Bali’s top 30 for the holiday season!

Eng | Bahasa

It’s that time of the year again! Like they say, “A little bit of summer is what the whole year’s all about”, and this time, summer coincides with the Muslim religious holiday, Eid-al-Fitr. Since this is a festival that most of Indonesia celebrate, holiday-hotspot Bali will surely be buzzing with tourists from all over — expect some places to be packed like sardines! To prepare yourself, book the best restaurants beforehand so you won’t go home on an empty stomach. Here are some great places to celebrate the holiday season!

Ubud

Kemiri Restaurant (COMO Uma Ubud)

Welcome to the land of yoga and wellness. Take a stroll through Campuhan Ridge Walk, enjoy the lush scenery, and unplug for a bit. Afterwards, you can have an authentic Indonesian lunch at Hujan Locale, Kemiri, Nomad, or The Restaurant at the Chedi Club Tanah Gajah.

It’s time for some Bali-exploration! Be captivated by a kecak dance performance or visit the cheeky Ubud Monkey Forest for the ultimate Bali experience! After that, drop by the Habitat Cafe for a healthy and refreshing meal. But, if you feel like lazing the day away, sink into cool waters and watch the time fly by at Folk, or better yet! Enjoy stunning Ubud alongside Bali’s acclaimed sunset at Sayan House. Reservations are essential but fret not, we’ve got your back. Book your dinner at the best of Ubud — BLANCO par Mandif, Kubu at Mandapa, Pica, and bridges will be your best bets.

Seminyak

Mrs. Sippy Bali

Oh my, we seriously don’t know where to start. Seminyak is such a fun area to explore! Experience the largest saltwater pool at Mrs. Sippy, grab a quick bite at Bo & Bun, or put on your sunnies and sip on a cold rosé while enjoying a delightful meal at Ijen, whereby zero wastage is promoted to lower carbon footprint. Wander around Jl. Kayu Aya and pick your favourites from a treasure trove — from traditional handmade souvenirs to designer boutiques, you name it, this street has it. You won’t be lacking dinner options here in Seminyak with Mamasan, Sarong, Da Maria, and Barbacoa being definite favourites. When you’ve had your fill, dance the night away at La Favela, but don’t forget to snap some shots at the cute photobox on the second floor!

Canggu

From_the_Land_Tongseng_Kambing_1554128131
SVÁ Indonesian Tapas & Bar

If Seminyak and Ubud were to have a child, Canggu would be their baby. Start your day right by joining a barre class or relax through sunrise flow yoga at Fitspot Bali. Then, move on to indulge in great food at all-time favourite cafe Milk & Madu at Jl. Pantai Berawa, or enjoy a caffeine boost amidst ravishing rice fields at Cinta Cafe. Another must do is renting a motorbike and visiting the bustling local flea market around Batu Bolong area — like they say, reuse and recycle! Spend the rest of your afternoon lounging and watching the sunset from the beautiful La Brisa, surf at Echo Beach, or lay back and relax at the sophisticated COMO beach club. Spoil your taste buds with an exotic twist on traditional Indonesian flavour at SVÁ Indonesian Tapas & Bar. If Japanese is your thing, modern restaurants Musubi and Ji are some of the eateries we take delight in.

Kuta

Treat yourself to a delicious meal of juicy, tender dry-aged meat at Henry’s Grill and Bar, or stuff your face at Feast Restaurant, located in Bali Kuta Resort. We hope you brought your dancing shoes, because LXXY is a glamorous nightclub not to be missed.

