8 Local-Inspired Meals to Feed the Singaporean in You!

Celebrate National Day in a truly Singaporean way: by eating! There’s nothing that brings the country together like our unique food, so loosen your belt and showcase your Singaporean appetite with these meals that capture what we love most about Singapore.

1. Urbana Rooftop Bar

Urbana Rooftop Bar ViewUrbana Rooftop Bar Cocktails

Have a bit of fun this National Day and treat yourself to some tipples and bar bites at Urbana Rooftop Bar. Boasting fine wines, signature cocktails, and a beautiful view that stretches all the way to Marina Bay, it’s a great place for a patriotic party. Your favourite hawker center supper of satay and Milo gets a boozy, classy upgrade here too!

The signature Pork and Pineapple Satay is everything we look for in a satay and more. Chunks of tender, juicy pork melt satisfyingly away from the stick, carrying hints of smoky char, while the pineapple provides bursts of sweetness. It also goes perfectly with the Chocoloco, a smooth, creamy, chocolatey cocktail. Made with Baileys, chocolate syrup, and vodka then topped with Milo powder, it’s inspired by none other than our childhood favourite Milo Dinosaur.

It’s in the same building as Urbana Rooftop Bar too, so you can always head upstairs for post-dinner drinks and a spot of supper!

Make sure you’re prepared for some heat, because both their signature items pack quite a punch! Slurp up a generous bowl of Tiger Prawn Laksa Lemak, topped with quail eggs, fishcakes, and huge, sweet tiger prawns. The coconut gravy is a masterpiece, balancing the spiciness with its creamy texture and fragrance. Types of Chicken Rice and Where to Eat Them

A trip to Singapore wouldn’t be complete without a taste of Singapore’s national dish – Hainanese Chicken Rice. There’s just something incredibly satisfying about digging into this simple dish of chicken and fragrant rice that has captured all our hearts.

Sadly, not all chicken rice dishes are created equal. In fact, there are quite a few different spins on this seemingly basic dish. From the dish in its most original form to creations like chicken rice risotto, here are Singapore’s many types of chicken rice, and places to try them.

The Original Singaporean-Style Chicken Rice

How it’s done:

The original version of chicken rice involves steeping chicken in boiling water and blanching until fully cooked. Soak it in cold water immediately to cool it down so the meat doesn’t continue cooking, but remains soft and tender. Instead of just water, the rice is cooked with chicken stock, chicken fat, pandan leaves, ginger, fried garlic and shallots. This myriad of aromatics is what gives the rice its distinct, complex fragrance that has taken the nation (and the world) by storm.

While seemingly simple, this dish is hard to perfect. Some places in Singapore however, have managed to fine-tune their recipes, attracting throngs of people hungry, eager customers daily.

Get a taste at Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice

Tian Tian.jpg
Cr: bbc.com

One of the most popular Hainanese Chicken Rice stalls in Singapore, they’re known for their incredibly tender poached chicken and heavenly rice. According to Anthony Bourdain, the rice is “exceptionally fragrant and flavoursome” and “delicious even on its own”.

The owners don’t just sit back and bask in their glory either! Constantly improving and perfecting their already-amazing recipe, they’ve managed to rack up multiple awards over the years, including a Bib Gourmand. So, if you’re hankering for a plate of their chicken rice, be prepared to queue for it!

Find it at 1 Kadayanallur Street, #01-10/11 Maxwell Food Centre.

More Local Favourites

Other common renditions of chicken rice you’ll be able to find in Singapore are Soy Sauce Chicken Rice and Roasted Chicken Rice.

Soy sauce chicken rice is by braising chicken a soy sauce mixture. This way, the meat has the tenderness of poached chicken with the sweet and savoury flavour of soy sauce. Roasted Chicken Rice, as the name suggests, is traditionally made by roasting the chicken in a wood-fired brick oven. The fat drips off and caramelises, giving you crisp, crackly, and deliciously addictive skin.

