Beach Road Scissor-Cut Curry Rice is the go-to place when you’re craving for a huge plate of rice, heaving with a selection of fried and braised meats, all drowned in curry and a dark braised sauce. That might sound really specific right now, but once you’ve tried their scissor-cut curry rice, you’ll know what we mean.

It may not be the most Instagrammable, but there’s something comforting and satisfying about this chye png (mixed dishes with rice) style fare. For first-timers, stick with the classics like braised pork belly, crispy pork cutlet, chap chye (stewed cabbage), fried egg, as well as a copious amount of gooey curry and braised sauce.

The Hainanese style curry is light, slightly sweet, with just a hint of spice – very unlike the lemak (creamy, coconutty goodness) you would associate with a coconut-based curry. Best of all, it acts as a “glue” which binds all that fried and braised goodness, and makes it perfect for guzzling down at 1am in the morning. The ever-popular Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak always has a queue in front of the store so you might have to wait for a little to get your nasi lemak fix. But the good thing about such a rapid turnover is that you will almost always get a steaming plate of freshly cooked rice and sizzling hot, crispy chicken wings, just out the fryer!

We really like that Boon Lay Power is relatively affordable too, as a set meal starts at SGD$3.50. The chicken set, for example, will get you fragrant coconut rice, a fried chicken wing, one fried egg, peanuts and ikan bilis (dried anchovies), sliced cucumbers and their famous sambal chilli. Many would agree that the soul of a good nasi lemak is the sambal chilli, and Boon Lay Power’s has a punch with just the right amount of sweet.

For those who are too lazy to head out, fret not as Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak offers delivery till 2am. Delivery starts at SGD$5 for addresses within Jurong, and $10 for outside the Jurong area. For corporate events or really, REALLY ravenous individuals, you can place your orders online but there’s a minimum order of SGD$100. Power lah!

Are you and your friends looking for a place that opens till late, serves drinks, and has great food as well? Why not try some chimaek (a portmanteau of chicken and maekju, Korean for beer) at Chicken Up? It’s so good that it just might become a Friday night tradition.

Twice fried to give it a crunchier skin with less grease (and less guilt), nobody does fried chicken better than the Koreans! Our favourites for supper (or anytime of the day) include the Yangnyum (a sweet and spicy sauce made with garlic, ginger, chilli, soy sauce, honey, and sesame oil) fried chicken, Kimchi fries (golden fries loaded with kimchi, drenched with cheese and mayo, shredded pork, onions, and jalapeños), as well as the UFO Bulgogi Stew (well marinated bulgogi with fresh vegetables and glass noodles on a hot skillet, surrounded by a trio of melted cheese, fried rice, and fluffy, cooked eggs).

After that decidedly decadent meal, Chicken Up has a variety of refreshingly, light bingsu (shaved ice dessert, topped with ingredients like mango, watermelon, and Oreos) to choose from, and they are all sized for sharing. Mmm… Mah sit sso yo (Korean for “Delicious”)!

What differentiates Siam Square Mookata from other mookata places, is that their selection of ingredients is available in small servings – starting as low as SGD$1.80 per plate – rather than fixed sets. Serving Indian Muslim food 24 hours daily, Thasevi Food is home to THE original Jalan Kayu Roti Prata (yep… that claim is even on their signboard).

You might be wondering: so what makes Thasevi’s roti prata the quintessential Jalan Kayu Roti Prata?

Well, the prata is smaller and rounder in shape, and while it is crispy on the outside, it is flaky on the inside – perfect for mopping up the curry with.  But most importantly, it goes tremendously well with a mug of teh tarik (pulled milk tea). Ah… The perfect end after a long shift or a night of mugging at the library.

It might be a little on the small side for those with larger appetites, but the good thing about that is you’ll have more room for other equally well-executed dishes like the murtabak, nasi briyani, as well as a tempting selection of Indian rojak.

If Thasevi Food gets too crowded, try Thohirah Cafeela Restaurant, which is just next door. The establishment offers an equally extensive (and mouth-watering) menu that covers all sorts of Indian Muslim food.

Traditionally enjoyed in the day, but equally good (or better) in the middle of the night, dim sum is one of those foods that is well loved by hungry groups of friends, families, and late-night partygoers. And at 3am in the morning, no one does it better than Swee Choon, a dim sum specialist who offers a wide variety of Hong Kong and Shanghainese style fare, that is no frills and affordable.