Top 10 Pocket-friendly Restaurants in Bali

Bali’s well-known for its stunning beaches and exotic cuisine, Indo dishes, and believe it or not, there are countless places to splurge on a hearty feast without shelling out a small fortune. We’ve taken the liberty of compiling a quick guide to 10 restaurants, so you can eat your way across this beach paradise on a budget. It includes a variety of cuisines, from authentic Indonesian to Western fusion—whatever your pick, we guarantee both your appetite and your wallet will leave satisfied.

cs1.jpgcs2.jpg

Spice by Chris Salans

If you’re looking for solid, unpretentious Indonesian food in a hip setting, Spice is the place to go. This gastro-bar, helmed by acclaimed chef Chris Salans, has three classy but comfortable locations spread across three destinations: Ubud, Sanur, and Seminyak. The menu is divvied up into sections like “Seafood”, “Raw”, and “Sliders”, and standouts include the indulgent Crispy Pork Belly given an update with turmeric dressing and dukkah spice or Tuna Tataki with sambal kecicang and tempe crackers. The cuisine here is infused with Western influences, so it’s no surprise that the affordable sliders (with ingredients like papaya, sambal hijau, and wakame bread) are absolutely scrumptious. Wash it all down with a milkshake or signature cocktail—Salans’ tipples only use fresh fruits and local spices. Pro-tip: give the Jackfruit Bourbon Cocktail a spin!

Find it at Jalan Raya Ubud No. 23, Ubud, Bali 80571; Jalan Danau Tamblingan No. 140, Sanur, Bali 80228; or Jalan Batu Belig No.7, Kerobokan, Seminyak, Bali 80361

grain 1.jpggrain 2.jpg

Grain

Grain’s affordable menu belies the effort put into it: from locally-sourced produce, pies baked in-house, to a unique blend of 100% Arabica beans. You can find classic Indo dishes here too, but the All Day Breakfast and Western dishes are where it’s at. Go for a Bali Benedict or the luxurious Breakfast Board, which offers an assortment of components like marinated feta and sourdough rosti for a steal. For something heartier, you can’t go wrong with a Pulled Pork Burger showcasing slow-roasted pork with homemade apple sauce. Pair it with a cup of coffee and while away a lazy afternoon in Seminyak. The art-adorned walls, matching cushions, and industrial vibe make for a beautifully Instagrammable interior, too.

scratch 1.jpgscratch 2.jpg

Scratch

When an entire section of a restaurant’s menu is dedicated to comfort food, you know they’re serious about it. This casual eatery, with its homely interior and downright good food, is hidden away near Oberoi and Kerobokan streets. Scratch is devoted to serving up rustic pasta and meaty mains that are easy on the wallet—most dishes are priced below IDR 120,000! Each plate is an explosion of flavours, and we love the Scratchatouille, a roasted crispy skin chicken on a ratatouille comprising ten vegetables and five herbs, garnished with gorgonzola and toasted almond olive oil. Other favourites are the Philly Cheese Steak Poutine and slow-cooked Baby Back Pork Ribs in two styles, whether you’re craving eastern or western flavours. Salivating yet? There’s even an outdoor patio, so gather your friends and toast to their happy hour specials.

Zibiru

Impress your date with a romantic evening that won’t break the bank. In Zibiru’s charming garden setting, treat yourself to well-executed Italian specials as you retreat from the buzz of Seminyak. Their pasta dishes truly shine, and no wonder, since it’s all freshly handmade in their kitchen daily. Try the Ravioli di Carne Al Midollo, with a luxuriant bone marrow sauce and refreshing citrusy garnish, or the Gnocchi di Zucca con Cime di Rapa, pumpkin gnocchi served with sautéed kale, anchovies, and ricotta. If you’re feeling peckish before dinner, get an early seating and sample all of the chef’s picks. Diners get a free degustation with every glass of wine or cocktail purchased between 4-6pm, so that’s more bang for your buck!

Nostimo

Craving a taste of the Mediterranean? Pop by Nostimo, a Greek grill in Seminyak. It’s only been open slightly over a year but Nostimo’s already established itself as the destination for delicacies from the Grecian coast. You can opt to dine alfresco, or in the blue-and-white themed interior, styled to look like an airy pavilion. Come with a group, and mix-and-match from a staggering selection of mezze platters, gyros and souvlaki. The star of the show is the tender, toothsome soutzoukaki, a type of spiced kebab—wrap it inside a thick fluffy pita with a crisp salad on the side, and find your little piece of Grecian heaven in Bali!

