If you’re a fan of foods that are tongue-numbing, you’ll be happy to know that there are plenty of places to indulge your masochistic cravings. We took it upon ourselves to discover some the spiciest foods in Singapore and where to get them.

Spicy Kko Chicken_preview

1. Kko Kko Na Ra – Hot & Spicy Chicken

When it comes to fried chicken, you can’t get better than some good ol’ KFC. And no, we don’t mean the American food chain. This saucy spot in Tanjong Pagar offers a range of flavours – from Original for the faint-hearted to Hot and Spicy for the daredevils out there. If the flaming red colour of the dish isn’t enough to faze you, venture a bite and you’ll find yourself wanting to gulp down water by the gallons just seconds in. For the health nuts out there, fear not as the chicken won’t leave you with greasy fingers afterwards.

2. Lagnaa –  We Declare You King/Queen Curry

Indian cuisine is known for its punchy curries and stews, and if you’re craving a fiery tongue, there’s no better place than Bib Gourmand eatery Lagnaa. Long known for their ridiculously spicy curries, this place offers 10 levels of spice – starting at Level 1 for the faint-hearted to Level 10 for the brave souls among us. Eat a Level 3 spice dish without the aid of any of their yogurt-based drinks and you can earn yourself a spot on the string Chilli of fame. Prove yourself worthy of Level 10 spiciness by downing a Level 6 curry and living to tell the tale – sounds like a flaming hot deal to us!

3. Kontiki – Death Wings

With views of the Kallang River and casual American diner fare, this eatery looks pretty unassuming – but don’t be deceived, the Cocaine Wings at Kontiki are as spicy as they are addictive. Doused in barbecue sauce and fried to perfection, these wings come in three levels of hot sauce, depending on your preference. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can can #yolo it out with the Death Wings. Coated in ghost peppers, which are known to be one of the spiciest peppers in the world, this dish heralds death for your tastebuds – good news for spice fanatics!

4. LongQing – Ma La

Szechuan cuisine is known to be one of the spiciest cuisines in the orient. Famed for their liberal use of chilli and pepper, this cuisine is home to the Ma La hotpot. Made with numbing Szechuan pepper and lots of chilli, a whiff of this dish will have you reaching for the tissues. One of the spiciest Ma La hotpots in Singapore is located at LongQing, where MSG isn’t used to mask the spiciness of the soup base. The premium meat offerings such as Angus Beef and Pork Shoulder offer some respite from the heat, but if it’s a spicy soup you’re after, you might have just found it.

5. Southwest Tavern – Spaghetti From Hell

If you’ve got to sign an indemnity form to eat it, it’s got to be legit. This unassuming dish looks like an average bowl of spaghetti and tastes like one – for the first few bites at least. Dig deeper and you’ll be ambushed by a strings of sliced chilli and spicy sauce. The tavern has a “Spaghetti From Hell Challenge” which gets eaters to chow down the dish in less than 10 minutes without the aid of water or any other beverages. Think you’re brave enough? Give it a shot – beer towers and food vouchers are up for grabs!

6. Lower East Side Tacqueria – Level 5 Tacos

If you’re a fan of Mexican food, you’ll love Lower East Side Tacqueria’s menu. Spice lovers will enjoy their Spicy Taco challenge even more. Finish a taco of your choice with their searing Level 5 Hot Sauce drizzled on top, and it’s on the house. The staff say anything above Level 3 is dangerous, and unsurprisingly, the innocent-looking sauce packs a serious punch, comprising a mix of peppers and chilli. Every weekend, brave souls attempt this challenge, fuelled my tequila and horchata, but few succeed. Are you game enough to taco on the challenge?

7. Sunset Grill & Pub – Level 35 Wings

This American diner touts itself as the “Home of the Level 35 Buffalo Wings.” Tangy with a hint of sourness, the wings start at regular spice levels and go up to level 35 for spice lovers. Finish a plate of their wings and your meal is on the house – you can recruit up to two people to join in your suffering. Be warned, however, these wings have gained notoriety for being the “spiciest wings in Singapore” and are a force to be reckoned with. If scorching heat and “spice tears” are your thing, then this challenge is definitely for you.

