Bali’s top 30 for the holiday season!

Eng | Bahasa

It’s that time of the year again! Like they say, “A little bit of summer is what the whole year’s all about”, and this time, summer coincides with the Muslim religious holiday, Eid-al-Fitr. Since this is a festival that most of Indonesia celebrate, holiday-hotspot Bali will surely be buzzing with tourists from all over — expect some places to be packed like sardines! To prepare yourself, book the best restaurants beforehand so you won’t go home on an empty stomach. Here are some great places to celebrate the holiday season!

Ubud

Kemiri Restaurant (COMO Uma Ubud)

Welcome to the land of yoga and wellness. Take a stroll through Campuhan Ridge Walk, enjoy the lush scenery, and unplug for a bit. Afterwards, you can have an authentic Indonesian lunch at Hujan Locale, Kemiri, Nomad, or The Restaurant at the Chedi Club Tanah Gajah.

It’s time for some Bali-exploration! Be captivated by a kecak dance performance or visit the cheeky Ubud Monkey Forest for the ultimate Bali experience! After that, drop by the Habitat Cafe for a healthy and refreshing meal. But, if you feel like lazing the day away, sink into cool waters and watch the time fly by at Folk, or better yet! Enjoy stunning Ubud alongside Bali’s acclaimed sunset at Sayan House. Reservations are essential but fret not, we’ve got your back. Book your dinner at the best of Ubud — BLANCO par Mandif, Kubu at Mandapa, Pica, and bridges will be your best bets.

Seminyak

Mrs. Sippy Bali

Oh my, we seriously don’t know where to start. Seminyak is such a fun area to explore! Experience the largest saltwater pool at Mrs. Sippy, grab a quick bite at Bo & Bun, or put on your sunnies and sip on a cold rosé while enjoying a delightful meal at Ijen, whereby zero wastage is promoted to lower carbon footprint. Wander around Jl. Kayu Aya and pick your favourites from a treasure trove — from traditional handmade souvenirs to designer boutiques, you name it, this street has it. You won’t be lacking dinner options here in Seminyak with Mamasan, Sarong, Da Maria, and Barbacoa being definite favourites. When you’ve had your fill, dance the night away at La Favela, but don’t forget to snap some shots at the cute photobox on the second floor!

Canggu

From_the_Land_Tongseng_Kambing_1554128131
SVÁ Indonesian Tapas & Bar

If Seminyak and Ubud were to have a child, Canggu would be their baby. Start your day right by joining a barre class or relax through sunrise flow yoga at Fitspot Bali. Then, move on to indulge in great food at all-time favourite cafe Milk & Madu at Jl. Pantai Berawa, or enjoy a caffeine boost amidst ravishing rice fields at Cinta Cafe. Another must do is renting a motorbike and visiting the bustling local flea market around Batu Bolong area — like they say, reuse and recycle! Spend the rest of your afternoon lounging and watching the sunset from the beautiful La Brisa, surf at Echo Beach, or lay back and relax at the sophisticated COMO beach club. Spoil your taste buds with an exotic twist on traditional Indonesian flavour at SVÁ Indonesian Tapas & Bar. If Japanese is your thing, modern restaurants Musubi and Ji are some of the eateries we take delight in.

10 View-tiful Places To Dine At Around Singapore

Tired of the same ol’ cafés and restaurants that you frequent? Think that the only best view of Singapore is from the Skypark at Marina Bay Sands? Well, think again. We’ve travelled around our sunny island to put together a list of 10 places to dine at, that all have beautiful views to boot. And to make it easier, we’ve categorised them according to their regions!

North

1. The Summerhouse

Processed with VSCO with c7 presetProcessed with VSCO with c8 preset

Many couples have gotten engaged or recited their vows on the premises of The Summerhouse, and it’s easy to see why. The property is essentially a countryside summer escape that’ll make you forget that you’re in Singapore. To really up the ante of your dining experience, ask for the charming Garden Domes, which provide a magical space for private dinner parties of up to eight diners, or a romantic dinner for two. These fully air-conditioned geodesic domes allow you to wine and dine, in the garden, under the stars, in absolute comfort.

The Summerhouse also has a strong focus on the farm to table experience, and sources ingredients from a farming collective of growers, producers, and kelongs. In fact, the garnishes and herbs that you see on your dinner plate might just be harvested from the in-house edible garden that surrounds the idyllic restaurant.

Find it at 3 Park Lane, Singapore 798387.

