FRESH EATS: July’s 7 new spots will take you to foodie heaven!

We’ve finally reached the mid-year mark! The first half of the year has seen a flurry of new openings and revamps, so we’re bringing you seven new spots to boost your dining game for the next half of the year.

1. Godmama

New Spot Godmama

If you haven’t already been, the newly revamped Funan Mall is THE HOTSPOT after Jewel at Changi. No kidding, this mall has a maze-like layout, and is filled to the brim with innovative retail stalls. That’s why it’s no doubt that Funan is home to one-of-a-kind dining spots like Godmama!

This Peranakan restaurant offers both indoor and alfresco seats, with the latter allowing you to have a great view of Funan’s rooftop garden. Godmama infuses modern elements into its traditional Peranakan plates—their All-Star Egg Skin Popiah is a hit with both the young and the old! Chock-full of comforting stewed veggie fillings, fresh prawns, and loaded with crispy garlic bits (the more crunch the better), their hearty popiah sure hits the spot after a day of exploring Funan’s facade.

We know, you’ve probably been to Joo Chiat for an #OOTD session or two along its pastel-hued shophouses, but here’s another reason to visit the hipster enclave. If you’re pacing around the East, wondering what to have for dinner, head to Jimoto Dining, a quaint Omakase restaurant nestled amongst the other stylish cafes and bars. Helmed by Chef Takahiro Sato, the restaurant serves affordable, quality Japanese fare.

As sushi lovers ourselves, we too were intrigued by how Chef Sato uses Akazu—Red Vinegar—to make the sushi rice. The Red Vinegar adds a touch of acidity, and gives an umami flavour to the sushi rice—oishi! Sake-lovers, we haven’t forgotten about you! With their extensive sake list, you’re sure to find the perfect drink for every course! All omakase courses at Jimoto Dining consist of an appetiser, sushi, and dish of the day from the hot-kitchen. If you’re looking for a quick-fix post work, take up the five-course Toki ($55+), served only from 6—7pm. On the other hand, their Introductory Sanpuru ($68+), innovative Kakushin ($98+) and the premium Zeitaku ($128+) are perfect choices if you’re looking to impress a date.

Fun fact: this restaurant has two outlets in Japan! goo Italiano is a casual Italian restaurant that prides itself on serving up affordable and authentic plates of pasta along Clarke Quay! This spot infuses elements from its Japanese outlets, offering creative options like the Tokyo Style Lasagna.

Unlike most Italian restaurants, goo Italiano shines the spotlight on Foccia Di Recco, a lighter version of Pizza. Their Foccia Di Recco comes in flavours like Parma Harm and Mushroom, great if you’re a traditionalist. But for those looking to try something different, we suggest the ‘Cacio e Pepe’, a version that infuses Baked Mash Potato and Cheese into the dough. Sweet, spicy and robust flavours are what comes to our minds when we think of Thai cuisine. French flavours on the other hand, are more subdued and sophisticated. But why choose between the two when you can have both? Farangse infuses elements of French and Issan (part of Thailand) cuisine into a one-of-a-kind gastro-medley!

Are you in need of a pick me up? Start off your meal with juicy oysters topped with refreshing Ikura. The kicker? Their oysters are served with Thai chili sauce—talk about a burst of flavor! If you aren’t a seafood-ie, give the Thai salads a go before moving on to the mains. 3. IZY Fook

Cr: IZY FOOK

We’re sure you’re a little confused by the wacky name. Meaning ‘一起福’ (together we prosper), this no-frills Japanese kitchen is inspired by old school Singaporean Cantonese restaurants. Step into IZY FOOK, and bask in the electric energy reminiscent of 70s Chinatown watering holes.

The swanky restaurant bar is split into two sections: The ‘Living Room’ and ‘Dining Hall’. Step into the ‘Living Room’ and be greeted by illustrations from Hong Kong’s up and coming illustrator Jonathan Jay Lee. Truly embodying its namesake, the ‘Living Room’ is where you can find ultra-hip diners bopping to lively hip hop tracks while noshing on roasted and charred Cantonese meats (siew yok anyone?). If you’re looking for a pre-drink snack, get the Buta No Shogayaki. It’s pan-seared ginger stick rolled with pork belly, deglazed with soy sauce and sansho slices. Super juicy and charred to perfection, there’s really no better way to kickstart your night! Need something heartier? You can’t go wrong with their Wagyu Truffle Don!

Looking to gather with friends over a cocktail or two? Head over to the ‘Dining Hall’. Located at the back of the restaurant, this cosy enclave is able to accommodate 50 people comfortably, and is perfect for a private hurrah with your favourite people!