Be sure to try their signature Mee Suah Kueh (deep fried vermicelli cake), Steamed Liu Sha Bao (salted egg custard bun), Shanghai Xiao Long Bao (steamed dumplings with meat and broth filling), and Prawn and Banana Fritters. Need something more substantial? Have a Traditional Irish Dinner

Maybe you don’t like the drunk and jolly pop-culture image of Irish culture. Thankfully, St. Patrick’s day doesn’t have to be all about dancing Leprechauns wearing shamrocks and waving pots of gold.

The Irish Stew is the national dish of Ireland, and it’s not hard to see why. Made with ingredients grown in Ireland and integral to its cuisine, it is essentially Irish culture condensed into a savoury, heart-warming meal. If you’re thinking of popping by, here’s the lowdown on what each of the restaurants has to offer.

If the name hasn’t given it away already, Icehaus specialises in cold dishes such as seafood on ice, cold cuts, salads, sandwiches, and desserts. And by desserts, we mean they dish up quality Italian soft-serve ice cream from in-house specialist dessert machines. They’ve even got a special collaboration with Neh Neh Pop, owned by local Singaporean Chef Bjorn Shen; get your hands on the Andaz Pop, a palm sugar-coconut ice cream and red bean-caramel filled popsicle, coated with pandan-flavoured white chocolate.

Diners looking for a refreshing start to their meal will appreciate the Heirloom Tomato Salad. Tomatoes of various colours stand out against the basil, whole olives, and a splash of apple balsamic vinegar and Tuscan olive oil. A mishmash of greens, yellows, and reds, the colours tempt you to take a bite.

On the other hand, the Boston Lobster Rolls come as a triad of warm, autumn hues. Comprised of brioche rolls with lobster filling, it’s simple and straightforward. A mouthful of each gives you springy clusters of lobster meat, coated in tangy chipotle mayonnaise with creamy avocado. We liked how the refreshing tomatoes and jalapeños cut through the flavours as well.

Entering Auntie’s Wok & Steam is akin to stepping into your favourite aunt’s kitchen where smells of familiar stir-fries welcome you with open arms. You’ll also notice that the tables here have more seats too, staying true to the Chinese tradition of enjoying big family meals together.

One of the signatures here is Auntie’s Ma Po Silken Tofu, which is actually quite different from the usual Ma Po dishes you’re used to. Auntie’s version is a lot gentler to the palate; silky tofu cubes are stir-fried in a thick and tangy sauce with luxurious Alaskan king crab and crisp wood ear mushroom.

Pair that with their Organic Fried Rice, a glorious mound speckled red and white with shreds of crab meat, egg, and slivers of asparagus. Auntie Wok & Steam’s servings are also extremely generous (read: GINORMOUS), so don’t forget to bring your #foodsquad for this one.

Plancha’Lah! is a mash-up of two words: the Spanish word ‘a la plancha’, meaning to cook on the griddle and the common Singlish expression ‘lah!’. Much like its name, this eatery offers its diners Asian-inspired fare done through the Spanish griddle-cooking method. Plancha’lah has a smaller dining space, but the intimate setting allows diners to have a full view of what the chefs here can do.

Order the Patagonian Toothfish “en papillote” for a little performance to remember. Watch as the chef seasons and cooks the toothfish, fennel, shimeiji mushrooms, and tomatoes right in front of you before placing everything into a cooking bag. This is where the fun starts: the chef splashes a bit of water onto the griddle, getting a nice drastic sizzle before putting the treasured parcel on top to finish it off. It’s served as is, bag and all, so that diners get to open the parcel like a little gift.

We were particularly excited about the Hokkaido Scallops, too. The chef skillfully sears two plump scallops together with green asparagus, sugar snap peas, and trompette mushroom. Everything is plated with a truffle butter finish before it arrives at the table. Creamy, luscious, and inviting, this is definitely a dish to look forward to!

 

The Green Oven

Ok, full disclosure: the massive green oven situated by the entrance of this restaurant is the main draw here. While it adds a rustic touch to the ambience, the oven is also the hearth and home of the kitchen which gives diners an indication that the dishes here spells ‘Comfort’ with a capital C.

The Green Oven takes your everyday Mac & Cheese and gives it a little upgrade; their Lobster Mac & Cheese is an indulgence unto itself. The pasta is al-dente, with lobster chunks and a slathering of cheese that’s crisp on top and molten underneath. If you need a solid pick-me-up, this baby will have you sorted.