For some light Indian cuisine, get yourself over to Tiffin in Seminyak. The restaurant’s reinventing the wheel of heavy Indian dishes with their specialty tapas and small plates—all the better for sampling a greater variety of their mouthwatering cooking. Some must-tries are the moreish Kheema Samosas, appetizing chaat and heavily spiced Prawns Tadka—the plates may be small, but they’re big on flavour! They’re also open for an Indian-inspired breakfast/brunch so you can fulfill your spice craving first thing in the morning.

The lounge serves up cake specials paired with an exotic selection of teas (over 50 varieties!) and alcoholic tipples. Besides breakfast, lunch, and dinner, we recommend their delightful high tea menu, split into either Traditional Afternoon Tea or Asian High Tea for Two—the latter runs the gamut of Asian cuisine, from Ayam Sisit with Sambal Matah Tart to Middle Eastern Orange Cake with rose tea syrup, all at the pocket-friendly price of IDR 250,000 for two. Enjoy sipping your tea off fine-bone china as you bask in the 150-year-old history of the Javanese joglo around you!

Free-Flow Brunch at Only $58++? Get Yours at Salted & Hung!

Mention the word ‘brunch’ and it’s likely you’re already thinking about the aroma of coffee, fulfilling breakfast platters, and the ambience of a cafe on a Sunday afternoon. But we’ll let you in on a little secret: what if brunch can be so much more than that?

Taking the usual brunch experience up a notch is Salted & Hung‘s Weekend Brunch Hangout, where diners get to tuck into free-flow (yes, we said FREE-FLOW) brunch items on Saturdays and Sundays. With a menu that boasts over 12 showstopping dishes, as well as a charcuterie and antipasti bar, this has to be one of the best kept secrets in town! Let us give you the rundown of some of our favourite dishes on the menu (click here for the full menu).

image1.gif

SH Portobello & Egg On Toast

Simple in name but not in flavour, Salted & Hung’s Portobello & Egg on Toast is something of a revelation. The robust sourdough bread carries a deep and slightly tangy taste which perfectly complements the meaty portobello and caramelised onions that it comes topped with. That torched cheese? YUM.

image3.gif

[NSFW] EGG PORN WARNING: Cut through the gleaming egg and let the golden yolk add another dimension of flavour to this already tasty snack!

SH Smoked Halibut & Caviar Crostini (1)

image4.gif

Another firm Chope team favourite is their Smoked Halibut and Caviar Crostini. The crostini bears the signature char from the Salted & Hung team’s skillful grilling. With each bite, the moreish mix of smoked halibut and savoury caviar create nuances of textures and flavours.

Freemantle Octopus, Lentils, Caponata

Wagyu Ragu, Homemade Pasta, Beef Fat Crumbs

Small plates aside, don’t forget to give some of their meatier options a try. With tantalising items such as Fremantle Octopus chargrilled to perfection, juicy Chicken Thigh, and satisfying Wagyu Ragu, resistance is futile.

image2.gif

SH Steak, Eggs & Tomatoes

While Salted & Hung likes to keep things simple, the flavours of the dishes that fly out the kitchen are never compromised. A fine example comes in the form of their Steak, Eggs, & Tomatoes: a delicate slab of Angus beef short rib is sous vide at a low temperature for 48 hours, and then lightly smoked with applewood and mesquite before hitting the grill. With so much care put into preparing the short rib, it doesn’t come as a surprise that each bite packs a complex punch. Served on the side are dainty, charred, pickled green tomatoes which were a welcoming cleanser in between mouthfuls of steak.

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

With irresistible selections such as the Peanut Butter Cornetto and French Toast Doughnuts, we won’t hold it against you if you decide to go nuts on the desserts front. Their Hibiscus, Berries & Px took us by surprise with its fresh, tart, yet sweet combination.

For an afternoon of free-flow delights to knock your socks off, the whole shebang costs only $58++ per person. Plus, top up an additional $30++ for unlimited beer, prosecco, and house pour wines for two hours! The best part? Each Sunday from now until 3rd September 2017, score a brunch seat at only $50++ per person when you book a table through either the Chope app or website with the promo code 50SALTED!