Besides the usual sliced chicken and flavoured rice, this popular local dish also comes in the form of rice balls! Similar to Japanese onigiri, chicken rice balls are made by packing and shaping steaming hot chicken rice into spheres and then serving with sliced chicken. They’re not as widespread as your usual chicken rice, but we’ve found some shops that serve chicken rice balls!

Get a taste at Hainan Chicken Rice Ball

This traditional hawker stall opposite Sim Lim Tower has been operating for decades and radiates nostalgia. A set meal here includes two tennis ball-sized chicken rice balls, Hainanese steamed chicken, and braised pork belly. Wash it all down with a bowl of herbal tau pok soup that’s hot and peppery, reminiscent of bak kut teh.

Find it at 3 Dickson Road, Shin Boon Hwa Food Centre, Singapore 209530

Michelin Starred Chicken Rice

Who would have thought our humble hawker centre favourite would make it to Michelin-star glory? This molecular gastronomy restaurant at Esplanade proves that with a few innovative modern touches, even the simples of local dishes can become exquisite delicacies.

Get a taste at Restaurant Labyrinth

At Restaurant Labyrinth, you’ll find chicken rice, but without chicken and rice. Say what? Chef-Owner Han Li Guang has given our local delight an avant-garde spin by extracting the essence of chicken rice and then packing the rich broth into a punchy cube with a texture resembling tofu. It is then served with soy sauce, spicy grated ginger, chopped spring onions, and slivers of cucumber.

3kg chicken rice
Cr: facebook.com

One of Singapore’s iconic dishes, you can find chicken rice all over the country, and for good reason. Everybody from foreigners to local uncles and aunties adores this delicious dish. But how much do you love chicken rice? Could you maybe scarf down a 3kg serving in one sitting?

Prove your love at 289 Xiang Ji Roasted Delights. It hosts a Mega Chicken Rice challenge that gives you the massive plate, worth $28, for free if you can finish it all by yourself.  For those who would rather watch your friends attempt this, don’t forget to order some of the excellent char siew that has just the right amount of char so it remains crispy on the outside, while the fatty meat remains succulent.

Find it at 289H Bukit Batok Street 25, Singapore 657289.
Click here for more information about 289 Xiang Ji Roasted Delights.

2. The Beast

The Beast Burger

The Beast Burger ($125++) is a 7-pound monstrosity that contains (drumroll please):

  • 1.6 pounds of juicy beef patty
  • 1 pound of slow cooked pulled pork
  • 1 pound of Southern buttermilk fried chicken, topped with slaw, lettuce, and tomato

All sandwiched between a 9-inch sesame bun. And of course, what burger meal would be complete without a bucket of sweet potato fries on the side? Mere mortals can share the burger between 4 diners. But if you want to be immortalised on their Wall of Fame, feel free to take on The Beast Burger Challenge and manage to finish it within the time limit, your meal will be free and you’ll get your name added to the Wall of Fame.

If you and your hungry friends are still hungry, The Beast hosts All You Can Eat Chicken Tuesdays, where you get to enjoy juicy Southern Fried Chicken as well as unlimited cornbread, sides, and dessert too!

4. T Bob’s Corner

Cr: tbobscorner.com

Our voracious meat lovers and Muslim friends will be pleased to know that T Bob’s Corner is the place to be for Western fare that is Halal-friendly. And T Bob doesn’t play around when it comes to their “Sharing” options: from a 1 kg platter of lamb cutlets to a 1 kg T-bone steak served with their famous bone marrow, you and your friends will definitely be satisfied if you’re feeling carnivorous. For the particularly ravenous, the star of T Bob’s Corner is a massive 1.4 kg bone-in Angus Tomahawk that supposedly feeds 4 individuals, but no one’s stopping you from trying to finish it by yourself.

Find it at 527 Bedok North Street 3, #01-514, Singapore 460527.

