Bali’s top 30 for the holiday season!

Eng | Bahasa

It’s that time of the year again! Like they say, “A little bit of summer is what the whole year’s all about”, and this time, summer coincides with the Muslim religious holiday, Eid-al-Fitr. Since this is a festival that most of Indonesia celebrate, holiday-hotspot Bali will surely be buzzing with tourists from all over — expect some places to be packed like sardines! To prepare yourself, book the best restaurants beforehand so you won’t go home on an empty stomach. Here are some great places to celebrate the holiday season!

Ubud

Kemiri Restaurant (COMO Uma Ubud)

Welcome to the land of yoga and wellness. Take a stroll through Campuhan Ridge Walk, enjoy the lush scenery, and unplug for a bit. Afterwards, you can have an authentic Indonesian lunch at Hujan Locale, Kemiri, Nomad, or The Restaurant at the Chedi Club Tanah Gajah.

It’s time for some Bali-exploration! Be captivated by a kecak dance performance or visit the cheeky Ubud Monkey Forest for the ultimate Bali experience! After that, drop by the Habitat Cafe for a healthy and refreshing meal. But, if you feel like lazing the day away, sink into cool waters and watch the time fly by at Folk, or better yet! Enjoy stunning Ubud alongside Bali’s acclaimed sunset at Sayan House. Reservations are essential but fret not, we’ve got your back. Book your dinner at the best of Ubud — BLANCO par Mandif, Kubu at Mandapa, Pica, and bridges will be your best bets.

Seminyak

Mrs. Sippy Bali

Oh my, we seriously don’t know where to start. Seminyak is such a fun area to explore! Experience the largest saltwater pool at Mrs. Sippy, grab a quick bite at Bo & Bun, or put on your sunnies and sip on a cold rosé while enjoying a delightful meal at Ijen, whereby zero wastage is promoted to lower carbon footprint. Wander around Jl. Kayu Aya and pick your favourites from a treasure trove — from traditional handmade souvenirs to designer boutiques, you name it, this street has it. You won’t be lacking dinner options here in Seminyak with Mamasan, Sarong, Da Maria, and Barbacoa being definite favourites. When you’ve had your fill, dance the night away at La Favela, but don’t forget to snap some shots at the cute photobox on the second floor!

Canggu

From_the_Land_Tongseng_Kambing_1554128131
SVÁ Indonesian Tapas & Bar

If Seminyak and Ubud were to have a child, Canggu would be their baby. Start your day right by joining a barre class or relax through sunrise flow yoga at Fitspot Bali. Then, move on to indulge in great food at all-time favourite cafe Milk & Madu at Jl. Pantai Berawa, or enjoy a caffeine boost amidst ravishing rice fields at Cinta Cafe. Another must do is renting a motorbike and visiting the bustling local flea market around Batu Bolong area — like they say, reuse and recycle! Spend the rest of your afternoon lounging and watching the sunset from the beautiful La Brisa, surf at Echo Beach, or lay back and relax at the sophisticated COMO beach club. Spoil your taste buds with an exotic twist on traditional Indonesian flavour at SVÁ Indonesian Tapas & Bar. If Japanese is your thing, modern restaurants Musubi and Ji are some of the eateries we take delight in.

Kuta

When hunger strikes, pay a visit to our favourite Italian places — Il Tempio and Jamie’s Italian Bali are just around the corner. Waterbom Bali is a One-of-a-Kind experience you just have to try in the city, and we believe you deserve a medal for completing the thrilling 5GX Reverse Bungy without throwing up. Treat yourself to a delicious meal of juicy, tender dry-aged meat at Henry’s Grill and Bar, or stuff your face at Feast Restaurant, located in Bali Kuta Resort. We hope you brought your dancing shoes, because LXXY is a glamorous nightclub not to be missed.

ChopePerks: What can you do with 10,000 Chope-Dollars?

Ok, so you’re no newbie; you’re on your way to making Chope reservations like a pro, there’s a list of favourite restaurants you’ve dined at parked away in your brain, and your account is filling nicely with Chope-Dollars. Now what? It’s time to get spending, my friend. Multiply your Chope-Dollars, multiply your experiences with ChopePerks!