Healthy food never tasted so good. Located in a two-storey treehouse overlooking vast rice paddies at Batu Bolong, Canggu, a meal at Betelnut cafe is a treat for both the eyes and taste buds! There’s a whole range of healthy yet scrumptious food choices to choose from, such as towering burgers served with a side of fat chips, to HUGE (I’m not kidding here) bowls of fresh salads. We recommend opting for the Big Betelnut Salad, a bad**s that boasts a combination of four of their special salads – the best of both worlds, amirite?

Corner House

Located in a cozy, two-storey bungalow at the end of Jalan Kayu Aya in Seminyak, Corner House has the perfect environment to while away a lazy afternoon with delicious grub and quality brews. The menu at this all-day diner is quite comprehensive, featuring breakfast, lunch, dinner, and happy hour menus (plus a wide range of apéritifs).

Pssst, though the Corn Fritter Stack might not sound that appealing, it is to-die-for and it’s one dish we can’t stop raving about. Similar to vegetable fritters, these tasty delights are fried to perfection – crisp on the outside yet moist on the inside. The fritters are then layered with halloumi and stewed tomatoes before being topped with a perfectly poached egg. UH-may-zinggg.

Sisterfields

The long queues outside Sisterfields are testament to its popularity. Popular amongst the locals and tourists, Sisterfields whips up gorgeous, heartily portioned, Australian-inspired dishes.

Be sure to order an Acai Berry Bowl and their Polenta Fries with Truffle Aioli and Parmesan. The Polenta Fries have subtle truffle notes and are fried to golden-brown perfection; the grated parmesan adds a salty aftertaste, sealing the deal. They’re insanely delicious we would queue 30 minutes just for them.

Here, you’ll find beautifully decorated eclairs in assorted flavours (the Salted Caramel Eclair is our fave!), viennoiserie displayed in brown wicker baskets, and other high tea offerings. If you’re feeling peckish, they have a modest, yet delectable hot food menu, offering dishes such as Stuffed Chicken and BBQ Pork Ribs with Born Sauce.

Your gaze drifts over the four uniquely themed dining spaces. You have the requisite Japanese selections of sashimi, sushi, and teppanyaki – they may not grab your attention immediately like the three dessert bars (we can’t get over this), but they are highly underrated. At the Rotisserie section (yep, that’s where that amazing smell is coming from), you’ll find a Chicken Kebab (Shovaslaki) live station where meat is carved straight from the roasting spit onto a pita bread or tortilla, packed with fresh greens, and then drizzled with creamy mayonnaise before serving. There’s also a Nasi Lemak station with a large variety of sides and mains to accompany the fragrant coconut rice, such as Baked Chicken with a Sambal Peanut Sauce and Sambal Prawns with Beancurd and Quail Eggs.

If that wasn’t enough, there’s also a live Popiah station, Waffle station, Deli corner, Seafood on Ice, and so much more, you’ll be spoilt for choice!

TEA-se Me with the Ultimate Springtime Indulgence: Hong Kong’s Best Afternoon Teas

Ladies, did you know that the origins of afternoon tea harkens back to Anna Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford? Back in those days, the Duchess was only served two meals each day—once in the morning for breakfast, and once in the evening for dinner. Overcome by never-ending hunger pangs, Anna decided to schedule a time each afternoon for a quick repast. Thus the afternoon tea was born, which rose to popularity first in London’s top hotels and was gradually embraced by Britain’s outposts worldwide.

Now you can enjoy this popular British pastime at an eclectic array of Hong Kong’s restaurants, from the posh digs of Clipper Lounge to the Nordic-inspired afternoon tea at FINDS. Pinkies at the ready? Let’s go!

