Bali’s top 30 for the holiday season!

Eng | Bahasa

It’s that time of the year again! Like they say, “A little bit of summer is what the whole year’s all about”, and this time, summer coincides with the Muslim religious holiday, Eid-al-Fitr. Since this is a festival that most of Indonesia celebrate, holiday-hotspot Bali will surely be buzzing with tourists from all over — expect some places to be packed like sardines! To prepare yourself, book the best restaurants beforehand so you won’t go home on an empty stomach. Here are some great places to celebrate the holiday season!

Ubud

Kemiri Restaurant (COMO Uma Ubud)

Welcome to the land of yoga and wellness. Take a stroll through Campuhan Ridge Walk, enjoy the lush scenery, and unplug for a bit. Afterwards, you can have an authentic Indonesian lunch at Hujan Locale, Kemiri, Nomad, or The Restaurant at the Chedi Club Tanah Gajah.

It’s time for some Bali-exploration! Be captivated by a kecak dance performance or visit the cheeky Ubud Monkey Forest for the ultimate Bali experience! After that, drop by the Habitat Cafe for a healthy and refreshing meal. But, if you feel like lazing the day away, sink into cool waters and watch the time fly by at Folk, or better yet! Enjoy stunning Ubud alongside Bali’s acclaimed sunset at Sayan House. Reservations are essential but fret not, we’ve got your back. Book your dinner at the best of Ubud — BLANCO par Mandif, Kubu at Mandapa, Pica, and bridges will be your best bets.

Seminyak

Mrs. Sippy Bali

Oh my, we seriously don’t know where to start. Seminyak is such a fun area to explore! Experience the largest saltwater pool at Mrs. Sippy, grab a quick bite at Bo & Bun, or put on your sunnies and sip on a cold rosé while enjoying a delightful meal at Ijen, whereby zero wastage is promoted to lower carbon footprint. Wander around Jl. Kayu Aya and pick your favourites from a treasure trove — from traditional handmade souvenirs to designer boutiques, you name it, this street has it. You won’t be lacking dinner options here in Seminyak with Mamasan, Sarong, Da Maria, and Barbacoa being definite favourites. When you’ve had your fill, dance the night away at La Favela, but don’t forget to snap some shots at the cute photobox on the second floor!

Canggu

From_the_Land_Tongseng_Kambing_1554128131
SVÁ Indonesian Tapas & Bar

If Seminyak and Ubud were to have a child, Canggu would be their baby. Start your day right by joining a barre class or relax through sunrise flow yoga at Fitspot Bali. Then, move on to indulge in great food at all-time favourite cafe Milk & Madu at Jl. Pantai Berawa, or enjoy a caffeine boost amidst ravishing rice fields at Cinta Cafe. Another must do is renting a motorbike and visiting the bustling local flea market around Batu Bolong area — like they say, reuse and recycle! Spend the rest of your afternoon lounging and watching the sunset from the beautiful La Brisa, surf at Echo Beach, or lay back and relax at the sophisticated COMO beach club. Spoil your taste buds with an exotic twist on traditional Indonesian flavour at SVÁ Indonesian Tapas & Bar. If Japanese is your thing, modern restaurants Musubi and Ji are some of the eateries we take delight in.

Kuta

When hunger strikes, pay a visit to our favourite Italian places — Il Tempio and Jamie’s Italian Bali are just around the corner. Treat yourself to a delicious meal of juicy, tender dry-aged meat at Henry’s Grill and Bar, or stuff your face at Feast Restaurant, located in Bali Kuta Resort. 8 Most Unique Coffees in Singapore

Come October 1st, it’ll be International Coffee Day, the day where all coffee aficionados unite in celebrating the gorgeous creation that is coffee! We commemorate this day in honour of all the hard work that has been put in to produce every cuppa – from the farms to your local coffeehouse, and into your hands.

This year, as a tribute to all the men & women in the coffee chain, we have gathered a list of the most uniquely flavoured coffees in Singapore, and where you can find them! Don’t forget to share this article with your coffee-lovin’ friend or S/O, and make a date to have a sip!

1. Oriole Coffee + Bar

image.png

image.png

Situated in front of the bustling town crowd near Somerset, Oriole Coffee serves up a mean cup of coffee, especially when it comes to their robust hand-pours such as the Taisho White. The Taisho range is served in cute glass bottles and features their famous cold brew made using coffee beans that have been roasted locally.