Let’s imagine you have 10,000 C$ – what could you do? (If you already passed that amount ages ago – teach us your ways, shifu.)

1. Fulfil your wanderlust

image.png

Cr: myotonic.org

At 1,000 KrisFlyer miles for every 1,200 C$ redeemed, this is seriously one of the best ways to get miles. Chope reservations are free, and with earnings starting at 100 Chope-Dollars per booking, swapping them out for miles will take no time at all. With 10,000 C$, you can redeem a whopping 8,000 Krisflyer miles, then use the remaining 400C$ to enjoy a 7% discount on Agoda hotel bookings. Pack your bags, you’re ready to go!

2. Dig in without wallet worries

unspecified.jpg

Using vouchers to pay for a meal can be totally fine. Of course, don’t pull them out at key events like the first date or a very important business meeting with higher-ups, but at other times? They could make an already unforgettable experience even better. Redeem 10,000 C$ for $300 worth of cash vouchers that you can use to offset the bill at restaurants. Italian to Japanese, fine dining to casual cafes, your C$ can be used to make your tummy – and friends – happy without hurting your wallet.

Still not sure where you’re going yet? Then you might find it more useful to redeem your C$ for discount codes that entitle you to future restaurant voucher purchases on shop.chope.co.

3. Shop til you drop

image.png

Cr: mandalaybay.com

Let’s start with a little something for the makeup junkies, whether that’s you or someone you know. How does $5 off your Sephora online purchase sound? We did the math: your 10,000 C$ can be exchanged for $400 worth of Sephora makeup products (note: each user can only redeem a $5 voucher per transaction on Sephora). We know — we’ve already put this to good use. If you don’t fancy makeup, however, there are other lifestyle options from HipVan and CapitaStar vouchers to satisfy the shopaholic in you.

Krisflyer and Agoda rewards are available across all cities on Chope. For those who are in Bangkok, Jakarta, Hong Kong, and Singapore, get up and moving because you can redeem your C$ for GuavaPass reward. Ready to shop till you drop? Shopee rewards are yours to keep if you’re in Bangkok, Jakarta, and Bali. To our Thai friends in Bangkok, Happy Fresh and Starbucks perks are waiting for you! Also, our Hong Kong friends can redeem 4,000 or 8,000 Reward-U points with C$!

C$_blog_SG

Here’s a tip: if you want to earn C$ faster, keep making reservations on Chope to hit the higher tiers. As you Chope your way up tiers with ChopePerks, the amount of C$ you earn will speed up as well.

Members and Bronze Members get 1X Chope-Dollars for every completed booking while Silver and Gold Members receive 1.25X and 1.5X Chope-Dollars respectively. Be the best of the best, a Platinum member, to boast 1.75X C$ for each booking.

The more C$ you have, the more rewards you can redeem! And after all that glorious eating, ChopePerks is here to give you the rewards you rightly deserve. Remember: only reservations made through www.chope.co and the Chope app are counted, so download the app today!

Prost! 8 Places To Celebrate Oktoberfest 2018

Held annually in Bavaria, Munich, Germany (phew! What a mouthful), Oktoberfest is a folk festival that is synonymous with great company, great beer, and great times! Can’t fly to Germany to celebrate this historic festival? Fret not as we’ve gathered 8 places in Singapore where you can taste authentic German beer and still bask in the spirit of Oktoberfest. And if you’re a beer geek looking for something a little more niche than German beers, be sure to check out these watering holes to get your craft beer fix.

1. Brotzeit

unspecified-1.jpeg

unspecified.jpeg

Practically an institution if you’re looking for all things German, Brotzeit celebrates Oktoberfest with live music and comedic acts like Oktoberfest Oompahband, as well as AnTon & the funny Guys (18 to 21 Oct at the Vivocity outlet). You can also taste all-time Oktoberfest favourites like tender pork collar slow roasted in dark beer sauce, served with soft potato dumplings and tangy sauerkraut; savoury meatloaf served between a soft Kaiser roll and potato salad; and who can forget? Succulent, oven-roasted pork belly that comes with crisp crackling skin, filled with moist bread stuffing. Wash it all down with a Hofbräu Oktoberfestbier (a full-bodied, bottom-fermented speciality beer)!