Urban Park’s Butterfly Blossom Afternoon Tea hands-down wins the prize for the afternoon tea with the best presentation. Priced at just HKD $239 per head, Urban Park’s set features sweet and savouries (think creamy Butterfly Cakes with Lemon Buttercream and Petite Prawn Cocktails). Presented in an adorable silver two-tiered birdcage garnishes with fresh flowers—nice touch eh?—Urban Park’s Butterfly Blossom Afternoon Tea Set is a sure flyaway winner. That British pomp and ceremony (tsk tsk The Peninsula), just isn’t present at Urban Park, but it’s still a glam spot where staff are polished and no ask is too tall. You know what’s the best thing? The Lounge & Bar: Best for Views

Savoury items—Ham & Cheese Brioche, Cheese Tart—are a combination of rich and intense flavours. Be sure to smother that jam on literally every morsel, ‘cause it’s that good. Trust us. Post-indulgence, imbibe from their extensive tea menu, offering the highest quality of teas. Above & Beyond: Asian Afternoon Tea

There’s more to the eye at Above & Beyond. Sure, the breathtaking views of Victoria Harbour 28 stories up are truly postcard-worthy. But what sets them ‘above & beyond’  amongst the inundation of afternoon tea choices in HK, has to be—cue the drumroll—dim sum. Yup! Sweet and savoury Cantonese plates are all present here: Sweetened Almond Cream with Lotus Seeds and Lily Bulbs, Pork Dumpling with Halibut and Black Mushroom, and Mushroom Dumpling with Pumpkin. Yum. So what’s better than dim sum? Desserts of course. Above & Beyond’s dessert selections are a bit of French-Asian fusion. Savour the Chilled Jelly with Lychee and Osmanthus (the lychee flavours are deliciously concentrated) as well as the Chestnut Crème Brûlée: a perfect dénouement, with its crunchy and custardy flavours melded to a buttery puff pastry base. Soar to new heights beyond our day-to-day afternoon tea haunts.

Sun-Soaked Sentosa’s Best Beach Bars, Cafes and Restaurants

Singapore doesn’t have many beaches for you to lounge around on despite being a sunny tropical island. However, if you’re determined to soak up the sun and waves without hopping on a plane, here’s a quick rundown of Singapore’s best beaches – plus the best restaurants and cafes to chill out in!

Tanjong-Beach-Club_Deck-chairs_web

Tanjong Beach

Tanjong beach is the ultimate dog lovers’ paradise – it’s the place people usually take their dogs for a swim and a stroll (except the adorable pups are usually too excited to just stroll at a leisurely pace), so be prepared to have the time of your life! Bring your fur children along and grab a snack along with a cocktail at Tanjong Beach Club while soaking up some sun rays on lounge beds on soft white sand. Sit back and relax with some Cider Battered Fish & Chips ($28) with a side of fragrant Truffle Fries ($10), and a cold  Piña Colada ($23) in hand and feel all the stress and tension of the outside world melt away. Remember to slap on some sunscreen!

Palawan Beach

Palawan is Singapore’s child friendly beach, full of activities to keep children occupied for an entire day (or until they exhaust themselves from playing and swimming). Stroll across the suspension bridge to the little Palawan Island (which is also where Asia is closest to the Equator!), and on the other side you’ll be rewarded with a viewing platform that gives you a bird’s eye view of Sentosa. Grab a seat at FOC Sentosa for delish Spanish fare – there’s even a pool by the bar! Imagine goggling at a breathtaking pink and purple-hued sunset while sipping on a glass of FOC Red Sangria ($16) and digging into a Squid Ink Paella ($40 for 2) – talk about perfection!

Siloso Beach

Siloso Beach is truly where the action’s at – this is definitely the place for you if you’re someone who likes to party, or if you’re the type of person who’s constantly on the move! You can surf a man-made wave at Wave House and chow down on their 1-Foot Garlic Baguette ($5.50) or the all time favourite ‘Wipe Out’ Pizza (topped with beef pepperoni, smoked chicken, chicken bratwurst, mushrooms, capsicum, pineapple and olives – $17.80) if you’re feeling peckish, or head over to Bikini Bar for a ice cold glass of Bintang beer!

If you’d prefer to just chill out, there’s something here for you too: Coastes offers a casual, laid-back beachy vibe where the sunbeds and deck chairs are placed right to the water’s edge. So sit back and relax with a good book, and dig into their delish Big Bad Wolf Pizza (bacon, roast chicken, capsicun, mushrooms – $25) or the flaky beer-battered Coastes Fish Burger ($20). You can also sprawl out at one of Ola Beach Club’s many sundeck chairs for some Hawaiian goodies – like their Kalua Pig Taco ($25) and Lomi Lomi Salmon ($16). Craving some Indian food? Kurry Korner’s got you covered with their hearty Chicken Tikka Masala & Butter Chicken ($17.60 each) that you can wash down with a refreshing glass of Mango Lassi ($6.60).