The Taisho White is a cold brew that has been enriched with a shot of Oriole’s specialty M.A.D milk made using macadamias, almonds, and dates. The end result? A brew that’s crisp and creamy, with a light hint of sweetness sans dairy – suitable for our lactose intolerant and vegan friends!

2. The Coffee Academics

Chill at Common Man Stan over satisfying nosh and brilliant drinks

Need to catch a mid-day break or a place to recuperate after the daily grind? Head down to Common Man Stan for a comfortable respite in the CBD. Decked out in minimalistic modern-chic interiors with a clean and inviting vibe, stepping into this cafe strips away your worries almost instantaneously.

The dishes at Common Man Stan isn’t complicated either: while their breakfast and lunch menus see the usual cafe selections, the dinner menu delves into a more gratifying lineup. If you didn’t know about Common Man Stan’s dinner offerings, here’s a sneak peek to let you in on the 411.

The Shining Starter: Tofu Sisig

00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180717194751819_COVER
Traditionally made with chopped up pork bits, crisp from the sizzling hot plate it’s served in, sisig is a popular pork-based dish from the Philippines. However, Common Man Stan serves Tofu Sisig instead. The fried tofu is perfect for soaking up all that tangy dressing, while the tortilla chips make for the best vessel to transport those tasty morsels of tofu into your mouth. Appetising and packed with flavour, we can’t think of a better way to kickstart a meal.

Magnificent Mains: Pork Belly Cha Shu & Herb Crusted Chicken Schnitzel

Pork Belly Cha Siu
Once you’re done with your appetiser, say hello to the indulgent Pork Belly Cha Shu. Marvellously fatty (read: delicious) pork belly is cooked until it’s fork-tender and served with umami Tonkotsu sauce and a side of truffled kangkong . The flavours are robust and fulfilling, and the pumpkin puree helps to cut through the pork fat with its mellow sweetness.

Herb Crusted Chicken Schnitzel
Whether you’re packing an appetite or sharing a meal, the Herb Crusted Chicken Schnitzel is your go to. Crisp yet tender and overall satisfying, you can’t go wrong with this plate of comfort! The herbed crust help zhoosh up the cutlets, and a squirt of lemon brightens up the flavours too. To cleanse the palate, the celeriac & radish remoulade works wonders.

A Delightful Dessert: Churros with Caramel or Chocolate Sauce

00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180717210951945_COVER00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180717193310420_COVER
Where good coffee is abundant, one does not get simply end a meal without ordering a plate of Churros. These golden twiglets are dusted with cinnamon sugar and served with a side of caramel or chocolate sauce. Pair that with a side of warm coffee and you’re all set for the night! Need a little pick me up? We recommend swapping the java for the CMCR Hot Chocolate with Grounded Pleasures Artisanal Chocolate (trust us on this one).

From fulfilling cafe fare in the day to generous dinner selections to end the night, you can always count on trusty ol’ Common Man Stan to bring you the best of both meals.

9 Eateries in Serangoon Gardens Perfect for Any Occasion

When in doubt, go to Serangoon Gardens. Whether you’re with a huge, boisterous group or looking for a quiet weekend brunch, there’s probably a restaurant here that fits the bill. Home to the famous Chomp Chomp and a growing number of delicious, affordable restaurants, this quiet neighbourhood hangout is now a foodie heaven. With options suitable for family days, large gatherings, cafe treats, supper, and sweets, Serangoon Gardens truly is the perfect choice for any occasion.

Family Friendly

Sun Ray Cafe

Sun Ray Cafe
Cr: vanillapup.com

The perfect picture of a neighbourhood cafe, Sun Ray Cafe is quaint and understated. However, what the cafe lacks in fancy interior design it more than makes up for in substance. It may not look it, but behind the unassuming facade, you can find premium hand-brewed, hand-roasted coffees, meticulously-brewed teas, and even homemade bread and spreads. Each bite and sip is dripping with love and care to give you warm and fuzzy feelings all morning long.