Chic restaurant, bar, and coffee joint ’63Celsius’ opens at Paragon!

It’s always a delight to discover new eateries that serve quality food and pay attention to customer comfort. That’s exactly what 63Celsius encompasses. You might be familiar with 63Celsius’ first outlet at Asia Square, catering largely to the office crowd. Some notable mentions on their menu include the fresh and savoury Prawn & Oyster Pasta, and their refreshing concoction of the popular Chicken Rice. The new outlet at Paragon incorporates the same versatility, but with a whole new level of class.

dsc_1505-1-1024x512

63Celsius definitely has the elegance to fit right in at a sophisticated location like Paragon. With dim lighting and an intimate dining atmosphere, this is a sweet spot for date nights. 63Celsius stands out with its unique architecture and rustic yet modern design. Golden brown and bronze hues give warmth to the restaurant, making you feel comfortable and right at home. It’s also a great place to chill with a group of friends or coworkers over their diverse and nouveau range of wines and cocktails!

63P-Eggs-Benedict_preview

To start, we had a 63Benedict—63Celsius’ very own spin on the classic Eggs Benedict! Two eggs poached sous-vide, served with smoked ham and sourdough bread. The dish is also embellished with fresh tomatillo flakes and drizzled with Aioli sauce. We loved how the egg was so silky, runny, and ultra soft – with a yolk that comes oozing at the slightest touch, it’s absolutely tempting. Enjoyable as a starter, this egg, crispy bread, and tangy Aioli sauce combo kept us anticipating for the other dishes to come.

63P-Crab-&-Cheese-Omelette

The artistic-looking Crab and Cheese Omelette came next. Infused with Parmesan cheese and shredded crab claw meat, every bite of this creamy cheesy wonder is surprisingly delightful. We especially loved the fluffiness of the omelette, and the chewy chorizo chunks also made for an enticing contrast to the soft cheese omelette. While some places overdo it with the cheese, 63Celsius gets it just right from the get-go.

Crab meat

A dish that truly stood out was the Crab Meat Pasta. Tantalisingly light and stringy spaghetti was smothered in extra virgin olive oil, garlic, and chili, which gave the dish a very piquant taste. For those who can’t handle spicy food, there is a mild option available. We found the mild alternative to be the perfect level of heat with a pleasant burst of flavour that lingers.

DSC_0139

For those who love a little indulgence, the artisanal Our famous Lobster Pasta is a signature dish that’s perfect for two. The fresh San Marzano tomato sauce and garlic provided richness and zest to the supple spaghetti. Not forgetting the Half Lobster, which had a nice briny tang!

63P-Ribeye-Steak-&-Frites

Who doesn’t love a good ol’ steak? At 63Celsius, the Argentinian Ribeye Steak and Frites is a must try. Fair warning though–a bite out of the succulent beef slices and the crispy shoestring fries will get you HOOKED. For that extra oomph, spread the peppercorn butter and let it melt onto the steak slices before you savour a bite. Pro tip: use the promo code CE10CP and book through the Chope app or website to dine in the month of October and enjoy 2 Argentinian Ribeye Steak and Frites and a bottle of Beaujolais Fleurie at $88++ (U.P. $140++)!

Cortado.jpg

This one’s for all the coffee connoisseurs out there– 63Celsius also specialises in quality brews to give you that daily cuppa joe at their coffee joint, 63Espresso! A strong contender on the menu to watch is the Cortado, which means ‘to cut’ in Spanish. It’s a concoction of espresso with equal parts of milk that produces a strong yet sweet tasting cup of coffee that will keep you coming back for more!

There’s always room for dessert: indulge in a decadent Chalk Farm Hazelnut Chocolate Brownie with a scoop of handmade vanilla ice cream for an unassuming chocolatey treat that definitely won’t disappoint! The rich and moist brownie fudge, coupled with the smooth, creamy vanilla ice cream is purely paradise.

Treat yourself to a 63Coffee and Chalk Farm Cake set at just $7++!