For those seeking comfort in the form of something meatier, you can’t go wrong with the Braised Osso Buco. Again, comfort is key: a weighty veal shank and vegetables go into the oven in a bath of Barolo wine jus (yasss). The result is a casserole with its contents fork-tender, dripping with flavour.

Pro-tip: Order a Brumble to go with this meal. A concoction of Phraya rum, Merlet Creme de Cassis, lemon, and vanilla bitters, this rich cocktail make for a perfect pairing. We kid you not.

With barbecued grub and grills as their focus, you can bet that you’re getting flavour, flavour, flavour here.

We dove right into the Black Angus Beef Skewer, presented on a small clay grill with fragrant jasmine rice. The beef cubes are tender, each delicately flavoured with just the right amount of soy-mirin glaze. Have it with the lightly-charred shishito peppers a mild hint of heat. In contrast with the beef is the Crispy Kipfler Potatoes in a rich sour cream and Parmesan cheese sauce. Potatoes, sour cream, AND cheese? You heard us right.

Adding to the lineup of tantalising grills is the Chicken Burger with Teriyaki Sauce and shredded cabbage. Chicken patties tend to lean on the dry side but Smoke & Peppers will impress you with the patty on this bad boy that’s done to a juicy perfection. The sweet and savoury sauce elevates the flavour of the patty, and shredded cabbage gives it texture and crunch. Round up the meal with the Mango-Sago Panna Cotta and coconut ice cream, and you’re good to go.

8 Mouthwatering Mookata Joints in Singapore

This house believes Singapore is a country of soup and barbecue lovers. Just look at the vast number of steamboat joints, Korean barbecue spots, and that old-school stalwart Seoul Garden. It’s no surprise then, that mookata, a Thai amalgamation of Korean barbecue and Chinese hotpot, has found tons of fans here.

Originating from Thailand, the term ‘mookata’ is actually ‘mu kratha’, with “mu” meaning pig or pork and “kratha” referring to a skillet or pan. The pan in question typically comes with a dome top surrounded by a trench for the soup. It all sounds pretty average until you see the cooking in action. Scores of meat and seafood plaster the top of that dome (stuck down by a generous layer of pork lard), bubbling and sizzling away as fat and umami goodness drip down into the moat to create some delicious, delicious soup.

Stomach rumbling and mouth watering yet? Perfect, then you’re ready to embrace these mookata must-tries. Be warned, though, fancy clothes not advised here because the smells will linger.

For your standard, no-frills mookata buffet paired with some of the most affordable prices in Singapore, Happy Mookata is great. Drinks are not included in the buffet, but they’re not expensive either, plus the Thai Milk Tea here is of the less sweet variety, perfect for avoiding an early death. The seafood is frozen, so depending on your luck you could get fresh ones or not so fresh ones, but the meats are usually dependable.

Chope Tries: $2.50, $15, and $30 Nasi Lemak

Nasi lemak is one of those foods that has seen plenty of iterations in recent years. With more and more places around the island offering the delicious dish at various price points, we decided to find out if it’s actually worth shelling out extra cash for a “better” quality dish.

Wan Xing Nasi Lemak and Economic Bee Hoon ($2.50)

Wan Xing is known for their cheap food – they have a couple of outlets, if we recall correctly – so it’s no wonder their stall frequently sees snaking queues. The nasi lemak incorporates all the ingredients you would expect – from the spicy sambal to sunny side up – but you can add various dishes from their selection. The rice is supposed to have a green tinge but ours was quite faint. Taste-wise, it had a mild pandan flavour and wasn’t particularly fragrant, but blended perfectly with the sambal, which, to be honest, tasted like most other sambals from the hawker centre. The peanut and ikan bilis mix was crunchy and salty, but relatively sparse. However, for the low price point, this dish was filling and rather delicious, something we would buy again if we were in the neighbourhood and craving nasi lemak.

The Coconut Club ($15)

The Coconut Club has been popular among the lunchtime crowd in the city for a while now, so we were curious to see how it held up against the low, low price of $2.50. This spot pays careful attention to the quality of their dishes – think using old crop Thai Jasmine Rice and coconuts from one specific plantation in Sabak Bernam to create fluffy, fragrant rice.