5. Little Diner

Empire Burger

Little Diner is a laid-back restaurant modelled after New York City’s Lower East Side, so expect generous American-style fare with urban-chic decor. And when we say American-style, we mean it in every possible way, right down to their portion sizes. For example, there’s nothing “little” about the enormous Empire Burger that stands at almost a head tall.

Little Diner’s Empire Burger ($55++) is a sandwich loaded with 3 beef patties, bacon, a good mix of swiss and cheddar cheese, caramelised onions, plenty of lettuce and tomatoes, pickles, and a fried egg, with a side of thick-cut fries and house salad. Whew, that was a mouthful. It’s good for a group of 3 to 4 people, but you can take up the Empire Burger Challenge. If you manage to finish the entire thing in 20 minutes, you’ll earn mad props and a free meal. If you can’t finish it within the time limit, you’ll have to pay for the burger. On the bright side, the good folks at Little Diner will throw in a free dessert. That is if you can still stomach dessert.

6. Peperoni Pizzeria

Cr: Tableforthree.wordpress.com

If you a-dough pizza as much as we do, how about ordering an XXL 21” pie from Peperoni Pizzeria? Enough to feed 4-6 people, it’s perfect for a small party or family get-together. Make sure you’ve got lots of space in your car though, because the pizza box is so huge that it doesn’t fit on a standard delivery man’s motorcycle, so you’ll have to pick it up yourself.

Choose from options like the tried and tested Classico flavours, or treat yourself to something more premium with the Speciale flavours. Can’t decide? Do the half-and-half or follow your stomach and order two serparate XXLs instead.

7. Roadhouse

Terminator Burger

Roadhouse is a casual diner that prides itself on serving all-American classics: milkshakes and customisable burgers. It’s also home to the 1 kg Terminator Burger Challenge that’s almost as intimidating as Arnold Schwarzenegger himself. The burger has 6 beef patties, grilled in a mighty Josper grill to seal in the juices and impart a nice, smoky sear. The stack also includes cheese, streaky bacon, jalapeños, and coleslaw, all between homemade sesame buns. Finish this tasty burger within 20 minutes – the sea of fries included – and it’s free. Plus, you’ll earn eternal glory on the Roadhouse Wall of Fame. Our recommendation: skip breakfast and wear stretchy pants.

Southeast Asian Cuisines You Haven’t Tried Yet

We’re too busy fighting over whether Singapore or Malaysia has the best nasi lemak or checking out the latest pho offerings to see what other yummy dishes our neighbours boast. Ready to expand your geopolitical consciousness a little bit? Here are some of the best spots for where you can get lesser known Southeast Asian delicacies.

1. Filipino: Iskina Cebu

Iskina Cebu
Cr: eatbook.sg

Sink your teeth into the crispiest and juiciest national dish at Iskina Cebu. Here the lechon is spit-roasted for five hours over a charcoal fire — as close as you can get to authentic without flying over. The marinade packs a punch and makes the wait worthwhile. If pork’s not your thing, then check out the inasal na manok, or roasted chicken. Iskina Cebu does not offer a huge menu, but what they do, they do well.

Find it at 73 Ayer Rajah Crescent, #01-27, Singapore 139957.
Click here for more information on Iskinda Cebu.

2. Burmese: Inle Myanmar

Inle Myanmar
Cr: misstamchiak.com

Make sure you go with friends to this basement joint, because you’ll want to try everything. We love the flavourful Mohinga, a fish-based noodle soup filled with what seems like a thousand other flavours — assam, onion, banana blossom, ginger — that come together to do one thing: get you hooked. Then there’s the Pickled Tea Leaf Salad, which gives you that added punch you need for the day with its crisp peanuts, toasted sesame seeds and fried garlic. Check out the rest of the chef’s recommendations, and don’t forget to leave room for dessert.

Find it at 111 North Bridge Road, #B1-07, Peninsula Plaza, Singapore 179098.
Click here for more information on Inle Myanmar.