63Celsius definitely ticks all the right boxes in our books for it’s classy ambience, enticing menu, and spectacular service. The next time you’re in town, be sure to make a pitstop at 63Celsius.

PizzaExpress: Brand New, and Fresh Out of the Oven!

The UK’s favourite Italian Pizzeria finally landed on our shores last July and if you’re wondering if it lives up to the hype, spoiler alert: it does.

PizzaExpress at Scotts Square serves up amazing Italian-style pizzas, using dough made in-store and the freshest ingredients they can get their hands on. The best part about this whole experience (aside from chowing down on delicious slices of freshly baked pizza)? Being able to see your food being prepared, of course! The workspace is in the restaurant itself, separated from the general public by a glass partition. Here’s a sneak peek of what you can expect when you try PizzaExpress for yourself.

First up is their brand new Parma e Rucola Pizza.

Gif 1 PE

The chef gives the freshly-made pizza dough a generous coating of flour and then proceeds to gently roll and stretch it out.

giphy

He then slathers on a scoop of passata (fresh, thick tomato purée) that’s unique to the PizzaExpress brand worldwide and spreads it evenly over the dough before topping it with fresh mozzarella. Then it goes right into the oven, where it’s heated to 371 degrees celsius to achieve that perfect balance of crispy and chewy!

giphy1

It’s carefully taken out when the bottom turns slightly crisp and golden brown, after which the chef immediately starts cutting it into slices. (Um, can I get a sample? My stomach starts growling at this point!)

giphy2

Fresh arugula is then tossed in garlic oil, and gently layered on top of the pizza.

giphy3

Generous amounts of delicious, dry-cured Parma Ham are then distributed evenly across the pizza along with MORE slices of fresh mozzarella, and there you have it:

PizzaExpress3.jpg

Fragrant, crispy pizza (that was larger than expected), topped with garlicky, peppery arugula and deliciously salty parma ham. There was enough parma ham for each slice so I didn’t have to go through the hassle of tearing a piece of ham in half, like I’d usually have to do at other pizzerias. (#firstworldpizzaproblems) A bite took me right back to wandering around Rome in the summer sun – a must-try for sure!

Next up is their brand spankin’ new Lobster & Crabmeat Ravioli!

giphy4

A mixture of pomodoro and mushroom sauce goes into a pot, along with a dash of cream.

giphy5

Premium lobster and crab meat is sauteed, then wrapped into a ravioli shaped egg pasta dough and cooked al-dente, before being put into the pot and given a quick stir.

giphy6

This is then carefully spooned onto a plate, along with the hearty, mouthwatering sauce and garnished with spring onions and topped with a basil leaf.

PizzaExpress2.jpg

This is the delicious end result: ravioli filled with lobster and crab meat swimming in a velvety mushroom and pomodoro sauce! The ravioli was stuffed with incredibly sweet lobster and crab meat, and the thick, creamy sauce was a perfect accompaniment to the seafood ravioli. Definitely a 10/10 in my book!

Beef Pasta from La Forketta in Dempsey, Singapore

La Forketta (Dempsey, Nassim)

Each forkful of pasta you take at La Forketta is the fruit of their chefs’ labours and it shows, judging by the popularity of the establishment. The pasta is made with love, cooked with care, and it’s all we can do not to slurp down the entire bowl immediately. And no it’s not just the pasta that gets the homemade treatment. Bread and salami are also made in-house.

Dishes We Love: Focaccia bread, Linguine al Frutti di Mare, and Affettati Misti

6. Open Farm Community

Open Farm Community is a stunning open-concept restaurant in Dempsey that, in collaboration with food garden specialists Edible Garden City, aims to help the community reconnect with nature through the food we eat, and the proof is in the pasta – one plate of this risotto and we had a low-key out of body experience with mother nature.

The majority of ingredients are locally sourced, and everything is always fresh of course, which makes for some of the most delicious house made pasta you can find.

Dishes We Love: Carnaroli Risotto with chorizo, cuttlefish, ebi, green peas, saffron threads & crispy serrano; Rigatoni with local mushrooms, smoked pancetta, stilton, balsamic reduction