Besides being a great place for true connoisseurs of coffee and tea, Sun Ray Cafe is also a great go-to for furkids and pet parents to spend some quality time together. There’s even a section of their menu dedicated to foods safe for your furry friends so they can enjoy a meal with you for once.

Find it at 79 Brighton Crescent, Singapore 559218.

If you want to know what it feels like to be a Korean child returning home for dinner, just have a meal at Hanwoori Korean Restaurant. Its bouncy and ebullient owner is the quintessential ahjumma, chatting with diners and making everyone feel at home.

Homestyle Korean comfort foods reign supreme at this bustling family restaurant, with favourites like Korean pancakes, spicy tofu stew, and kimchi hotpot. While everything here tastes amazing, the soups and stews steal the show with their homemade broths, which are made from scratch every morning. And let’s not forget the generous servings of free side dishes!

Large groups

Steam Box

Steam Box
Cr: sgfoodonfoot.com

If there’s one type of food made for sharing with the gang, it’s steamboat. And unlike the traditional steamboat we know and love with its oily soup and overcooked ingredients, Steambox makes sure you can stick to your diet plans as well. That’s because, as the name suggests, you steam your food rather than boil it, so all the food retains all its delicious flavours and nutrients

Of course, the best part of any steamboat is the broth at the end – where’s that amazing broth? It’s in the congee they prepare at the start of the meal. All the drippings from the steaming rack above it go down into the rice. You can imagine how delicious the porridge must be once you’re done with all that seafood, meats, and veggies.

Find it at 68 Serangoon Garden Way, Singapore 555962.

Hipster Cafe Food

Arbite

Arbite
Cr: jacqsowhat.com

Local or Western breakfast? Sometimes, it’s impossible to decide. At Arbite, you can get the best of both worlds on one delicious plate. With a touch of creativity and lots of spices, Arbite gives typical Western cafe items a Singaporean upgrade. The result is an indulgent meal that’s as heartwarming as a classic brunch, punctuated with all the punchy local flavours we all adore.

Apart from the usual fries with tom yum or salted egg dip (calm yourself, they have that too), more adventurous dishes include a Beef Rendang Mac & Cheese, the Arbite Breakfast featuring kaya toast and pandan-infused Ngoh Hiang, and Breaded Mushrooms that come with curry and lime mayo. Essentially, they combine everyone’s favourite comfort foods from the two cuisines – in other words, the perfect start to the weekend.

Find it at 66 A Serangoon Garden Way, Singapore 555962.
Click here for more information on Arbite.

Artease

Artease
Cr: artease.sg

If you need a break from the daily grind, Artease is a sanctuary that would be perfect for you. They specialise in teas and grilled cheese, which is probably the most calming and comforting combo we know. Tea and grilled cheese sound simple, but they’ve come up with so many variations that these two timeless classics become exciting and new.

As if grilled cheese wasn’t already good enough, Artease also has options for different fillings – including a very tempting Extra Cheesy, as well as Chicken, Tuna, and Pesto. As for teas, they’ve got an absolutely delicious Salted Caramel Milk Tea – touted by fans as the best they’ve ever tasted.

Find it at 3 Phillip Street, #01-01, Singapore 048693.

Supper

Plonk on Maju

Plonk Main DishPlonk Dessert

Get wine, cocktails, and fantastic food without the hefty price tag and uppity fuss. Plonk, aptly named after the Australian slang for affordable wine, is a friendly and casual spot that’s open from morning until past midnight, making it perfect for anything from breakfast to late night suppers. It’s also great for an impromptu drink, so you and your pals can grab some tipples and not worry about the dress code and the cost.

Have a full-bodied Argentinian Malbec, or be a little whimsical and try their Serangoon Sling. As for food, they’ve got an extensive menu of Mediterranean-inspired bites to go with their equally impressive alcohol selection. We especially love their creamy, tangy, and savoury Seared Halloumi, and the rich and piquant Dukkah Spiced Beer Battered Barramundi. For sharing, the pizzas range from classics like Margherita to curious dishes you can’t help but want to try, like Kalamata Olives & Irish Goat Cheese.

Chomp Chomp Food Centre

Chong Pang
Cr: singaporebestfoods.com

What’s Serangoon Gardens without Chomp Chomp? It’s the obvious choice for those craving some good old hawker fare like satay, carrot cake, and barbecued seafood. Affordable hawker centre prices don’t hurt either, making it great for supper on a budget.