3. Cambodian: 51 F&B Cambodia Steamboat & Mookata

51F&B
Cr: facebook.com

We still haven’t found a place that serves our favourite Cambodian dish, fish amok, just yet, but if you don’t have the time for a weekend trip, why not try this standalone stall in the east? Run by a Cambodian lady, 51 serves up Khmer food with a Singaporean spin. Try their Loc Lak Khmer — wok-fried beef paired with a zesty, cilantro dipping sauce — or their fried white-spotted rabbitfish for a healthy(ish) but hearty family meal.

Find it at 51 Guillemard Road, Singapore 399705.
Click here for more information on 51 F&B Cambodia Steamboat & Mookata.

4. Laotian: IndoChine Chijmes

IndoChine
Cr: indochine-group.com

While Singapore does not have many Laotian restaurants just yet, IndoChine can be counted on to bring some of the best dishes to our shores. Its founder, Michael Ma, does hail from the “Land of a Million Elephants” after all. At this gorgeous outlet in Chijmes, order the Ping Xinh Nam Tok, or marinated beef rump, which also comes with a wagyu option. And while this landlocked country may not have much seafood naturally, you can still savour the Beer Battered Sea Bass Fillet with a Laotian-inspired tomato salsa. Delish.

Find it at 30 Victoria Street, #01-21/22, Singapore 187996.
Click here for more information on IndoChine Chijmes.

5. All in one stop: Colony

Why do you have to choose which Southeast Asian dish you want to explore? Pick a top-notch buffet like the Ritz’ Colony, and you can go around Southeast Asia, and the rest of the world — if your stomach allows. With its seven kitchens and live cooking stations, you’ll indulge in Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, Malaysian and Western dishes — and other cuisines during special occasions.

Your Guide to Local Kuehs

An irreplaceable part of any Singaporean’s diet, kuehs are the ultimate crowd-pleaser. That’s mostly because there are so many, there’s got to be at least one you like. To all the kueh fans out there, here’s some good news: you can learn to make your favourite local kuehs at the Singapore Food Festival! Before signing up though, let’s take a crash course on some of the most popular local kuehs.

Malay/Nyonya Kuehs

Sweet and fragrant, Malay and Nyonya kuehs are one of Singapore’s most iconic foods. The three main ingredients are pandan leaf, glutinous rice, and coconut. You’ll be amazed at how many delicious treats can come out of just these few simple, local ingredients.

1. Pulut Inti

Pulut Inti
Cr: mollys.com.sg

The most striking feature of these traditional Malay kuehs is their shape. Glutinous rice topped with sweet dessicated coconut is wrapped in a banana leaf, giving the kueh its triangular shape, and steamed. If you’re looking at the more common Nyonya interpretation, you’ll see that the rice is a gorgeous shade of blue.

2. Kueh Dardar

Kueh Dadar
Cr: authenticworldfood.com

Kueh Dadar is essentially sweet, coconut-flavoured Pohpiah. These dainty rolls of delight have a fragrant gula melaka-infused coconut filling and a gorgeous green skin. The skins are dyed green using pandan leaves and cooked into paper-thin crepes, so that the pastry both looks and tastes too tempting to resist.

3. Kueh Salat

Kueh Salat

Cr: epicureasia.com

Sinfully indulgent and decadent, the kueh salat is satisfaction in a bite. A generous layer of melt-in-your-mouth kaya custard rests on glutinous rice steamed with more pandan and coconut milk. Bursting with the distinctive fragrance and mild sweetness of these two ingredients in every bite, the kueh salat is as delicious as it is eye-catching.

Teochew/Fujian Kuehs

As opposed to their petite and sweet counterparts, Chinese kuehs are usually savoury and rather filling. Because of this, they’ve become affordable and popular breakfast foods. Glutinous rice also plays a key role in these kuehs, but is cooked with ingredients like dried shrimp and mushrooms instead.

1. Tutu Kueh

Tutu KuehCr: straitstimes.com

An iconic snack everyone knows and loves, tutu kuehs are what nostalgia must taste like. Soft, cakey, and pillowy, a thin layer of steamed rice flour wraps around a filling of either ground peanuts or shredded coconut. The kuehs cook rapidly too, so you can watch in anticipation as they’re prepared on the spot.