Find it at 27 Club St, Singapore 069413

4. Noka

Fresh Eats Noka Singapore

Just like you, we’re suckers for a good view. So where better to enjoy the spectacular Singaporean skyline than at rooftop restaurant NOKA! Perched atop the newly revamped Funan Digital Life Mall, this Japanese restaurant is located right smack in the middle of Singapore’s Civic District. Opening on 28thJune, NOKA is the brainchild behind by Spa Esprit, and sister restaurant to Open Farm Community, which is why the same level of dedication to nature and the environment is upheld.

The well-loved farm-to-table concept at OFC is extended to NOKA. We recommend choosing a seat near the windows, where you can sit back and relish in the stunning view of the 5000 sq-ft urban garden that runs alongside the restaurant walls. What’s more: veggies from the edible garden are used in NOKA’s dishes. Their ECG Mushroom and Black Cod Saiko-Yaki both utilize the garden’s wide array of herbs and vegetables, making sure you get the ultimate farm-to-table experience!

Fresh Eats: A Medley of 9 May Treats!

There’s no better way to begin the month than with Chope’s Fresh Eats. Start May afresh with these 9 new highlights!

1. Wildseed Cafe & Bar (The Alkaff Mansion)

Kicking off the list of eats at Alkaff Mansion is Wildseed Cafe. Guests can expect a glorified garden encased within a beautiful interior where dried flowers and plants line the cafe, a sight so pretty you’ll unknowingly let out a gasp.

By day, the cafe serves up hearty brunch and lunch favourites like the comforting Bagel Eggs Benny, all made from locally-sourced ingredients. As the night falls, sit back and relax in a dinner setting amidst a lush, edible garden. The cafe transforms into a grill bar, where you can order bar bites to go with your beer. Try the Cheesy Bar Chor Nachos Platter, an interesting twist on the usual bar nosh, yet still equally devilishly good. The fried calamari also goes excellently well with the citrusy yuzu kuso mayo, adding a zesty hint to the crispy delight.

Live acoustic music on Fridays through Sundays coupled with a laidback ambience, and a cold, garden-inspired cocktail in hand will give you a good reason to get out on the weekends.

2. TXA Pintxo Bar

TXA? And, pintxo? What’s all these?

TXA pronounced as ‘Cha’ and pintxo pronounced as ‘pin-cho’, come together to make Singapore’s first Basque country experience, native to San Sebastian, Spain. Pintxo, the Basque region’s favourite snack, is a bite-sized morsel served on a stick, great for parties and gatherings to share amongst friends and family.

Bringing you the vibrant romance of the Spanish Basque country, TXA Pintxo Bar belts out upbeat hits to warm you up for the exciting activities lined up that’ll get you right into the groove. Select your choice of pintxo from flaky iberico crackers with smokey cod roe or salted cod with chorizo breadcrumbs, complete with a mildly pickled flavour of piparras to cut through the brine with some tang.

Pair all these Spanish eats with creative concoctions. Refresh your taste buds with the Rebujito, a delightful mix of white vino with lemon juice and Sprite, topped off with herby tinges of spearmint and rosemary. For the refined, the Pisco Sour’s a good choice. Expect brandy with egg whites and lime juice, an unexpected combination that’ll surprise your senses along with the sugary syrup and Angostura Bitters.

Find it at 10 Telok Blangah Green, Singapore 109178
Click here for more information on TXA Pintxo Bar.

3. UNA

Opening its doors once again, but this time at The Alkaff Mansion, stop by for a romanticised night of old favourites from UNA’s former Rochester venue. Revitalising the century-old heritage building with its Basque country’s Spanish vibes, UNA brings the best of the Basque region with it. Singapore’s first-ever partnership with the Basque Culinary Institute gifts diners with wholly authentic Basque region’s produce, culture, and cuisine.

Start off with the grilled octopus and let the smoky char of the mollusk engulf your senses with each bite as the paprika spikes the dish with some heat. Come in groups and get the Arroz Negro to share. Lathered in squid ink, savour the brine of the ocean in a garlicky aioli with crunchy cuttlefish, succulent prawns, and juicy clams. Wind down your meal on a sweet note with the Flan de Huevo, a combination of caramel flan with strawberries and citrus elements — a perfect bittersweet ending with an added zing.

Find it at 10 Telok Blangah Green, Singapore 109178, Level 2

4. Whitegrass

6. Sikdang

Joining the enclave of Korean eateries in Tanjong Pagar is none other than the homely Sikdang. The Korean interpretation of the restaurant name itself refers to a fun and casual diner. The simplicity of its naming translates into its recipes whereby frills and thrills are done away, leaving only the pure essence of heartwarming hospitality at pocket-friendly prices.