Sabio-By-The-Sea-Interior-2

Quayside Isle @ Sentosa Cove

Drive a little further down to the luxurious Sentosa Coast Marina for a breezy row of restaurants and cafes reminiscent of Croatia’s Splitska Riva (only my favourite place in the entire universe) where you can settle down with a tall iced latte and almost teleport from the hustle and bustle of Singapore’s dizzying city lights to the jewel toned Adriatic seafront in a matter of seconds.

Visit Sabio By The Sea for great tapas – the El Pulpo (grilled octopus leg, $24) and Vieiras en Salsa de Cava (sea scallops with white wine sauce, $22) are seriously top notch; or Miska Cafe for yummy Falafel ($19) or Shakshouka ($20) – you can’t go wrong with Mediterranean fare! There’s also Greenwood Fish Market if you’re feelin’ seafood – the Cold Seafood Platter ($99) consists of a steamed ½ Boston lobster, marinated Yellowfin tuna, freshly shucked oysters, New Zealand green lip mussels, littleneck clams, tiger prawns, and in-house apple wood cold smoked salmon, and is great for sharing!

Fancy some chewy New York style breakfast bagels? Get The Central Park sandwich ($14) stuffed with spring onion cream cheese, lox, and a smattering of capers from Schmearperfect anytime of the day. If pizza’s your thing, BIG FAT MAMA’s One Metre Pizzas are bound to satisfy!

There’s truly something for everyone here – so fret not if you can’t jet off for a beach holiday anytime soon; just head down to Sentosa and let the golden sun and salty air whisk you away to paradise.

#takeyourmumout this Mother’s Day!

How many times have we flopped down on the couch after a long day at work or school, whining about how tired we are, while waiting for our mums to whip up dinner? Now imagine having to prepare a meal for an entire family after a day of working your butt off… And I don’t know about you, but that sounds like straight up torture to me.

Chope is paying homage to all the incredible, sacrificial mums out there this Mother’s Day by getting three participants to put together something nice for their mum – and what better way to do so than with her guidance?

Here are the three adorable duos that joined us at CulinaryOn:

giphy

Kelly is a busy mum-slash-businesswoman – she’s the person in charge of Mellben Seafood (impressive, right?) Rachel…Well, she doesn’t cook at all. This is her first ever attempt, apart from the Home Economics classes she had to take in Secondary School, and it didn’t go as badly as anticipated (despite the slightly burnt garlic). Mum was proud either way – her daughter has skill!

giphy2

Agnes is sassy and adorable, and says that her fitness-trainer son Moses cooks up a mean Oxtail Stew that turned her into a beef lover. It’s his very first time cooking beehoon, and he nailed it (7.5/10 despite it being slightly dry, says mummy) – not too shabby! She’s now looking forward to enjoying more of Moses’ cooking so she can finally sit back and relax.

giphy1

Cindy is one of CulinaryOn’s fantastic sous chefs, and Brandon is the sweet boy who stole all our hearts. They both baked a fantastic dark chocolate cake doused in chocolate sauce, mini marshmallows, and sprinkles (with plans to eat it with vanilla ice cream afterwards, YUM), and this was Brandon’s very first time baking! Talk about pure talent – the gift of cooking certainly runs in the family.

Interior 01Interior 07

The entire video was shot at CulinaryOn, a spacious culinary entertainment studio originating in Europe that promises a fun and exciting cooking experience – the perfect place for a birthday party for a bunch of foodies or a relaxed girls day out!

Classes are headed by professional Chefs that bring cooking to life with stories and entertaining activities, so you leave with more than just a myriad of new recipes and techniques in your repertoire; you’ll have fun-filled memories you won’t forget.

Remember to bring mummy dearest along for a memorable culinary experience!