2. Soon Kueh

Soon Kueh
Cr: youtube.com

At once delicate and hearty, the Soon Kueh is a tantalising blend of chewy, soft, and crunchy. Its soft and chewy texture comes from the unique skin, a translucent, thin layer made with rice and tapioca flour. A filling of radish and bamboo shoots contribute the crunchiness, while garlic and dried shrimp give the entire kueh a savoury fragrance.

3. Ang Ku Kueh

Ang Ku Kueh
Cr: epochtimes.today

Literally “Red Turtle Kueh”, this snack gets its name from its bright red skin, which looks like a turtle shell. With a sweet filling of ground peanuts and sugar, or a paste made from mung beans, and a sticky, tender skin that’s delightfully mochi-like, it’s no wonder the kueh has stolen the hearts of generations of Singaporeans.

4. Png Kueh

Png Kueh
Cr: youtube.com

Bright pink, shaped like a wonky triangle, and featuring an intricate pattern, a Png Kueh is truly a pretty sight. The sticky and chewy skin holds glutinous rice, cooked with aromatics like mushrooms, shallots, and dried shrimp to give the rice a complex mix of flavours. Here’s a fun fact: the Png Kueh is supposed to look like a peach, which explains its curious colour and shape. Traditionally, red or pink Png Kuehs are for the gods and white ones are for ancestors.

5. Chwee Kueh

Chwee Kueh
Cr: bearnakedfood.com

Unlike most other Teochew kuehs, Chwee Kueh isn’t made of a skin wrapped around some filling. This popular hawker breakfast features a firm, almost pudding-like steamed cake with pickled radishes on top. Simple yet delicious, the crunchy and salty radishes complement the plain, silky rice cake perfectly.

Can’t wait for the workshops? That’s not a problem – Chope a seat at true blue Singaporean restaurants to enjoy your favourite local kuehs, along with a delicious meal of Singaporean foods. Folklore offers Singapore’s history on a menu, with dishes from Indian to Eurasian and everything in between.

If you fancy Peranakan, head down to Violet Oon’s for a selection of authentic Peranakan dishes that taste like they came straight from a friendly family kitchen. Finally, StraitsKitchen has a buffet of local hawker foods for all us bottomless pits. And remember, use the code TASTYBLOG when you make a reservation to bag 2X the Chope-Dollars!

5. Samy’s Curry Restaurant

Samys Curry.jpg
Cr: sg.asia-city.com

Located in a colonial building, Samy’s Curry Restaurant has been serving its famous fish head curry for more than 50 years. The décor looks a little like a canteen that’s stuck in time, but the diners that constantly pack this restaurant aren’t there to fill their Instagram feed with pictures (even though we won’t fault you if you snap a few photos). They keep coming back because Samy’s offers hearty Indian food at an affordable price.

Once you’re seated, you’ll get a banana leaf and some utensils. However, we suggest going sans spoon for the full experience. Next comes a scoop of rice you have a choice of white or briyani and a serving of vegetables and dhal, before you receive whatever sides and mains you have ordered. We recommend the Fish Head Curry, the Mysore Mutton, and the intriguingly tasty Fish Cutlet (think of it as a fish begedil).

Find it at 25 Dempsey Road, Singapore 249670.

6. The Song of India

chefs tasting.jpg

The Song of India is a 1 MICHELIN Star restaurant that serves refined yet decadent Indian cuisine. Curry fans will appreciate the Lucknavi Lamb Shank or Nalli Gosht (lamb shanks that are slow cooked in yoghurt, spices and fresh coriander until they are fall-off-the-bone tender), as well as the velvety smooth Goan Fish Curry (which has been cooked with tamarind to impart a sweet, tart, yet sour flavour profile that greatly increases the complexity of the dish). If you’d like to try their luxurious take on Indian cuisine, they’ve got options like Lobster Moily (whole lobster pan seared in lemon and marinated with a delicate coconut milk based sauce) and Star Spiced Foie Gras (pan seared foie gras spiced with star anise masala).