The chef here lives by a saying — create food like how his eomeoni (mother) would’ve made them, genuine and passionate. Authenticity at its finest, give a shot at the hotpots, reminiscent of traditional Korean flavours that’ll have you slurping up every last drop. Even the sauces here aren’t spared. The home-made sauce is the product of the chef’s earnest hard work in making sure his customers get the best taste of Korean fare, true to its roots.

If you’re in the area, why not try out something new? Let Sikdang win you over with its comforting delights.

Located just minutes away from Lavender MRT station, One 2 Drink is one of those cosy spots you’ll find nestled along a row of shophouses. Nosh here include the Salted Egg Ladies Fingers, a bar signature. Think crispy, sweetly salty batter encasing a crunchy and juicy piece of vegetable. For something more local, opt for the Ngoh Hiang, delicate pieces of pork roll that pack a flavour punch. Coupled with pints starting at only $7.80 and $35 for a bucket of 5 Stellas, you’re all settled for a gathering with close friends.

Letting the food speak for itself, mainstays like the Grilled Maine Lobster and Sliced Veal Zurich won’t disappoint. The humble restaurant offers up comforting European favourites with a touch of Swiss cordiality, giving diners the warmth of a great meal and service.

9. Wagyu Omakase by Ayumi

Helmed by the folks behind the refined Sushi Ayumi, omakase is taken to greater heights with their new concept. Wagyu Omakase centers around the best cuts of Black Wagyu from Kyushu’s vast plains.

Housing an intimate 15-seater counter setting, diners are attended to by Chef Fukashi, a meticulous culinary master from a lineage of tea-growers. His heritage inspires the omakase rendition here, whereby aspects of nature are highly prominent in the curated menu. Chef Fukashi artfully designs the menu to elevate nature to a whole new level, incorporating the seven elements of ‘fire’, ‘wind’, ‘sea’, ‘mountain’, ‘field’, ‘ice’, and ‘wood’ into each course. The fine dining omakase experience is completed with the hosting by its attentive service staff, all trained in omotenashi (traditional Japanese hospitality), to ensure that you’re well taken care of from the start to the end.

Wolfgang’s Steakhouse

Nanson Road delivers with another new hot spot—Wolfgang’s Steakhouse! ‘Classic never goes out of style’ is Wolfgang’s motto, and they certainly live up to it. This globally renowned steakhouse uses USDA prime beef that is dry-aged for approximately 28 days before being cut into steaks. Dry-ageing makes the beef ultra-tender and soft, heightening the dining experience unlike any other – that’s a plus in our books! Some notable mentions include the shareable Porterhouse as well as the Prime Filet Mignon which pairs perfectly with Creamed Spinach.

At Blue Lotus, you’ll do just that as you are surrounded by lush greenery and pretty potted plants. As you relax, have yourself any of the Mediterranean delights such as the Grilled Atlantic Octopus Leg with Herbs. It’s hard to miss Plancha’Lah with it’s open hotplate concept where guests can get up close and personal as they witness what’s cookin’ before their very eyes. Icehaus @ Alley on 25

Did you know, before electricity, food was preserved and kept cool in cabinets filled with ice? That should give you an idea on the inspiration behind the concept of Icehaus. As it’s name suggests, Icehaus specialises in serving up dishes meant to be eaten cold, such as the Scottish Smoked Salmon with chive crème fraiche. If you’re just looking for a quick, light bite, you’ve come to the right place. Grab yourself a Caesar Salad, or a croissant from the pastry selection.  And we all know what you’re thinking: what’s an ‘icehaus’ without ice cream? Head on over to the specialist dessert machines for some soft-serves, or enter gula melaka and coconut heaven with an Andaz Chendol Pop!

Smoke & Pepper @ Alley on 25

Next up, we’ve got Smoke & Pepper, the largest occupant of the concepts at Alley on 25. Here, you’ll find barbecued goodness lacing the menu but with an Asian spin. If you have trouble eating your greens because they’re too bland, the barbecued vegetarian options such as the Asian Slaw might solve that problem. Relish in the buttery Grilled Diver Scallops and the drool-worthy Black Angus Beef Burger. Just thinking about these grilled delicacies is making our mouths water!

The Green Oven @ Alley on 25

Last – but definitely not least – at Alley on 25 is The Green Oven. Every baked delight served here is popped fresh out of the star of the kitchen: a green breech oven. Bring back childhood memories with a bowl of Mac & Cheese (but of course, The Green Oven adds a touch of fancy by serving it with savoury morel mushrooms and lobster!). For something more meaty, chow down on a juicy Braised Lamb Shank with Tzatziki dip on the side. Finish off with a classic warm chocolate Brownie topped with a scoop of peanut butter ice cream.