2. Whisk & Paddle

Whisk & Paddle_View
Cr: whiskandpaddle.com.sg

To be more precise, Whisk & Paddle is located in the North-Eastern part of Singapore, and is situated right next to the Punggol Waterway. It’s probably the closest thing we’ll ever get to a café by the river, but it’s no less scenic. Also, here’s good news for parents with kids or fur-kids: this establishment welcomes both humans and their furry friends.

Besides an all-day breakfast, Whisk & Paddle also offers a myriad of Western dishes like duck confit, fish & chips, pasta, as well as hand-stretched thin crust pizzas, so there’s definitely something here for everyone. If it’s not too hot out, we recommend sitting at the veranda; it’s the perfect place to relish in the tranquil ambience with a cuppa, and also the ideal chillout spot for an ice cold beer in the evenings.

Find it at 10 Tebing Lane, #01-01, Singapore 828836.

South

3. Tamarind Hill

You can find Tamarind Hill at Labrador Park, home to the only rocky sea-cliff on mainland Singapore that is accessible to the public. Housed in a colonial bungalow, the restaurant boasts both traditional and modern Thai and Burmese cuisine, as well as a picturesque view of the sea. Some of the must-tries include the home-style classic dishes like som tam (spicy green papaya salad), red tom yam seafood soup, and the moreish massaman beef curry.

After your meal, stop by the beautiful, black and white bar, and take your pick from a great selection of house-infused gins, signature cocktails, and fine wines curated from over 11 countries.

4. Ocean Restaurant by Cat Cora

Ocean_View
Cr: Resort World Sentosa

For those wondering if that’s the actual view you’ll be getting when you dine at Ocean Restaurant. Yes, it is. After all, Ocean Restaurant’s main attraction is that it is Singapore’s first aquarium dining experience.

As the perfect accompaniment to this experience, Ocean Restaurant serves Mediterranean-Californian cuisine, executed with an Asian flair, that is also informed by Chef Cat Cora’s belief in sustainable seafood. This means that the menu uses local, sustainable seafood produce as well as seafood caught via sustainable methods, which makes the dining experience that much more satisfying.

Find it at 22 Sentosa Gateway, S.E.A. Aquarium, #B1-455, Singapore 098136.

East

5. Jumbo Seafood East Coast

This entrant probably needs no introduction. One of Singapore’s most recognisable home-grown brands that is one of the must-go places for its famous Chilli Crab, Jumbo Seafood is also known for Fried Cereal Prawns, Crispy Baby Squid, and Golden Egg Salted Prawns. The East Coast outlet, which is the first restaurant of the Jumbo group, will always be a little special because that’s where most of us had our first “seafood by the sea” dining experience. It is the quintessential Singapore dining experience that is both loved by tourists and locals alike.

Find it at Blk 1206 East Coast Parkway, #01-07/08, East Coast Seafood Centre, Singapore 449883.

6. La Cantina in Venezia

La Cantina in Venezia_Exterior

Located on the rooftop of Changi Village Hotel is La Cantina in Venezia, an Italian restaurant that serves a wide array of robust, traditional dishes that are prepared simply and executed brilliantly. The restaurant has a good selection of antipasti, thin crust pizzas, and delectable pastas – most notably the Linguine Al Granchio. Think chunks of sweet crabmeat and al dente pasta, all coated in a smooth, tangy tomato cream sauce.

Equally stunning is the panoramic view from the establishment, where you can watch airliners make their final approach into Changi Airport. If you’re planning to make dinner reservations, ask for a window table and be there in time for the sunset.

Find it at Changi Village Hotel, 1 Netheravon Road, 8/F, Singapore 508502.

West-siders fret not, for we’ve found The Bridge Bistro & Beacon Bar! It’s a nautical-themed restaurant, offering European staples with Asian influence and a pretty awesome view of the harbour. The al fresco dining area is perfect for a romantic night out with your significant other, or a relaxing get-together with friends.

Craving Italian? La Pizzeria, a new dining concept that offers wood-fired pizzas and pasta, is on the same premises. Some of their signature dishes include the Gnocchi Sorrentina (tomato sauce, basil, mozzarella, and parmesan cheese), Ravioli Spinach and Ricotta, as well as an Italian classic, the Pizza Margherita.

Pollen’s menu features modern European fare with a Mediterranean twist, made with fresh herbs and vegetables grown in the dome’s micro-climate. Vegetarians will be pleased to know that the restaurant also offers vegetarian tasting menus that are meticulously put together.

Grown weary of the same hipster cafés with dim lighting, flashy espresso machines, and avocado toast? Try some fresh air, horses, and the English countryside for a change! Well, it isn’t the actual English countryside, but the lush paddocks of Bukit Timah Saddle Club and Riders Café’s charmingly rustic ambience just might make you forget that you’re still in Singapore.