Book a table at these outlets:

2. Der Biergarten

image.png

image.png

Inspired by traditional beer gardens found in the Bavarian region, Der Biergarten is an unassuming space along Prinsep Street that is perfect for an intimate dinner or a round of drinks with friends. Come 16 October, gather a couple of mates (or girlfriends) and celebrate Oktoberfest with performances from AnTon & the funny Guys, a live band, and perhaps even a game of pool. There are also three Oktoberfest special platters ($68) to choose from: the Pork Knuckle Meat Lovers platter; a German Butcher Platter with Pork Jelly; or for those on a liquid diet – a 4 pint Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier set.

German beer aficionados will be pleased to note that traditional drafts like Paulaner Original Münchner Hell Premium Lager, as well as Paulaner Hefe-Weißbier Naturtrüb Wheat Beer,  are available at this fine establishment for $10 a pint.

Find it 48 Prinsep Street, #01-01, Singapore 188677book now

3. ERDINGER Oktoberfest 2018

image.png

Cr: misstamchiak.com

If you’re already planning a big night out at Clarke Quay, why not join in on the Oktoberfest festivities hosted by ERDINGER Weissbräu? From 19 to 20 October, the popular nightlife spot will be transformed into a German town where you can get lip-smacking German food as well as traditional Bavarian-brewed beer on tap.

The live band performances and carnival games are sure to get you on your feet as you participate in boisterous dancing on tables – as tradition dictates – and merrymaking. And if you’re really lucky, you might just walk away with awesome prizes during the grand lucky draw each night. There’s nothing like a good street party to get the Oktoberfest spirit going. Prost, mein freund (Cheers, my friend)!

Book a table at these partner bars:

Find it at Clarke Quay Fountain Square, Clarke Quay, Singapore 179024

Mark your calendars for 20 October as Fullerton Post Bar celebrates Oktoberfest with plenty of beers, beer maids, a live band and DJs, beer drinking competitions, and of course gourmet German fare like beef goulash, Bavarian sausage, and pork meatloaf. And what’s better than an ice cold ERDINGER Weißbier? How about the fact that they’re going for $10 all night!

Pro tip: get your tickets (each ticket includes one ERDINGER) early as they tend to sell out fast! Advance tickets are going for $15, regular at $20, while event day tickets cost $30. Come dressed in your finest dirndl (the traditional Bavarian dress for beer maids) and you may stand a chance to win prizes!

5. LeVel33

For an Oktoberfest that literally makes you feel like you’re on top of the world, LeVel33 is the place to go. Located on the 33rd floor of the Marina Bay Financial Centre, the world’s highest urban microbrewery is proud to offer their very own Festbier ($9.88 from opening till 8pm, $12.88 after 8pm) that was specially brewed for the month of October. The brew is best described as a clear straw colour with a frothy white head. The aroma is a buttery, creamy malt, with light caramel notes and is slightly fruity. The flavour is moderate bitter with a light hoppy palate. Light to medium bodied with soft carbonation.

TL;DR, goes best with a Brewery burger: puff malt brioche buns, thick wagyu beef patty, lettuce and cheese. Köstlich (delicious in German)!

The main event happens from 19 to 20 October where there will be a free flow of German beers like Benediktiner Hell, Bitburger, Paulaner Bräuhaus, and Weihenstephan for all valid passes (starts from $63) to go with German delicacies prepared by catering firm Shiso. The Rock Oompahs will also be performing live to celebrate this joyous festival.

If you pick up a VIP ticket ($154), you’ll get access to a sumptuous Oktoberfest Buffet which consists of Bavarian Chopped Green Salad with Walnut Vinaigrette, Roast Pork Knuckle & Crispy Pork Porchetta with Homemade Sauerkraut, German Apple Strudel with Cinnamon Sauce, and Gebratener Reis Deutsch (stir-fried long grain rice, green pepper, onion, pimentos, cider vinegar) just to name a few.