Everyone familiar with Chomp Chomp will already have a favourite stall, but if you don’t frequent the north, here are some things you could start off with. Get your barbecue fix with a healthy serving of satay from Hong Sha Li Satay, chicken wings from Chong Pang Chicken Wings, and seafood from Hai Wei Yuan BBQ. Wash all that down with an impressively tall sugar cane tower from Ding Hao that just begs a spot on your Instagram.

Find it at 20 Kensington Park Rd, Singapore 557269.

Ultra Violet your diet!

In case you missed it, Pantone announced their colour of the year for 2018 – Ultra Violet. A blue-based purple that is “complex and contemplative”, we foresee this colour popping up frequently in our lives over the coming year. Here’s how to incorporate this spunky shade into your diet!

Taro Milk Tea

Everyone loves milk tea, but not a lot of people are familiar with the deliciousness that is taro milk tea. Take milk tea, blend it with some taro root, add some pearls, and you have a whole new taste. The funky colour of the drink may not appeal to everyone, but the taste will definitely make up for it!  Give Sharetea’s recipe a try – the richness of the milk tea blends well with the starchiness of the taro root, to create the perfect drink to have on a sweltering day in Singapore – you won’t even need to top up the sugar level to enjoy this sweet treat.

Eggplant

Eggplants are a great source of fibre and many other essential nutrients such as Vitamin B6, phytonutrients, and potassium. Despite a slew of health benefits, some people still find the sticky flesh and slight bitter taste unpalatable. Since eggplant has been a mainstay of Mediterranean cuisine for centuries, you can count on them to get it right. Try Blu Kouzina’s Imam Baildi – a Greek eggplant dish served with tomatoes and feta cheese. The tangy tomato and rich flavour of cheese help to mask the bitterness of the eggplant.

Purple-Gringo

Violet Cocktails

There aren’t a lot of spirits that can produce a vibrant purple hue. We can think of certain vodkas, Chambord, and berry-based chasers. However, the danger with some pretty mixes is that taste is often foregone for looks. Some bars in Singapore have perfected pretty drinks, though, and our personal favourite is Smoke & Mirrors. Their Purple Gringo is a deliciously sweet blend of Juniper Agave and Sherry, and has a gorgeous violet tinge from the Juniper berry in the agave – one of those rare drinks that taste as good as they look.

Purple Sweet Potato

These violet spuds are rich in antioxidants and delicious to boot! The versatility of this root means that it can be baked, steamed, and even mashed, according to your preference. The humble sweet potato is the mainstay of African and Asian cuisines, and is great way of a healthy carbohydrate to your diet. If you ever tire of the same old steamed potato, check out K-Tower’s Sweet Potato Cone. The dish presents a new take on this tasty treat – a fried sweet potato roll that is not too greasy and served piping hot.

Butterfly Pea Tea

You’ve probably seen the butterfly pea plant dozens of times – they’re one of the most common plants in Singapore. This modest flower has become more common on menus recently due to its high content of anthocyanins. The vibrant blue of the petals also gives this drink it’s colour. There are loads of Butterfly Pea teas out there, but our vote goes to The Talad Drink for their generous portion sizes, affordable prices, and gorgeous packaging.

Galaxy cakes are not only gorgeous to look at, they’re a treat too! First popularised by Insider Food, these cakes are now available in several places in Singapore. Pill cakes, milky way cakes, and galaxy cakes all refer to the same thing – a cake that is covered in a shiny purple coating. These cakes are usually chocolate-flavoured and filled with an oozing filling that will make for the perfect food Boomerang. Acai Bowls

Acai bowls have been an Instagram trend for a while now. If you never got in on the craze, now’s a good time to catch up! Acai is a type of berry with a high level of antioxidants and can help to prevent arthritis, inflammation and obesity. Acai bowls typically consist of acai berry pulp layered with fruit, granola and other toppings such as melon seeds. There are plenty of places in Singapore were you can get your superfood fix, but we like An Acai Affair as they offer bowls that can be customised as well as an array of toppings and vegan options.