When the dish arrived at the table, it certainly looked impressive, from the colours to the amount of each component. We tried the rice and that was good, fluffy and not drenched in oil. We tried the homemade sambal and that was good too, a balance of sweet and spicy. But then we tried the chicken and forgot everything else; it was definitely the highlight of the dish. Unlike the generic fried chicken of the other two, the chicken here had a spicy, uniquely Asian flavour and featured a delightfully crunchy skin. Would we come back? Yes (after payday), if only to eat that crisp chicken skin again.

Chatterbox (Mandarin Orchard Singapore) ($30)

Given the price tag, this must have been the best of the lot, right? We hoped it was, we wanted it to be! The excitement was real, but dampened a bit when the dish was laid before us. The sambal looked legitimately crafted and there was the addition of prawns, but the rest of the components looked like any nasi lemak joint out there. Nevermind, we thought, it’s all in the taste. But while the tangy, spicy prawns did leave us satisfied and the otah was undeniably flavourful, neither the sambal nor the rice left us in gastronomic heaven. That’s not to say it wasn’t good, however, the dish as a whole was fragrant and recognisably ‘nasi lemak’, but lacked a real punch that would elevate it to legendary status. On the whole, it’s a great place to bring someone you’re looking to impress with classy local faves, or for people who prefer less spice and more subtle flavours.

Origin Grill & Bar Review: Top marks for steaks, seafood, and mid-century modern vibe

Hotel restaurants have been upping their game lately, but the new Origin Grill & Bar at Shangri-La Hotel hits the ball right out of the park.

Occupying the site of the former Japanese restaurant Nadaman, Origin has been transformed into a 1930s train station with a mid-century modern vibe: arches frame the dining space, diners lounge on leather Tripolina chairs and curved benches, and bartenders hand drinks over a counter that looks like a ticketing office.

The restaurant’s design stirs up the idea of embarking on a journey, but it is the food that completes the gastronomic adventure.

Despite opening only in late December, Origin is quickly gaining a reputation as a top-notch steakhouse.

There are wagyu options exclusive to the restaurant, such as the 500-day Japanese diet-fed Shiro Wagyu (with a marbling score of 9), and the snow-aged full blood wagyu (Grade A4). The latter is preserved and aged in a snow-covered room, which helps the meat retain moisture and deliver that fresh, buttery taste as it melts in your mouth. It is worth trying on a special occasion.

There are other beef options too, whether grass- or grain-fed, pure- or crossbred (or full blood!), Angus or wagyu, or from Australia, Japan, and Ireland. The selection, the menu boasts, offers some of the best beef in the world.

But Origin is not just for those of us who crave that ecstasy that accompanies every bite into a slab of juicy meat. Chef Flanagan is equally adept at seafood, all sourced from sustainable lines, and gives a number of them her own twist.

The pan-seared Hokkaido scallops, for example, almost transports you to Thailand with its mix of fragrant chili jam, holy basil and crushed peanuts, but still remains the focal point of the dish. It was served as an appetiser, but I would have happily eaten it as a main.

Another favourite was the miso butter glazed black cod: the miso butter is a subtle way to pack flavour into this mild fish, which flaked off perfectly.

For dessert, we highly recommend the yuzu lemon tart, which is accompanied by an adorable strawberry iced lolly. Sour and sweet rolled into one, it is a refreshing way to end off the night.

Service is excellent at Origin too, with the servers well-acquainted with the menu and forthcoming with their excellent wine pairing suggestions — though one would not expect any less at the Shang.

Whether you’re in need of an aperitif or a night cap, the bar is a must-visit for cocktail lovers, where manager Adam Bursik, from the now-defunct speakeasy Library on Keong Saik Road, has crafted some 20 drinks inspired by five key districts in Singapore.

The signature drink, Origin, is a spicy gin-based cocktail made with sugar cane honey, nutmeg, pepper, charred pineapple and lime husk wine. It tastes exactly how like you’d expect 18th-century, trade hub Singapore to be.

The Pearl, from his futuristic Marina Bay section, is a smooth and floral concoction of Black Forest gin with tofu, elderflower, sea grapes and mugi shochu. It’s an alcoholic tau huay (soy bean curd), served up in a Pinterest-worthy ceramic oyster glass — the perfect ambassador for Bursik and his boundary-breaking recipes.

Origin is sure to please the aspiring architects, foodies and alcoholics. And if you happen to be like us — all three rolled into one body — a meal there might be one of your more memorable ones this year.