7 Best Brunches in Hong Kong

Dear Bruncher,

Tired of long lines, watered-down mimosas, and lukewarm sausages? Don’t despair! More than just a place to grab a quick bite, the following social spots are ideal brunch-a-licious places to imbibe a pick-me-up, devour the latest nosh from Spain, Italy, or Japan, and get the deets from last night’s (ahem!) sojourn.

Seasons - Green House 2

Seasons by Olivier Elzer

Seasons has become a veritable pied-à-terre for famished Frenchies in need of a Sunday crunch & brunch. While most restaurants hawk more American-style brunch staples, Seasons serves hungry guests a gastronomic challenge: should you go for the jet-fresh seafood (juicy French lobs, succulent prawns, and oysters) or the vast array of charcuterie and cheeses from Les Frères Marchand? Of course, you could opt for both…No judgement here! The food options at Seasons are plentiful, and diners will be pleasantly surprised by bite-sized desserts, egglettes, and free-flow champers on hand. To sum it all up: head to Seasons…’cause what they’re serving is always in season.

Find it at Shop 308-311, 3/F, Lee Garden Two, 28 Yun Ping Rd., Causeway Bay

La Paloma

Neon Red. White. Blue. No, we’re not talking about America but rather the chroma of La Paloma. Meaning ‘pigeon’ in Spanish and nestled in off the beaten path Sai Ying Pun, this über-fun outpost is the perfect nest to grab some grub with a pal or enjoy a breezy, casual meal with the fam. Perch on a stool amidst the pigeon-esque prints scattered throughout, and peck on small plates ranging from Tuna Tartar to Fried Squid. Looking for something more filling? Their bottomless Paella Mixta earns some serious brownie (and #brunchie) points.

TokyoLima

TokyoLima has elements that are both distinctly Nikkei and Peruvian – but that’s not what we’re all here for. Run by Peruvian Chef Arturo Melendez, TokyoLima peddles an impressive menu of raw, marinated, and seared plates to tuck into (and don’t miss out on the unforgettable sake!) The service is a bit on the rushed side, but their Omacasa Brunch featuring Nippon starter sides (こんにちは ‘Ki-mo-chi’ Fried Chicken and Lomo Saltado ‘El Taco’) are worth wolfing down. For an additional cost, imbibe some free-flowing Nagano, created by Isabella Vannoni, the resident mixologist extraordinaire. Sure, you’ll get your basic Nippon nibs here–but it’s the Peruvian twist that makes every dish here a winner.

Perched seven soaring stories high, Porterhouse presents plenty of amazing and awe-inspiring views of the Island and more. Halal Places for Every Palate

Halal restaurants can be difficult to find even in a multicultural country like Singapore, especially when you’re looking for more than just the traditional Indonesian or Malaysian fare. Fret not, here’s a list of the best (and our favourite) places to get halal food in Singapore, no matter what cuisine you’re looking for!

Japanese

Who doesn’t like Japanese food? It’s the top searched-for cuisine on Chope, and for good reason: nothing is as satisfying as slurping down a hot bowl of ramen on a rainy day, or digging into fresh sashimi atop a bed of tasty sushi rice. Here’s where you can get your fix!

The Ramen Stall serves up delicious ramen in a hearty chicken-based broth instead of the traditional pork-based variety, but this doesn’t make it any less tasty! Their Volcano Ramen’s a hot favourite, consisting of chicken cha-shu, corn, braised onsen egg, seaweed, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, and a mix of red chilli and dried Indian chili padi. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart (or stomach)!

Hei Sushi is Singapore’s first ever halal sushi-belt restaurant, and offers a plethora of sushi and sashimi dishes at affordable prices, but if you feel like kicking things up a notch, head over to Santaro by Gion for amazing omakase! Omakase is a Japanese phrase that loosely translates to ‘I’ll leave it up to you’; essentially entrusting the chef to come up with an assortment of sushi, sashimi, and various other delights as opposed to ordering it à la carte. Upscale halal Japanese restaurants are few and far between, but Santaro by Gion is bound to satisfy all your cravings!
