Feel fancy at this not-so fancy schmancy place. The grey, white, and black interior with a pop of pink makes the space minimalistic, yet sophisticated at the same time. Let the drinks and food do the talking: kick off the night with a couple of interesting drinks from their Pollen Cocktail Menu, including Chrysanthemum (vodka with carrot juice) and the all-time favourite Rose (gin, peach, ginger beer, and sage). The Charred Octopus, cooked with warm salsa, chervil, and caramelised pineapples has the perfect amount of chew with a tender freshness that’s further enhanced by the flavours.

9 Amazing Dishes to try from 4 Stellar Spots at Dempsey

When visiting the posh neighbourhood of Dempsey, you might be spoiled for choice. From decadent award-winning Peranakan cuisine to the heritage tempura dishes, we’ll give you the low down on the different eateries and which dishes stood out best.

Candlenut, A Taste of Peranakan Pleasure

CN - Interior 2018
Welcome to Candlenut, the world’s first and only Peranakan restaurant with a Michelin-star. And it’s easy to see why:  pairing excellent service and phenomenal food with an ambience that’s both inviting and exciting, rest assured that your experience at Candlenut will be unparalleled.

When a restaurant serves rendang so tender that it melts in your mouth, you know it’s a winner. Their Wagyu Beef Rendang, with heartwarming spices and bursting with flavour, is a must-have.

CN---Blue-Swimmer-Crab-Curry---Chope
One of the highlights we can’t get enough of at Candlenut is the Blue Swimmer Crab Curry. Rest assured that this golden bowl of creamy, spicy goodness will leave your taste buds satisfied with its piquant Assam notes with hints of Kaffir lime. They don’t skimp on the ingredients either, as this appetising curry is made with loads of fresh crabs that lend it a soft, oceanic flavour.

Candlenut-Buah-Keluak-Ice-Cream.jpg
Staying true to its roots, Candlenut introduces desserts with a Peranakan flair as well. One such creation is their Buah Keluak Ice Cream. Made with 90% buah keluak base and 10% chocolate, it’s definitely a dish that stands out in terms of flavour and uniqueness. The crackling crumble base adds texture to the smooth, creamy frozen delight.

Experience Casual Japanese at Ippoh Tempura Bar by Ginza Ippoh

IP---Chef-Seki---Chope
If you didn’t already know, Osaka’s oldest premium tempura restaurant Ippoh sets up its first Southeast Asian outlet at COMO Dempsey.

The soft lighting and simple décor at this tiny tempura house will have you feeling right at home once you step in through the rather private entrance. The ambience here maintains cosy and minimalist, with only a few bar counter eats and a couple of tables. From its interiors down to the custom-made bowls and utensils, everything here is made with a personal touch. If you’re looking for an intimate moment either alone or with a significant other, this is the perfect spot.

IMG_9873
Ippoh Tempura Bar prides itself with their omakase menu, but lunch crowds hankering for a quick fix will be happy to know that they serve lunch sets as well. Starting with the house-made goma tofu, it’s a classic example of the chef’s impeccable skills. The tofu is made with ground sesame seeds, and its texture is unlike usual store-bought tofu: slightly firm with a gentle fragrance, every mouthful is invigorating.

With Chef Masaru Seki’s immaculate tempura skills, diners are able to sample the flavours of the fresh ingredients encased in the delicate, crispy batter. Enjoy them with a bowl of rice or opt for cold somen noodles for something more refreshing.

A Contemporary Dining Experience at The Dempsey Cookhouse & Bar

TDCB Interior
Looking for an upscale meal? The Dempsey Cookhouse & Bar is your best bet. Elegantly decorated with marble table tops and columns, aluminium furnishings, and lush greenery, we can’t help but be charmed by the friendly and relaxed ambience. Dishing out the effortlessly gorgeous creations, Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten introduces modern European dishes with local interpretations that represent the melting pot of cultures in Singapore.

A crowd favourite at Dempsey’s Cookhouse is the Crispy Salmon Sushi. The sushi rice is fried to a satisfying crisp, and carrot-orange salmon sashimi glazed with soy sauce is added on top of the crispy rice with a touch of chipotle mayo and mint leaf that tie all the flavours together. The delicate Egg Caviar, on the other hand, is addicting with its smooth egg whites rendered flavourful with a generous dollop of caviar.

IMG_0288
When it comes to pizza, ultimate indulgence lies in the Black Truffle & Fontina Pizza. Carefully crafted and baked in a cherry wood oven, the pie is spread generously with French black truffle paste and cheese.

Decked out in industrial chic furnishings and suspended greenery on the ceilings, the peaceful ambience at this establishment will enchant you.

IMG_0356
We were smitten by COMO’s Snapper Curry, served with fluffy saffron rice. The thick, decadent curry is made with coconut milk and generous servings of snapper that adds depth to the sauce. Vegan options for their dishes are also available, which makes it the perfect spot for any diner regardless of their dietary restrictions.

The star dish, however, is the Parfait that had us all in awe. Made with Butterfly Pea flowers, pineapple, and crushed lemongrass ice, this refreshing dessert is inspired by the local ice cream sandwich.

Where would your last meal be? 9 foodies share their thoughts.

We always ask each other where to go for lunch every day, but what if you had to choose a meal for your last day on earth? Posing this question to our peeps in Chope, they share their favourite restaurants and dishes after giving it some serious thought.

Yufeng

“I can’t get enough of seafood! If I could have one last meal, it would be a seafood spread from JUMBO Seafood. Ever since I tried their Chili Crab, I was hooked!”