21 October will be a Family Day ($22, also comes with a free beer) complete with bouncy castles, game stalls, and other activities to keep the children entertained.

Paulaner Bräuhaus, Singapore’s first authentic German microbrewery, will be celebrating Oktoberfest from 10 to 21 October with various highlights. Expect freshly brewed Oktoberfest beers to accompany snacks like the original “Weißwurst” (a traditional Munich sausage made of minced veal and pork, flavoured with fresh parsley and lemon, served with an oven-baked pretzel). As well as specially curated Oktoberfest menus which feature generous platters of crispy pork knuckles, roast pork, and pretzels hanging from a “pretzel tree”. There’s even a family brunch buffet on 14 and 21st October, where your little ones can entertain themselves with activities like props making, glitter tattoos, pretzel bracelets, and alpine hat design.

5 Reasons You Should Go to Ubud This Month

The first quarter of the year is over – we think it’s about time to treat yourself to a little getaway. Give yourself a well-deserved break with an impromptu trip to one of the Zen-est places on earth: Ubud, Bali!

Here are 5 things you can look forward to in Ubud this month.

1. Amazing Food at the Ubud Food Festival

Ubud Food Festival
Cr: wanderingwok.com.au

Check out the most anticipated foodie event in Bali! The Ubud Food Festival, where culinary masters explore the best of Indonesia’s food, puts Indonesian cuisine in the spotlight. Over three days, chefs from all over Indonesia will gather to celebrate the country’s stunning produce, diverse cuisines, and fascinating culinary traditions.

This year, the Ubud Food Festival focuses on the theme of “Generasi Inovasi”, exploring future of Indonesian cuisine. A multitude of events is taking place from masterclasses, where experts impart a few tricks of the trade, to food tours, where you can see how food goes from farm to plate. The festival only takes place once a year, so make sure you take the chance to explore Indonesia’s rich culinary culture.

Chope also has a booth at the Ubud Food Festival, so come down and say hi! You can find out more about our Chope Exclusives deals, where we team up with some of Ubud’s best restaurants to bring you offers you won’t want to miss. Here’s a list of some of the participating restaurants:

2. White Water Rafting

Ayung River
Cr: ayungriverrafting.net

If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush and an exciting afternoon, look no further than the Ayung River. The Ayung is one of the most challenging rivers for whitewater rafting in Bali, filled with waves up to four feet high and narrow channels that will send the boat jostling. There’s plenty of splashing to go around too!

Apart from the thrilling ride, you’ll also get to see plenty of fascinating sights. As you paddle through the 10-kilometre stretch of river, you’ll pass by magical unspoiled rainforests, exquisite wildlife (if you’re lucky, you may see the Blue Javan Kingfisher), and enchanting rice fields. The river also contains several surprises, like hidden waterfalls and ancient stone carvings on its walls.

Hungry? Grab a bite at the gorgeous Kubu at Mandapa

Kubu at Mandapa

We’re sure you’ll be hungry at the end of your exciting ride. Lucky for you, we’ve got just the place to satisfy your growling tummy. Kubu at Mandapa serves up European and Mediterranean in a cosy setting inspired by the traditional huts used by Balinese farmers to store rice. It’s the perfect place to unwind and relax, tucked away snugly in the restaurant’s cocoon tables with a view of the Ayung gurgling just below your feet.

Ubud is the centre of culture and art in Bali, so it’s no surprise that the town is a great shopping destination. Let your inner shopaholic run free at Jalan Raya Ubud, which is lined with a multitude of boutique clothing shops, art galleries, and museums for your perusal.

Don’t forget to turn into one of its small side roads and explore the hidden treasures there as well. Monkey Forest Road is definitely worth a visit, and not just because it’s got some of the best clothing shops. It’s also the road which passes by the intriguing Ubud Monkey Forest, a sanctuary for grey macaques.