To celebrate their 13th anniversary, the restaurant offering a gourmet buffet lunch ($36.90++ per person) from Mondays to Saturdays. Sounds like a good deal? It gets better: every 4th diner dines for free. Take the chance to drag your foodie buddies and check off another restaurant from Singapore’s MICHELIN Guide.

If you think that all curries are heavy and food coma-inducing, then Tandoor’s summery stews will be a huge eye-opener. They use fresh, sweet mangoes from the Mangalore region in India to make signature dishes like Mango Curry, a tangy, appetising dish. It goes extremely well with a serving of steamed Basmati rice, and is also a perfect accompaniment to heavier dishes like the Bhatti Ka Murgh (Tandoori Chicken) or succulent Fish Goan Curry. Their open kitchen is also a nice touch. Watch the fascinating display of their chefs’ culinary prowess, as they prepare your food in gigantic tandoor ovens.

Here’s some good news for the weekend: Tandoor currently offers an indulgent buffet that serves a wide selection of curries along with various naan bread for $52++ per person.

Yantra by Hemant Oberoi is not your typical North Indian restaurant. The flavours and aromas are very much Indian, but the presentation and preparation all come with an unconventional twist. Expect surprising, yet delectable culinary creations like the Chicken Tikka Fondue and the Lucknavi Gosht Lamb Biryani. Curry lovers should definitely try the Martabaan Ka Meat or Pickling Pot Lamb Curry, with some naan on the side. For the stronger of stomach, try the Goat Cheese and Onion Seed Naan. ZKEC Butter Chicken

Awarded the MICHELIN Bib Gourmand in 2017, Zaffron Kitchen is known for their extensive selection of curries, snacks, and marinated meats, all perfectly executed and served in hip and modern spaces.

Do what the regulars do: order the Butter Chicken with a side of naan. We particularly love the garlic naan, which has the perfect balance of savoury, crunchy, and chewy. If you still have space for more, The Fish Tikka (made with salmon for a more unique texture) and Mutton Rogan Josh aren’t to be missed either.

Fries Around the World

What’s in a name? Apparently, quite a lot, if you’re a fry. We call them French Fries, but they’re actually from Belgium. The British say “chips”, but what exactly is a chip, and is it any different from a fry? And also, what are the Canadians doing with those cheese curds? Find out how fries are done all over the world, and where you can treat yourself to these tasty snacks.

1. Fries – America

CHILLI CRAB FRIES

These are the ones you’re probably most familiar with. You know, the ones you order online whenever you feel midnight hunger pangs. Probably the most versatile form of fries (and food, for that matter), you can get them in all shapes and sizes – think waffle fries, crinkle-cut fries, curly fries… the list goes on. They also go great with pretty much every dip on Earth. It’s no surprise this dish is such a culinary chameleon, considering it’s won the hearts of so many around the world.

When we said they can go with every dip on the planet, we meant it. At Loof, your favourite American treat goes Singaporean with their Chilli Crab Cheese Fries. Spicy, crispy, and cheesy, it’s a wonderful upgrade to your run-of-the-mill hot potato.

Find it at 331 North Bridge Road, Odeon Towers, Singapore 188720.

2. Frites – Belgium/The Netherlands

Frites
Cr: eatbook.sg

The Frite turned the humble potato into an addictive worldwide phenomenon so you can be sure it’s ridiculously good. However, it isn’t enough to just chuck potatoes into hot oil. You need to meet certain conditions to achieve Frite status. First, the type of potato – only soft Belgian Bintjes potatoes will do. They’re thick-cut, about twice or three times as wide as their skinny American cousins. Most importantly, Frites have to be double fried, preferably in fat instead of oil. If you tick all these boxes, you get a true blue Frite, soft and light on the inside, but with the most satisfying crunch on the outside.

