. It conveniently goes down well with an ice cold margarita and a side of nachos. Barrio is a casual and contemporary space perfect for afternoon eats while strolling through VivoCity – though we may be guilty of heading on over just for Barrio.

Find it at #01-116 Vivo City, 1 Harbourfront Walk
Click here for more info on Barrio by Mex-Out.

botanist

Botanist

Botanist is a new and cozy, semi-hidden café that opened in mid-November along Neil Road. Walk past the unassuming white shop house to find the wall mural leading to the entrance, where you can often spot a blackboard adorned with daily specials. Weekend brunch has already become a packed affair, boasting a variety of cuisines that somehow manage to surpass the hype. We absolutely love the Maple Pancake ($18 nett) and Breakfast Platter ($23 nett), but our heart truly belongs to the uniquely flavoured Corn Fritters ($18 nett): pan fried bits of heaven served with sweet tomato salsa, hummus, guacamole, poached egg, and baby spinach tossed in yuzu vinaigrette. Grab a long black for $4.5 or a latte for just $5, either of which makes for a great chill afternoon caffeine fix in the beautiful neighborhood. It’s a simple, honest concept with a mainly outdoor dining area that we’re seriously digging this December.

Find it at 74 Neil Road
Click here for more info on Botanist.

tunglok-teahouse

Tunglok Teahouse

The Tunglok brand is synonymous with excellence, serving up quality Chinese fare across several concepts and outlets throughout the city. The newly refurbished Tunglok Teahouse at Novena boasts an automated food ordering and delivery system that frankly is just a whole lot of fun. Diners order on an iPad and dishes come in a perfectly timed fashion along a conveyor belt directly to your table. While dim sum standards are done exceptionally well here, you won’t leave disappointed if you expand your horizons and indulge into the house specialties Try the sublime Steamed Siew Mai with Quail Egg & Truffle (4 pcs, $5.8++), the yolk bursting in the middle complements the dash of truffle atop the shrimp perfectly. A Teahouse Signature Rice Roll ($7.8++) reinvents cheong fun in a sinfully delicious deep fried way that you’ll have to taste for yourself. The setting is comprised of mostly small booths of 4, though there are still lazy susans with traditional ordering options for those less technologically-inclined (we see you, grandma!).

Fresh Eats: 8 New Restaurants in Singapore You Need to Try this November

From fusion bites to Michelin-starred ramen, tapas to Thai beef noodles and a whole lot more, here are 8 spots that either just opened or are opening soon guaranteed to transport your tummy to a happy place.

Salmon Poke.jpg

Ninja Cut

This new concept by Ninja Bowl recently opened its doors, but don’t mistake the ‘younger sibling’ as being any less awesome. Here you can find a new menu with several slightly more indulgent versions of Ninja Bowl options. Some of our personal favourites are the showstopping Truffle Polenta Mash ($18), a refreshing salmon & avocado based ‘Wakiki Surf’ bowl (pictured above, $16), and the Marvellous Matcha hotcake ($16). Savoury all-day brunch (24-hour braised Japanese curry beef cheek ON TOP of a grilled cheese sandwich?! Yes, please!), some healthier (but equally tasty) bowl options, and a surprisingly outstanding coffee and drink selection makes this an absolute must-try.

Find it at 32 Seah Street
Book a table at Ninja Cut.

tom-yum_

Ash & Char

From the team behind Rise & Grind Coffee Co (the fab Bukit Timah brunch spot) comes Ash & Char: a laidback joint that delivers a more refined menu for lunch and dinner at Telok Ayer. Expect substantial mains in the form of pastas, burgers, and bowls, while still casual and under $20, along with all the coffee and dessert options you’d crave at a great café. One of the most popular dishes is the Tomyum Seafood Pasta ($17++), a staple at Rise & Grind that they were smart enough to bring over in all its original glory. Other standouts include the Truffled Bacon & Mushroom Carbonara ($15++) and Korean Chicken Burger ($15++).