Fight the hunger at Hujan Locale

Hujan Locale

Another thing that makes Jalan Raya Ubud a great place to spend your afternoon is the amazing food. Here, you can find a variety of restaurants and cafes to fill your stomach, including Hujan Locale by Will Meyrick. This Scottish chef fell head over heels for the spices and flavours of Southeast Asian food and has since set up several stellar restaurants around the region celebrating this unique cuisine. At Hujan Locale, you’ll find authentic Balinese classics with a slight twist, served in a rustic restaurant that has a quaint yet sophisticated charm. Here’s a small tip: try to get a window seat on the upper floor, so you get great views of the streets below.

4. Enchanting rice paddy fields

Paddy Fields

There’s nothing as quintessentially Balinese as its rice paddy fields. Imagine rolling fields of supple green stalks rustling in the wind, stretching out as far as the eye can see. If you’re there close to the harvest, you’ll be treated to a golden sea of bowed ears of ripened rice. Take a day to cycle or walk along the fields, soaking in the beautiful vistas Bali has to offer.

Dine under the stars at The Restaurant at The Chedi Club

The Restaurant at the Chedi Club

Walking along paddy fields is an amazing experience, but eating in the middle of the paddy fields is equally fulfilling. At The Restaurant at The Chedi Club, you can view enchanting vistas of Tanah Gajah’s emerald paddies, set against the backdrop of Bali’s sacred mountains, while dining on gourmet Asian and Western cuisine. Don’t miss their authentic Balinese foods, complete with bumbu spices that are prepared fresh every day.

If you loved the food so much, you wish you could have it every day, go for the cooking class conducted by the restaurant’s very own “Mama Bali”. Ibu Ni Myoman Adriani dishes out pearls of culinary wisdom to classes of up to six guests, so you can have a taste of Bali in your own kitchen.

Take a cooking class

One of the best ways to truly immerse yourself in Balinese culture is to take an authentic cooking class. Learn about the ingredients that go into local cuisine and pick up some skills to whip up your own creations back home. Veteran chef Iboe Soelastri’s cooking class in Hotel Tugu is as close to authentic Balinese cooking as you can get. Starting with a tour of a traditional Balinese market, you get to learn about the ingredients used in Balinese cuisine, and try your hand at cooking up to five dishes on a woodfire stove – then enjoy them for lunch!

Tanah Lot by sunset

After cooking up a storm in the kitchen, take some time to relax and enjoy the sunset at Tanah Lot, a sea temple located less than 20 kilometres from Denpasar. The temple sits on a rock on the coast that has been continuously shaped by the tide, and is said to be the work of the founder of the Shaivite Priesthood in Bali, Dang Hyang Nirartha. While this temple is spectacular at any time of day, it is particularly beautiful in the fading light of the setting sun. Make sure you go with a tour guide, and hope for a clear day, which makes for beautiful photos.

Warung Disni is located less than ten minutes from Tanah Lot, and serves up authentic Balinese cuisine at wallet-friendly prices. Beloved by locals and tourists alike, this little gem is abuzz with activity no matter what time of day it is, and is actually reminiscent of a small hawker centre. Try their Indonesian Noodles, or Yellow Rice with various toppings. A meal here is the perfect way to round off your first day in Bali!

Spice by Chris Salans

If you’re looking for solid, unpretentious Indonesian food in a hip setting, Spice is the place to go. This gastro-bar, helmed by acclaimed chef Chris Salans, has three classy but comfortable locations spread across three destinations: Ubud, Sanur, and Seminyak. The menu is divvied up into sections like “Seafood”, “Raw”, and “Sliders”, and standouts include the indulgent Crispy Pork Belly given an update with turmeric dressing and dukkah spice or Tuna Tataki with sambal kecicang and tempe crackers. The cuisine here is infused with Western influences, so it’s no surprise that the affordable sliders (with ingredients like papaya, sambal hijau, and wakame bread) are absolutely scrumptious. Wash it all down with a milkshake or signature cocktail—Salans’ tipples only use fresh fruits and local spices. Pro-tip: give the Jackfruit Bourbon Cocktail a spin!