Want to feel on top of the world? Re-energize yourself with a gorgeous evening view of Keppel Harbour and Sentosa. Propeller is the first rooftop bar at Harbourfront, and specialises in concocting creative cocktails. It’s tough to pick a favourite from their selection of delicious tipples, but if we had to choose, The Propeller Bay – a delicious mix of vodka, orange juice, raspberry syrup, and thyme – would be it. The homemade lime espuma topping can be torched for extra zest and is the perfect touch to propel our spirits to greater heights.

Of course, great drinks must be paired with great tapas! The bar offers a mighty combination of modern inventions, like the incredibly indulgent Pan-seared Scallops with Citrus Fennel Salad or the Seared Beef Cubes with Truffle Mayonnaise. Of course, that’s not all: if you’re lucky, you can watch the Sentosa Boardwalk fireworks from Propeller’s plush sofas. (Pro tip: it’s at 8pm.)

Chef Wan’s Kitchen

He’s making his comeback with a new mix of Moroccan, Javanese, Peranakan and Spanish recipes passed down from his grandmother to mother to auntie! (Don’t we all wish that our family had heirloom recipe books too?!) With dishes like Lawar Salad, Lontong, and Lemak Noodles, we’re head over heels for the lineup of heritage eats on the menu! The restaurant is currently pending its Halal certification, post-MUIS audit, so all Muslim friends are welcome too!

Free-Flow Brunch at Only $58++? Get Yours at Salted & Hung!

Mention the word ‘brunch’ and it’s likely you’re already thinking about the aroma of coffee, fulfilling breakfast platters, and the ambience of a cafe on a Sunday afternoon. But we’ll let you in on a little secret: what if brunch can be so much more than that?

Taking the usual brunch experience up a notch is Salted & Hung‘s Weekend Brunch Hangout, where diners get to tuck into free-flow (yes, we said FREE-FLOW) brunch items on Saturdays and Sundays. With a menu that boasts over 12 showstopping dishes, as well as a charcuterie and antipasti bar, this has to be one of the best kept secrets in town! Let us give you the rundown of some of our favourite dishes on the menu (click here for the full menu).

SH Portobello & Egg On Toast

Simple in name but not in flavour, Salted & Hung’s Portobello & Egg on Toast is something of a revelation. The robust sourdough bread carries a deep and slightly tangy taste which perfectly complements the meaty portobello and caramelised onions that it comes topped with. That torched cheese? YUM.

[NSFW] EGG PORN WARNING: Cut through the gleaming egg and let the golden yolk add another dimension of flavour to this already tasty snack!

SH Smoked Halibut & Caviar Crostini (1)

Another firm Chope team favourite is their Smoked Halibut and Caviar Crostini. The crostini bears the signature char from the Salted & Hung team’s skillful grilling. With each bite, the moreish mix of smoked halibut and savoury caviar create nuances of textures and flavours.

Freemantle Octopus, Lentils, Caponata

Wagyu Ragu, Homemade Pasta, Beef Fat Crumbs

Small plates aside, don’t forget to give some of their meatier options a try. With tantalising items such as Fremantle Octopus chargrilled to perfection, juicy Chicken Thigh, and satisfying Wagyu Ragu, resistance is futile.

SH Steak, Eggs & Tomatoes

While Salted & Hung likes to keep things simple, the flavours of the dishes that fly out the kitchen are never compromised. A fine example comes in the form of their Steak, Eggs, & Tomatoes: a delicate slab of Angus beef short rib is sous vide at a low temperature for 48 hours, and then lightly smoked with applewood and mesquite before hitting the grill. With so much care put into preparing the short rib, it doesn’t come as a surprise that each bite packs a complex punch. Served on the side are dainty, charred, pickled green tomatoes which were a welcoming cleanser in between mouthfuls of steak.

With irresistible selections such as the Peanut Butter Cornetto and French Toast Doughnuts, we won’t hold it against you if you decide to go nuts on the desserts front. Their Hibiscus, Berries & Px took us by surprise with its fresh, tart, yet sweet combination.

For an afternoon of free-flow delights to knock your socks off, the whole shebang costs only $58++ per person. Plus, top up an additional $30++ for unlimited beer, prosecco, and house pour wines for two hours! The best part? Each Sunday from now until 3rd September 2017, score a brunch seat at only $50++ per person when you book a table through either the Chope app or website with the promo code 50SALTED!