Find Ash & Char at 21 McCallum St

tsuta-ramen

Tsuta Ramen

The world’s first and only Michelin-starred ramen joint from Tokyo is FINALLY opening in Singapore on the 6th of November. We were lucky enough to score an exclusive pre-opening tasting with the staff, and let’s just say this ramen is the stuff of legends: Shoyu Soba with truffle sauce and the Ajitama Char Siu Shoyu Soba don’t just live up to the hype, they surpass all expectations of how truly outstanding ramen should taste. Also, you had best prepare yourself for the most perfectly cooked eggs you will ever sink your teeth (and chopsticks) into.

FOC Sentosa

This is is the closest you’ll get to Barcelona without hopping on a plane. Think superb tapas backed by a seriously talented (and award-winning) kitchen combined with a top-notch bar menu, served at a ridiculously beautiful and relaxing beachside spot. FOC’s Hong Kong Street location is already well-known for its impeccable menu, and you can expect a similar focus on Mediterranean fare at Sentosa: heavy on grilled fish & meats, paellas, and of course tapas. Lounge in the hammocks or dine by the pool deck, just be sure to try the Beetroot Gazpacho w/ Olive Oil Ice Cream ($12++), and the Iberian Pork Paella ($18++), all with a refreshingly smooth Matcha Colada ($16++) in hand of course.

kin-cow

Kin Cow

Now is the perfect time to experience Kin Cow’s traditional kuay teow neua (Thai beef noodles) as the team has already worked out all the opening kinks. This Thailand export boasts 11 outlets back home, and the newly opened S’pore location delivers the quality and authenticity you’d expect from a family owned operation. Bowls range from the simpler Brisket ($10.90) to the fancier Wagyu ($22.90) with options in between, solid side dishes, and delectable Thai desserts like the creamy Coconut Ice Cream. The portions aren’t exactly gigantic, but you’ll get really high quality ingredients with this one, as well as a flavour experience that most cheaper options simply can’t match.

Find Kin Cow at 133 New Bridge Road in Chinatown Point, #02-34

Little Bastard

Hidden within the already quite hidden Refinery along King George’s Ave, Little Bastard bills itself as ‘not your average illegitimate child’, as it offers up a myriad of Asian explorations with a focus on Thai and Chinese influences. Expect modern fusion in the form of Cold Tom Yum Udon ($20++), Sichuan Beef Tartare w/ Century Egg ($20++), Sous Vide Lemon Barley Gin ($18++), and other impressively inspired concoctions. One of the more curiosity-piquing options recently opened, you’d be remiss not to give this one a taste.

Find Little Bastard at 115 King’s George Avenue – walk into The Refinery and tell the service staff that you are looking for Little Bastard.

pim-pam

PIM PAM by FOC

The team at FOC have clearly been busy, with their new concept PIM PAM opening just days ago along Orchard Road near Tanglin. You can swing by from breakfast to tippling time, as this ‘gastro-bodega inspired by the Barcelona tapas and wine culture’ offers all-day dining options in addition to a retail corner where you can grab a variety of bites to go. Some of our favourite plates are the Spinach & Pine Nut Croquetas, PIM PAM Migas, and the Straciatella Salad.

Man Man Japanese Unagi Restaurant

Teppei Yamashita has had incredible success with his series of Japanese concepts, the most popular being Teppei Japanese Restaurant, where an Omakase dinner requires a reservation more than three months(!) in advance. Next up? Man Man Unagi, a grilled eel concept on Keong Saik. Just check out the reviews and it’s quite clear: insane kitchen expertise, huge queues, and lots of ‘the best eel I’ve had outside of Japan’ types of comments. The pricing is fantastic for the quality and portions, as you can expect to spend under $30 a person and leave with a belly full of eel that could not be fresher – it’s flown in from Aichi prefecture, plucked from a tank, then sliced and cooked in a glass front kitchen for patrons to watch live.