If you want a frite done right, then you’ve got to have it from Martin Zwerts. This famous restaurant chain is beloved all over Europe for their authentic traditional frites, and it’s just arrived in Singapore earlier this year.

Find it at 3 Lorong Liput, #B1-07, Holland Piazza, Singapore 277725.
Click here for more information on Martin Zwerts.

3. Chips – Britain

Fish & Chips
Cr: bites.com.sg

Ah, the mysterious side of Fish & Chips. Contrary to popular belief, there is a difference (besides spelling) between chips and fries, though it’s a rather small one. Chips can only ever be thick and chunky. If you call long, spindly fries or worse, curly fries “chips”, you might earn the wrath of Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay, and other chip-loving Brits. Also, they’re not only served with fried fish! The British love to smother their chips in sauces like gravy or curry to make it a tastier, heartier snack.

Grab the most authentic Fish & Chips in Singapore at Smith’s! We’re talking crispy batter, tender, moist fish, and of course, a generous serving of classic thick-cut chips tossed with vinegar and salt.

Find it at 271 Bukit Timah Road, #01-02 Balmoral Plaza, Singapore 259708.

4. Poutine – Canada

Poutine

Crisp fries covered in fresh cheese curds and drenched in homemade gravy. It may sound like a literal hot mess, but don’t knock it till you try it! Canadians all over the country adore this greasy, bracing dish, and it’s not hard to see why. The fries and gravy gradually melt the cheese curds, so the flavours of the ingredients slowly blend together more and more as you eat. Piping hot and substantial, it’s perfect for warming you up from the inside during cold winter nights. As a bonus, it’s also a national favourite for getting rid of post-party hangovers.

The Westin’s Cook & Brew is run by a Canadian chef, so of course there’ll be poutine. Affectionately called the Poutine “Eh”, it’s an absolute must-try, featuring fresh cheese curds, cider gravy, and pulled pork.

Find it at 12 Marina View, Level 33, The Westin Singapore, Asia Square Tower 2, Singapore 018961.

5. Patatas Bravas – Spain

Patatas Bravas
Cr: taste.com.au

What started as a cheap tapas to go with beers and drinks is now a ubiquitous bar snack much of Spain can’t go without. Potatoes cut into large, irregular chunks are pan-fried in oil until they get crispy and golden. Serve with mayonnaise and spicy Bravas sauce, made using garlic, paprika, tomatoes, and chilli, for a spicy, carby, and satisfying snack, just what you need for a night of drinking.

Itching for a Spanish fiesta? Visit Sabio Tapas Bar for a lively ambience, great drinks, and Spain’s quintessential bar snack, the Patatas Bravas.

6. Pommes Frites – France

Entrecôte Steak_2MB

Most of us see fries as a fast and casual snack, but not the French. As lovers of all things fancy, their fries are about as posh as a potato can get. The pomme frite is thin and double-fried, so you definitely won’t get soggy fries in France. Also, they’re eaten not with burgers in small cafes and bars, but appear as Steak Frites (steak and fries) and Moules Frites (steamed mussels and fries) in classy Parisian brasseries. The French don’t use oil either – they use duck fat, so the fries get that extra kick of flavour.

For some quality steak and fries, look no further than L’Entrecote The Steak & Fries Bistro. The meat is melt-in-your-mouth tender, the sauces are to die for, and the fries are done to crispy, golden perfection.

7. Pan-fried potatoes with onion – Russia

Russian Pan Fried Potatoes
Cr: petersfoodadventures.com

When in Russia, eat fries for breakfast. We’re serious – fries in Russia and the Slavic countries actually look less like junk food and more like a wholesome breakfast. Potatoes, cut into strips, are pan-fried with onions and garlic until they turn golden-brown. Then, you can add anything you want into them. Some common options include dill, eggs and mushrooms. The end result is filling and nutritious, definitely something we would give to kids.

Unfortunately, it seems Russian fries haven’t reached Singapore shores yet. If you really love the idea of fries for breakfast (who doesn’t?), you can try making your own!