Go with the family or a group of friends because you’ll want to order everything. Just look at some of our favourites from the small, but well-executed menu: Bircher Muesli, fluffy Lemon Ricotta Pancakes with berry compote and honeycomb butter, and of course, the signature Riders Burger. When you’re done with your meal, kick back with some Grand Mimosas and laze away the afternoon, while the rugrats run wild and explore.

A Chat With Gastronomical Genius, Chef Chris Salans

This week, we’ll be delving into the brain of the genius behind Bali restaurants Mozaic and Spice — Chef Chris Salans! Chris truly embodies what it means to be an inventive and dynamic chef. Specializing in traditional Indonesian dishes with a twist, Chris utilizes Western cooking techniques to personalize his creations. From only the finest seasonal ingredients to flawless execution and presentation, Chris makes sure to serve up perfection on a plate every time. Read on for our chat with this easygoing yet insightful master chef!

9D1A3912

What is your favourite cuisine of all time?

That’s impossible to answer because I am an eater. All cuisines are amazing to me! Throughout my travels across the five continents, there has always something that blew my mind.

If you could open a restaurant anywhere in the world with no budget, where would it be and what kind of restaurant would it be?

It would be in Bali and it would be called ‘Mozaic’.  FYI, I am already living my dream!

Do you prefer sweet or savoury food?

I have a sweet tooth for sure!

What’s the one food item you cannot stand eating?

Honestly, I haven’t tried it all. From what I have dared to have a taste of, intestines were not my cup of tea.

In your opinion, what is the best fusion food?

As we all know, ‘fusion’ has pretty much been synonymous with ‘confusion’ for a long time. I don’t believe that’s always true. The best fusion I have had is at my gastrobar, Spice – for me it is the perfect fusion of comfort food and Indonesian flavors.  Believe it or not, the concept is so addictive that even though I do food tastings twice a week, I still bring my family back for more on my day off.

What’s the weirdest food you enjoy eating that nobody else likes?

I have never eaten anything that nobody else likes.  I don’t think that exists.  There is always going to be someone else who likes it, otherwise where would I be able to find it?

Who’s the best chef you’ve ever known or taken inspiration from?

The best chef I have known is quite possibly Joel Robuchon.  The chef I have taken the most inspiration from in my career would be the one and only David Bouley of NYC.

What was the very first dish you presented a customer with, and how did it turn out?

The very first dish in my career? I cant quite recall but what I do remember is that in the very beginning, I used an amalgamation of all the dishes I had ever learned to compose my first menu.  This was a sure-fire way to make sure everyone liked my first dish!  It was only after that, with time, that I developed my own recipes and style of cuisine.

What was it like working on Iron Chef alongside Chefs Sezai & Maxi?

We actually never saw each other on set! Each Iron Chef came and filmed their own episode independently.  Even so, I have made good friends out of both Sezai and Maxi. They are great guys as well as great chefs and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to collaborate with them on Iron Chef.

Fresh Eats: Spying on Chope’s September Picks

How was your August? Probably busy. Busy shopping that is! With GSS coming together with National Day, many of us were definitely hoping to catch some last-last-minute discounts. Now that our recyclable bags are full (#savetheearth), we’ve tracked down some bars and cafes to kick back and chill!

Propeller.jpg

Propeller

Want to feel on top of the world? Re-energize yourself with a gorgeous evening view of Keppel Harbour and Sentosa. Propeller is the first rooftop bar at Harbourfront, and specialises in concocting creative cocktails. It’s tough to pick a favourite from their selection of delicious tipples, but if we had to choose, The Propeller Bay – a delicious mix of vodka, orange juice, raspberry syrup, and thyme – would be it. The homemade lime espuma topping can be torched for extra zest and is the perfect touch to propel our spirits to greater heights.

Of course, great drinks must be paired with great tapas! The bar offers a mighty combination of modern inventions, like the incredibly indulgent Pan-seared Scallops with Citrus Fennel Salad or the Seared Beef Cubes with Truffle Mayonnaise. Of course, that’s not all: if you’re lucky, you can watch the Sentosa Boardwalk fireworks from Propeller’s plush sofas. (Pro tip: it’s at 8pm.)