Grain

Grain’s affordable menu belies the effort put into it: from locally-sourced produce, pies baked in-house, to a unique blend of 100% Arabica beans. You can find classic Indo dishes here too, but the All Day Breakfast and Western dishes are where it’s at. Go for a Bali Benedict or the luxurious Breakfast Board, which offers an assortment of components like marinated feta and sourdough rosti for a steal. For something heartier, you can’t go wrong with a Pulled Pork Burger showcasing slow-roasted pork with homemade apple sauce. Pair it with a cup of coffee and while away a lazy afternoon in Seminyak. The art-adorned walls, matching cushions, and industrial vibe make for a beautifully Instagrammable interior, too.

Scratch is devoted to serving up rustic pasta and meaty mains that are easy on the wallet—most dishes are priced below IDR 120,000! Each plate is an explosion of flavours, and we love the Scratchatouille, a roasted crispy skin chicken on a ratatouille comprising ten vegetables and five herbs, garnished with gorgonzola and toasted almond olive oil. Other favourites are the Philly Cheese Steak Poutine and slow-cooked Baby Back Pork Ribs in two styles, whether you’re craving eastern or western flavours. Salivating yet? Healthy food never tasted so good. Located in a two-storey treehouse overlooking vast rice paddies at Batu Bolong, Canggu, a meal at Betelnut cafe is a treat for both the eyes and taste buds! There’s a whole range of healthy yet scrumptious food choices to choose from, such as towering burgers served with a side of fat chips, to HUGE (I’m not kidding here) bowls of fresh salads. We recommend opting for the Big Betelnut Salad, a bad**s that boasts a combination of four of their special salads – the best of both worlds, amirite?

Corner House

Located in a cozy, two-storey bungalow at the end of Jalan Kayu Aya in Seminyak, Corner House has the perfect environment to while away a lazy afternoon with delicious grub and quality brews. The menu at this all-day diner is quite comprehensive, featuring breakfast, lunch, dinner, and happy hour menus (plus a wide range of apéritifs).

Pssst, though the Corn Fritter Stack might not sound that appealing, it is to-die-for and it’s one dish we can’t stop raving about. Similar to vegetable fritters, these tasty delights are fried to perfection – crisp on the outside yet moist on the inside. The fritters are then layered with halloumi and stewed tomatoes before being topped with a perfectly poached egg. UH-may-zinggg.

Livingstone Cafe and Bakery

Situated on the ground floor of a 2-storey bungalow, Livingstone Cafe and Bakery exudes laid-back vibes. Come nightfall, fairy lights adorning the interior light up, providing the perfect backdrop for an intimate night with your date.

If you’re a sucker for cute food, then grab a loaf of Watermelon Toast from their bakery section. For adventurous eaters, they have many cool creations to try, such as fruit infusion coffees like Strawberry Coffee, Orange Coffee, Avocado Coffee or the Peanut Banana Coffee or their Taro Latte, which is thick and creamy, and boasts strong hints of taro.

Sisterfields

The long queues outside Sisterfields are testament to its popularity. Popular amongst the locals and tourists, Sisterfields whips up gorgeous, heartily portioned, Australian-inspired dishes.

Be sure to order an Acai Berry Bowl and their Polenta Fries with Truffle Aioli and Parmesan. The Polenta Fries have subtle truffle notes and are fried to golden-brown perfection; the grated parmesan adds a salty aftertaste, sealing the deal. They’re insanely delicious we would queue 30 minutes just for them.

Angelita Tea Salon & Patisserie

With an interior washed in sweet pastel hues and gold accents, along with floral-embellished cutlery, Angelita Patisserie’s concept is British-tea-room inspired. Here, you’ll find beautifully decorated eclairs in assorted flavours (the Salted Caramel Eclair is our fave!), viennoiserie displayed in brown wicker baskets, and other high tea offerings. If you’re feeling peckish, they have a modest, yet delectable hot food menu, offering dishes such as Stuffed Chicken and BBQ Pork Ribs with Born Sauce.