Paul

“My top pick is Wahiro, hands down. This Japanese eatery dishes out really amazing Kushiyaki that I could just have 3 times a day, 7 days a week! I had to go off to America for my studies and it would be the only dish I crave for when I miss home.”

michel

“One of the things I love about Singapore is Peranakan cuisine, and the restaurant that I think does it best is at Blue Ginger. I can just order anything on the menu and it will be amazing! Another restaurant that’s a close contender is Garibaldi Italian Restaurant and Bar.”

Japneet

“Nothing can beat my mum’s cooking! That would be my last meal. Though if I had to name a restaurant to try before I leave Singapore, I would love to try The Library, this hidden speakeasy bar that requires a password before entering. I think it’s really cool!”

nicol

“I absolutely love the Herbal Roast Duck from Dian Xiao Er. The combination of succulent roast duck and Chinese herbs is phenomenal! If I could, I’d combine that with a good dim sum spread at No Signboard Seafood at Vivocity too!”

Melisa

“If I’m going to die, I wanna eat all the food in the world, so I will choose The Line. Their international line-up is amazing. You know what’s the best part? Their never-ending array of desserts! Like, who could say no to that?”

alexis

“If I had only a day left to live, I’d choose the Champagne Brunch at Brasserie Les Saveurs. From canapés to tantalising main courses paired with sommelier’s selection of wines and champagne, a French pampering would be a good way to go.”

Dinesh

“I’d celebrate (or mourn) my last day on earth at Basilico by stuffing myself silly with cold cuts, cheese, and copious amounts of wine. Hedonism at its finest!”

Enxian

“Since I’m going to die, I might as well eat all the sinful stuff! Alter Ego has always been my top pick. I would like to have their Pizza Fries one last time because it’s one of the best I’ve ever had. Not forgetting their Loaded Taters, too!”

Prost! 8 Places To Celebrate Oktoberfest 2018

Held annually in Bavaria, Munich, Germany (phew! What a mouthful), Oktoberfest is a folk festival that is synonymous with great company, great beer, and great times! Can’t fly to Germany to celebrate this historic festival? Fret not as we’ve gathered 8 places in Singapore where you can taste authentic German beer and still bask in the spirit of Oktoberfest. And if you’re a beer geek looking for something a little more niche than German beers, be sure to check out these watering holes to get your craft beer fix.

1. Brotzeit

unspecified-1.jpeg

unspecified.jpeg

Practically an institution if you’re looking for all things German, Brotzeit celebrates Oktoberfest with live music and comedic acts like Oktoberfest Oompahband, as well as AnTon & the funny Guys (18 to 21 Oct at the Vivocity outlet). You can also taste all-time Oktoberfest favourites like tender pork collar slow roasted in dark beer sauce, served with soft potato dumplings and tangy sauerkraut; savoury meatloaf served between a soft Kaiser roll and potato salad; and who can forget? Succulent, oven-roasted pork belly that comes with crisp crackling skin, filled with moist bread stuffing. Wash it all down with a Hofbräu Oktoberfestbier (a full-bodied, bottom-fermented speciality beer)!

Book a table at these outlets:

2. Der Biergarten

image.png

image.png

Inspired by traditional beer gardens found in the Bavarian region, Der Biergarten is an unassuming space along Prinsep Street that is perfect for an intimate dinner or a round of drinks with friends. Come 16 October, gather a couple of mates (or girlfriends) and celebrate Oktoberfest with performances from AnTon & the funny Guys, a live band, and perhaps even a game of pool. There are also three Oktoberfest special platters ($68) to choose from: the Pork Knuckle Meat Lovers platter; a German Butcher Platter with Pork Jelly; or for those on a liquid diet – a 4 pint Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier set.

German beer aficionados will be pleased to note that traditional drafts like Paulaner Original Münchner Hell Premium Lager, as well as Paulaner Hefe-Weißbier Naturtrüb Wheat Beer,  are available at this fine establishment for $10 a pint.

Find it 48 Prinsep Street, #01-01, Singapore 188677book now

From 19 to 20 October, the popular nightlife spot will be transformed into a German town where you can get lip-smacking German food as well as traditional Bavarian-brewed beer on tap.

The live band performances and carnival games are sure to get you on your feet as you participate in boisterous dancing on tables – as tradition dictates – and merrymaking. And if you’re really lucky, you might just walk away with awesome prizes during the grand lucky draw each night. There’s nothing like a good street party to get the Oktoberfest spirit going. Prost, mein freund (Cheers, my friend)!

Book a table at these partner bars:

Pro tip: get your tickets (each ticket includes one ERDINGER) early as they tend to sell out fast! Advance tickets are going for $15, regular at $20, while event day tickets cost $30. Come dressed in your finest dirndl (the traditional Bavarian dress for beer maids) and you may stand a chance to win prizes!

For an Oktoberfest that literally makes you feel like you’re on top of the world, LeVel33 is the place to go. Located on the 33rd floor of the Marina Bay Financial Centre, the world’s highest urban microbrewery is proud to offer their very own Festbier ($9.88 from opening till 8pm, $12.88 after 8pm) that was specially brewed for the month of October. The brew is best described as a clear straw colour with a frothy white head. The aroma is a buttery, creamy malt, with light caramel notes and is slightly fruity. The flavour is moderate bitter with a light hoppy palate. Light to medium bodied with soft carbonation.

TL;DR, goes best with a Brewery burger: puff malt brioche buns, thick wagyu beef patty, lettuce and cheese. Köstlich (delicious in German)!

As well as specially curated Oktoberfest menus which feature generous platters of crispy pork knuckles, roast pork, and pretzels hanging from a “pretzel tree”. There’s even a family brunch buffet on 14 and 21st October, where your little ones can entertain themselves with activities like props making, glitter tattoos, pretzel bracelets, and alpine hat design.