This authentic Italian mainstay may not be located on the highest floor of its building, but trust us, the views are still Insta-worthy. Sitting on the second floor of Grand Hyatt in Wan Chai, you get the best of HK skyscrapers, sights from Kowloon, and the magnificent sweeping waters that HK takes pride in. Grissini lives up to its name as the air is filled with the irresistible smell of Italian breadsticks (‘grissini’ in Italian). Their interior is chic and as divine as their Italian fare; think succulent Roasted Wild Grouper and Homemade Potato Gnocchi with Mediterranean seafood and zucchini. Above and Beyond

As the name suggests, this TST mainstay at Hotel Icon is indeed ‘above and beyond’ in terms of location and dining experience! To start, savour on the Smoked Egg with Oolong Tea Leaves and Black Truffles, followed by their Steamed Garoupa Fillet with Egg White in Superior Chicken Broth: the chicken is soaked in a hot broth with freshly caught Garoupa and is simmered for 12 hours.

Our fan fave, though, has to be the Claypot Rice with Chinese Preserved Duck and Sausages (think poached duck pieces on top of piping-hot rice, giving the meat a firm-yet-tender texture). Above & Beyond truly spoils us when it comes to dishing out beautiful views and delectable dishes.

There’s a whole range of healthy yet scrumptious food choices to choose from, such as towering burgers served with a side of fat chips, to HUGE (I’m not kidding here) bowls of fresh salads. The menu at this all-day diner is quite comprehensive, featuring breakfast, lunch, dinner, and happy hour menus (plus a wide range of apéritifs).

Pssst, though the Corn Fritter Stack might not sound that appealing, it is to-die-for and it’s one dish we can’t stop raving about. Similar to vegetable fritters, these tasty delights are fried to perfection – crisp on the outside yet moist on the inside. The fritters are then layered with halloumi and stewed tomatoes before being topped with a perfectly poached egg. UH-may-zinggg.

The long queues outside Sisterfields are testament to its popularity. Popular amongst the locals and tourists, Sisterfields whips up gorgeous, heartily portioned, Australian-inspired dishes.

Be sure to order an Acai Berry Bowl and their Polenta Fries with Truffle Aioli and Parmesan. They’re insanely delicious we would queue 30 minutes just for them.

Deng G

The best finds often appear in the most unexpected of places, and it’s hard to imagine a more accurate way of describing the brilliant Deng G. Spanning two floors, and nestled in a run-down building in the heart of Wan Chai, the interiors of this spicy haven are in stark contrast to its exterior digs. With a menu divided into flavour profiles as opposed to ingredients, Deng G’s nosh include Hot and Spicy Oyster (jet-fresh oyster with a touch of tang that tastes as good as it smells) and Diced Chicken with Chili and Cashew: succulent pieces of chicken marinated in a piquant chilli and cashew mixture. For something spicier than the usual fare, Deng G’s the place.

Andy’s Chili Party

Chillies, chillies, and more chillies. Any meal at Andy’s Chili Party provides plenty of bang for your buck, especially on the spicy scale. We particularly loved the Steamed Pig’s Intestines with Peas and Millet, which was tangy, tender, and flavourful. The other must-try dish has to be the Duckbill Sturgeon. Insider tip: this has to be ordered in advance! Helmed by Chef Deng, who has clocked in more than ten years of culinary experience under his belt, Andy’s Chili Party has quickly become a Hong Kong institution offering genuine and delectable dishes. A dose of Sichuan reality awaits you at Andy’s, and trust us, they don’t disappoint!

Chef Umberto Bombana of three Michelin-starred 8 ½ Otto e Mezzo fame recently unveiled his newest addition to Hong Kong’s culinary scene—Octavium. Unlike Chef Bombana’s other Central hotspot 8 ½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana, Octavium features a more intimate setting, and more simplified, yet creative menu. Must-try highlights on their degustation menu have to be the Homemade Sardinian Gnocchi with Traditional Pork Ragout and Castelmagno Cheese as well as the Grand Cru Chocolate Soufflé with Hazelnut Gelato. The former boasts a rich and cheesy sauce that gives the gnocchi a silky, smooth texture whilst the latter offers a delicious molten centre and a light, springy exterior—pure chocolaty decadence from the inside out.

Find it at 8/F One Chinachem Central, 22 Des Voeux Road Central, Central, Hong Kong

Craving for crab? Well, hairy crab season might be months away, but Dynasty, the iconic Chinese mainstay nestled in the Renaissance Harbour View Hotel, is presenting a seafood symphony of crab-a-licious delights inspired by Chinese and Western vintages. Our faves on their menu? The steamed Dungeness Crab with Egg White in 25-year Huadiao Wine as well as the Deep Fried Dungeness Crab with Italian White Wine Sauce. The latter is one of the more finely-executed fresh crab dishes offering a synergy of flavours and textures. So string on an apron, roll up those sleeves, and crab on!
